Promises, Promises

Backdated October 23rd!

Skye stood in front of a large patch of dirt. This was one of the rare places in the Cercatori d'Arte territory that was clear of any trees - it spanned for maybe 200 yards in either direction before the trees began again. Directly behind it, the trees were particularly thick - how...mysterious. But Skye wasn't interested in that right now. She was interested in the patch of dirt that indicated the hopes of a new garden.

She took out the berry that Pixie had given to her so long ago, that day that Cercatori d'Arte was made - it was old, shriveled, but still red and juicy. She took out her handy knife and dug a small hole in the dirt. She covered the seed with the dirt inside the hole and smiled at it, sure it'd grow into a large bush with the delicious berries soon enough. She stood, wiping her hands on her pants. She knew winter was coming, but her mother had told her about that - just gently put water on the plant's leaves before frost hits, and when it freezes, the heat from the water will go into the plant and preserve its life.

Staring off into space, she looked back at the strange density of trees. She couldn't see anything past it - although she knew that if she pushed past it and kept going and going, she'd eventually reach the beach that ended their territory. But now? No, she didn't know what was behind there. She just knew that she'd started a new garden for her pack - and promised to water it and feed it as much as she could.

He had been moving about finding a good spot to soon call his own home. It wasn’t here though, he wanted to be in with the trees, he wasn’t looking at the moment, he was just taking a break from doing such a search. The carver moved silently today, his music didn’t pierce the quiet of the cold day. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to, he felt that it was a perfect day just to listen to the music of nature, the wind in the trees, and he could even hear the tides of the ocean. The chirping of birds, and the last of the geese heading south were also honking high up in the sky. He then spotted the familiar form of Skye and smiled, walking over to her.

Hello Skye, what are you up to?

He asked curiously, she’d been looking at the sky, there was nothing wrong with that but he felt there was something deeper than just that, and he was curious, he wanted to get to know his packmates more, especially the one who’d helped him with the idea so vigerously.

"Hello Skye, what are you up to?"

Skye snapped out of her daze to turn around and see Shawchert standing there. She gave him a smile and motioned below her to where she'd planted the berry. "I just planted a berry my friend gave me," she said. "I can't wait until it grows into a bush - they're quite delicious, those berries." She licked her lips and grinned, remembering the juicy sweetness of the plump red berries that Pixie Frost had given her. She looked from Shawchert to the ground to the strange wall of trees behind the patch of dirt.

"Hey, Shaw?" she asked, curiousity now overwhelming her. "Doesn't it seem strange how those trees are denser and almost in a line than any of the others?" It was true - the Ethereal Eclipse was a very dense region, but those trees were tightly packed like nothing Skye had ever seen before. And they were eerily straight next to each other, like someone had deliberately planted them in a line. But no one was here, were they? No one was here to plant trees, were they?

Curiosity driving her forward, she gingerly stepped over her planted seed and crossed the patch of dirt so she was peering through the trees. She could barely see through it, but she thought she saw muted shades of gray and brown in rectangular shapes - what was this? What was behind that barrier?

A berry bush? This interested him very much, they tasted good? He’d remembered something his mother had taught him, feed a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime, and for some reason this reminded him of it. He smiled at the thought, perhaps it was because if she’d eaten that berry that would be the only one she had, but instead she planted it, and soon in a while there would be plenty of those berries to eat.

What a great idea, I cannot wait until it does grow, I’d love a taste of the berries.

He said looking at the spot where she’d planted the berry, he knew little of plants and herbs and they didn’t interest him unless harvestable and edible right away, so he never knew about what times to plant them. He was so preoccupied looking at the moved soil that he wasn’t paying as much attention to Skye as he should have, but when she spoke he lifted his head to where she was looking at, it was a strange thought, he did wonder himself.

We are going to have to check it out then,

He said looking at her. An adventure, though he was no where near a pup, he felt that such a thing was just as good for adults. He looked back at the spot she’s planted the bush and back to her.

You want to mark where you planted it? Or will it grow on its own?

He asked, hoping he wasn’t really being rude, he just thought some plants did need help, and to plant something without a landmark was like ftrying to find a needle in a haystack. Then again, he was no expert on such things as he’d lived his life alone until now.

Skye smiled when he said he'd want to taste the berries. She couldn't wait until he tasted them, either; they were delicious, and she wanted to show them off to her friends. And when Pixie came, Skye would show her the bush, too, and she'd give her some. She planned on planting a lot more of the berries where that had come from; when that one bush grew into a full grown bush with plenty of berries, she'd take the berries and plant them all around that area as well as some other edible plant's seeds. It'd be like a garden, a garden so her new pack could survive through the winter.

