Dated to September 7. 300+

That morning Nayati had stopped by Liliana's hut to find her not there and her scent somewhat faded from the place. He hadn't seen hide nor hair of her since the Summer ceremony. Not in the stables or in the town or anywhere else. He hadn't even seen her mare, Grace, recently. The male had just assumed that she was busy, not the overly worrying sort, but now he was becoming a little concerned. She had seemed fine at the ceremony. A little nervous, but that wasn't anything out of the ordinary for the somewhat shy woman. The Utina left her hut and walked around the village for a bit, but that turned up nothing either. He returned to his hut, head hung low. I hope she is alright, he thought. There weren't many here that he considered true friends, but the mixed female was one of them and he didn't like that he could not find her.

The man ducked into his own hut and then exited with his quiver and bow in hand. He needed to go do something to burn off this nervous energy and distract his mind from worrying about Liliana and the best remedy was to go hunting. The Enagayahe Kanati walked swiftly to the stables and took Iye from his stall. Unlike usual, nothing was said to the dapple grey stallion. Nayati had become completely focused and blocked out all other thoughts. He effortlessly mounted the horse and they rode off quickly into the woods of the territory. The Utina would start hunting in the AniWayan lands, but if he could find nothing within the fenced borders then he would move on past them. In times like these, he refused to go home from a hunt empty handed. Iye could sense his companions drive and focus and similarly steeled his own mind, ears forward and alert and waiting for any signal that they should slow or quiet their pursuit.

The events that had happened in the last four days seemed like a dream, but she wasn’t going to admit that to herself as she’d be half scared by being poked… well it was just a nervous feeling, she did think about if one did touch her if she would feel it but that was only a short question and she reassured herself she’d more than likely would because the animal seemed to be knowing exactly what she was thinking. Liliana grinned when she saw the fenced border of her home and signaled the horse to jump at the perfect moment, and she did, clearing the fence easily. Weights seemed to have been lifted off of her as she came into the territory, to think only a few days ago she thought she hadn’t belonged, that she was not worthy to be in AniWaya or to have a spirit guide. Now here she was trotting along the borders for the first time with her own spirit guide! The trouble was, she wasn’t sure why a porcupine would pick her, one of the unprickliest of wolves. She didn’t think to ask the spirits on something so petty, at least this creature had kept her life exciting for the few days he was with her. She moved through the forest, the ever familiar forest when she saw something white float through the trees. It looked familiar. She stopped Grace for a second, and could see it again, disappear between more trees.

She made Grace to follow the white streak, if she knew who it was and she had little doubt, he would be the first to know about her spirit guide! She trotted through the forest, not making Grace go faster than she ought to. But hoping it was still fast enough to catch up to his own horse. she could see the outline of his fur and there were feathers streaking behind him as he rode, she knew who it was. With an excited bark, she called out.

Nayati!

She could tell he was concentrating, but on what she wasn’t sure, the game around here tended to stick near a few clearings, it looked as though he was heading to one, but they weren’t there yet so he wasn’t chasing anything, then her heart sank… at least she hoped he wasn’t chasing anything.

Yay! Big Grin 300+

Going on a hunt was the one thing that could clear his mind of anything else. It wouldn't last forever, but right now he needed the distraction. Being so far away from all of his family and the people he loved was difficult, and so the few attachments he had here were made all the more important in his life. He had come here, following after Asha, but he had barely seen her since his arrival. He could still pick up her scent in the lands from time to time, but never did he catch sight of her fiery hair and bright smile. Nayati wondered if she was avoiding him for some reason. He and the Amara girl had never had issues before though, and he couldn't imagine why they would now. Unless she had guessed at his true feelings for her, but he had been so careful to keep that a secret. Now that Liliana was missing too, he was feeling the void in his relationships deepen.

All his senses worked overtime, searching for even the smallest sign of game in the area. He wasn't quite to where he was headed yet, but he hoped to be able to pick up even a small trail to tell him where deer or anything else might be located. Plus, he couldn't be quite so quiet when he was hunting with Iye, and he needed plenty of time to make sure they made their approach as carefully as they could. Everything about both of their figures spoke of intensity and he was so trained on his purpose that he didn't hear the sound of other hooves near him for they were not the hooves of prey.

