A Guiding Light

A finger traced her brow, drawing the wave of fur away to join the rest that cascaded around her neck and past her shoulders. It was light out, the bright raze of the sun filtered from the beyond, past the trees that lined the horizon, through the newborn grasses, and finally through the transparent panes of glass of her windows. It hit her face, bringing spots to her open eyes and telling her that morning had finally come. There were shadows below her eyes, aches in her body as she lifted herself from the bed to sit and look out the window she had been staring through for hours. Folding her hands in her lap the Church wolfess was reminded of the cloths that had been messily tied there. Her mother was no healer, and even more squeamish at the sight of blood. But they had done their job, the bleeding stopping quickly.

Her raw wounds did not hold her thoughts, and her frown deepened as she stood. Anu had wished that she did not sleep alone, and Mati hadn’t wanted it either. But she refused her mother’s request and didn’t sleep in her room or allow the elder female to sit beside in the sunroom as she fought for sleep’s relief. She pictured the scene, following the rescuers back to the Manor, watching as they took her away. She was all right, and she would be fine and heal in time. Still Mati found that she had lingered in front of the door that closed off the room she stayed in. She had sat beside it in the dead of night, only to retreat back to her own bed where she lay awake until dawn.

Walking to the door, Mati cringed as she grasped the handle and turned it. It was quiet in the large house, many likely still deep in slumber, and she walked slowly and without a sound in the hopes of letting them sleep a bit longer. Her paws knew the route perfectly now, and it took only a few moments for her to reach the room. Cambria’s scent wafted from the crack under the door, and Mati felt her heart flutter and then sink instantly. Her ears turned to search for any signs of life from beyond the wood panels, and she closed her eyes. They opened with a snap; the memories that came to her were the same ones that kept her up all night long. She couldn’t hear anything, and her courage grew and she reached for the doorknob slowly. The door cracked, and Mati opened it slowly and carefully to keep it from squeaking.

Her body ached and screamed at her, filling her head so much that a headache developed. It hurt to breathe too deep, her ribs badly bruised, perhaps even cracked. It could have been much worse, she knew. If the beam hadn't hit something else before her it would have crushed her. Her ribs wouldn't just be bruised they'd be broken. They probably would have ripped and punctured her other organs and her life would have leaked out of her quickly but agonizingly. Cambria knew this, but that didn't stop the fear that had consumed her as she had been trapped under the beam with the rest of the barn falling all around her. It didn't stop the pain that she did feel. Just as the last time her life had been threatened, she felt as if she had aged years in the span of minutes. The girl was tired and she was drained.

Her mother had wanted her to stay downstairs with her, but Cambi had refused, not wanting to bring the negative vibes into the room her small new siblings lived in. They didn't need those upset emotions surrounding them. Still, Savina had insisted on staying in her room with her to look after her. Her father stayed down with Silvano, Parker, and Artemis. After she had been taken to her room she had instructed her mother on how to care for the scrapes on her body, how to pick out the splinters, how to clean, and how to wrap. Cambria knew she was in better shape than her poor aunt though. She wanted to be with Ghita, healing her as was her duty, but she could not. They both needed care. She hated that barn, for hurting her family when they had only been coming in to save her. She hated that her aunt had been so badly injured on her account.

Sleep had been fitful and short at best. She would drift in and out of consciousness, her rest broken whenever her body moved or shifted at all, pain shooting and spreading out all over. Before the sun was even risen she had given up on her fruitless attempts. Cambria knew that her mother had slept even less, but she had asked if her daughter was hungry and Cambi couldn't lie that she wasn't. So her dark mother had given her a kiss before leaving to go catch her something, promising to be back as soon as she could. When she left Cambria had closed her eyes, more for appearance's sake than anything else, though she did manage another few short naps before she heard the soft creaking of the door.

Sea green eyes opened halfway, expecting her mother, but it was not her mother she saw. Her heart shot to life, jumping in her chest. A weak smile came to her delicate features and her hand lifted slowly, reaching out for the figure in her doorway. "Mati..."

In a way Mait didn’t want to open the door. She didn’t want to know what was behind it. She feared the worse, always wondering how bad it was. She could wish and dream for the best all she wanted, but Mati Church could not loose that hint of insecurity. Cambira had been in the barn for so long, the minutes felt like hours, no longer... more like days. Mati had thought that the sun had set and risen again as she sat outside the dilapidated structure, her mother’s arms around her. The violet-eyed girl had drifted away from the older female, keeping a relationship that was almost something sterile. Polite, and never going too in-depth with their conversations. But Mati finally remembered how much she needed the elder fey, how easily she could unravel and then how easily Anu knitted her back together. Her mother’s love had never faded, and Mati’s need for her hadn’t either. Mati drew from all her memories of the silver toned fey, took a deep and hope filling breath and thought of all ways she wanted to open the door. All the things that truly mattered.

The tall female entered the room. A step was all she took, her body pausing at the sight of the covered body. She had never seen her like this, in bed and resting. But there was not a soft and restful look on her face, it was troubled and painful. Mati frowned, wondering how her body felt, wondering how the pain was and how deep it resonated in her form. She wondered where, and hoped that it wasn’t everywhere. Her eyes opened, small slits of the brilliant ocean that even in such a small amount left Mati feeling weightless as she drifted with her tide. Tears stung in the corners of her eyes, but she held them back. The frown that had been set on her face for hours upon hours was drawn into a small curved smile.

