While everyone was probably aware that she was a failure, it didn’t mean that she did not try. Sitting outside the caves, mother and son were seated outside against smooth rock, enjoying one of what was likely one of the last sunny days of autumn. The young Hydra turned to look at her growing son, smiling slightly as she felt that familiar warmth in her chest rise with maternal emotions. It was better this way, for both of them. Itachi’s eyes were definitely one of his most striking features, set in a face painted with various hues of sand, from brown to greys. The familiar colour splash on the top of his muzzle along with the saddle on his back spoke soundlessly of his Lykoi heritage. But those eyes were unlike any Lykoi’s, fiery ruby battling vibrant purple.

They did not really say much whenever they were together, but it struck her that he was a silent child, burdened with thought. Perhaps that was just as well. That had always been his mother’s weakness; she often acted before thinking and thus had stumbled into some unfortunate situations. ”She’ll be home soon,” the quiet voice of the child finally announced, turning to gaze at the copper hued woman with the maroon hued gaze. A pale smile drew a fine line on his face, but that was all. Halo nodded and shut her eyes as she turned her face back to allow the sun’s shy warmth to shower her. She had often wondered if she too should find a place to stay by the caverns so that she could be closer to her family, but the Mansion was perfect for her, and she wished to remain close to Silas.

The silver-shaded coyote was becoming acutely aware that her birthday was drawing nearer. Wintertime would be soon, and she would pass her eleventh year. The concepts of such things were vague even in her own head, but canines smarter than she had spoken on such subjects before, leaving the less-intelligent Centurion to deduct from their words her own age. Eleven years seemed a long time, and it meant her sons would be old men. Kerberos would already be eight, nine this year—this did not pass the scarred canine's notice. It was possible her eldest son was already dead, but it was possible still he could die of old age before her.

If pressed, the scarred hybrid could not have answered why she was capable of such longevity; certainly, she had not made it a particular venture of hers to preserve her own life early on. On the contrary, she had sought death several times over, and each time he had lingered just beyond her reach. Now, he was certainly the one laughing—with family and clan and reason to carry on, the silver-shaded coyote no longer desired death. Indeed, she feared it. There was little religion in Kaena anymore, but death was only frightening; either the spirits of those she had ripped to pieces waited for her, or an endless, blank unawareness awaited her.<./p>

This had put her in a contemplative, near-surly mood; rather than seek social entertainment or other comforts, she had meandered to the edge of the coyote territory, spending the day hidden up on the mountain. Her mind had been on Samael most of the day. There was not an ounce of remorse or regret within the silvery coyote, and she damn well knew there should have been. No one could know, and Kaena would not be the one to tell them. As the hybrid headed back to the caves, her intention to avoid the world came to a halt as she found granddaughter and great-grandson—the word was repeated with near reverence in her head—waiting near the caves.

“Halo, Itachi,” the coyote said, greeting both of them in a single breath as she zoomed in on the smaller of the pair, nuzzling his shoulders and neck with affection without a moment of hesitation. His startling violet eyes caught her attention; when she last saw them, they were still threaded with tendrils of blue, wavering on the cusp of a reddish-purple. For a short time, the silver-shaded coyote thought he might have ended up with red eyes.

The boy was correct, and soon the Centurion’s form arrived. Halo gave the Matriarch a small, reserved smile, but the boy’s appreciation for the silvery form leaped to the surface straight away. Was it a touch of jealousy stabbing through her just now? Ruby eyes microscopically narrowed at the two’s warm greeting, but she forced her gaze to travel away and tried to act untouched. She could not be surprised; the boy lived with his grandmother and their bonds were probably stronger than that between herself and the boy. It was a shame, but she made certain to keep her mouth shut to avoid complication.

