Big Grin

He was so, so, so, soooo hungry. Gideon grumbled to himself as he padded through the forests of Dahlia, stomach grumbling along with him. He'd been eating grasshoppers and other insects all morning in an attempt to fill himself up, but it wasn't working. By the time he actually began to feel full, he'd start to feel hungry all over again. The adolescent peered upward, looking at the sky through the tree branches overhead. The gray skies above promised rain, but it looked as if it wouldn't come for at least a few more hours. He was glad for this; he didn't care much for getting wet. He wouldn't have even come out of the house had he not been so incredibly hungry.

The pup was getting old enough to hunt on his own, but he didn't know how he felt about that. He'd caught a mouse before, one time...but he'd ended up letting it go. He couldn't kill it; it was just too cute! It'd looked at him with those cute, beady little mousey eyes...and he hadn't been able to resist releasing it. It probably had a little mouse mate and little mouse pups to feed anyway. Aunt Bris brought him his food usually...and at that point it was usually unrecognizable or already long dead. He didn't feel bad for eating that stuff.

Gideon sighed as he stopped for a break. He was near the river, he could hear, and he got back up to walk slowly toward it. Perhaps he'd try his hand at fishing again today. Maybe one of the fish would be stupid enough to allow him to flip it up out of the water. He entered the stream and stood still, concentrating carefully on the shapes that floated just beneath the surface.

While the warm, vivid breaths of summer were starting to cool and change into another season’s, the weather remained warm and harmonious—most of the time. The early signs of rain seemed to appear frequently these last weeks. The sky overhead was gray and heavy, but the quiet threat of rain could not keep him inside. In fact, the young Alpha of Dahlia was fond of rain in most forms, and silently welcomed the drops to fall over his lands and shower them all. It had been a beautiful summer and now he found himself waiting in awe for autumn colours to wash over the Dahlian lands with maturing hues so different from the rainbow from the warmer season.

On four legs he moved, tracing the river without a true purpose set out. He toyed with the thought of fishing for a nice meal for Bris and the children, but this was not a particularly strong skill of his. He was a swift, effective hunter on lands, but the aquatic prey seemed tougher to catch. Patience, he had, but he had never spent much time developing his ability to fish. He had several times toyed with the idea of learning how to use a net, but had not gotten around to it. His days were so busy with other things. The taste of fish was exquisite—a nice change from the red, bloody meat of mammals.

His focus fell on a dark form standing still in the stream. Gideon was growing up. It did not feel like too long ago he had arrived by the borders. Some of the Stormbringer puppies had already disappeared, to both Conor’s and Bris’ regret, but the young boy had remained. The child had gotten far, and the male could feel a proud smile draw across his lips as he watched the young boy. A childish impulse washed through the golden male then, and he crouched low in the tall grasses, crawling closer to the focused young male. When most of the distance was executed, he was about to jump into the shallow waters with a splash, but came to his senses before doing the silly deed. If Gideon was trying to fish, it wouldn’t be fair to shatter the fish and surprise him like he had intended to.

Instead, the autumn hued form rose from his hiding place and cocked his head, perhaps surprising the dark youth anyway with his sudden nearness. ”Do you want company, Giddy?” he wondered, calling the adolescent by the silly-cute nickname he seemed to have adopted.

Gideon had only ever experienced the warmer weather, and wasn't sure what to make of these slightly cooler days. It would make going into the water harder...as he stepped into it he could already feel the water cooling him down slightly. He didn't know that water froze when it got too cold outside, and had never seen snow. It would definitely be a winter to remember for him! His first winter.

He stared down into the water, trying to concentrate, and used one paw to flip a medium-sized fish up onto the shore. Aha! Victory! The proud pup turned just in time to hear Conor talk, and he started a bit at the sight of the male. He'd been very intensely concentrating on the water; he must not have heard him or smelled him come up! His nose wasn't too good anyway, so that was probably part of the problem.

The younger male dipped his muzzle toward the ground, tail drooping in response to the other's authority. After his display, however, things turned back to normal. "Sure! I caught a fish already..are you hungry? I don't think one little fish is gonna be enough for both of us, though. Maybe...like....six fishes. What do you think? I should probably bring some back for Nayru, too, to show her what I accomplished today!" He laughed.

When the young boy moved to look at the cinnamon and caramel coated intruder, lavender eyes caught sight of the silvery, shiny form wriggling blindly in ache for its natural habitat. Ears perked in silent surprise and the white tipped tail’s movement picked up as he watched the boy with a grand smile. It was a gift to be able to watch this boy develop from a frightened, runty child and into a strong, resourceful adult. He would not take on arrogance and think that the boy reminded him of himself and his own transformation from child to grownup, and instead only appreciated this cheerful sight. Aquatic meat was something the leader greatly appreciated, and he liked the thought of having a skilled fisher in the pack. Giddy was free to do whatever he wished, but the leader thought he saw potential here. It was never a bad idea to polish one’s basic survival skills.

As the youth’s voice rang over the dancing water, the adult moved from lush grass to the crystal stream of water. The liquid pushed coolly against his lower legs, but it was comfortable and soothing. ”You’re right, we need at least six fishes. Perhaps more if you want to bring some back to Nayru,” lips remained curved and eyes twinkled with soft humour that Giddy easily could miss if he did not pay attention. ”I’m sure she would love some.” Was it foolish to be entertained by the thought of something more than a friendship between the spotted girl and the black boy? They seemed to get along so well, and who knew what would happen once they reached the age where hormones intensified everything. ”I’m quite hungry, actually. Want to see who can catch the biggest fish?” A clever grin replaced the not-so-innocent smile that had graced his lips for only a short moment.