Hey she spoke, the meekest and softest voice ever spoken coming form her lips. She had missed her, worried for her and all the while hated that she had once more brought this hurt upon the other girl. Her stomach twisted, taking the hand that she extended as an invitation, and walking slowly to the bed. The Church female crouched beside it, taking in her face and savoring the warmth that matched her fluttering heart. Even in the devastation, she could not deny the feeling that rose when in Cambria’s presence. Mati clung to it, hoping desperately that Cambria still felt the same.

She didn’t know what to say, and as she came to the same eye level as the other female there was a silence that filtered between them. Violet orbs spoke volumes, their liquid color shimmering with the unshed tears that she painfully held. How are you feeling? She asked, voice still only just above a whisper. Her eyes glanced down at the smaller dark brown hand, and reached out to touch it.

Mati stood there for a few moments, a seeming fear or hesitance freezing her form. At first Cambria wondered at this, but then she switched their positions in her mind. If it were here coming to see a hurt Mati she too would be afraid of what she might see. They were both in luck though. Her wounds could have been much worse than they were, and her body wasn't really mangled. There were scrapes on her torso, some lost fur, but it would grow back and there wouldn't be any trace of the accident save what they held in their memories. The one that held her affection's voice was soft, soft and more meek than she ever thought the older fey capable of. Even if she did understand the reason she didn't like hearing Mati sound like that. It could have been so much worse. That's what Cambria had had to keep telling herself, and that is what Mati needed to see as well.

The Church wolfess came to her, knelt down by her bedside. The silence was overbearing, but the Marino wasn't sure exactly what to say either, especially not when she looked into those shimmering violet eyes. She saw the tears that threatened to fall on her beautiful cheeks and slowly she shook her head from side to side. "Don't cry," she implored. There was no reason to cry, not for her, not over this. She hurt now, but she would be fine soon. There wouldn't be any lasting damage. She didn't want Mati to feel bad or guilty over this. This was no one's fault, and certainly not her's. They had just been in the wrong place at the wrong time. That was all. There was no guilt to place on any shoulders. "I've been worse." It was true, her accident with the powdered drugs had been much worse. This pain was merely physical while that had been emotional and psychological. Back then she had suffered for weeks. This pain would not last that long, especially not to the degree she now felt it. Besides, she wanted to wipe away the fear from those eyes she cared for so much. Cambi didn't want to see that there.

As Mati reached for her hand the Marino gently placed her's in the large brown one, even that slight contact numbing the aching of her body. It wasn't only her hand she felt though, there was a cloth tied around her palm. When her eyes searched she saw it was the same on the other hand. "What happened?" She didn't know that Mati had gotten hurt as well.

LOVE

The floor was hard against her knees, but Mati felt some place else. Cambria took her there. It was different now, deeper into her emotions and clouding her thoughts with their intensity. She had feared the worse, and Mati found that she had never been so afraid. Sweet voice told her not to shed the tears that were floating under her eyelids, but Mati saw all the reason to do so. What had happened before had been horrible, so bad that she could understand completely if Cambria thought that her bumps and bruises were nothing compared to it. Still, it was not the same. Everything had changed, and the way Cambria stood in Mati’s eyes had changed. Dramatically and so quickly if felt like her head was spinning. Then she had been someone she cared for, a pup that was helpless. Now, Mati felt so powerfully that the thought of loosing her for good brought the threat of tears to her eyes. Cambria may have known worse, but Mati hadn’t.

I was scared. I didn’t know, no one would tell me. She spoke hastily but with the same low and quiet tone. No one had told her much, not as much as the female desire to know. She felt left out, lost in wondering and doubt. The others likely figured she needed just as much rest as Cambria, having been so emotionally worn. But they had all been wrong. The onset of rest and relief only stated to filter into her body now that she knelt beside Cambi’s bed. I’m glad your okay. Okay in a way that would leave her eventually unscathed and whole. She was in pain, and the Church fey knew not how to fix the hurt. She gave a small smile, wanting to help in any sort of way. Her eyes traced the soft lines of her face, finding no lack of beauty as she did so, even in such a state.

The smaller darker paws found refuge in Mati’s bandaged one. Her heart jumped, fluttering at the connection. Mati gently laced her fingers between Cambria’s, craving the contact and the affection. Just a scrape. She assured the other female, feeling a smile come to her naturally and honestly. My mother doesn’t do as good a job as you, makes it look a lot worse. She couldn’t even feel the sting, just being near the healer was all Mati truly needed. Her eyes danced long the mixed shades of brown that they created, still smiling. Her worry and fear had slowly turned to a gratefulness, though her eyes remained glistening with unshed tears but no longer created by her overpowering fear. She was so lucky, in so many ways.

Yes, she had been afraid, deathly afraid. Perhaps that fear she had felt yesterday had been worse than what she had felt all those months ago. Then she hadn't understood what was going on, hadn't understood how close she had come to the brink. Hours ago she had though. Cambria had known that death was breathing down her neck and it had frightened her horribly. She had panicked beneath the beam, trying valiantly but in vain to free herself. If it weren't for her uncle, she likely wouldn't have made it out in as good of shape as she had, if at all. It was funny, how one brave and selfless action like that could repair a rift she didn't think would ever be healed. Her strong feelings against her mother's brother had vanished since he had come to her side and saved her from that horrible fate. That was one good thing that had come from this frightening event.