Itachi leaned into the loving nuzzle with a content smirk on his wolfish face. His silvery tail moved enthusiastically back and forth as he settled closer to the silvery, one-eyed woman, happily oblivious of his mother’s silent jealousy. He did not know that this settlement was something out of the ordinary. He only knew of the world seen through his bicoloured orbs. As the only child in the clan, he did not know any better. Soon though, his gaze turned back to the copper woman that should have ruled his entire world had she managed the role as his mother. ”How’s it going with you two?” the Lykoi woman wondered quietly, smiling still despite feeling rather sad.

hey hey hey guess wut i'm dumbbbb

Though they had been living together the past few months, the silver-shaded coyote knew little about Itachi. There was no coldness in their relationship, however, and it was not due to a stoic demeanor that she did not know him as well as she had hoped. He was a quiet child, soft-spoken and uncannily intelligent, especially for his age. He was happy to please Kaena and leave it there; he did not require cajoling or even the harsh word other puppies sometimes needed. Itachi seemed to know his place, but for all the things the silver-shaded coyote saw glowing brightly within him, it was disturbing to not know him as well as she felt she should have. The hybrid had spent many of the formative weeks in youth with Itachi. Rather than chatter away as soon as he found his voice, Itachi seemed to immediately prefer to contribute to the conversation where appropriate and where he had a particular thought. He wasn't one to interrupt; rather, when adult spoke around him, he listened with rapt attention, absorbing their conversation long before Kaena thought he could have comprehended it. Surprising the old woman, who had raised more children than she could count at this point, Itachi seemed to understand everything.

The silvery coyote detached herself from the boy, gracefully withdrawing from his puppyish embraces. She moved to Halo and settled down next to her, with the smallest of the trio positioning himself between them, his head tilted backwards to peer at the adult faces above him. “I'm feeling better lately,” the coyote said. “Less ache in the morning. Yourself?” the coyote said, unaware that anything could be amiss with the cinnamon-shaded woman.

She was sorry to hear the same question return to her after Kaena had revealed her status. It did not quite answer Halo’s question how she had wanted it to be, but she could settle with that. The young Lykoi was wondering how their lives were, great-grandmother and great-grandson living under the same roof and sharing so much time together. Halo did not know why she felt so terrible about the boy living at Kaena’s place. Hadn’t it been her idea to offer her a home where someone was genuinely interested in taking care of the boy. Ruby looked to her sandy coloured son, wondering what he thought about all of this. The question had been served to him too, but he remained silent.

Red gaze rose to her grandmother instead after a moment or two. ”I’m fine, I think.” Yes, Halo was not certain how she had been lately. She was lonely, but there had been improvement in her life as well. The woman thought of the kind Russian hybrid living in the mansion, feeling her cheeks blush slightly under cream fur. Things seemed to slowly move forwards and she liked what she saw so far. Perhaps.. ”I try to keep busy and get back into shape,” She had not been well at the last stages of her pregnancy and the first months after, but the Hydra was quickly leaping back into her old self, at least physically. ”Does my son behave?” she wondered, attempting to bring a small smile to her lips. Despite the time given to get used to it, the word “son” still felt wrong on her tongue.

HI I AM A SIE I AM ALSO DUMB HOW ARE YOU

“You think?” the hybrid asked, gently. There was no sharpness in the question, not so much as a gentle nudge -- what Halo wished to share was entirely up to her, and Kaena would not shove and pull these things from her. The red-eyed woman was far beyond the age that she needed constant guardianship, but the scarred woman would have thrown herself into burning flames and far worse for Halo. “You look better, at least,” she said, smiling and offering the compliment to Halo's always lithe figure, and her mostly brightened face. She was not exactly as she had been before Itachi, but some of the dullness had left her eyes. “He is lovely. Maybe the easiest boy I've seen,” the coyote said, cracking a yellow-toothed grin in the direction of the eerie-eyed child. None of Kaena's children had been particularly difficult, but Itachi was not even close to a troublemaker.

