For once, the woman was wearing her four legged form; paws painted with light cream padding across the open landscape of the clan. Her dark muzzle was lowered to the ground, inhaling the fading trail of her once co-hydra. That monster was still the superior when it came to feral combat, and the female could only do so much on her own without a sparring partner. She was not accustomed to the lack of her sword’s weight, but speed was her friend in this form. She had to be aware of her strengths as well as weaknesses in every form and shape. Her usual attitude did not apply here, for being a fighter was all she had ever wanted to be.

The Lykoi hybrid was not a beautiful goddess while in battle, but she was quick and skilled. She did not burn with bloodlust on the battlefield, but it was the direction she led her life and it was one she was content about. Regardless of this, she had become and remained a victim. The older Inferni member was one that she appreciated in secrecy, but he was not a social thing and was hard to find. At least she would get a long nice walk out of this.

As always, Hybrid walked with purpose and kept his irritability close to hand. Every movement he made was laced with anger as he stalked through the territory, keeping mind of the borders nearby. He made no move to hide himself: his purpose was to patrol and keep the clan safe. If this meant declaring his presence to every potential intruder, then it was certainly worth it. He paused to stop and stare into the distance, but all he could see was trees, grass, and emptiness. There was nothing there and there would not be for some time. Sometimes, he came across the occasional joiner, but always kept watch from a distance. He did not enjoy interacting with newcomers and old members and so far, the only members of Inferni he could stand were few in number.

He clomped through the territory with methodical efficiency, making different loops and zigzagging back and forth. While he tried to keep his border patrols random, it was still true he had to make consistent loops back and forth across the borders. Sometimes he took shortcuts through the centre of Inferni, but even then, he knew he was predictable enough to eventually be found.

And it seemed as though this had come true; he perked his ears at the sound of a distant noise coming from within the clan lands. He trotted closer to investigate and soon saw Halo in her Lupus form. He was surprised to see the female in her four-legged form -- from what he recalled, she was often in her Optime form. He flicked an ear forward, wondering if she had sought him out for some reason. Was something wrong in Inferni? His expression grew grave and he trotted closer.

"What is it?" he asked. His voice was gruff and cracked as it always did. He narrowed his eyes as he considered the possibilities and reasons for her visit.

To her delight, she eventually caught the glimpse of another member; one that matched the appearance of the individual she sought. There was no smile to rise up and enchant her lovely features. Had he been a creature easy to bribe with flattery she might have, but Hybrid was a much harder nut to crack. Halo continued to wonder about him, and still struggled to decide whether or not she adored him or loathed him. The young Hydra admired his dedication to the clan’s leader. In some ways he could be considered an idol of sorts, but as an individual he was hard to get along with.

The woman could see from his expression that her intrusion would not be appreciated. The clan’s lands were calm and serene, unfortunately, and her reason for being her was her own. ”All is well,” she replied, giving him a silent greeting in the form of a polite dip of her slim muzzle. She knew what she wanted, and as time passed with the possession of this rank, her insecurity was slowly shedding, though there was always the knowledge that she could never be perfect at what she did. This made her aim for in even more though. ”I came here to ask you if you would be willing to spar with me on a regular basis.”

His frown deepened in concentration when she began to speak, but quickly dissipated when she admitted there was nothing amiss. He nodded curtly in response, glad to hear that there were no serious threats now. While it was a relief in one way, he sorely missed the Dahlian Wars. Even if it meant there was a wolf pack running about the lands murdering innocent Inferni members, it gave him purpose. Now, he was next to useless.

His ears perked up when she amended her first statement and his frown threatened to return. His brow twitched as he listened, but he did not have any reason to express his displeasure now. He considered her request for a moment, weighing the arguments in favour of and against assisting her. While he found her to be rather lofty in her ideals and carried herself with a sense of arrogance, she seemed less like herself today. He supposed if she kept this up, he wouldn’t mind teaching her how to fight. After all, sparring helped both of them: to advance their skills and better protect Inferni. He supposed that sparring with Halo was preferable to sparring – or even interacting with – that bratty Sepirah child.