Still though, while the fear may have been greater this time, the lasting effects would be minimal. Her body would heal and she wouldn't be pressed into a deep hole of depression. There wouldn't be the same emotional scars carved into her spirit. To her, this was a relief, but she could understand why it would be hard for Mati to see things that way. Maybe she hadn't been the one hurt physically, but she had been on the outside having to go through all the what ifs and feeling guilty. "I was scared too, but I'm not scared anymore. It's all going to be fine. I'm going to be fine." Her gaze locked firmly onto Mati's, needing to nail the last thing she had to say deep into the other wolfess' heart. "We're going to be fine too." Cambi wasn't sure if they really were a "we", they hadn't spoken of it, but she needed Mati to know that she didn't blame her, and that she didn't think any of this was her fault. It wasn't, and she couldn't have her thinking that way. Her smile grew as the Church fey said she was glad that she was okay. Even though she didn't want Mati worrying or feeling bad over this, it did feel good to see how much the other cared. It made her hopes for their possible future swell in her chest.

A contented sigh was pushed from her lungs and her eyes closed briefly as their fingers locked in, their hands firmly clasped. Even that small connection felt so wonderful, made her feel whole and healthy again. A soft chuckle left her at the small joke, but Cambi found that when Mati mentioned her mother she couldn't connect a face with the title. Any and all knowledge that the pale D'Angelo woman was her friend's mother had been buried and she had never seen much significant interaction between Mati and another adult female. "Your mother...I don't think I know who she is..." the girl said with a sheepish smile. How embarrassing, to be unaware of the other female's parents. She felt she should have known this information innately, but it had completely slipped beneath her radar.

Big Grin

Her words were uplifting hope. Caresses against her ears, light yet firm in their tone, pushing forward the truth and confidence that the other female felt towards their meaning. Mati felt her the strong one, and felt supported by her knowing and clear vision of the future once more. Things were always so hazy for the Church female, the what ifs could easily consume her. Cambria guided her straight, set her back on the path. She was grateful that she had someone who moved through life with such faith in her emotions, just allowing fate to play its card, and just moving with the tide that drifted them together. Mati was no longer scared, knowing that Cambria would be healthy and recover without a visible scar or an emotion scratch. Then a small sentence came fluidly from Cambi’s mouth and it made Mati’s violet eyes lift immediately to find the sea foam green gems.

I like us. She confessed, her smile small as she was too timid to let the larger and fuller grin show. Her heart beat with a quickening rhythm, pattering at the idea that they were more then just two single beings, the thought that they could be something much more. She felt all the emotions, the roots had been planted and their relationship had only grown stronger as the days past and the misunderstandings and small tragedies ensued. They were there, but Mati just didn’t know what it was yet. They words to describe them still unknown.

Mati could not hide the small amount of surprise that she felt when the aching female spoke once more. A bit of embarrassment was written on her features, but Mati could see how such a thing could be over looked. Anu was no blood relation, and Mati did not know of any relationship that the younger female might have with her mother. Anu, she is my adoptive mother. Mati spoke, her voice still quiet but only for the sake of those the might still be sleeping at this hour.

Cambria had been so young when Nani left, Mati wondered if she even knew that she and Anu had once been mated. It was something that Mati wanted to keep to herself, but such concealment seemed like outright dishonesty in Cambria’s presence. My birth mother was Naniko. The past tense simply slipped from her lips, and gave forth to the true feelings that the Church female had for the white wolfess. She had been part of Mati’s life, and the brown she-wolf did not think she would ever be again. Mati was silent, wondering if Cambi would think anything of it. Her hand was a bit tense, her fingers holding on in the hopes that she would not pull away.

It was somewhat strange for her to be in the stable position. To be in the position of the person who showed the way and kept the course steady and defined. It wasn't her usual spot in the scheme of things. Cambria was usually quiet, timid and going along with whatever was easiest. There were few times that she ever deviated from that path. One was when she was doing her job as a healer. It gave her sense of clarity and strength that she hadn't ever known before because she knew that she needed to be strong for the person she was helping. The other time was now with Mati. She had been the one to come forward about her feelings, the one to tell the older female that it was alright, what they felt and wanted. Now she was telling her that things were still alright. It was strange and new, but at the same time she couldn't imagine acting any other way or saying anything else. The feelings she felt for the Church fey were too strong.

The words that were spoken made her heart skip a beat. The idea of "we" had come naturally to her and she had spoke it without a second thought. She really didn't know how Mati would react to the statement, if she would at all, but now she couldn't help but feel a certain giddiness take over her despite her current status. "You do? Really?" Here she reverted back to her usual self, questioning every position answer or statement that came her way. Cambria just wanted to be sure, wanted to know that her ears weren't playing tricks on her. She wanted to know what this meant for the two of them. "I like us too," she quickly added. The Marino did, she really did. From the very start of her feelings for Mati she had wanted them to be more than just friends, more than the two separate beings they were. She wanted what her parents had for them. That was the large desire locked inside her heart.