The question was soft, and the Lykoi hybrid allowed smile to lit her face. Silas had in fact made her life considerably better, just by being a small part of it. It was a wonderful compliment to hear that she looked better, at least. Perhaps part of the depression has been from lack of physical activity. It had made her feel sick not to be doing her daily hours of workout in the backyard of the mansion.

A nod was given as her grandmother complimented her child’s behaviour as well. In fact, Itachi’s personality had never been a source of irritation. He had always been quiet—not really gotten into trouble. It was harder to say what he was like here, when his crappy mother was out of the image most of the time, but his good behaviour seemed to have continued. That was a very positive thing, for Halo did not like to think that she had burdened Kaena with this child. "You always were a good boy." The mother smiled at her son and was glad to see him smile back at her, though she was uncertain if joy would ever fully reach his eyes.

”I’ve tried to get out more,” the red eyed female continued hesitantly, wondering whether or not she would dare to speak of the blue eyed Russian male as long as her child was seated between the two adults. ”Tried to meet more of the clan and renew the few friendships I have.” they were few, in fact. Halo was not an individual easy to get along with, so those few she had were precious. Most of all Silas’.

I KNOW THAT THIS IS OUT OF THE TIMELINE FOR HER PROMOTION BUT IDGAF I WANNA MENTION IT IC LOLOL

There was no burden in Itachi or any other child -- the silver-shaded hybrid had been of that perspective before, and it had ended in Maeryn's death and Kerberos's hatred. She would not walk that road again; family was meant to be valued like the precious gems they were. Of course, the silver-shaded woman's love and value of family did not excuse traitorous actions, as she had proven before -- even the ever-loving Kaena had her greater limits, and even she had a line drawn in the sand which none of them could cross.

“He learns quickly,” the hybrid muttered. Itachi didn't need to hear things several times over for them to sink in -- he snapped up knowledge immediately, and he was not prone to forgetfulness. The single eye of the old woman moved to Halo as she spoke, a faint smile showing on her muzzle. “Good. It doesn't do you any good to sit by yourself and rot with just your thoughts,” the coyote said, speaking from experience. She wasn't always smart enough to take her own advice, of course, but that didn't mean she couldn't dispense it. “Good. Some of the new ones will need your help, I'm sure, Triiari,” she added. Though she gently jested, there was a genuine tone of pride in her voice for her granddaughter.

Ruby rested on her pale blonde son for a moment, wondering about her child’s mind. It struck her that Kaena knew so much more about this little person that she ever would. It seemed there was only blood connecting Halo with Itachi. It saddened her, but if she had been chained down with the custody of this child, her suffering would no doubt have been greater. Soft copper coloured ears flicked at her grandmother’s words, feeling guilt even though she had managed to push past the obstacles that had threatened her sanity. She had been well on her way rotting, but she had been saved. Blissful blush rose to her cheeks at the thoughts of a certain male.

The sound of her new title aloud forced a smile to inhabit her features. There was a ridiculous amount of pride within her. Halo had been directly under the leaders of the clan for a while, but to be the top warrior of her beloved clan was wonderful, simply put. Clearly she was doing things correctly, and she had already started to scout for possible warriors of her liking within the members of the clan. Halo had aimed high when she joined Inferni, and it was a wish come true to hold such a powerful rank within the coyote hierarchy.

”Thank you, Grandmother,” she breathed, reaching out with a hand to her childhood heroine. ”I don’t doubt that... though I’m not impressed with what I’ve seen so far.” Compared to Kaena, Halo did not believe so much in bonds of blood. Once, perhaps, but not any longer. There were many coyotes she could trash talk, but not with the Centurion.

The scarred woman did not doubt that Halo loved her son -- part of her, anyway. Some faint part of her even still loved Vitium, even after he had betrayed them and spoke out against their way of life. Part of her still loved Andre, despite what he had done to family itself. There were these conflicts always in her head, family versus clan and blood versus family. Some of them would grow to hurt their own, and there was nothing the old coyote could do about that. She had raised Vitium right -- she could have done better by Andre, of course, but she had done right by her older son, and still he had turned against her and Inferni both.