“Fine,” he conceded. He wanted to demand something in return, but he needed nothing. All he wanted was blood and war. This was perhaps the closest thing he could get. “Begin now?”

She could be considered terribly flawed for her general lack of manners, but the young Lykoi had the ability to amend her attitude in the presence of superiors. Hybrid was not above her in rank, per say, but he was no less a warrior, and a dedicated one. Individuals did not need to do much to trigger her disgust, but it did not take all that much to gain her good will either. Hybrid didn’t care at all about her opinion of him, and this was one of the reasons why he was an exception to her silly rules.

Her face did not change as he considered his answer. What was she to do if he declined? There was a reason why she returned to him, for few clan members knew war like the creature before her. It was only natural for her to select him as her desired teacher of a coyote’s way of fighting. An oversized ear draped with copper stirred as a vocal answer was granted her. Contentment tasted sweet, but she made an effort to restrain the automatic smile that wanted to stretch across her delicate face.

Ears twitched slightly before leaning back against her dark skull. The Hydra was not certain what she had expected if she ended up finding him, but her schedule was more or less empty for the day. Why not? A nod was given to his form as her form found movement; creamy paws treading light and swift to push a bit of distance between them. She required it, she realized, the pumping beat of adrenaline. Perhaps her mind would learn to take pleasure from this eventually, the art of war.

He was satisfied with her response. She did not show too many emotions and he was grateful; oftentimes, others’ reactions only served to confuse him. He understood large gestures in social situations and minute changes in battle. There was such a strong polarization for what he picked up on that he realized he had chosen to tune his senses in one way and dull them in another. It was just as well – he would prefer to solve a problem with his teeth and claws than kind words and empty promises. They held no meaning for him.

She gave him a nod in response and the training began. It was certainly good for him to keep his skills sharp, for he rarely saw other canines near the borders anymore. He supposed somehow, they had figured it out: claimed territory was not to be treaded lightly upon. He could see many benefits to training with Halo and aiding her in the sharpening of her skills, even if he wasn’t sure if he particularly liked her. But it didn’t matter. Nothing mattered anymore once the battle began.

He keep his head low and scrunched in to his chest, watching his opponent. She moved away and he followed, mirroring her movements with his own. As she retreated, he followed her, keeping his body taut, but his muscles relaxed. When he was ready, he moved quickly and approached with agile fluidity. He made a quick turn and attacked her from her side. He pushed off with his back legs to close the distance between them so he could snap at her neck and swipe at her legs with his large paws.

Her mind struggled to dig up the instructions from their last sparring session, though it seemed to long ago. She knew the basics well—they were practically a part of her. Halo was a member that had truly devoted herself to her rank. Her appearance alone bore witness of this; strong muscles moving under her skin as she chose her steps carefully through intuition and experience. Her eyes would remain locked on Hybrid’s threatening form, and she would have no time to gaze down to the ground to ensure that she would not stumble on her path as she moved. Her head was kept low and she was basically mirroring the other canine’s stance, though it was not because she lacked the knowledge of how to move, but because she was in a battle stance as much as he was. It was different today, for the Holocaust male did not decide turns for them to lunge at each other. They had both moved further than that, and she knew she would have to treat this session as a realistic fight. That was exactly how she wanted it to be though, but her deep contentment did not shine through her demeanour. It was not time for gloat and happy faces now.

The male’s form followed her with ease, refusing to allow her proper space as she wished. She could feel her hackles rise in response to this intensity, magnifying her hybrid form as her tail bashed against her sides. Her muscles were tenser than she would have liked, but she would have to learn through failing in that case. It was strange how this could remain so different from her optime form. A mental note had already been made that she should spend much more time in this quadruped appearance. Halo was too accustomed to the bipedal form, and this could move to her disadvantage in more serious situations than this right here. She could never take it for granted that her sword could keep every opponent away from her. She was beautifully skilled with it, but it was not all. Hand to hand combat and teeth to teeth was just as important, and that was why she wanted Hybrid to help her. There were few more skilled than he, and in her mind, there were two dedicated fighters in this clan and both were present here.

