come dance with the west wind and touch on the mountain tops

He'd called them to the Town Hall this time, eager to show it off. It stood right by their usual meeting place, the ceremonial ground, and so it would be easy to find. Eyes traced the inside of the building and his face wore half a smile where he stood at the very end, furthest from the entrance door. It was a sturdy building, and it looked it. In truth, though he had built the stable completely by himself, he was more proud of this building. The stable still needed a lot of fixing, and if his carpenter bloodline had ever put their eyes on it they probably would have laughed, and not in the good way, either. It was shelter, and it remained standing without being unsafe, and this in itself made it an accomplishment for Dawali. The horses seemed content enough, but there were always bad things happening to the roof, or a piece of wood would be missing, creating a hole in the wall where the wind would seep right through. But this building was not like that, and he reckoned it would remain intact for a much longer time than the stable. The Chief had never paid attention when his father had been trying to teach him how to do these things. Dawali had been more interested in the "magic" of herbs and herbal healing, and eventually his father had given up trying to make sure that this son, too, stayed within the Amara profession path. In no way had he looked down on Dawali's chosen profession, but the now grown male supposed his father had always hoped he would go back and return to become a carpenter like his father. Most of his brothers had done so, and now that he was a father himself, he could easily understand why his father might have wished that he picked up the carpenting path. But he had not been satisfied with building things, not until now, anyways.

As the Chief waited for the others' arrival, he turned his message this way and that in his head. He felt like a hypocrit, really. He would urge — no, order — them to remain cool about it, to be true to their wisdom and not their feelings on the matter, but what had he done, only two days ago? Truly, it made him shameful. But, what they didn't know wouldn't harm them, and it seemed to him that the meeting had been successful enough. After all, he could not simply sit down here in the south where everything was much safer and be expected to do nothing to aid his friend in need. He didn't even have to ask himself if he thought she would fight; he knew she would. Her scars told a story, and it also told of a female who was not afraid of confrontation, unlike her red AniWayan friend. Knowing this and assuming that she would fight, only made his urge to aid her stronger, and so, in secret, that was what he had done. In a way, at least. And now he would tell his members not to do what he had just done. It did not feel good, but it was necessary both for him, and for them. After all, what kind of leader would he be if he did not address this issue? If any of them had friends or family in either the pack or the clan, they had to be told to think first, or it could be the end of their social network altogether, and for a long time to come.
