Kesho Maisha

It seemed like it had been centuries... Centuries since he had laid foot on these lands; since he had seen anyone he recognized, or even cared about-- and now he was returning. At least, he hoped that he was. Kesho had no idea if the place to which he was attempting to travel would even still be in existence when he arrived. The copper yote ached with anxiety. Anxious, he was, to know if there were any left of his old clan. Outwardly, he doubted it; if only to save his own sanity. It was a joke, him trying to preserve his sanity, which had been lost long ago. He sighed outwardly, continuously moving forward on his furred feet. Attempting to keep his thoughts collected, to stay away from the dark side of him which, when tempted, lead him into impulsion and chaotic mannerisms. Good for enemies, though, that.

Kesho gave an awkward smirk, if only to himself, and eyed the horizon. His breath condensed visibly in front of him, something which he had grown oddly accustomed to watching far too diligently in his solitude. It was time, he thought, to return to some sort of civilization. But would it be the same? He very much doubted it. The middle aged 'yote was-- perhaps wrongly-- worried that everything would be different, that he had made a mistake attempting to return to the land which he once called home.

Too late to turn back now, Kesho... either make a fool of yourself to a whole pack or continue to be your own fool. Either way, you lose, buddy., an inward voice snarled at him. Oh, fuck off. This is not your business. It was a constant battle with his other self, but for the most part-- at least, in recent years-- he'd become more able to control it. When he was younger, he gave in much more easily to this bullying, menacing part of himself. It took a lot of concentration in order to tune him out, however, and when he couldn't, for any substantial length of time... it generally ended badly. His altered self usually took control when the urge to shift overcame him too severely. It made him irrational and quite dangerous, to say the least. For now, though, this side of him was being kept in check. Only under intense circumstances, for the most part, did this actually occur.

The rusty lupine snapped back to reality, glancing around at his surroundings. His ember eyes burned in the sunlight of the new day. It was still morning, but now approaching midday as he trod along the vaguely familiar path. The terrain had changed somewhat since he last traveled upon it, but his nose recognized a strong scent in the air that he couldn't deny gave him hope. While the older canid couldn't be certain to whom it belonged, he knew it on some level. Probably the decaying entrails of some long-dead friend of yours..., purred the insidious voice inside of him. He ignored it blatantly, continuing on his trek down a human-made road, simply following the intoxicating scent which he secretly prayed would not be false. His thoughts swirled, remembering fondly his time in this territory. A deep pang of sadness hit somewhere far into his heart as he thought of Zarah, the only other being he'd every truly loved, and how she'd left this world without him being able to let her know how he felt. But, he thought, now was no time for pussy, wimpy, Kesho. Now, he needed to be strong. His features quickly became brazen and he padded on, panting slightly from the heat reflecting off of the blacktop. Now he veered off the road, preferring to trounce in the natural lands of the area. The grass, although quite nearly dead, felt good beneath his paws.

It would be hard for hiim to explain his great length of absence, in the case of anyone he once knew still being around. However, he had good reasons... or, at least he thought he did. Supposedly love caused blindness, and his blindness led him astray. Of course, he regretted completely leaving this place which he had adored so. He belonged here, and he hoped beyond hope that coyotes still ran amok in these lands, and that he could join them once more.

Kesho situated himself, simply, upon a large boulder overlooking a fair amount of territory. The bronzed coy sat, quite alert, observing his surroundings with great pride and nostalgia. He had missed these lands so, and wondered whether any of his old comrades were out there...if the entire pack was dead; or worse, usurped by wolves. If the latter were the case, he might soon be in a mess of trouble.

It had been years since the silver-shaded coyote had brought Kesho, Zarah, or any of the others, the original coyotes, to her mind. To Kaena, these creatures were dead already—some killed for certain years ago, and others simply lost to time, dying in some faraway place she had never heard of. Inferni had been around long enough to have changed meaning for the scarred woman; no longer did she think of them as living, but relics from another era entirely. These times echoed back prior to her children and the glory of her own family—certainly, though, the hybrid woman would not have to be pressed hard to have admitted that the loose, unruly band of canines that had founded Inferni was, indeed, her first family; had they not passed along to death or other walks of life, she would have considered them family still.

The scarred hybrid did not, at first, recognize the scent that drifted over the light breeze to her; it was the scent of a stranger. Perhaps it had been so long, she did not remember it—or, more correctly, having assumed the bearer of this canine to have passed on years ago, the Centurion did not immediately associate it with anyone. As she drew nearer, however, that strange tingle of familiarity tickled her, and she pressed on quicker, moving with more nimbleness than she had possessed for many months now. There was something refreshed within the silvery hybrid since Clover had introduced her to the medicinal properties of the strange drug. The silver-shaded hybrid hadn't been a stranger prior to Clover's introduction, but she had not realized such a substance could be used to alleviate her old-woman aches.

