Green old grass

It was actually a beautiful day today… the sun was hiding behind the clouds but it was rather warm, and he hated having to squint because of the sun, so to him it was rather perfect. He was walking just outside of COur des Miracles with Marahute sitting on her favorite perch, his shoulder, and just taking in the good weather. He was closing in on the shattered coast, he was curious as to what this area looked like. He’d been told about it, that it did have some very pretty sights to it. Right now he wasn’t close enough to those pretty sights, he’d found himself in a small area of grassland that he felt rather comfortable in although he could easily see the coast in the short distance, but he had enough of the water for now, he lived quite close to the coast. he perched Marahute on a now gloved hand and started exercising her wings, mostly by raising his arm up and pulling it down so she thought she was falling. It helped her gain some muscle in her wings for when she was ready to take flight. She wasn’t fully feathered yet, she was still nothing but a fledgling, but she seemed eager to take off on her own. She was already gliding a little clumbisly down from his arm, but she could do no more than that. It was fine with Niro It would be another month before the young bird would be ready to fly maybe even another half a year before she could hunt on her own. For now it was all practice. And he was training her with small whistles. He’d have brought out Tobias, but he was in a foul mood and would try to peck at Marahute, who was now much bigger than the little hawk.

He sat once he was done with the short exercise, thinking about the future and what it would bring, then his mind moved onto his latest, well… really first crush, Liliya… she was pretty, he sat daydreaming as the wind lightly blew against his light grey fur.

((Sorry this took so long!))

Element sighed as he looked up at the trees, their branches swishing and making small whispering noises. He'd been in the forests for some time, and although he enjoyed the sheltered, cool air the trees offered and the foresty smell it gave off, he wanted something...different, for now. He padded down along a small trail that had been made by what looked to be a larger animal - a bear? A canine? Even a larger cousin of Element? He shook his head free of these thoughts and walked until he found that the trees dithered away and he was in a grassy area.

He appreciated the grass underneath his feet, and the softness they offered. Taking a deep breath, he could smell the ocean off to the distance - perhaps if he walked enough, he'd get there. He took another breath and froze in his tracks - wolf? He glanced at where the scent was coming from, and he was right - he was upwind of a white male wolf. His appearance was rather peculiar - his fur was white, and the fur on his head seemed to be styled so that it stood straight up in a dark gray line. It was ornamented with various feathers, and his left ear seemed to be decorated with six little golden circles that seemed they would jangle if he walked.

On his arm was a large bird - he could tell it was still young, however, and the wolf was raising his arm up and down so that it would flap its wings whenever his perch 'fell'. Element sat and watched the practice some - it seemed that the wolf and the bird were friends or partners, like Daisuke and Schwarz were. This continued for a while until the wolf sat down and stared at the horizon, seeming to be deep in thought. Element stood and stretched, walking parallel to the wolf and then towards the ocean, so that he was sitting about fifteen feet next to the wolf - the wolf would notice him, but Element was far enough to run away if he attacked, and not close enough to be considered a threat.

It was Marahute who saw the cat first. Niro had paid no attention to the smell that came to his nostrils, but when the bird hopped onto his knee and gave a sharp warning to Niro that there was someone in the grass of interest. Niro was shocked out of his daze and looked on, he could somewhat see what his eagle could easily see. The cat was well camouflaged in the grass, it wasn’t easy to see the cat from as far away as he was. He stared at Element with interest. He’d heard of cats being companions to animals, he’d even seen the kitten that Amaranth had kept, well it was in their secret cave at the time she found the poor cold shivering kitten. There was something different about this cat from what Niro could see. He could tell it was a normal black domestic cat, but nothing too special, he did hear that some spoke common while others thought they were too good for it. But he did know they understood him. This cat seemed old enough to know what he was saying and he smiled.

What brings a little thing like you all the way out here.