At the sound of the bark though, and his own name, his eyes grew wide and his head swung around. He tugged on Iye's mane to halt the stallion. His whole torso twisted around until he had his other hand resting on the dapple grey's rump and he finally caught sight of her. A heavy sigh was pushed out of his lungs. She looked well, and happy too. "Hello Liliana," he said, a soft smile coming to his strong features. It was a startling relief to see her.

Liliana saw him stop the horse suddenly and turn to her and was that relief in his eyes? She couldn’t tell she was just glad she hadn’t caught him in something important well crucial important. She stopped Grace only a short distance from Nayati. She was smiling widely.

I don’t know how it happened ,but but… my spirit guide had actually come to me!

She said, she almost told him of her abandoning the pack, but she couldn’t bring herself to it. Maybe someday she’d say something, but it wasn’t important right now. What was important was the spirit guide who’d actually shown himself to HER of all the wolves in the world! Why she got the one she did she had no idea, maybe it would come to her in the future but it would seem that it was a secret for now.

I just can’t believe it! I mean I thought I’d never get one, but I did!

She said, how excited she was didn’t matter, but the sparkle in her eyes, the relief that seemed to flow through her body, all of it showed in her actions, movements, and for one she was happy that she got to tell Nayati first! Then she saw that he’d been in the middle of something and she wondered maybe if she could help. She looked up at Nayati

What is it you’re doing, would you like some help?

It was the least she could offer since he’d helped her so often. Whatever he was doing though it was either hunting, which is what she guessed he was doing or he was heading somewhere to be alone, which she knew she could easily do as well by keeping out of his way, but she needed the company of another now… now that she’d been away from any wolves for the last four days.

Grace and Liliana caught up to Iye and himself after he had stopped their forward movement. The smile on her face was larger than any he had ever seen on her, and he wondered what it was that had made her so joyful. The man didn't have to wait long to find out though, as the answer was quickly blurted from her lips. If possible his own eyes grew even wider and his smile went from tentative to jubilant. "Liliana! That is wonderful news! Congratulations!" It meant that her place as an AniWayan was completely cemented now. A Spirit had chosen to help guide her through her life and be her constant companion. This must have been where she had disappeared to. She had gone on her Journey and had now returned since it had been completed. The man couldn't help but chuckle at her next words. "Of course you would find your Guide, you are a member of the tribe!" Her belonging here he had never questioned. Easily though he could understand the pure happiness that filled her up now. He had felt much the same when he had found Onawa. "I am glad that you have returned, safe and sound."

So relieved Nayati had been to see her that he had nearly forgotten what he was actually doing out here. Her questioning of his purpose though quickly brought that goal back to his mind. "Oh, I was going out for a hunt. Some help would be wonderful, if you would like to come. Maybe if you see how Iye and I work it will make training the new horses easier?" It would be hard to tell from just one experience horse and rider duo what more could do in concert with one another, but he could give her some directions as to what she and Grace could do to help the process, even if he would be doing most of the actual hunting. Who knows, by going through with the experience maybe she would gain her own ideas that he had not thought of.

Her happiness rubbed off on him right away as she told him her news. She wanted to jump around, but that for one wasn’t proper and another she was sitting atop a horse so it would have been inconsiderate to the poor chestnut. She did have to try to calm herself as he explained there was no doubts that she’d get it, that she really was a member of the pack. It just hit her in the face, not in a bad way, but it stunned her to think he wasn’t shunning her as she thought he would. For not having her guide. As far as she knew that was the main part of being the pack member. Then he explained why he was out here, and she got almost as excited again, to see how he trained Iye would be wonderful. She had not trained Grace in hunting, just riding, and broke her of the fear she had of all wolves. She did plan on turning her into a fierce horse in case trouble did come by. She knew that anything could happen and she didn’t want her horse to balk at the actions of some. But to be able to help with a hunt and watch how he did it was perfect. She’d be able to tell the difference between how the great tribe did it and how her mother trained the horses to do it.

That would be great! I will follow your lead though. Grace is not well trained in the hunting of animals.

She admitted to her snowy friend. She knew he should know just in case it would be more of a hindrance, but she knew how to control Grace well enough that she didn’t have to worry about her ruining his hunt, well it would be their hunt for now.