Hopefully Mati would understand and forgive her ignorance. Obviously she knew who her parents were, everyone did. It was so strange that she didn't know the same information about the woman kneeling by her bed. The name that came was unexpected and her eyes surely showed this. "Anu! Really? I had no idea." It was sort of funny, that Anu was the one who Cambria had first confessed her preferences to, and here she was, falling in love with the Lt. General's adoptive daughter. Somehow, she thought the humor of it wouldn't be lost on the kind older fey either, when she found out. She was glad that Mati had such a nice mother, but that only brought up more questions, as to who her birth mother and father were. It opened up deeper holes that were unfilled in her information, though one was quickly revealed.

The next words came also as a shock, though of a different variety. Cambria couldn't help the tension that filled her body, but she did not pull away from Mati's hand, didn't even think of doing so. The name simply transported her back to that dark time and her thoughts towards the woman were anything but positive. She had no idea that Anu had ever been with her, it seemed strange, someone she viewed as so wonderful being with the one person she hated. It didn't change her opinion on the Lt. General though. Anu had been there, she had seen, and she had stood beside her mother that day in the rain. Most importantly though, it didn't change how she felt about Mati. She had been there too, she had seen the pain the woman had wrought. "I hate her." The words came out before she could think to stop them, a strange darkness in her eyes. That darkness soon cleared though and she felt guilty for saying it. "I'm sorry...I shouldn't have said that to you..." Not when she didn't really know how Mati felt about her birth mother.

:3

Mati had never been with anyone, in a way that Cambria had described them. But it wasn’t odd, or a difficult feeling to accept. It was nice, something that Mati wanted and something that she hoped would grow. She nodded her heard softly, steeping up to be the confirming entity at this turn in their path. She was set on this, secretly committing herself to something that she had yet to truly understand at it’s fullest. She wanted it, and no longer feared what might happen. Cambria had opened her eyes to it, showed her the door and helped her walk through it. She was ready to be led and to lead, and do what it took to keep them safe and happy. Mati’s smile widened at her next few words. Though Mati had been sure that what she felt for Cambria was mirrored in the girl’s heart, she couldn’t help but allow her heart to jump at the words that confirmed it. Cambria like them, together in the way they were.

Of course she would certainly forgive the questions that Cambi held. She was happy to explain anything for her, and her ignorance wasn’t seen as anything more then a small unknowing. Her surprise only lasted a moment, remembering that her relationships were not on for public display, and she was a bit ashamed of the fact. Her life was not something she thought to be significant, not in the way so that everyone would just know. But, it meant that she had not been spending the time with her mother that she should. It meant that in a way she had failed Anu. It was a job, being a parent. But there was also a responsibility in being a daughter, something Mati had not truly fulfilled. Yeah. She spoke with a smile and a nod. She was proud that she could say that Anu was indeed her mother, and that She raised us like her own. They were hers. Mati knew that blood tied two together, but thought little of it.

Their fingers stayed laced, and her violet eyes watched them as the room grew silent. She was so ashamed, so bitter and so scarred by the white female’s actions that she found it hard to look at the other girl now. The words that were spoken were harsh, and Mati had never heard such a thing come from the lips of Cambria. Her eyes were forced back to her face, making sure that yes they had indeed come from her mouth. There was no shock written on her features, though her ears tilted away with the rising uncertainty. The apology was unnecessary, You have every right to. Mati said, taking a deep breath and letting her eyes drift away. Gently she felt the other’s hand against her own, gaining a sense of comfort and strength from the contact. She has never tried to contact me, not since I found her burning down a house near the city, right after everything happened. I don’t think of her much, well I try not to. she spoke truthfully. She wasn’t important in the green eyes of her mother, and so the woman would no longer be important to her. Naniko had moved on, given birth to another litter and she could only try to help prevent that same neglect from happening to them.

Mati strived to be everything that her dam and sire were not, and to never see the seminaries that she shared with them. She would not be shaped by their blood.

As Mati nodded in confirmation of her question the girl felt her cheeks burn warm beneath her chocolate fur, her eyes taking on a sparkly appearance. Hope exploded in her chest and she wished she could jump up and down on her bed for joy. Even after she had found out why Mati had reacted so oddly to her and they had kissed she hadn't been certain where this was going, if anywhere. Cambi hadn't wanted to jinx anything, hadn't wanted to make any assumptions that could prove to be false and lead to disappointment. To know that the other female wanted this, wanted them, brought a joy to her that she couldn't even begin to describe. Though that joy was displayed perfectly on her face. She looked at Mati, her eyes shimmering like the sun reflected off of the sea. Words weren't necessary, they would only be clumsy in the face of something so huge. She didn't know what love felt like firsthand, but she did know that she had the capacity to love Mati, and she wanted to.

Cambi still felt a little embarrassed that she hadn't know who Mati's parents were, especially since Anu was one of them and she knew Anu very well. The elder girl didn't seem to worry too much about her lack of knowledge though and if anything that helped her to push that embarrassment aside. If Mati didn't see anything wrong with it then there was no reason for her to worry about it. "I can imagine so. Anu is so kind. She's helped me a lot." The Lt. General had been there to help her understand what was going on with Leafy and to help her understand and come to terms with the fact that she felt attraction to other females instead of males. She had also been the one to grant her the corank of Practitioner. "It's nice that our mothers are so close," she stated softly. At least there would be no worries of their parents not liking one another if this did become serious, what was between them.