He said, stroking the feathers on Marahute’s head, calming her so that she wouldn’t scare the cat away, and to let her know he had things under control. She liked it that way, it was the way of her type. Her parents both of them would have done everything to keep her safe except for any other brothers or sisters she’d have. They would have to fight for food or their own life, but it wasn’t like that with Marahute, she sat motionless, her eyes on the cat, but she didn’t look like she was about to get up and charge. Niro was glad with that, he’d seen her and how formidable she could be, of course… it was with a chicken who had chased his sister around the back yard of the Chien Hotel. Niro knew the young bird could take care of herself well enough if she really had to but she chose to let him take care of her.

((Sorry for making you wait, and shortness!))

Elemet looked on as the still-growing eagle hopped onto the wolf's knee and gave out a sharp cry, alerting the wolf of Element's presence. He saw as the wolf turned and was startled to find that his eyes were every bit as brilliant green as his own. He spoke -

"What brings a little thing like you all the way out here?"

Element mulled the question over in his mind and glanced out to the ocean. What exactly was he doing here, again? It seemed he was almost never doing something of great meaning, not since she...left. He shrugged and glanced back at the wolf, who was now calming down his eager hunting fowl. He dipped his head slightly. "I'm just wandering about," he said. Then, despite himself, he found a lack of words to describe anything else. He instead turned the attention to the wolf's eagle, who seemed calm now that the wolf was in control of things. "That's a very beautiful bird."

He smiled at the cat’s answer, so she was the type that could speak common, it was rare indeed, at least in his opinion, but he was pleased nonetheless, he knew cats were intelligent. That they could carry on a conversation as a wolf or a dog would, but to him it was strange, seeing the words come out of the cats mouth. Wandering

Wandering is all good for a while I suppose. I had my fill of that from my sister

He said, and he wasn’t lying, back before they came to Cour des Miracles they lived in the southern lands, mostly in Florida, which was nothing but chaos, it had ended in disaster, and unlike here there was no pack to calm the wolves down, they all multiplied like rats and soon it was over populated. Florida was the last they had seen their parents after they were attacked by some of these barbarian wolves. The thought of remembering it made Niro shudder. He was sure the cat had less problems than that at least. Then his attention was brought back to his bird, who seemed to get quite a bit of attention herself. Which gave her happiness.

Thank you very much, her name is Marahute.

He said proudly. He’d hatched the egg after acquiring it from a local golden eagle’s nest. There’d been three eggs in the nest so he was sure that he saved 2 of the three chicks lives, because most of the time one of the chicks in the nest tended to live and either kill the other one or make it starve to death.

And my name is Niro, and you are

He inquired the cat. He could see that the cat, having the almost opposite color coat he had, except for his mohawk seemed to share his eyes as well, which intrigued him. Maybe he was part cat, or something, he rarely saw wolves with such a brilliant green, but then again he didn’t meet many wolve’s at all and much less their eyes.

"Wandering is all good for a while I suppose. I had my fill of that from my sister."

Element nodded. Some wandered because they had no home; some wandered simply because they wanted to; some wandered to escape from others that made their lives almost unbearable; and some wandered because they were driven from the place they called home. Element saw that the wolf seemed deep in thought, then snapped out of it as Element made his remark about the bird.

"Thank you very much, her name is Marahute."

Element nodded again. The bird was beautiful, he noticed, and he cocked his head at her. She gazed back at him, her golden eyes seeming to pierce into him. The wolf spoke once more.

"And my name is Niro, and you are"

Element gazed at the wolf - Niro - who had the eyes the same shade as his own. "Element," he replied simply, and turned his emerald stare towards the ocean, where waves were lapping hungrily at the shore. Niro seemed nice enough, even if he seemed slightly cryptic; the remark about his sister had shown that. His coat was a pure white, he recalled as he looked out into the sea, and the feathers in his fur were the same color as Marahute. There was a long silence. Finally, Element spoke once more; "What brings you here?"