He had never once thought of Liliana as a lesser member of the tribe for the simple fact that she had not found her Spirit Guide yet. While not incredibly common, sometimes it took tribemembers years to find their Guide. She certainly wasn't the first person to not find theirs until well into their adulthood. Not to mention she hadn't even joined AniWaya until she was an adult. She had to get used to the tribe first, before she would go on her Spiritual Journey to find her Guide. Nayati had known that she would find it at some point, he had never questioned that at all. It seemed that she had though. Hopefully, now that she had found that fulfillment, she would be even more comfortable in her life here.

The prospect of going with him and Iye on the hunt excited her all over again and he was glad that she wanted to accompany him. The Utina male always liked to show others the ways of his people, and especially so to those who were already indoctrinated into the tribe proper. He felt that the more Liliana knew and was involved in AniWaya, the more and more she would feel that sense of belonging. Nayati had no desire to exclude her from anything at all. "I imagine Grace will do well. The temperament of the horse is most important in these cases. Hunting horses cannot be spooked easily, and must respond to commands quickly. They also have to keep from getting sucked into the herd mentality of the deer and elk." Maneuverability was important as well, but not as important as the other aspects. If a horse got scared it could throw its rider and lead to a deadly consequence, and if it started mindlessly stampeding with the other animals that was just as dangerous. Iye was calm, and able to fill every one of the necessary criteria. He felt Grace was calm enough to handle the venture as well.

"Let us be off then. I will signal to you when I can smell some prey." Heels nudged the stallion once again into a trot through the woods, nearing the place that they would likely find some deer.

Liliana nodded, as he explained to her what she’d actually been taught but she wasn’t one to just go and blurt out that she already knew. Because what would be the fun if he decided to skip something she didn’t know thinking she did? She was happy listening to him, a warmth flooded inside her as she listened to his every word. She rarely hunted, but that wasn’t going to stop her if she was included!

I’m quite confident that Grace will easily fall into those categories.

She said, but she probably didn’t have to it was for all of their sake. They had to trust their mounts as well as themselves in something like this. She knew exactly how dangerous it was. She’d seen her mother do a hunting scenario with a few of her newly trained horses, sometimes she hunted for real food other times it was just a mock hunt to see how well the horse did. Liliana only saw a few, the rest she knew was a success or a failure when she saw her mother coming back and the face she wore. Liliana’s heart ached, missing her, but it wasn’t as much as she’d missed her father. That was not what should be on her mind right now.

She fell in behind Nayati ears perked, eyes wide and let the man lead. Watching his movements on his horse precisely. She could see he did as she did, went bareback on the horse. she had found it a better feeling to feel the fur of the horse than the leather of a saddle. The only time she used one is if she was training a horse for another rider. She was to keep her attention on the hunt though now. She followed and waited for his signal being as quiet as she could, which in turn had Grace as quiet as she could as well.

Nayati knew that she probably already was well aware of everything that he was saying. Sometimes the man couldn't help himself though. So much of his life had been devoted to the art of hunting and becoming the best hunter that he could be that at times he couldn't help but to expound upon things, even if the other already knew them. Liliana would forgive him this fault of his character though, he felt. Someone else, like Aurèle, might get annoyed with such prattling but his friend would understand. She, too, could get over excited and wordy when it came to her own specialty of horse training. Plus, whereas his friendship with the Aston woman felt more professional, his friendship with the hybrid fey felt much more relaxed and open. He liked both of them, but he couldn't deny he felt closer emotionally to Liliana. There were no more words to say now though, and he simply nodded at her response. The man had no concern that either the horse or her rider would be a liability.

As before his friend had appeared, he went back into his hunting focus. All of his energy trained on finding some kind of trail or clue. After they moved a ways further, his nose finally picked up a scent trail. There was a herd of deer up ahead. Not a large herd, by the smell of them, but he only planned on bringing down one deer. Without more hunters it was difficult to manage more than a single one on your lonesome, even with bow and arrow on horseback. Nayati looked back and caught Liliana's gaze, his head motioning up ahead to indicate he had located their quarry. He reached back and took an arrow from the quiver, nocking it easily. A hand on Iye's neck told him to slow his pace a notch. In a very hushed voice he said to Liliana, "Stay close behind us." If she or Grace were more experienced he might have had them take the other side of the herd, but he wasn't going to take any chances today.