She felt a sense of shame emanating from the Church fey as the realization of her birth mother came to light, and while she could understand why it was there, Cambria didn't see any reason for Mati to feel that way. As far as the incident that had scarred her went, Mati had been there for her. She had spent hours looking over her and making sure her status didn't deteriorate more. Children weren't responsible for the actions of their parents. That wasn't how things worked. Cambi was responsible for her words though. She almost took them back, but she couldn't. They were true, what she truly felt in her heart. It relieved her to see that the harsh statement hadn't seemed to affect Mati adversely, that was what she hadn't wanted to do. Through their touching hands she could feel the pain that the white D'Angelo woman had caused to Mati too. Cambria wasn't the only victim of all that had happened that day.

Her fingers gently squeezed Mati's hand, hoping it would offer her some small amount of comfort. Then, something dawned on the younger girl. "My uncle's children...they're your siblings," she said as if in some sort of daze. Ehno risking himself to come to her aid had mostly erased all of the resentment she had held towards him, but her feelings about his pups were still muddled and confusing. "I don't know how to feel about them. I don't blame them for what happened, but...I don't know..." she couldn't explain what it was she felt. It was foggy and unclear.

your distractions-R-US

Just moment before entering the room the brown wolfess had been completely different . There had been claws in her heart, drawing it down in into the pit of her stomach. There was so much worry, so much internal grieving. She could have just let it go, but then it would have made the possibilities real, realer then the already felt in her heart. But everything was different. It felt like the same revelation and the same uplifting as when they had met in the woods. Alone, only their quiet voices and a reassuring word breaking the silence. Her worries were gone, the ones that prayed for her health and wellbeing. True she was hurt, and such a thing needed to be monitored and attended to, but it could be worse. Her world could have fallen apart, and thus Mati’s would have soon tumbled after it.

It was all before Cambria’s time. Before she was even old enough to truly understand the complexity of relationships. Mati couldn’t hold her ignorance against her, no one spoke of it, and those involved tried to rarely think about the past-Commander and her fall from her high seat. That was her mother’s life, and she knew Anu tried to move on when she could. The elder of the pack was fragile in some ways. She had seen the hurt in her mother’s eyes, but also the strength that helped her move on. It was not surprising to know that Anu was close to Cambi, Your mother has helped me quite a bit. So has your dad. She said with a smile, thinking back to the many times one or the other had either taught her something or helped her get through a rough time in her life.

Me too. Mati admitted with an equally soft voice. It was nice, to know that Savina already liked her. It was suddenly so important to know, and to be sure that Cambi’s parents knew her and even approved of what sort of wolf she was. Everything surrounding Cambria had grown and become far more important then it had been just the day before.

Mait felt the smaller fingers hold hers. Her heart jumped into her throat, and as it settled the wolfess spoke. Violet eyes came to the oceans the dwelled within Cambria, her words unsure and giving way to know the haze in which they came from. Mati knew that feeling, knew it so well and had been ashamed of it as well. I know. She spoke, taking the darker hand in two of hers. Her fingers unfurled, black nose finding the soft palm and touching it lightly. She kissed it, reassuring her that there was nothing to worry about. That world was far away, they were all far, far away. Mati so easily pushed them there, keeping the world that threatened to hurt her at arms length. I met his girl, Rio. She seems happy and safe there. Mati spoke almost to simply calm her own anxiety that surrounded the litter.

s'my job! Big Grin 500+

The one thing that had probably allowed her to get any rest at all was knowing that Mati hadn't been hurt. That was something that had brought her some amount of peace when she had been trapped in that failing building. Her panic had greatly overwhelmed it, but she was glad that Mati wasn't stuck with her. It would have been awful if she had. Or if the roof had fallen on her instead of in front of her. The thought had made her shudder and made her want to throw up. Already she couldn't imagine, didn't want to imagine, her life without the Church wolfess. Already the other fey was rooted deeply in her heart and losing her was something she couldn't imagine. It would be a pain like she had never felt before. Cambria had a feeling that that was what Mati had felt while she hadn't known how she was. She hated to have caused her that pain, but at least everything was alright now. Neither of them would have to face that despairing future.

The knowledge that her own parents had been there for Mati made her feel good. It didn't surprise her either, though. Both her mother and her father were very caring people. Of course kids usually thought that of their parents unless given a reason not to, but she had never seen any evidence that her parents weren't as caring towards others as they were towards her and her siblings. Her mom was the leader of the pack after all, and she knew she cared deeply for everyone in the pack. It was why she worked so hard to keep everyone safe and happy. "I'm glad to hear that, that they've helped you." It was not only important that their parents got along, but also that they liked Mati, and that Anu liked her. There was still some nervousness about what the reactions would be when and if they ever came forward with their budding relationship, but she trusted that all of their parents would be happy for them. The ones that lived here, anyway. Anu would definitely understand, and her father too, and there was no reason for her to think that her mother would be against it in any way. Everything would work out, she just needed to think and believe that.

Cambria had had a feeling that Mati might understand the confused feelings that whirled inside of her when it came to the pups that had been born between Ehno and Naniko. It must have been just as much, if not more, awkward for Mati to know that her birth mother had had new puppies. She tried to think about what it would feel like, but it was impossible for her to imagine her mother or father doing anything of the sort and not being together. It was one of the solid facts that held her life together and she was unwilling to break it, even hypothetically. Mati's words and the soft kiss on her palm sent a calming warmth through her battered form and her eyes fluttered closed momentarily, breathing in deeply. Her head turned, and looked back towards Mati as she spoke of one of the girls, one of her unknown cousins. "What's...what's she like?" Hearing the pup's name and even such little about her opened up an unexpected curiosity about her. "What was it like for you...meeting her?" Maybe if Mati had made it through such an encounter alright there was hope for her too. Cambria didn't want to leave herself out of any more family gatherings, it had been painful enough the first time.