WC:--- OOC: >.< Sorry for the crap post, I’ll do better next run, and also, my cat… he’s a normal cat but he’s pure black and the size of a toy dog, Element reminds me of him <3

He didn’t have to think twice about the cats question. He pointed to the sea,

I enjoy a wave here and there, it seems to take a hold of my worries and washes them into the ocean.

He said, and it seemed quite true too, because whenever he visited the beach he’d found his stress was less and less like something taking everything stressful off his shoulders and pulling them into the ocean. He didn’t want to be a fish now that he thought of it, because if he wasn’t the only wolf who did this, there would be many worries, maybe that was why they enjoyed getting fished out of the water? Though… he doubted any of the fish wanted to be eaten.

I’ve never actually talked to a cat before, my parents always steered clear of them…

He admitted. He’d seen cats from far away, first time he saw a cat was in his and Amaranth’s secret cave. Now he found one that spoke common. This one wouldn’t be a pet like Amaranth’s cat though. He looked down at the cat. It was small, but was bigger than the cat they’d found before… he didn’t know how big a cat was suppose to be.

I bet you can see many things on your travels yes?

Niro asked, he did want to know more about the world around him, he was still timid, and cautious, he got this far, but he’d probably not get too much further without a real purpose.

It's fine! Sorry for the wait. Aw, that's cute! :3

"I enjoy a wave here and there, it seems to take a hold of my worries and washes them into the ocean."

Ah. Meditation was a great strength of Element's, and it seemed that this canine shared that particular aspect of life as well. It was a good way to wipe your mind free of any thoughts and worries that may have taken hold of you, and an excellent escape. It was vital, for Element, whose troubled mind and cluttered thoughts easily overwhelmed the small cat. Niro went on;

"I’ve never actually talked to a cat before, my parents always steered clear of them…"

Steered clear of cats? Element wondered why. Wolves, no matter what size, were almost always larger and stronger than even the largest of cats. But then, he thought, perhaps this wolf's parents had encountered the big cats; lions, tigers, enormous beasts that could rip a single wolf to shreds in an instant. Element had ancestors related to big cats, although they weren't as large or powerful; he was larger for it, though.

"I bet you can see many things on your travels yes?"

Element nodded. "Without a doubt," he said. "I've stayed mostly in 'Souls all my life, but I've been around the bend. I've seen some packs; I believe Inferni is one, and I think Cour de something. I can never remember all of them at once." He looked out onto the distant shoreline. "I've also read several things the humans have left behind. It's quite interesting; like a mark from the past."

He could tell the cat paid some attention to Niro, although he seemed slightly in his own world, either thinking on something else or imagining something. He wasn’t sure… maybe this was the odd behavior of cats. He wasn’t sure but it almost seemed the cat didn’t care much about everything around him, although Niro knew better especially when Element answered. It really had to have been a cat thing. He’d seen the same expression in the cat that Amaranth had found. At the mention of Cour de Niro’s ears perked up

Cour des Miracles, that’s the pack I’m in. I’ve heard of Inferni, from an older member who left there and joing the miracles pack. She didn’t care too much for them.

He said, he knew the reputation the coyote’s gave in that pack, although he knew a few coyotes who were quite nice, Rikka was one of them, but Niro was planning on steering clear of Inferni.

Oh, I’ve read quite a few things. My sister she taught me how to read with her. And well she tends to give me some senseless information about some of the books she reads.

Niro said, the cat was sounding kind of like Orin, but not as eccentric. It was good though Niro knew how to read, he liked it but there were only a few things that interested him, one of them was his falconry books that he had in his rooms. It had taught him pretty much everything he knew right now, and he’d experimented as well, trying to get his own way with the birds he was training.

The past is a wonderful thing, we just need to steer clear of the past that got the humans killed.

Niro said matter of factly, but this seemed to be an instinct to the wolves as of late… he wondered if it would do well for the future? It had only been twenty years after all… what would happen in over one hundred? Will wolves make the same mistake as humans did?

