Optime form. Sorry it's so bad, I'm terribly sick. x.x

Sheep were not notorious for their cleverness. In fact, they were not notorious for anything but stupidity or, in some cases, their smell. Despite this fact, Kvæsir had always liked sheep, had always treated them with a certain amount of respect. They buckled under his intense gaze, of course, as any livestock would do to a persistent border collie, and as he leaned on the pasture's wooden fence, arms crossed over the wooden bar and tail gently wagging, he was mentally restraining himself from leaping over the enclosure to get a better feel for the animals. It would help him later on, he supposed, when and if he made it to a herding rank, and the woolly creatures needed to learn his smell. He could never herd in Optime form; he was still having difficulties, to some degree, moving at swift speeds. There was a pattern with how the animals acted, he was noticing, and he was also deciphering which of them were the more dominant animals in the group. You had to go for those first, of course, as sheep, being naturally submissive, would follow whichever member of their herd seemed to have even an inkling of where to go.

Kæ was surprised to see that there was no land with which to rotate the stock on, and wondered if the leaders were aware of the inclement repercussions- every year the grass would grow thinner, less nourishing, and the livestock would suffer. He was not a completely sensitive man, but he was not compassionless either, and made a mental note to bring this fact up to Jefferson the next time the two crossed paths. The Patriarch's home stood over Kvæsir's shoulder; he had heard that within lay a wondrously well-stocked library and was hoping to be able to venture inside sometime soon. It was irritating to him that he never saw much of Jefferson- at all since their initial meeting, actually- and it would be rude, if not disastrous, to simply waltz into the dominant male's residence without so much as a please-and-thank-you.

It was a cool afternoon, the wind tousling the feathered fur that lined the backs of his legs and his shoulders and roughing up his faux-hawk and bangs. With a swift movement he swept the thin white fur away from the top of his vision. Despite the amiable weather, once again he had yet to run into anyone that he knew- though the selection was minimal.

OOC: Mine is short D: ugh I'm so tired.

The round woman yawned and shook her fur out, disrupting the animal that had taken up residence there. The zebra finch took off into the air, beak opening in an alarm-chirp at the sudden waking. She cringed and glanced upwards at him, frowning. "I'm sorry!" She called. The small creature came back down down after a few moments, settling on her head. She had wanted to get the straw out of her fur, but had forgotten about the animal that had been sleeping in there. Naniko didn't often have little birds sleeping in her coat, but this one was special, a patient of her who had been helping her out ever since before she had abandoned her pack and left for the city. She had mended his broken wing, but now that he could fly again he wasn't interested in leaving.

The unshifted wolf considered laying back down in the straw that she had been relaxing in before, but decided against it. She could go out and check the sheep, then head back home and make sure for the thousandth time that she had everything in place for her pups' arrival. She left the barn and headed for the pastures, paws taking her slowly toward her destination. She wasn't taking any chances; this would probably be one of her last days of watching the sheep before the pups came, and she didn't want anything to happen.

s'okay, mine's short too :/ haven't seen you on AIM, everything alright?

So transfixed on the sheep Kæ was that he nearly missed the rustle of paws against grass, even with the wonderfully acute ears that canines are naturally blessed with. Still, he did catch the scent, and as he sensed Naniko a ways behind him he turned, one side of his lips curling into a boyish half-smile. Head cocked, flopped ears pricked, his brown eyes were almost playful as they met the silver woman's face. It was strange being taller than her, strange being taller than anyone, actually, and for a selfish moment he gleefully relished the feeling before it passed. Still, it brought a wide grin to his white muzzle and set his tail wagging. "You know, for a while there, I had to wonder if you'd actually come back,"he chuckled with a wink. Though it hadn't been long since he had last seen the girl, he could swear that her belly had grown even larger- if that was possible.

"They're due any day now, aren't they?" he asked, only slightly masking his enthusiasm. Though he didn't think he would make a good father, Kvæsir did, like most others, find children to be delightfully adorable from afar. "And if they are," he began again, eyes narrowing, "Shouldn't you be somewhere safe? And warm?" The fact that it was a pleasant day was not the point. "And where's your mate? Shouldn't he be escorting you?" Of course, his seeming interrogation of the pregnant wolf was by no means meant to be rude, but- tact wasn't always his strong point when he was genuinely worried.