The Enagayahe Kanati clicked his tongue once and the dapple grey moved more quickly again. The deer came into view and caught sight of them, bugling in alarm and taking off. Without a command Iye surged forward and veered off to the side of herd while Nayati's skilled gaze searched for any straggling targets.

Liliana knew she couldn’t take part in the actual hunting part herself. She had no weapon to use which meant she was pretty much useless at that. But she knew how to skin an animal not to mention her horse could carry some of the load for Nayati. For now she was watching and learning. She already saw one big difference. Instead of archery her mother had used spears to take down animals. At his command she did what he said, she was close enough to see everything he did, but not too close that she would be hindering him in any way. She watched him run right at the heard, a not that her mother did pretty much the same, but while he seemed to be waiting for a target, her mother had tended to have one chosen, not to say that all wolves were like her mother, but the horse would know what was going on, and with each situation she could see the change in the horse’s movements as well as the way they moved from whatever training they got, it was like a signature of a trainer, and only an eye of one could see such subtleties. She stayed calm, trying not to get too excited or it would make Grace over giddy and start to actually try to run with the throng of deer that were running from them. She watched the herd as closely as she watched Nayati, and thought of which ones she’d pick out, but she didn’t know which one he would ultimately pick out. Archery was never something she had been taught, and it looked perfect for Nayati, but nothing Liliana would do. She could see he was so focused, and couldn’t help view how… manly he really looked. Liliana was transfixed both on the wolf and the arrow he had knocked waiting to be shot, wanting to know what he would pick.

Was kind of distracted writing this, I hope it doesn't suck >.> 300+

Some hunters chose their targets before startling the heard, but Nayati always waited to see which was best. At times he would chose one before, and others he liked to see the herd moving before he picked which individual animal to go after. Whenever possible, he wanted to chose an animal that was old, sick or injured. The Utina man believed in the balance and value of all life, even the lives on the animals they had to prey upon to survive. He didn't like taking young and healthy deer from the herds. Thankfully, as he saw this particular herd running away from them, he caught sight of a doe that was lagging behind and seemed to be having trouble breathing. Deciding quickly, he pulled back taut on the bowstring, his eyes locking on the laboring doe. The thundering of the many running hooves became dulled in his ears as he released the arrow and the string twanged past his air.

A pained cry came from the deer as the arrow buried itself in her flank and she stumbled. For a second he thought that the one arrow had been enough to bring her down, but she continued on bravely, limping badly. By this time though the rest of the herd had nearly left her completely behind and Nayati and Iye closed in on her closer. Swiftly he grabbed and nocked another arrow, took aim at the back of her head, and released once more. The arrow hit its mark easily and dropped the doe immediately. Iye slowed and turned back around to their kill. The pale man hopped down and went to the body carefully. Her sides didn't labor with breath anymore, and he was thankful that last arrow had done its job of ending her pain. His pale blue gaze then sought out Liliana, hoping to gauge her reaction to the affair.

WC:336 (2 Points) OOC:Hope you don’t mind him deciding his name. and Nayati can see and hear him too :3 (the word means arrow in a native language, there was no specified one.)

Lili watched as Nayati picked his target carefully and then let loose the arrow. It happened so quickly Lili couldn’t follow the arrow itself but she didn’t miss the hit it made and the distress on the deer that was the target. She kept her distance as she watched the hunter ride up and shoot the deer again. Liliana couldn’t help but awe in the use of a bow. Though she was not made to use one, she’d handled one, at least the bow itself. It must have taken so much practice to get that good, to aim and make sure it hit a target, and even more difficult, a moving target. She trotted Grace up when he jumped down. Her heart was still pounding from the excitement. She was hopping down when he looked at her, and she gave him a smiled as she made her way to the deer.

That was absolutely exhilarating. Maybe next time I can come with you and use a spear. My mother taught me that too, I’m not anywhere as good as she was.

She said looking down at the deer. She knew that with most of the pack’s actions there was a ceremony for the dead, but as she had yet to hunt within the pack lands she really never learned such a thing. The porcupine spirit guide then found itself standing next to the deer looking at the two arrows sticking out of the deer’s hide.

