IN CHARACTER
graceful

Addison was sleeping. Grace had checked, double checked, and even triple checked to be sure. They had curled up together what Grace could understand was called the "Ranch", buried under a number of pillows and blankets. But all the while that her sister was drifting off to sleep, Grace was feeling altogether unsatisfied with her knowledge of where they were. Lifting her copper face to check for the fourth time, Grace saw a tranquil face of slumber and decided it was time for action. Wiggling out from underneath Addison's arms, she propelled herself backward until she was free from the tangles of the bed.

The wooden floorboards felt cool against the D'Angelo puppy's paws as she placed one after the other against the ground. Vivid blue eyes skid past the desk and other furniture that resided within the room to the solid door that barricaded her from the outside world. How wonderful of a world that place would be if only she could go explore it. She would be back in bed by the time Addison woke up, that was to be sure, because Addison fed her and cared for her - but until then the world was Grace's oyster, and how could she deny that?

Gingerly padding across the floor, the puppy worked the nerve to push at the door. Seeing that it had no give, she cocked her copper head to the side and contemplated the situation. If only Addison was awake, she could magically open the door for her and the world would be hers. Unfortunately, if that were to happen, Addison would not let her go outside. A soft pout formed upon her lips as she ruminated over this fact. But, as no one else was there to really satisfy emotional comforts, Grace quickly got over it and pondered how to get the door open.

She attempted to push at it again with no yield. Then she lifted her two front paws and set them firmly against the door to see if that would budge the stern object. Still nothing. Conquered once again by the insensitive object, Grace seized up her competition. Large and woody, it stood rigidly in place, adorned simply by a brass handle. Bingo! Light-bulbs went off in the puppy's head as she took in the shape of the handle.

Lifting her body up onto her two legs, Grace reached up to paw at the handle. Almost, almost - there! With a soft creak that made Grace check for the fifth time that her sister was still sound asleep, the door opened up to a softly lit hallway. Tucking her head up against the side of the wall, she peered out into the lengthy hall, not caring to look behind her. Warm and cozy, but barren, the hallway opened up to Grace, welcoming the girl to treasures and adventures unbound. And once she realized that she was in the home stretch, she picked her body up and began to trot down to see what other wonders she could find on her own.
