Evening was approaching quickly, and the golden-orange color of the sky was slowly graying and fading, turning to deep blues and purples streaked with black. Only a thin sliver of the moon remained in the sky; the shadows deepened and darkened until they were solid objects, hulking figures of the deepest shade lurking in the forested territory. The scarred hybrid was hunting alone, and today her intended prey was small. A raccoon would have done rather nicely, and as the hunger gnawed at her stomach, the silver-shaded woman's determination increased. She was not so old and useless she could not still hunt for herself. The coyote woman still served this clan as its Centurion, and she had every intent to keep it that way.

Over the breeze, a faint scent caught her attention. It was the strange smell of death—old and unmistakable death, already fraught with decay and many weeks old. The earthy smell of upturned dirt also caught her nose, and an undeniable feeling of dread filled her chest. The twisting and gnawing hunger that had driven her from the comfortable depths of her cave was gone in an instant, replaced by some deeper and more primal hunger. This one was as familiar to Kaena as was the one for food, but so much harder to quench—this was the rough, greedy hunger for blood, the lust for revenge.

Almost automatically, mechanically, the silver-shaded woman turned and traced this scent, following it as it grew stronger. His scent was wrapped in with the smell of death, partners together wound so tightly about one another they had no hope of ever separating. He was death, and death was as much a part of him as vengeance was a part of her.

Should probably tag this m straight away.

Souls had departed and fled from their rotting corpses long ago. Whatever was left of their flesh and bones would not be allowed to rest in peace. They would all eventually dissolve and return to earth either way, but Haku wanted to bring fuel to Gabriel de le Poer’s blazing heart. Soon enough, the secui too would join the corpses lined up by the borders, but that temporary death resided in the future. Perhaps it was the doggish hybrid that would bite the dust first. The monstrous loner was not particularly concerned, for he was bringing terror to the world of the living. This was his purpose in life, and he was succeeding despite the unfortunate outcome of the war. He had hoped for them all to meet death, but this had not happened.

Decay was thick when he disturbed the resting bodies of the long deceased coyotes fallen during the war. Body parts lay scattered around the scene, and rot clung to his fur like a lover. The beast was quiet as he revelled in the death surrounding him. It reminded him of ancient, forgotten times where heads rolled daily in his glory. Once, the mortals had possessed the wits to worship him, but those beautiful memories had pretty much faded as his bodies had died and been discarded. Blue eyes found an unexpected figure entering the scene. Brown form stained with gore and rot turned fully to face approaching woman. They never turned to flee when that was the wisest option available.

you smell

The coyote woman was no stranger to the smell of death, but here it was overpowering in the air; it choked the nutrients and life-sustaining things from the very atmosphere around them. Or maybe it was just the demon breathing inside of the blue-eyed shell; maybe his breath took hers away. He had tasted her and he knew her blood—she had been lucky too many times, and the scarred woman knew that this death was meant for her. A surprising calm had crept over the Centurion; she was no stranger to death, and despite her fears, she was utterly and completely level. She would face him, and if she perished, so be it. Death would have something he'd yearned for for damn year eleven years now, and he would be satisfied.

The scars across his face were her handiwork, her very own from the first time they'd met one another. It was almost a year to the day, though the silvery woman was unaware of this fact. She did not count days or months, let alone years. She had known too many to track. Old flesh clung to him, leathery and green and still oozing the last remnants of life. The hybrid woman stared at him, her single burning eye looking on this mess of a man, and she laughed. It was a low, rasping sound, short and clipped. He had done his worst to her already; he could not hurt her as he had hurt her in the fall. Granting her death was simply doing her a goddamn favor at this point.

The world was still and unmoving. Slowly, the creature's jaws parted. Death was part of him. He had been born from death, tossed into a world flourishing with pulsing life only to extinguish it and turn its beauty into tragedy. To him, this was truly what was beautiful. They did not understand--did not see what he saw. They would never know the magnificent things he saw. Tayui would never again see her darling daughter with the golden eyes. So much blood had been spilled, but he could never stop--he always needed more from them. More. Yellow fangs sneered at the crazed woman. "More," the dark murmur sounded, meant for his own ears and not hers. They did not understand. Bloodied paws lined with sharp claws shifted. They did not see. His hunger would never end, but he never ceased his attempts to quench it. They did not taste. Haku Soul charged.

haku smells too (he really does right now lol) - 307

The scarred hybrid had dreaded this moment with every fiber of her being. She had looked toward this moment with hope and sheer dead all at once; in her fantasies she had always stood as she was now, she had always stood strong against him. In her nightmares she turned and ran, and he chased her and hunted her, he chased her until she could no longer run. She always woke before his teeth descended on her, but still the feeling of him on her flesh lingered long after the dream had passed, the creeping and shivering sensation that sent her roving and roaming through the night rather than sleep. Only when she was exhausted did she dare lie back down and attempt sleep again, only when she was too tired to dream.

