That goddamned coyote had gone and scratched the hell out of his face. Kai was certain it was going to scar, and his ear now lacked a rather large section from where the beast had gotten it with his teeth. Of course, they had to run. Four of the monsters had come at them, and they were not prepared to deal with such a thing. Still, the loss stung deep—deeper then the scar on his haunch, deeper then the cuts on his face that were going to scar in time. Kai felt the loss because it was a sign of weakness, and he hated himself for showing it. It was unacceptable. Haku would not tolerate weakness in his pack, and Kai did not intend to make himself weak. Sure, he had defended and obeyed his child’s mother from that green eyed woman, but that was a loss—the bitch had lived. So had all of the coyotes.

Sulking on the couch, where he had been for the majority of the past few days, Kai’s blue eyes no longer held the boyish light they had when he had arrived. Instead, they were terribly dark and wicked. He had retreated into the darkest place of his mind, and for the two year old, it was dark indeed. Eating was mechanical, as were all of these things he did in order to keep himself healthy. Now, he was keeping his mind distracted by gnawing rather unattractively on a deer antler, taken from the most recent kill he and Sicarus had made (which even then, had been a joyless task), only occasionally imagining himself crunching a coyote skull instead.