"Cour des Miracles, that’s the pack I’m in. I’ve heard of Inferni, from an older member who left there and joing the miracles pack. She didn’t care too much for them."

Cour des Miracles? What a pretty name. And Element knew of the Inferni, the Inferni that he had lost Flower at. He didn't know that wolves could move from one pack to another, however; he wondered if the former pack would feel hatred towards them for betraying them. Before he could let his thoughts dwell on the subject, however, Niro spoke again -

"Oh, I’ve read quite a few things. My sister she taught me how to read with her. And well she tends to give me some senseless information about some of the books she reads." Element's ears perked up when he heard this - this canine could read? He studied him. From the way he spoke and the manner he spoke of the books, Element knew that Niro was very intelligent. But one of the things Element was focused on was where they had gotten the books - was there a collection nearby? A way to get there? However, Niro seemed to have other things on his own mind.

"The past is a wonderful thing, we just need to steer clear of the past that got the humans killed."

The past was a wonderful thing - from his journeys in Halifax, he knew the humans had been incredibly smart. Smarter than Element, smarter than the wolves, and probably smarter than all of them put together. He didn't know how they did it, but the things they did were incredible. Amazing. Element didn't know what got the humans killed, but he did know that the wolves could do worse than to follow the path of the humans and become great like them.

Element's thoughts wandered to himself. Would he ever see the rise of the humans again? Were they all really gone, or did they have remnants of the past hidden in books? Could the Luperci, with their human-like appendages and hands, read what made the humans so incredible and go down the same path? The ideas intrigued and interested him. Would he ever live to see them rise again?

He realized, however, he was getting lost in thought and looked at Niro. "The past is a brilliant and beautiful thing, yes. Perhaps the wolves could follow in the human's footsteps and become great."

Niro thought on Element’s reply, thinking… well in many ways it would be a good thing, but in many others, well they had died for a reason. Niro knew they all could learn from what the humans did, their civilizations, and so forth… but the technology they’d had… well it had been so destructive, he knew from personal experience that there were canines that would use that technology to do just what the humans had. It scared him. He’d rather see that his future generation lived to hunt.

We do all learn from the humans, but some knowledge… is best left to the ages. At least some of the stuff they make… or we would perish just as they had and the past will repeat itself.

Niro said, he was subconsciously petting Marahute who was getting rather ruffled now, she didn’t want to be a petting toy and she was getting highly annoyed that the cat was getting more attention. She didn’t voice her opinion though. She just started flapping her wings to distract the both of them to her. Niro sigh, and put her on his knee letting her free. She only moved up and down his leg. She’d not wanted to touch the dirt or the grass here. Niro didn’t know why. She moved through the grasses back at home and it was all the same. But it seemed like she was rather scared of the cat. Niro couldn’t help but wish he could just tell the poor bird Element wasn’t going to eat her… then the thought came… cats like birds… would the cat really go after Marahute? But he reminded himself if Element were going to go after his bird at all, he’d have done it by now. Marahute’s feather’s were ruffled and poofed out, making her look bigger than she was, as she stared down the cat.

"We do all learn from the humans, but some knowledge… is best left to the ages. At least some of the stuff they make… or we would perish just as they had and the past will repeat itself."

This was true. Element had looked on in wonder at the decrepit buildings that littered the 'Souls area, as well as various books and other artifacts the humans left behind. From what he gathered, they'd lived a very fulfilled life. They hadn't only lived to hunt and eat and kill - they'd lived to be happy and pursue what they wanted in the large fields of whatever they chose. Element admired them, but he didn't envy them. His destiny was to be a cat - what kind of cat was up to him, but Element always would be a cat deep down. However...

"Isn't it true," he said, "that the disease that ended the humans brought the rise of the Luperci?" Perhaps it was just destiny that intelligent beings with hands such as those would rise again and make their recovery. But Element could sense that Niro wasn't exactly comfortable with the topic, and he didn't voice any further opinions. Instead, he focused on the bird that was now ruffling its feathers and moving up and down Niro's leg as if she were agitated. Element smiled at her as her yellow eyes pierced his green ones.