Even as the silver-shaded coyote shifted, leaving herself at the halfway point between Lupus and Optime, the old gears in her brain turned. He would never fully release her; she knew this. His teeth would remain embedded in her flesh, drawing her blood, long after he perished. The coyote woman had been alive long enough to know this, and yet this did not change a thing. If she had her vengeance or not, he would always be with her—maybe that should have nullified revenge, but in the silvery coyote it only served to strengthen it, running hot like fire through her blood as he came for her. She moved as he charged for her, running straight at him as he did. The air could have been filled with fire or screams or nothing; the hybrid heard and saw nothing but the blue-eyed man before her, daring to the side of him just as they were to clash, aiming to rake her teeth against his shoulder, his side, wherever she could find a hold.

Her sudden move was expected. Few had ever met him head on when both forms were in heavy motion. He could not avoid her fierce teeth, but her bold attack had consequences. The moment he registered which way she darted, he threw his hulking form in her general direction, hoping to damage her digging hold on him as well as to disturb her balance. They had fought before and faced varying end results, but the upper hand was his; granted him by age and gender. She had no doubt been glorious in her younger days, but age could not strengthen a body forever. Haku was still in his prime years, though he knew that his own body slowly was giving up on him. He would face death soon enough, but it would not be brought on by this woman. He had wanted her once, but her blood was shared by her offspring and he had found a more than willing substitute. Ultimately, it was too late for his remaining plans to be executed. He had more than enough vessels to fall back on.

The physical wounds the chocolate-coated man had inflicted on her had long faded, but the other wounds he had put on her ran far deeper than any of her scars. They were still bleeding, and they always would—Kaena knew this from experience. Not even his death would allow those wounds to scab over and begin the healing process; she knew this from Kairo, her half-brother. He had been dead and buried a goddamn decade now, or close to it, and she still ached thanks to him.

The taste of blood in her mouth was a reward, a gratifying one indeed, but the silver-shaded coyote did not take even a millisecond to savor it; there was simply no time. As soon as her teeth had found a hold in his flesh, he bucked her off, shoving her backwards with his immense weight. Even half-shifted as she was, Kaena was far outweighed and outmatched. As she was thrown backwards, she twisted her body, landing on her feet and skidding for a foot or two before coming to a stop, keeping her teeth faced toward him always. There was no room for error, and showing her back to him would be one she would not live to regret.

She was thrown off but refused to fall. He did not hesitate as he darted after her, fangs fully disposed as his open jaws sought to destroy her face before she could take his. His weight far outmatched hers, and naturally he used this to his advantage; tossing it against her in his attempt to force her to lose her footing. The woman he had thought to be so beautiful. As always, the promise pulsed through her blood and was not owned by her alone. No, her daughter held that same sweet insanity within her red clotted veins. He did not desire the one eyes woman any less, but she had proven to be useless to him. She would not accept him and nor would the body, though it had shivered with that carnal desire back the black night in the library when he had attempted to plant his tainted seed deep within her womb. She could not carry fruit, but the younger generation could. And he hoped, hoped that the madness could continue through the Lykoi woman dressed in black with those poison eyes.

Death was a haunting shadow, and it was one Kaena had befriended long ago—she had danced this very dance her whole life, and now, for the first time, she saw it was a losing battle. She could not hope to keep this up and run from the devil forever; he would claim her sooner or later, whether he was in this form or another. There was no escaping this fact; the silver-shaded woman was doomed to die as everyone else in the whole damn world. Did that mean she would give in? Would she stop fighting him here, and take to the ground and wait for her fate? As inevitable as she knew her fate to be, the silver-shaded hybrid also knew the answer to these questions was a resolute and resounding no that welled up from her very center, crying out and still desperate for breath and life. Even as he knocked her backwards, her teeth flashed, twisting and snapping toward his face to gouge off what she could—an ear, an eye, his nose. She would have taken his cheek if this was all she could get. The impact on the ground was more than the hybrid had expected, and her foot twisted awkwardly. When she moved to stand, she found she could not rest her weight on this leg, and instead, she shrank back against the tree, pressing her side and back to it, hiding her injured foot to the side. She crouched and snarled, baring her teeth as if this would keep him away from her.