Mati couldn’t imagine living in a place that did not have the structure and the support that their mother’s had built. Of course they had family, blood or adoptive to care for them. But beyond that, the friends that had grown to be cemented to their lives that it was not far fetched to call them family and loved ones. They were lucky, to have those that would accept them and teach them to be just as caring and loyal. Mati thought about talking to her mother about Cambria in the past, but before it had been a distant dream. Now she was certain that the conversation needed to happen, and she did not worry that Anu would not accept who she had grown to be. It was Anu, whose judgments were few and far between. Who loved another female and had in the past. Mati could say the words now, for the reaction would be nothing but positive. Or so she wished and hoped and felt confident in the presence of her heart’s captor.

It was easy to read the reaction on her small affections on the other girls face. Her own face grew warm, and for the first time truly took a moment to see how she affected the other woman. It only made her want to be closer.

It was hard to think of and harder to talk about, but Mati was glad that she had Cambi to share it with. They were in such similar situations, and their feelings seemed the same as well. She did not feel like she was being judged.
The answer to her question came fairly easily, She’s sweet. Naïve and happy. It was the only way Mati knew how to describe Rio. The young fey had no idea of the dangers in the world, and no one was teaching her. Though Mati’s main concern still remained to be neglect by the mother they shared.

I knew of them, but never expected to run into one. She didn’t know about me, but was excited to have a big sister. She spoke honestly and freely. It was so easy just to talk to her. But, I’m jealous. Jealous that they have her because she left when I still needed her. And scared, scared that they will be left too It made little sense for she liked Rio while feeling bitterness at the same moment. Mati was embarrassed to say such a thing, and looked at the light brown finger that now traced along Cambi’s wrist and lightly up her arm.

oh my, Cambi's getting tingly in her nautay parts :o 500+

Crimson Dreams was her home, and never had she yearned for another or wished this one was different. The security that was present here was so special. She knew because the moment she stepped foot outside of the boundaries of this land that security melted away. She supposed there was a similar sense of that in AniWaya, but it was mostly due to the kind aura surrounding the Kalona, as far as she could tell. Cambi remembered well the first time she had gone there as a small pup and she had been nervous until Noir had befriended her. She supposed it could be because this was what she had always known and been familiar with, but she didn't even have to be around anyone to feel safe here. The Dreaming lands were her bubble of comfort and she had no desire to ever leave it.

It felt good to know that she wasn't the only one who had such undefined feelings towards the litter that had been produced between those two adults in their lives. Thinking she had been the only one had made her feel even more guilty about her inability to feel anything positive for them. Even her mother had seemed to have been able to accept them. Savina was much more mature than she was though, perhaps that had something to do with it. Cambria could accept her deep feelings of negativity for the D'Angelo woman, they were justified, but she couldn't find the same solid ground when it came to the pups. It wasn't their fault, but at the same time they represented the very act that was such a betrayal to her, and undoubtedly to Mati as well. The girl wished there was a simple solution to their conundrum, but there didn't seem to be. It was just something they would have to work through slowly.

She took in all that Mati told her, trying to picture the small girl. She sounded no different than any other pup. The description could have easily fit her or her sister when they had been little. She let silence reign for a moment before she moved her lips to project her voice once more. "I didn't know about them for a long time. My mom wanted to keep it from me to protect me. She did until she couldn't anymore, when my uncle brought them here to visit. I refused to go to the family meeting though. I was too angry and too hurt." She could understand how Mati felt. Both concerned and upset. It was similar to how she felt, though for different reasons. "Ehno will always be there for them, even if she isn't. He's done things he shouldn't have but...he's a good man, and he loves his family. All of them." Now that she was past her anger she could see that this all was just as hard for her uncle as for everyone else. His life was split in two due to what had happened. Still, she knew that those pups would always have their father, even if their mother continued in her failings.

The finger tracing lightly up her arm stole some of her breath away and she felt strong feelings rise up in her gut in the form of heat. It was not dissimilar to the feelings the touches Lolita had lavished upon her had made her feel, though even with such a small hint of it she could tell these were stronger, more intense. Her slender fingers grabbed at Mati, her eyes looking into her. "Come here," she said softly. Cambi wanted her closer, so much closer.

She would push the Naniko woman away, and try to forget as she tried to forget anything that had hurt her. The trespasser that had attacked her, the dark male at the University that had sought to take everything from her. The pain of loosing Haven to another pack, and then the abandonment she had endured from Naniko. The feelings needed to be forgotten, and a future forge that was without all those ounces of hurt. It could, she knew that she would be able to move on. She had lived after Corvus had drawn the deep lines into her arms, and she became whole after loosing such an import piece, as Haven would always be to her. Mati could see that what her brother had done was fate, for in the end they were all happy and would always love one another. That pain had certainly been then easiest to fade away, sadness that needed only a small reassurance to help it disappear.