"Oh," Skye said in response to his questioning of whether or not she should mark it, "I did mark it, sort of - I put a mound of dirt over the seed so it's easy to see. And it's in the very corner of the patch of dirt, so I'll remember. Great suggestion, though!" She would mark it properly, but later...she really wanted to see what was behind this wall of trees.

She found a tiny gap between the trees, big enough for her slim figure to slip through, but not quite so small as for the larger and buffer Shawchert to go through...looking at the predicament, she took a branch and snapped it so that it was out of the way. Now Shaw could go through if he sucked his stomach in a bit. She giggled at the idea and slipped through the crack.

What was on the other side astounded her.

It was a town. A town in her little pack's territory. There was a single, wide street that ran between rows and rows of wooden and stone houses alike. They were covered in foliage, the houses, so that you could maybe see a window here and here, but otherwise it was covered completely in green. She saw that the house nearest to the garden was stone; but she could barely see the cracked rocks from inside the leafy barrier.

"Shaw, Shaw, you have to see this!" This was wonderful! It would mean that winter would be a little less hard on Cercatori d'Arte than it normally would, and that Skye would finally - finally! - have shelter. She'd hated lying down on cold earth night after night. Oh, a warm bed! "A bed!" she exclaimed, an enormous grin on her face.

Shawchert followed Skye silently, and could tell the area was thickly covered in trees vines and all sorts of brush, though Skye easily disappeared through them. He hurried to follow her, though he had a much harder time, he heard her gasp and he tried ot hurry but at the sound of her voice, his heart relaxed though he was still sucking in his breath to fit his large form. She’d said he had to see this… then she spoke… a bed? He needed to see a bed?

You see a bed? That’s it?

He sounded disappointed, but as he made his way through the tangle he found that she’d not meant a bed alone… more like a good number of beds, he saw the town of his own eyes and was instantly interested. There were houses dotting the overgrown street, though it was so hard to tell from the overgrowth that was around it, he whistled instantly impressed, though he doubted he, himself could live in a house like these, he knew it would offer shelter for those who were much smaller than he was. He looked at Skye and smiled.

Well our denning problems have just been solved!

It looked as though this village had not been touch… nt since the humans had died, so whatever was around was likely to be a lot, and it probably wasn’t all good either, he’d remembered the road full of old corpses, he would be ready for them, but it seemed that Skye was only thinking about the bed she would finally be able to sleep in. he doubted many of the beds in this place were usable, as over time, the roofs in the houses would have collapsed and water would have leaked through though that was repairable enough, then there would be some more damaged than others, he kept his hopes high but still understood the power of the elements.

yay! there's a skeleton in the bedroom, which is where the hallway to the left leads. xD

"No!" she said, laughing at the idea of being so excited over finding just a bed. No, not just a bed - a whole town full of them! A whole town full of houses for the pack to live in! She laughed and grinned at Shaw's statement; yes, the denning problem was totally fixed! She hoped more Luperci decided to take some of the houses so she'd be able to live with lots of people instead of just herself. She was glad that her house was near the garden, though.

"Let's explore!" she exclaimed, not aware that she may be going too fast and being too excited for Shaw. She raced to the house nearest to the garden, the stone one, and ripped vines off the front door. It was slightly ajar, and she swung the door open and entered the dark house.

It opened into a kitchen. There was a window behind the sink, and several cabinets lining the walls. Intrigued, she looked around; to her left was a hallway that curved right so she couldn't see what was beyond it, and to her right was a short hallway that led to the living room. She went right.

In the living room was a fireplace - it was old, though, and vines grew all over it. She would be able to fix it up as well as the couch, which was completely dilapidated and ruined. It looked moldy, old, and damp, and had a great number of holes in it. She didn't dare sit for fear of collapsing onto the floor.

OOC: Fail post

Shawchert had finally made it through the thick brush and had to catch up to Skye who entered a house, he hurried after her, and had to bend a little as he moved inside, it wasn’t as destroyed as he thought it would be, though it was definitely a fixer upper, something he’d surely help Skye with. He moved behind her into the kitchen, then left her as he decided to explore the rest of the house. There was a room that looked like the humans washed in but he couldn’t tell what all the old contraptions had been. He passed that room, then found another and tried the door. He opened the door and peeked in. As he’d suspected there was more evidence that humans had occupied the area than them leaving what they had all over, but here was proof there’d been humans by the skeleton. Shawchert closed his mouth tightly. He knew that Skye would want to explore in here, but he was sure she wouldn’t be willing to see the white thing laying in the bed, he frowned trying to find the words to tell her it wasn’t a good idea to go in there.

