Create a Territory & Sub-Territory VI
Let's fill up the rest of the Nova Scotian peninsula!

___Once again our map has been expanded to include most of the rest of Nova Scotia! The port cities of Yarmouth and Barrington are now playable, but they aren't very interesting without any sub-territories! There's also the matter of that "unknown" section which could use a name and a description, don't you think? We also think Halcyon Mountain could use a bit of spicing up with sub-territories -- it's such a huge chunk of land but hardly anyone ever roleplays there. :O We're hoping you guys can help us out!

Things we're looking for!

  1. A name and description for the "unknown" territory on the map.
  2. Up to five (5) sub-territories for the "unknown" territory.
  3. Up to five (5) sub-territories for Yarmouth and Barrington.
  4. Up to three (3) sub-territories for Halcyon Mountain.
  5. Sub-territory submissions for other territories are welcomed, but they're not as high-priority!
___ Please remember that 'Souls is located in Nova Scotia. If you need some ideas to get you started, take a look at the area section of the website, or Wikipedia's geography of Canada article.

Territory Name: Howling Caverns
Image:
Your Name: Rachael
Territory size in square miles: 9 (2-3 miles deep as well)
If a sub-territory, approximate location on the map: Center of the Haylcon Mountain, between two large peaks
Territory Description: Deep in the heart of Haylcon Mountain, resting between two of the larger peaks, lies a set of interconnected caverns that have stood the test of time. They have multiple entrances from all corners of the area they cover, some barely large enough for a rabbit, but the most prominant ones are two gaping holes on the rock face nearly 15 feet high. Humans discovered these entrances long ago but the only marks of their discovery are fences lining the overgrown path up to the caves, and the less stable sections cordonned off inside. They were so deep within the mountain, they just let it run wild even before they disppeared. Just within the mouth of the cave all light disppears and the darkness is absuloute. If there is a source of light, the rugged walls are visible with crumbling rocks falling all around. The stone is a pale golden-yellow, rough with the passing of time. The caves continue on for miles, out as well as down, and it is easy to get lost in their labyrinth. The name Howling Caverns comes from the sounds of the wind whistling through each of the caves, amongst the tiny cracks and gaping holes. Few have explored these natural anomalies, and with their inexcessibility it is possible no one ever will.

Territory Name: The Ashlands
My Name: Austin
Territory Size: The "Unknown" Area (roughly 10x50miles)
Not a Sub Territory
Territory Description: The western-most coast of the Bay of Fundy peninsula should be a flourishing coastal territory filled with life. Such is not the case. The vast majority of its forests are burned out piles of charcoal, the ash which should be nurishing future plantlife poisoning the very soil. It doesn't take much investigation to find the source of the problem: crashed and ripped asunder along the coast are no fewer than three oil-tankers, all with arabic script painted in fading red along their hulls. One of them also has a large hazerdous-materials warning. Clearly, years and years ago, something went very wrong here.
Today, things are finally starting to change. The toxcity of the soil has finally receded to levels where the first hardy plants are beginning to emerge, and the air no longer poises danger to those who stray too far in. For the first time in living memory, the tankers could even be inspected: they could have books, supplies, perhaps even firearms. It's also possible that more of their hazardous cargo remains, sealed inside...

Sub-Territory Name: Oasis
My Name: Austin
Sub-Territory Size in Square Miles: 10(ish) miles
Approximate Location of Subterritory on Map: in the Unknown territory, as a sub-territory of the "Ashlands" concept (see above), roughly half a square north from the word 'unknown' on the current map
Territory Description: Persistant inward winds from the Northwest into a perfectly shaped hill-and-basin area in the Ashlands kept it from dying with the rest of the area, and quickly cleaned out the filth that had managed to seep in. As such, this zone is a beautiful example of life amidst the tragedy around it: it has several clean-water ponds, flourishing fauna, and is naturally sheltered from harsh weather. As a result, the animal population is more dense here than perhaps anywhere else in the bay of fundy. Prey animals in particular have been breeding in large numbers as an adaptation to the high predator population. This area offers an interesting duality in its safety from nature and the Ashlands, but a higher-than-usual likelyhood of attack from bears, mountain lions, and other native predators.

HI MY NAME IS SIE. THAT IS APPLICABLE FOR ALL SUBMISSIONS. XD

Also I am really, really bad at approximating square mileage so... adjust accordingly?!?!

[html]Yarmouth/Barrington Subterritories

Cape Sable Island, Location (Maybeee 2-3 square miles?)