Ouray

He said finally, then looked to Nayati, silvery eyes staring at him. Did Nayati see him? Liliana wondered as she looked at her companion. She froze scared, what did Ouray mean? She looked over at Nayati hoping he’d at least heard what her spirit guide had said. She blinked wordlessly not sure what to do now, it wasn’t a bad thing he was there, but she was still wary of the creature that presented himself as her spirit guide. He was as spiny in talk as he was in form.

Psh, I don't mind at all! Big Grin 300+

Some adrenaline had leaked into his veins, as it did with every hunt. There were few times he felt more alive than he was out hunting. The concentration, the chase, the moment between when he released an arrow and when it hit, it all made his spirit soar in the most wonderful of ways. When Liliana rode up to him and the downed deer, he could see the same excitement plain on her features. "I am glad you enjoyed it," he said with a toothy smile. "Of course! I repaired all the hunting spears in the spring, so there are plenty for you to pick from." It made him feel good that she had enjoyed herself so much that she wanted to come again and participate more next time. He hadn't been sure if she would like it or not, since hunting could be a bit gruesome at times. Nayati did try to keep his kills short and painless as possible though.

The Utina man was about to kneel down to pull his arrows from the deer when he looked down and saw a porcupine by the kill, looking at it. Almost immediately he was able to tell it was a Spirit, having seen so many in his life that he was able to pick up on the subtle signs. Apparently this was Liliana's Guide, and when he looked up to him Nayati automatically bowed his head in respect. He shot a glance to Liliana and found her looking nervous and confused. "Arrow, is what he said." The pale wolf had a feeling that was the Spirit Guide's name, but he wasn't certain and so he made no such comment aloud. He felt honored that her Guide had decided to show himself to him when he had only so recently shown himself to her.

Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Onawa herself appeared and walked up to Nayati's side, looking curiously at the Spirit porcupine. Thick tail flicked back and forth for a moment or two before she too nodded in recognition of the other Guide.

Liliana was glad to hear that he would love to hunt with her again, although she did nothing to actually bring the beast down, but she knew there were other ways to help, but with the appearance of her Spirit guide her mind was off the kill for a second. Nayati translated the word and she looked at the porcupine confused, she hoped he didn’t want to know if that was an arrow… but then it clicked, looking down she asked,

Is that your name? Ouray?

The porcupine turned to Liliana and smiled a knowing smile at her.

It is now.

He said, confidently, then out of nowhere, came Nayati’s spirit guide, Ouray turned to the large feline, a smile creeped on his face and he bowed his head. A respect for the other spirit guide. Liliana didn’t know how rare it was for other spirit guides to interact, but it was still just amazing to watch.

Hello spirit sister,

He turned back to Liliana with an expectant look and she suddenly remembered what they were there for and what they were doing. She looked over at Nayati, wishing she had one of her own, but never really thought about it before.

Do you have a knife? I might as well make myself useful, or did you want to eat here and now?

She asked, she knew how to skin a deer, and had been taught by her father that it was to be done and the meat was easier if whatever they didn’t use was either left for other animals or buried. She’d even learned the bones could be used as tools, but she didn’t know how to make any tools from the bones, she wasn’t sure what Nayati was planning with the deer though, so it was up to him. She would follow his lead since it was really his hunt.

300+

Nayati was always willing to go on a hunt and never had any issue teaching those about hunting that didn't know. Liliana was a fast learner and he had no doubt that she could be of a great help in hunts. Considering there was only one other hunter in the pack aside from himself at the moment, all the help they could get would be god, especially with the winter moons fast approaching. Still, thoughts of hunting and food were eclipsed by the appearance of her Spirit Guide and the subsequent conversation that occurred. The thought that had come to him also came to his friend, and she asked her Guide if Ouray was his name. At the porcupine's response, Nayati could only smile at Liliana. While she seemed nervous and still unsure, he thought this all must be very exciting for her.