The puppies, they were like salt on an open wound. Evidence that there had been happiness among all the pain of such a situation. Happiness that could not be shared by all those that had been hurt. But Mati also knew what it was like to be born from a situation that was not ideal. Her sire had been a rapist and a murder, and it was something that she would always need to live with. The ones that had been born from the tragic experience that Cambria and Mati shared did not need to live with such a memory. It was not their fault, no one could help that they were born or the circumstances that surrounded it. But their feelings would not always see so clearly, the emotions something beyond their control. They would need to forgive themselves, and allow the resentment to take its course and leave their hearts.

Mati listened intently, her eyes focusing on the other female’s face. Her mouth turned into a small frown, not liking the idea of anyone keeping something from her, though she could understand completely where the mother was coming from. If Naniko had brought them, and thought to have a small meet and greet, Mati was not sure if she could have witnessed it either. Her features turned sympathetic, understanding completely. I’m happy that they have him. Mati spoke. They would need him, Mati knew that much. She needed Anu, more then she would ever realize or admit. She was glad that they all had him, and though Mati had taken her time in forgiving him she felt as if they could and would move away from all this unhappiness.

Her touch was light, idle but far from was thoughtless. The wolfess gave a small sigh, silence filling the room around them. It never filtered between them, or at least Mati could not feel the cold quiet. She heard Cambria, felt the unspoken emotion and always knew warmth in her presence. It trailed up to her ears, and her heart sounded there and now with the small dose of wordlessness it could be heard thumping away. Her eyes had fallen back to the slender hand that she held, and her ears swiveled at the sound of her voice. It was different, quieter and filled with something heavier then even the weighed emotions of the previous topic. Eye glanced upwards at the invitation, and even though her stomach grew warm and filled with the flutterings of small nerves she did not hesitate to rise.

She lifted the covering slightly, not wishing to let the warmth escape from beneath them. Eyes caught the sight of her form that had been hiding, and she took a small breath that reminded her how important oxygen was. She had wanted to be beside her the moment she had come through the door, though the feeling could only be translated now. Softly and gently as not to jostle the healing female Mati lay beside her. A small sigh escaped her, and she felt a foreign feeling fill her stomach to replace the little wings that tickled it. It was heavier, and heated as if it had been sitting beside a well built fire. Her eyes danced over Cambria’s face, taking in the soft lines and the beautiful colors from an angle she yet to capture them from. There was the same sorrowful and yet grateful feeling that rose in her again, seeing her like this. The threat of loosing her and the thought that she had come so close to it returned. Instantly Mati knew that she never wanted to be without her. She knew then that this was not something she ever could survive without.

Fear of bringing any pain to the other female’s body Mati only brought her hand up to her face. A space resided between them, a barrier that lived only because the younger woman was still fragile, still weakened. Light Earth tones fingers brushed stands of fur from her face. Your beautiful. She spoke, her words so soft, so quiet that the rest of the world would have no idea that she had even spoken.

Cambria's coping mechanism had also been to do her best to forget what had happened to her. That's what she had strove hard to do with the accident after Amata was able to finally pull her from her severely depressed state. She avoided speaking of it, thinking of it, anything. Whenever it was brought up she drew into herself, creating a wall in an attempt to keep all the bad feelings a memories out. The wall never worked that well though, and eventually she would burst into tears, clawing for comfort from whoever was near. It was easier now, if the subject was touched upon, but she doubted even after so long that she could speak of it in depth without crumbling. The other traumatic experience she had endured in the city had been mostly erased the same day it had happened. Her encounter with Lolita had seen to that, the intensity of their interactions taking the prevalence in her mind. Even so, Cambi did not like going to the city on her own.

It seemed that the healing process had finally gotten on its way though, as far as her uncle and his children were concerned. Ehno's actions had been a soothing salve upon her wounded heart and she could see him now without anger in her eyes and pain her chest. It wasn't necessarily forgiveness on her part, but at the very least she was willing to live with it and move on. To no longer hold that transgression against him every time their paths met. A long road needed to be traveled before she could feel equanimity towards her cousins also, but she felt that she had finally started down that way. Speaking with Mati about it, someone she cared for so much and who shared her feelings, had very much helped. They were coming from similar places on this and that made a great difference. The other adults helped her, and didn't judge her, but they couldn't wholly understand what she was going through. Mati could.

There hadn't been a millisecond that the girl had been mad at her mother for keeping the truth from her. She understood completely why she had, and the reasons had all been borne of her love and need to protect her. If she had found out right when it had come to light, undoubtedly she would have spiraled back into the dark place it had taken her so long to crawl out of and she couldn't say with any confidence if she could have come back out again. It was not an easy thing to escape from. It was sticky like tar and sapped your strength and energy, leaving you to be enveloped in the pitch blackness with no hope. If she had been in her mother's place, she would have done the same thing. A small smile lighted her face as Mati spoke, thinking perhaps this was a good place to leave this topic. Now, she just wanted to enjoy her company. To be with her and forget the troubles of the world outside.

Her request hadn't been thought out. It had been a sudden and primal need. After something so frightening, the need to be close to those she cared for the most. Even with the shortness of their newly realized time together, Mati had quickly climbed the ladder in her heart. There was more than that though, but she kept those thoughts and urges locked away for now. Now wasn't the time. Cambi looked at her though, wondering if she would come into the bed with her, afraid if perhaps she had been too forward again. The older fey rose though, and ever so gently lifted the covers and lowered herself beside her on the bed. A great contentment washed through the slight wolf and she wished she weren't so sore, otherwise she would wrap her arms around Mati and hold herself tight and close. That wasn't possible now, but her hand once again found Mati's beneath the cover and held it, their fingers locking.