"Don't worry, Marahute," he said softly. "I won't hunt you." Her beautiful golden feathers glistened in the sun, making her seem like a miniature version of the golden globe that hung in the air. He looked at her fondly; he loved birds. Their freedom and beauty astounded him. He never hunted birds if he could help it; rather, he gazed at them circle in the air, their wings granting them the blessed gift of freedom. He turned to Niro. "I don't hunt birds," he said simply. "It would feel like a sin to hurt something so lovely and free. Is it the same with the wolves?"

Wc:350 (3 Points) OOC: hopefully we can keep it going a few more posts Big Grin Niro doesn’t know how to act around cats lolll

They may have done such a thing, something I’m very appreciative for, but they did it entirely unintentionally, I doubt any of my kind wants our children to die off for another’s child to take its place.

Niro said. He knew the humans were quite smart, look at all the stuff they left behind, he seriously doubted they wanted to all die though. He heard Element’s comforting comment to Marahute as he thought this, and looked at the bird, she still seemed ruffled, but her beak was now closed and she was just looking at Element just in case he changed his mind. The question Element asked didn’t sink in right away so it took him a little while to answer.

I don’t normally eat birds no. I enjoy them, although, my Marahute and Tobias, he’s a redtail hawk, will eat other birds. I don’t know any wolves that would.

Niro said, he doubted other wolves would eat birds, but eggs on the other hand seemed to be a specialty to some. He’d had eaten a few only because he’d nothing else to scavange when he was in the southern lands. Niro wouldn’t eat them because he enjoyed the birds, even numerous as they were. Element had an excellent point. Niro really did envy the birds sense of freedom, they could go wherever they wanted, some birds he knew swam and flew, it was amazing. He wondered who the birds envied if they could. He started chiding himself as he came back to, he tended to daydream and think excessively especially when it came to birds.

Do any other cats speak? I’ve seen one but he only possessed low speech and my friends they have a cat themselves. I don’t think that one speaks either, well high speech anyway. Do you know low speech as well?

Niro knew that wolves could speak low speech, but he wasn’t one of them and he honestly didn’t want to try it either. He enjoyed what he could speak now. He was curious if the cat knew how to speak the two languages.

They may have done such a thing, something I’m very appreciative for, but they did it entirely unintentionally, I doubt any of my kind wants our children to die off for another’s child to take its place.

That was true enough. Even if the humans did invent incredible things that could take the place of labor and work, could live in comfort while trying to discover, could write and read and create, they did still die - even if the Luperci were very much like them, what would be the point of rising again if they would just die out and have to start all over again? Would they ever reach the pinnacle of their discoveries, would they ever become as great as they were - or even greater? What if it was just one enormous cycle of the rise and fall of various species, each fulfilling the achievements of the other before dying out and being replaced?

Element's mind swirled with such thoughts and Niro's words were lost in the fray. Suddenly, however, everything was forgotten when he heard a rustle from the forest. Swiveling his ears towards the sound, Element stayed stock-still and waited. What was it?

"Grrrwl."

Element froze as he heard the low, threatening growl from the forest. Now, all words that Niro spoke were lost in his frozen, almost paralyzed state. He took a deep breath from his mouth and scented the scent from the top of his tongue - bear.

As if to acknowledge that thought, an enormous, lumbering grizzly bear stepped out from the trees and looked at Niro and Element with its beady eyes. Element stayed completely still, not knowing what to do in this case - the bear was too large for Niro and himself to take on, but if they ran, the bear would chase them. A bear could outrun, outclimb and outswim anything - the only hope Element saw was to...was to what?

"Niro," Element whispered - he wasn't sure if the wolf saw the grizzly yet, but it was just as well to make him notice. The bear didn't seem to hear Element's whisper.