His gaze shifted once more, this time back to woolly bundles that grazed lazily before him, their long faces doleful. "Do they eat the sheep, here? Or just use the wool?" So very full of questions, he was today.

She was glad to see that he was all in one piece and that he was living inside Phoenix Valley; she hadn't been sure about what would happen between the joiner and Jefferson after she left. Maybe the leader's sarcasm was only given to women, but not to men? She wasn't sure. Either way, Naniko hadn't been too happy that day. He approached and she greeted him with a nod, then swept her head the other direction to take a look at the sheep. Was he intersted in the sheep too? She could probably use a bit of help with them while she was pregnant--maybe she if she saw the silver leader again soon she would mention it to her.

"Yup! They can come at any time." She said, tail wagging back and forth, a secondary response. He seemed concerned about her but she did not take offense; the easygoing female simply shrugged, grinning. "I want to get out while I still can, you know? I'm not leaving the Valley, that's for sure. But I'll start to feel the contractions first, a while before they come. It'll give me time to get back to the cabin. And I have no mate...but their father will be coming up for the birth, to meet them, I think. He'll stay with me." Speaking of which! She was curious about where Kvaesir was staying, if she could go and find him again after their meeting this day. "Things went well with Jefferson, I take it? Did he show you someplace you could stay?"

Her jade eyes went back to the sheep for a moment and she considered his question. She'd been wondering the same thing since she came here...it was probably better to just admit that instead of telling him something that she wasn't absolutely sure of. "I don't honestly know. I never asked. I bet they're for winter-time, when game is scarce."

HAHA. So i just realized that i coded half of my last post wrong and there were about three more dialogue sentences that didn't show Tongue also, sorry for the long wait...i've been in a slump :/

He tossed her a lopsided grin. "As long as you're staying careful. Don't the contractions hurt? I mean, wouldn't it be painful for you to have to travel while having those?" The happenings of childbirth were obviously vague and mysterious things to the young man, but the thoughts were quickly lost as his brow stitched in thought. He hadn't really thought her the type to not have a mate; she was certainly attractive enough to garner that sort of male attention. At the same time, it essentially made it alright for him to treat her like any other single woman, instead of tip-toeing through the tulips to make sure that he wouldn't offend her or her mate. He questioned her hesitantly, cocking his head. "Is he from a nearby pack?"

Kæ gave a half-grimace. "Things went...okay with Jefferson- I mean, I'm here, aren't I? But no, I haven't found a place to stay. I'm not exactly sure how it works around here, and I don't want to go barging into a place that's taken or off-limits, you know? Though I do suppose that it'd be kind of important in winter time. I don't really enjoy the thought of freezing to death."

He nodded, quiet for a moment as his gaze shifted back to the sheep. It was so calming, watching them, and he had never eaten sheep- just herded them, though surprisingly near his boyhood home there had been a small herd of feral ones. He smiled and turned once more, chocolate eyes sliding over Naniko's swollen belly before returning to her face. "Speaking of scarce," he began slowly, "I haven't seen much of anyone, not even Jefferson." He wasn't so much referring to that specific male so much as leaders in general. Or anyone, really. "Although I did meet two very nice women in the graveyard a few days ago," Kvæsir added. "One named Xeris, and another named Anya. Perhaps you know them?"

ooc: Sorry for the lateness. Been in kind of a funk lately.

She wondered how much he knew about the birth of puppies. They wouldn't all come out at once, of course...and she would have a little while to travel before they came. "I suppose so, but no more painful than if I were laying there...I hope. I think I would be able to get back home from here. Or I could call for Geneva to help me--she's around quite a bit." Geneva was a good leader and good friend, and she trusted that the woman would come if she needed any help.

"A living space..." When she had come here, Geneva had helped her figure out where she could stay. She had bene here for a little while but wasn't sure exactly where all the cabins and dens were that were unoccupied. "I'd just wander around and sniff a bit, knock on some doors and ask if some certain place is unoccupied" If he were social, anyway. Maybe he wanted to figure things out for himself. "I don't know too many people here--just you and Geneva, for now. I haven't met them. Were they nice?" She asked. She did want to get a feel of the wolves here before she gave birth.