The loving fingers on her face made her smile, her eyes closing and relishing their touch. The words filled her with an intense warmth and she knew she was blushing. "You make me feel beautiful," she replied just as softly. Cambria craned her neck towards Mati, her muzzle rubbing against the other female's. Please don't ever let this go away, the girl prayed silently. She didn't want to ever be without this.

look @ this perfect table!!!... <3

She had always wanted to feel this way, even before she knew what this was. Before she could even put it to words (though such a thing was still a difficult task), and before she could see it in Cambria, Mati had wanted this. The yearning to belong to a pack was instinctual drive, and Mati knew that the wanting to be close to one single being was instinctual as well. It was strong in her, and heart wishing for one soul that it could connect to without insecurity and without fear. She needed that; her past had driven her to need the safety and the security that the young and fragile girl gave her. Unknowingly she was scared that someone stronger then she would hurt her, run from her as those in her history had. But that internal construction did not shadow the pure honest feelings that the Marino girl brought to her. If anything that had only made it easier for her to forget her questions and the what –ifs that tore her heart and mind to pieces and made her step away from Cambria during that first embrace.

It was love. It was the way she had grown to know those close to her. It was the desire to never be without and to always know that she would be there for her. It was the beating of her heart, and a new warmth that rose in her and could not be ignored. Mati wanted to protect her, want to always be close and to always know that their feelings for each other would live as long as they did.

It was love. But Mati didn’t know that yet. Love was powerful and overwhelming and frightening. It had brought her to tears when she had thought that maybe she would need to live without the other female, and it had almost destroyed her at the notion that she may have caused her death. And it brought her the most moving and indescribable relief knowing that she was whole and that she would heal to the perfection that Mati always considered her to be.

Cambria’s soft words brought forth another need. To show her that she was more beautiful then anything that had ever been born from the Earth. Prettier then any flower that blossomed, clearer then any cloudless sky. She didn’t know how, her words the only way she could express it, but she wanted to instill that feeling in her forever.

The Church female linked her fingers with Cambi’s, and wanted to be closer. The nose found her own and Mati closed her eyes, smiling as she felt the comforting touch. She wished to bury her nose in the fur of her mane, to let the relief that welled in her eyes pout out and to finally feel that they were safe. Her palm lay softly on the dark chocolate cheek, fingers touching the soft fur that rested at the base of her ear. Violet eyes opened and watched her resting face. There was a heated tide that rolled through her body that she had never experienced, and it almost hurt to not be able to hold the smaller woman against her. Mati moved her nose to meet Cambria’s, her lips seeking the ones that match them so perfectly in the need to feel the energy that ran though her each time they did and curb the dull ache that she so suddenly felt.

Cambria had always dreamed to find someone to love her as much as her father loved her mother. In her childhood days she had dreamed of her prince, the one who would come and woo her and sweep her off her feet. It was only recently that that image had altered, changed from male to female. Almost right as it had, almost directly after the realization and understanding had come to her, she had seen Mati through new eyes and knew that her heart yearned to be connected to the elder fey. It was something she couldn't hide, couldn't deny. It was stronger than any fear or any bout of shyness she had ever experienced. Her attraction had emboldened her, allowing her to step outside her boundaries and voice her feelings to Mati. It was that had allowed her to hug her that same day. She had gotten a taste of those feelings not being reciprocated and it had hurt. It had made her feel like the world was less bright, and her future as well. The Marino hadn't known what to do, but thankfully the fate she feared hadn't been true. Mati did feel the same way and she had known their feelings could grow into something great if they let them.

When she had been laying in that barn, trapped, one of the fragmented thoughts that had run through her panicked mind had been if she died, she'd never be able to see Mati again. It had struck at her heart and brought tears to her eyes. She wanted to be able to see her beautiful face every day. To feel the way it felt to have her smaller hand wrapped inside of one of the Church fey's. To taste her lips and to smell her scent. Cambria craved all of that and didn't want it all ripped away as soon as she had come to have and appreciate those things. She was young, and inexperienced, but she knew how important those things were. They were just as precious as the air she breathed. She understood now how her parents felt, even if it were just a fraction of the grand love that linked Savina and Kansas. Their bond was a seedling, fresh and new, but it had potential, and more than anything Cambria wanted it to grow.

Being close to Mati, even if it wasn't as close as she wished they could be, was better than any painkiller. More soothing than any salve. The ache in her body wasn't gone, but what was beside her was so important and wonderful that it completely banished those things from her mind. She sighed contentedly as their muzzles touched, her tail wagging faintly beneath the covers. With that strong relief came drowsiness and she was feeling, with Mati here, she just might be able to get the restful sleep her body so sorely needed. The girl felt their noses touch and her lips reached out and connected with the other woman's, an electric surge running through her body. It momentarily fueled the heat that burned in her, but tiredness soon overwhelmed even that. She didn't break the kiss until her lungs burned for air, and then she took a deep breath and tucked her nose beneath Mati's chin. "Stay with me," she said, softer than a dove's coo. She didn't care if her mother came back to find them like this. She would understand, the girl knew she would. Cambria needed her here, with her, and she slowly drifted off to sleep with a smile on her face.