Cape Sable Island is a tiny island all the way to the south, in the same territory that encompasses Barrington and Yarmouth. It is a rather large island, and it is very prone to bad weather--there is a low-lying fog generally hanging around the island, and the waters surrounding it are known to be dangerous. Thankfully, prior to their extinction the humans erected a rather sturdy causeway which provides foot transportation to the island--of course, during periods of high sea elevation, the causeway is impassable. The island itself is the birthplace of the Cape Islander fishing boat, a small boat found all over the Atlantic, and thus there are many factories which have finished and half-finished boats left to stand inside. There was also a large lobster fishing industry on the island, and many of the buildings are relevant to it--canneries, factories, and entire docks dedicated just to this industry. The exterior of the island is surrounded by a single, lonely road which provides transportation between the many coastal communities of the island, whereas the interior of the island is generally untamed wilderness.

Highway 103, Location (I have no idea)

Highway 103 connects Halifax to Barrington and eventually Yarmouth. Its four lanes are sparsely populated with numerous decaying cars--they create a rather eerie atmosphere for travelers along the road, skeletons still draped across the innards of the cars. The asphalt itself has begun to crack, with weeds and hardy grasses springing up from the earth. Overgrowth hangs thickly over both sides of the highway, allowing only a thin sliver of sunlight to penetrate through the gloom. During the humans time, Highway 103 was the second deadliest road in Canada--it has grown considerably less dangerous in the time of the Luperci, of course, but it's not really a place one wants to wander around alone at night.

Tusket Islands, Location (Uh. Probably less than five square miles? :[)

The Tusket Islands are a number of islands south of Yarmouth. There are a very large number of islands, ranging in size from tiny to massive. The largest of these islands is, of course, Tusket Island, with an elevation of a hundred feet above sea level. The other islands are generally rather small; during the time of humans they were very sparsely populated, and there are virtually no human remnants on the smaller islands, with few exceptions. The most notable of these is on "I'sle du Massacre" or "Murder Island"-- so named for the legend of a pair of warring Native American tribes who wiped one another out, their bodies found decades later by humans. A small memorial museum relays this tale to present-day Luperci explorers, displaying bones and other human artifacts.

New Glasgow, Location (3 square miles?)

New Glasgow is a relatively small island town. Although it is rather small, there are four distinct neighborhoods: the North End, East End, West Side, and Downtown. Both the East and North Ends are mostly sprawling residential communities, with the North End obviously the more affluent of the two neighborhoods, with larger houses and properties. The East End was downtrodden even before the humans were extinguished--the area shows distinctive signs of decay, and the apartment building complexes are the safest places to go, as many of the duplex houses are in shambles. The downtown area is primarily businesses--there are storefronts as well as larger corporate buildings, but as New Glasgow is not a city, none of these buildings are over four stories tall. A small hospital and several schools are also located downtown. The West Side is extremely commercial; there are a number of large warehouses and factories for exploration. Main Street bridge, which enters on West Side and then cuts straight through downtown and into the East End and up to the North End, is the only way into or out of the town.

Unknown Territory Subterritories

Shalebridge Marsh, Location (~7 square miles)

The westernmost coast of 'Souls is composed primarily of of lowlands. Not only is the area barely above sea level, it is also dotted with numerous rivers, lakes, and waterways, and it is often prone to flooding. The soil here is especially fertile, and the area is wildly green in the springtime, even the water itself growing over with a thick layer of algae. During the wintertime, however, Shalebridge Marsh is especially dead and barren--there are no coniferous trees in this area, and so winter is an especially gray and dreary time in this part of the land. Both the cold and misery of winter and the warmth and beauty of spring are accentuated by this place. The area is populated by a number of birds--there are a number of water-loving species, including some herons, ibis, and many different kinds of ducks.

01 (I LOVE YOU FALLOUT 3)

Note: I would think this area would expand the green on the unknown subterritory a little bit, I hope that's alright? D:

Cheval Island, Location (<2 square miles)

This tiny island was not populated in the time of people aside from a single research station which stands in shambles on the southernmost tip of the island. What has survived from their time, however, are the horses that have roamed the island since the 18th century. They are a small and hardy feral species, generally brown and white in color, with virtually no gray horses among them. They are small and referred to as ponies, but they are in fact horses. There are no more than a hundred horses roaming the island, and as they have not been domesticated in any way for nearly two hundred and fifty years, Luperci are ill-advised to attempt taming them unless they are extremely experienced with equines. Cheval Island itself possesses just one freshwater lake, with only enough vegetation to support the small horse population. There are few small mammals or other prey animals aside from the horses—sea birds frequent the coastland, but beyond that there is little else to be found on Cheval Island.

Halcyon Subterritories

Stellarton Mines, Location (2 square miles surface area?)

The Stellarton Mines were first opened up in the early nineteen hundreds. The humans gouged deep into the mountain, creating long and deep tunnels that were in use until the virus struck. Although most of the mine shafts are horizontal, there are a few instances of sharp vertical drops that required the use of elevators--elevators which have long since ceased being used. Of course, there is no natural light in the deeper parts of the mine; in order to safely explore the Stellarton Mines, a torch is required. Even with light, canines are advised to tread very carefully, as a fall into a vertical mineshaft is certain doom--if the fall itself isn't fatal, there isn't a way back up and out of the mines.