A single yellow-golden eye peered around once she had entered the area saturated in this canine's scent, and Kaena felt something like a ghost was watching her. Her sable ears half-mast, the ashen canine looked finally to the boulder, her face dropping all pretenses of indifference and confidence as she looked on the face greeting her there. Kesho? she demanded, clear disbelief in her tone.

Wheee~!

Kesho Maisha

He was quite content, relaxing on the slate in the cool breeze of mid fall, the sun's rays comforting him as he began to doze lightly while sitting. The scent of this place overwhelmed him, brought back nearly too many memories; some terribly hard memories, and others quite wonderful. His eyes were forced abruptly open, though, as a new, stronger smell wafted into his now flared nostrils. The male's heart leapt into his throat as he scanned the horizon fervently. Could it be...someone, anyone, familiar?, he thought desperately to himself. Trying to keep his thoughts collected, thoroughly attempting not to get himself too excited, he stood, making close circles in an attempt to bring into his vision whatever was now prowling nearby. To his nose, it smelled familiar, almost friendly, but to his brain he knew it could easily be a forlorn wolf or worse.

Suddenly a silhouette appeared in his line of sight, and he squinted into the midday sun in a feeble attempt to make out its form. The figure came closer, quite swiftly, and he was floored as the curves of the female coyote became clear to him. No way..., he thought. He backed up suddenly, several feet, and sat. He stared, without regard, at the lady approaching. Her scarred face and single golden eye could not be mistaken for any other; of this he was sure. Maybe it is her, but there's no way she'll want you back, you traitor! He shook his head vigorously, but quickly returned his thoughts and focus to the female canine now in front of him. 'Kesho?', he heard her say. His mind was racing as she spoke his name, all of his hopes now realized in a truly exciting moment which he had yearned for once again for years now.

"...Kaena?!" He stammered, unsure of what to say next. So many thoughts sped through him. "You're still here?! I can't believe it... I thought for sure you'd have--..." Here he paused, not wanting to seem untrusting or any less enthralled to see a familiar face. He leapt towards her excitedly, tail wagging uncontrollably. He wanted to touch her, hug her, but knew that was off limits for this female. "You have no idea how much I've missed this place. Missed you; everyone. Is anyone else... still around...?" The last bit he asked, choking on his words, knowing for sure the answer wouldn't be what he hoped.

The silver-shaded coyote did not think she would have seen this face again; it had been so long, Gabriel would not even remember Kesho. Perhaps they had lived with one another for a brief time, but the scarred woman did not think they would have clear memories of one another. She, too, had expected Kesho to have been in the grave—it had been many months since she had heard that phrase, the one which assumed she had been dead, but it had long ceased to irritate her. Even if the oft-repeated words still did bother her, she would not have cared in this instance—there was a strange joy, elation at a canine who would remember those old times and those old ways.

“I could say the same for you,” she responded, still hanging back—they were not so close they might have embraced one another, but as he came forward, neither did the scarred woman withdraw. Instead, she remained where she was, her own sable-tipped tail whisking back and forth a few times. The grin across her muzzle was evidence enough of her happiness of another returning. “There are old faces here... but I don't know that they're quite as old as we are,” the coyote said, frowning. “I was gone for a while, even—came back springtime, last year.” The coyote did not wish for Kesho to think she had been here the whole time, either; her own loyalty to Inferni had seemed to falter and die over a small, dark-furred puppy.

“It's so good to see you again, Kesho,” the coyote added, speaking more softly than she had before. There was something in old bones and old blood returning to Inferni and lending its strength—this was another founder of the clan, here, one of the original members who had gathered together on that beach. The silvery coyote could have yowled to the skies for all her excitement.

Kesho Maisha

Kesho could not manage to hold his emotionality inside in its entirety. His overjoy flooded his features and a huge grin spread across his face as he listened to Kaena speak. It wasn't only her words, but her voice and her presence which shook him down to his core. It was nearly unbelievable that the femme was still alive after all these years, that she had continued the work-- all temporary allegiance surrendering aside, for he had done the same but was here now, fully prepared to return and practice every law of the clan. He was anxious to rejoin the ranks and be encompassed by the protection and warmth of a family, battered and worn as it may now be. Who are you trying to kid, Kesho, thinking they'll all just accept you without question or worry? Don't be so naive, dog., the altered voice muttered. Kesho ignored it swiftly, his current elation nearly preventing negative emotion from entering him.

"I certainly don't blame you for thinking me dead..." He shifted his weight, feeling somewhat ashamed once again at his long disappearance. "I'd be truly honored to meet any and all of the clan's members, Kaena." He lowered himself to her in a faint bow, in clear earnest. Looking up at her with his fiery visage, he raised himself up, squaring off at her level once more. "I must say it's wonderful to see you again as well, m'Lady." He gave an honest, warm smile and glanced around with curiosity. "I hope you have a place for me here, still, after all this time..." He sat, looking quite intently at Kaena, with slight adoration -- not one of lust or passion, but one of kinship.