The silver-shaded hybrid smiled faintly at her granddaughter, her coal-shaded ears pricking forward. “There are a lot of new ones, and some of them are soft. You'll set them straight, mmm?” she said, her yellow-golden eye glittering. Despite all Halo had been through, here she was at the top of the clan -- against adversity and the world bearing down her back, the cinnamon-shaded woman had persevered and proven herself worthy of the title Triari. The newness of the ranks did nothing to lessen their importance, of course -- these were their council, the three most-trusted canines of the clan, and Halo was the first chosen for this. “I'm very proud of you, Halo,” she added, shaking her head in amazement. It seemed effortless, but Kaena knew better.

She had wished to believe the silver shaded Centurion; the words she had spoken, emphasising that a child was a gift no matter the way it was brought into the world. Things had been pushed on the copper coloured woman in the wrong order, however, and she knew that there was a major part of her that would always possess doubt and reluctance about this child. There was love as well, but it was not the fleeting, throbbing blush of emotion that pushed her over whenever she thought about a particular hue of blue. What existed for Itachi was a deep, instinctual, mandatory emotion, rock solid, but not as vivid and delicious as the other. Ruby turned to the little child and soft fingers followed as she brushed the top of his skull, her fingers gliding along the smooth, golden fur of his. It was just that every time she saw her son, she was only reminded of what had happened to her, and it was hard to bear.

Large audits twitched as she spoke. The Lykoi princess resisted a fleeting urge to shrug at those words. She could always consider setting them straight, but the dirty truth was that she could not stand some of the individuals she had most recently met. Halo did not even know that Sepirah had been a warrior in training, because it had never been revealed at the scene where the Triarii had ended up spitting at the dark woman’s face. Her half-sibling seemed to be only half sane, unable to distinguish wolves and coyotes from another. Absolutely every goddamn thing the Samael child had said had annoyed the warrior, and there simply was not enough patience in her to deal with such an arrogant brat. ”They lack respect for the hierarchy; for what we do,” the auburn woman muttered, reluctant to add a title and face to the discussion by fetching the dark woman’s stupid name.

It was true though. The girl had failed to treat a superior with respect from the moment they met, and the ruby eyed fighter had a hard time to accept open obedience, especially when heavily seasoned with bold ignorance. It meant that she was unable to appreciate the choices that her leaders did, and Halo had issues with those who had issues with the clan’s leader, no matter how vague. A smile dribbled onto her lips at the last words from her leader and mother. It warmed, and it made her proud to know that the legendary woman thought so highly of her. It was what she had wished all her life. There had been gruesome obstacles placed in her path to glory, but she could taste the gold on her tongue now. The princess was no longer a nobody without ties, and she had barely begun. ”I only wish to serve,” she replied, duty as much a part of her as anything.

The silver-shaded coyote could understand where Halo was coming from. Her first children had been very much wanted at first, and in the last three days of her pregnancy, the scarred woman contemplated shifting and ending it all. She did not know whether it would kill the children, though she had been told it would kill her. They were not wanted when they were born, either -- she looked at Maeryn and saw herself, she looked at Kerberos and saw only Zulifer. It hurt to look at them, and in the end the coyote found she could not. It had ended Maeryn's life and turned Kerberos against her, and now he was an old man somewhere or dead.

“Maybe not, but they are young. Can't all be like Itachi,” the Centurion said, smiling as she referenced her descendant, still perched there attentively. The coyote reached over to touch the Lykoi-branded canine's arm, squeezing it gently. “I know, and you do a damn good job of it,” she responded, speaking the truth. She would have said such a thing as a grandmother or not -- should every canine that joined their ranks possess half the dedication and loyalty of Halo, they would be in very good condition.
