8. Dawn braced Calixte's blood and caused his morning fur to weep tiny ice tears. His breath curled towards the sky like incense burning gently. Unfazed, his strict-footed trot kept the body's embers ablaze. He watched as sunlight slowly curled her fingers through Earth's wild hair and french-kissed his entire body with the passion of obsessed lovers. Life flowed from the sun's all-embracing tongue and filled her lover's muscular body with rousing heat.
The end of winter's unforgiving indifference had the land moaning in orgiastic reverie every morning. Without breaking foot-beat Calixte smiled at the blinding horizon, Thank you for this. All of it. He was particularly fond of this new day because of the inner-hardships of last-night. A residual shiver reminded him of the cold that had easily penetrated his very being.
As he moved across the Earth (or did the Earth move across him?) he sensed numerous scents intensifying beneath the hot sun. He paused. Concentrated messages from the past met his nose at ground-level. He shuffled slowly to allow his spasmodic nostrils the chance to read the contents. Deer had visited this spot recently, rabbit and raccoon too. He was surprised by the concentrated canine smell, and quietly wondered if he had found a bountiful oasis of victuals and kin. Deep in him the word 'home' hummed a longing tune, but he could not quite bring the thought to consciousness. Afraid, Calixte was afraid.