Seeing enough of the living room, she decided to go the other way, where Shawchert was. She opened the door to one of the rooms and saw that it seemed like some sort of water room; at least, that was what was all over the floor. There was a rounded seat as well that was filled with water; it smelled bad, however, so she shut the door and moved on.

Around the corner was where Shawchert was. She turned the corner and gasped. This was the bedroom; there was a small table to the side of the bed with a broken lamp on it, and there was a window with a flowerbox outside to the left of the room. But that wasn't what made her gasp. What made her gasp was the long, white thing lying on the bed, its appendages splayed out as if it were lying, sick, at its deathbed.

A human skeleton.

Without meaning to, Skye shrieked, and took a step backwards. Of course someone had to have lived in this house before she claimed it as her own; but it was still a gruesome sight that she didn't really want to see. She averted her eyes to the floor on the right beside the bed and something new caught her eye. It was a small, dusty book; it seemed dirty and grimy, but it was also intact. Careful to avoid the skeleton, she picked it up and quickly backed away again. She didn't want to touch the skeleton.

Looking at the cover, she found it was caked in dust and grime. With her hand, she wiped away most of it and saw that there was a title engraved on the front. It read:

Journal

Almost afraid to open it and read this poor man's dying words, she turned to Shaw. "I guess...humans really did live here," she said weakly.

Shawchert, stood there staring at the thing, and the only thing that put Shawchert out of his trance was the Shriek that Skye let out. He put his hand on her shoulder, but it seemed to make her much more brave than he was, as she moved closer to the human. And picked up something. She hurried back and dusted it off. It was from the human. A personal item… well this whole house was probably the human’s personal item and whatever was in it belonged to them. But Shawchert believed that the dead didn’t own anything in the living world. He moved slowly to the bed, and took the blankets that were under the skeleton and wrapped it up, so that neither he nor Skye could see.

I’m afraid so, I’ll make a proper burial ground and make sure there’s no more in the other houses.

Shawchert said, looking at the bump inside the blanket, wondering how bad it had hurt the human to die the way he or she did. He knew there’d been a virus, something that had killed the humans and yet let wolves transform. He didn’t know if it was one of those things that killed slowly… like cancer, or quick and painless. It made him wonder. It made him think, and worst of all it scared him.

ooc: Meep, sorry for the delay, Shaw!

Skye felt terrible. Guilt threatened to eat her inside out until she remembered that it wasn't her fault that the humans died - she was just a product of that, along with other Luperci. A phoenix rising from the ashes, as someone in one of her books may say. Still, she didn't like the thought that the humans had all died out. It was eerie - strange. Made her feel like an alien in a world she thought she knew, but didn't. Who knew what these humans thought and did?

And yet...

She looked down at the journal in her hands. She flipped it open to the first page, dated over twenty years ago. She read it aloud:

"'The crops are growing exceptionally well. The mayor of the town wants everyone to chip in, so little Jack decided to plant some seeds he found in the garden. He's growing up fast; I can't wait to see the day he becomes a man.'" The rest of the entry went on like this. "This entry must have been from before the disease," she whispered.

She flipped to the end of the journal. The pages were blank. She flipped backwards until she saw a final journal entry, dated around nineteen years ago. She read it out loud:

"'It's going around. There's nothing for it. Jack's gone. My wife's gone. In two day's time, I'll be gone too. I can feel it. It's a sick feeling, like something's not quite right. Everyone's gone. I'm one of the only ones left. In the world. It's over.'"

Skye could feel the desperate loneliness of the man inside his journal entry. How horrible it must have been, to lose your family to a disease that would wipe out your entire species and then bring rise to a new species almost just like it. It was strange, it was unusual...and it was sad.

+3 OOC: if you want me to change this let me know ^^;

He backed up, and upon doing so Skye suddenly spoke, she was reading a passage in the journal of the man that lay on the bed. He felt that it was an invasion of privacy, though he knew he could not resist such a temptation as that since the man was already gone… for twenty years. He listened, his heart clenching, his child and wife had died before him… it was a sad thing, and hopefully Shawchert could give him a good enough burial, though he wasn’t partial to all the ways of the humans, though he was quite enthralled by their abilities they had when they were alive. He wasn’t sure they had deserved what they did, he wasn’t there when it happened and the stories of it got stagnant over time.

May he rest in peace.

Shawchert sighed, he turned to Skye she seemed lost in thought. Shawchert put a paw on her shoulder and smiled. Hoping that would give her a little peace of mind. It wasn’t her fault the human died, and since the man was dead she had claims, it was only fair, at least that’s how Shawchert thought. He would not own any of his stuff if he died. The dead didn’t take anything with them.
