Instantly, a new light caught the boy’s icy gaze and a smile broke along his features. "Really?" He wasn’t so sure why he was surprised that she had said yes, but the prospect of it really excited the Russian. He wasn’t sure what would be painted across his walls, but he didn’t care too much. Whatever it was, he was sure that it would be a masterpiece. And either way, it meant that Silas was going to be able to see Mati again, on his own home turf much less. "Great! Do you have very many colors to paint vith?" He liked the idea of covering the peeling, bland wallpaper with something more vibrant. He could imagine bright colors – purple, red, orange – that weren’t as common in their natural surroundings. The possibilities were endless, of course.

"Don’t be silly," he chimed. "Of course I vill find somezhing to geeve you in return." What that was, he wasn’t sure quite yet, but the Russian was sure he’d be able to come up with something. After all, the least he could do was scrounge around through Halifax and put together a little bundle of scavenged gifts for Mati. Maybe he’d even be able to find some artist tools or paints for her. That, he figured, would be one of the best ideas.

"No, not many. Zhere vas a peecture on zhe concrete by mine house in Russia – a mural," he was glad that he could incorporate the word she had taught him, "but zhat ees pretty much eet." Though he wasn’t familiar with paintings on canvases, Silas wasn’t completely blind to them. The mansion had exposed the boy to some artwork – be it very old oil paintings or portraits – but he hadn’t really stopped to consider that. For now, it slipped his mind.