Pictou Falls, Location (9 square miles)

The Pictou River runs over Halcyon Mountain, cold and fresh water springing forth from deep within it. During the course of its downstream travel, the river meets a rather sharp cliff face and falls well over fifty feet into a deep pool below, continuing downstream a short way before doing the very same thing. This pattern is repeated four times down the stretch of the mountain, with rolling and rocky cliffs on either side of the waterfall the whole way down. The lowest waterfall is the only one that is safe to jump, as the drop is a mere ten feet and the pool at the bottom is the largest, but the rest are no less picturesque for their danger.

01 (just the name Big Grin)

Traître Ampitheatre, Location (1.3 square miles)

The Traître Ampitheatre began as a simple indentation in the mountain, used by the local natives to hold various types of meetings. Industrialization and the success of the mining industry on Halcyon Mountain lead to deeper cuts into the rock, eventually carving out a very large ampitheatre. The vast, empty parking lot stretches around the ampitheatre itself, ridiculously curved and with various levels and heights thanks to being built into a mountain. The rock formations closest to the bottom of the ampitheatre are are brilliant orange-red, as the construction on the theatre eventually gouged into a layer of clay-rich rock, and the rings of different types of stone make up the sides of the theatre, growing progressively darker and less crimson close to the top. The stage area is quite large, and a runway extends out from it into the seating, which were of course, designed with each layer slightly higher than the next.

Trying my hand at this...I may add others later.

Territory Name: Barrington Woolen Mill
Your Name: Silver
Territory size in square miles: 1-2
If a sub-territory, approximate location on the map: Near southern end of Barrington
Territory Description: Established in 1882, this mill was used for the spinning of wool in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. It had been preserved as a museum by humans until their demise, and thus has remained in relatively good shape. It lies on the Barrington River, which flows into the nearby ocean and provided water for the mill. Several spinning wheels, looms, and dye pots remain inside, as well as tapestries and artwork placed there by humans. The mill provides an interesting place to explore, and there are probably some interesting things to be be found there, as well as sources of firewood and other supplies. The river also provides a site for fishing and swimming, and there are a few small islands nearby where the sheep were raised for wool collection.

And just for fun, here's the official site of the museum.

BAHAHA LAST MINUTE MUCH

Territory Name: Fellmoor Swamp (SORRY SIE THE NAME YOU SUGGESTED BEFORE ESCAPES MY MIND DDDDDDSmile

Your name: TITMOUSE Big Grin

Territory Size: Roughly the size of the "unknown" territory.

Approximate location of territory: The "Unknown" territory lulz.

Territory Description: The swamp areas of Fellmoor Swamp are treacherous, if not disgustingly muddy. Tangled with trees that droop with long branches and home to the mysterious swamp moose (:O), the swamp is pretty much as it's name describes. Festering swamp land that stretches for nearly 10 square miles, combined with mire muck that can suck an unsuspecting puppy easily, make this land a force not to be reckoned with. However, there is a more benevolent side, which is home to the intriguing Nova Scotian swamp moose. Making its home in the swamps from many kinds of harm, the swamp moose is a pacifist creature. However, since their antlers are usually twisted with the native foliage, they often look very messy and dangerous.

Okay!

First of all, many apologies for the endless delays in bringing these results to you. Since we had so few entries, we decided to forgo the voting round and tried to incorporate most of the territories submitted in some way or form. Below are all of what was used:

Howling Caverns -- subterritory of Halcyon Mountain (Rachael)
Stellarton Mines -- subterritory of Halcyon Mountain (Sie)
Pictou Falls -- subterritory of Halcyon Mountain (Sie)

Oasis -- subterritory of The Ashlands/Unknown (Austin)
Cheval Island -- subterritory of Unknown (Sie)

Cape Sable Island -- subterritory of Yarmouth&Barrington (Sie)
Highway 103 -- subterritory of Yarmouth&Barrington (Sie)
New Glasgow -- subterritory of Yarmouth&Barrington (Sie)

The Ashlands (Austin)
Fellmoor Swamp (Titmouse)

Congrats!

Most of the remaining submissions were cut only because the area covered was too small or because some of the descriptions were getting redundant. For example, Shalebridge Marsh, which was to be a subterritory of the "Unknown" territory was pretty much incorporated into the final description for Fellmoor Swamp. Many of the submissions were reworded or shortened as well since you guys wrote a freakin' tonnnnnnnnnn.

ANYWAY, NOW WE HAVE NEW (SUB)TERRITORIES. PLEASE GO PLAY IN THEM.