Ouray turned to look at Onawa as she appeared and they both recognized each other. "And hello to you, Spirit Brother," she replied back, a faint smile on her own maw. Then Ouray turned back to Liliana and she remembered the kill before even he did. Her words snapped him out of his own fascinated reverie and he looked back to the freshly killed doe. "Oh, I do have a knife yes. Though I was thinking we should take it back to the village and cure the meat for storage. I have heard that the winters here can be harsh, and I wish to have plenty of food stored up for then." They could keep enough to give themselves dinner this night, but the rest should go to the tribe he felt. "We can put together some branches so that we can take it back to the village." He had a bit of rope with him and that way they wouldn't have to put a strain on either Iye or Grace's backs.

She watched as the two spirit guides interacted, clearly interested that they seemed to be having a conversation in front of them and they, or at least she couldn’t even hear it. She was curious about what they were saying, but she didn’t want to get into their business and she and Nayati had some work to do if they wanted to get the deer back home. He spoke with the Nayati wisdom that Liliana always admired about him, and smiled widely, it would be nice to know there was something to start out with in the winter, and possibly a good idea to start working on the crops out in the fields, but she figured she could do that little by little later on, now the most important thing was, was to get this deer back home. He mentioned getting logs, well that wasn’t too hard, the whole forest was full of trees, it wouldn’t be too hard to find a log. They split up to look for a log each. She scanned the forest floor not sure exactly how big, she just knew it would have to hold the deer, but wondered how it was going to be carried? She didn’t have to go too far to find one herself, she suspected it wouldn’t be hard to find another, she looked over the log that had fallen rather recently, she doubted it had been dead for more than a few months, she picked it up and dragged to where the deer lay, she didn’t have to go on instructions for that, and she awaited his return with whatever he found. She looked towards the two spirit guides who seemed to be still calmly talking, still wondering what it was they were saying. But reminding herself, she was not a rude nosey wolf she turned her attention to the direction Nayati had gone when they split up.

It was interesting to see Onawa and Ouray conversing with each other. He remembered that she had liked talking to some of the other Guides back in the Great Tribe, but here there really wasn't many for her to talk to. He never saw Asha, and Dawali's Guide was not the conversational type, not even with other Spirits. He had a feeling that she was glad for the opportunity to speak with her own kind again. Knowing the two would appreciate some privacy, he and Liliana split up a little to collect some branches to create a kind of mat to place the deer on to carry it back to the village. He gathered up a good number of fallen branches and even snapped some of the springier, newer growths from some of the trees. He hadn't brought much rope, and needing something to bind them all together.

When he returned, arms full, Liliana was back as well with what she had found. A large log was laying by the deer and he gave her an appreciative smile; that would serve well for the backbone of the thing. He quickly went to work, lashing the branches together in a sort of mat and then attaching it to the larger log, which he tied his rope around. "There, that should serve well enough. Will you help me put the deer on it?" he asked as he moved over to the kill, grabbing its two front legs. Nayati knew that his friend wasn't incredibly strong, but he just needed a little assistance to move the doe.

ooc!

Things went well as Nayati carried a bundle of sticks and Lili helped as much as she could to make the contraption. In no time they were finished and ready to put the deer on it, Liliana hastened to grab the back legs of the doe. Liliana looked weak, and may act like it, but she was a rather strong hybrid. The strength she had was from all the training she did, even though it seemed light work, it was muscle building in its own way, not to mention keeping the herd of cattle together, and bringing them in at the end of the day. Liliana wouldn’t be surprised that come spring they would have calves from the grumpy bull and the few females she’d gotten from Phoenix Valley. She hoisted the deer up and they moved it onto the makeshift carrier, she wasn’t quite sure how it would work, but she knew that Nayati would know, and she trusted she would find out soon enough.

super duper short :x

Liliana obliged and grabbed the doe's back legs and together they lifted it up and placed it on the improvised carrier. Someday he wanted to make something that would make the process of carrying kills back to the village easier, but until he could figured that out these sorts of contraptions would have to do. Once they had the deer situation he took up the rope and placed it over his shoulder, taking the end of it in both hands. "Alright, let's head back to the village," he said with a satisfied smile. Next time he would remember to bring more rope so that Iye could pull the body, but today he hadn't brought enough so the task fell to him. Nayati didn't worry that he wasn't up to the task though; he could easily drag the doe back. Besides, he had good company to distract him from the burden.