WC: --- OOC: lol oh no bearz!!!!

Niro could tell that something had changed in the whole atmosphere, and when he looked at Element he couldn’t help but let fear drive him to look at what the cat was staring at. There, a grizzley stood. Niro’s heart leapt to his mouth. He’d never been so close to a bear, and this thing was… well… massive. He looked around to figure out what to do. He wasn’t in his lupis form so he couldn’t even think of out running the creature. He knew that Element was small enough to fit into small crevices, if there were any, what had his mother taught him about the bears in the southernlands? Never look them in the eye… he diverted his eyes to Element, never run. Well he was too scared for that… walk away. But what would walking do? It would see him? He had to trust his mother’s judgment.

Move slowly away, don’t run.

He said in a quavering voice. He backed away, he had to make sure that Element would get out clean before he made his own departure. He would never leave anyone behind that didn’t deserve a cruel death for no reason.

Sorry for the wait. :<

"Move slowly away, don’t run."

Element looked at the bear once more; Niro's words registered in his mind in an eerily calm way, almost as if the presence of an immense danger had slowed time and calmed the cat. The bear's enormous head swung from left to right, its large black nose snuffling. Suddenly, its tiny eyes spotted the cat and his new canine companion, and it seemed to freeze, realizing that there were things in front of it. It didn't move forward, but it also didn't show any signs of backing down, either.

Element had never met a bear this close before; he'd seen them on mountains and from a great distance, but he never thought much of them until now. He didn't know their personality, which made it hard to know how to act; Niro's words should have been enough, but the dog himself wasn't moving. Wrong; immediately after the cat thought that, Niro backed up just an inch. The bear's muzzle swung towards his direction, its eyes narrowing. Element let out a low hiss and backed up slowly; the Ursa's head pointed towards him, now. It didn't make a move, didn't seem angry - just looked at Element with those eerie eyes. Element backed up more, and he was almost into the bushes at this point - the bear was following his gaze with an eerie focus. Niro had to move away now, while the bear's attention was directed towards the cat. Then, they could both get away cleanly.

WC: --- OOC: if you want we can end this with your post ^^ Niro will just head back once Element is outta danger. Big Grin WotD: Kith

He moved as the cat moved, then watched him as he was almost into the brush, hopefully the cat would run when he was under it. That left Niro. He moved back himself, his long legs would be no match for the huge bears loping gait. He hoped that this experience wouldn’t destroy the kith between the two. He’d have to live through the day to think about that, so he kept moving further and further, keeping his eyes on the bear, who was now starting at Element. Niro was no far enough away to feel the danger wouldn’t be so much, and hoped beyond all hope that the cat would just disappear in the brush. He couldn’t yell though because that would cause the bear to start running through. He had been told by his mother it was best to stay quiet. He watched the bush hoping this would be a fairly scary encounter but nothing more than that. ‘please please please.’ He could feel the fear in Marahute, who was stock still the second the bear came into view. She may have been a great predator, but she knew when there was one greater in view and would possibl attack if provoked, and she seemed to feel from the wolf and the cat it was not a good idea to provoke.

Goodness...sorry for the wait!

Element backed away from the bear, seeing as it sat its rump down on the grass only about five feet away from him and stared. He cast a fleeting glance to Niro - him and his beautiful bird were waiting, tentatively. Waiting for Element to run away. He knew that Niro would be able to escape the bear - all that was left was for Element himself to escape safely.

He glanced back behind him - trees and bushes would conceal him nicely. He took a single step back - the bear simply looked on, curious. Element wasn't fooled by its childish demeanor - when angered, Grizzly Bears could be deadly foes. He took another step back. Then another. And another. And before long, the bear was out of sight and all Element could see was green. Niro would escape - he was fast enough, and Element had lured the bear away enough. And if he didn't, Element would hear the fight and perhaps go for help. He began walking away - his ears acute. But he knew Niro would get away. The day had ended on a dangerous note.