Ruby narrowed as Hybrid’s form found speed and shot towards her. Her form found speed as well, though she would not blindly rush to him in return. He was doing the work for her, bringing his body close enough to receive punishment for his boldness, but she would have to deal with his attack before dealing one of her own. A few agile steps were taken in his direction, but then he turned and lunged at her side. Halo had trained long enough to know that in most cases such as this, it was no use to try to avoid the move completely. She would have to accept and take the blow and attempt to control the damage done instead. The female’s body twisted as well, turning her front slightly to him just as his jaws seemed to target the area by her neck. She kept her head low and waited for only a moment before she too moved to snap at him, trading the blow to her neck for an opportunity to snap at the upper part of his chest that seemed to be temporarily available as he reached for her.

Hard paws threatened to disrupt her balance, but by now her body had been given some time to turn and establish balance and she pushed harshly against his heavy form, trying to bite into his chest and have him draw away so that she could swiftly step back to force space between them. Hybrid had told her to use her agility for what it was worth. That was how coyotes fought, attack, draw back and attack again.

She had improved since their last sparring session. Hybrid realized this almost immediately as he began to circle her and finally acknowledged it once she retaliated against his attack. Her response was quick and her movements were swift – it was strange to think of himself as a bulky attacker, but against Halo, it certainly seemed so. He had always relied on his speed and stealth to win his fights, but now that he was paired with someone who was smaller and quicker, he realized he wouldn’t be able to use any of his old tricks to win this. He would either have to outmatch her speed or use what little strength he had over her. He also realized that his familiarity in his Secui form would be key: Halo had fighting experience, but not necessarily in her Lupus or Secui forms. From what she had told him last time (or from what he had observed, he forgot which it was) she was far more comfortable in her Optime form. He would have to use this somehow – he just didn’t know how.

As Hybrid lunged at Halo, she shifted her balance and moved herself so she was facing him almost square on. As Hybrid snapped for her neck, he felt her teeth graze his neck and then sink in to his skin. He yowled in pain, but could not avoid her attack. Since he had been in mid-strike in the mid-air, he could not move or twist away. Her attack landed and Hybrid ended up snapping at the air. She had moved lower than him, and was now practically hanging off his neck with her teeth. Even with Halo’s teeth digging in to his neck, he still tried to pull her down by swiping at her with his clawed paws. It didn’t work; her centre of gravity was too low and she was too solid in her stance. She was a rock. However, Hybrid was still taller and could potentially get away, if only he could shake her teeth. He twisted and tried to make her let go, but every movement only brought shooting pain up and down his neck. He quickly tried to dive straight down with his head now that he knew where his opponent was. She was practically underneath him, so he scrunched in his neck – as best he could, at least – and tried to bite the top of her neck, rip off an ear, or dig his teeth into her skull. As he tried to bite, he kicked off with his back legs to put all his weight down onto his bite. He used his front paws to stabilize his movements, not wanting to fall and let Halo take a huge bite of his flesh and leave him with a bite-sized gash in his neck.

Much of her current skill was thanks to him, as she strived to remember every little fragment of advice she had been offered last time when he had proven to her that he was far from incapable of speaking more than sporadic, short sentences. Ruby watched the muscles of his form as it travelled with motion, for eyes could not be trusted when skilled warriors moved to injure the flesh. He remained more experienced than she, and she knew that he knew his quadruped forms much better than she knew hers. It was a shame, but one that could be turned and mended if she just put her priorities right. She could only get so much out of her lonely sessions at dawn, and would grant her lupus form more focus from now on. Kesho would help her greatly at this as well, and she was pleased to have him as one of the clan’s fresher Hastatis. There were too many fools in Inferni these days, but she believed they were lucky with their warriors in training, for that bunch belonged to the lesser dimwits.

Teeth tasted the area directly above her shoulders, but there was not time for her to offer a physical reaction to the incoming pain of sharp daggers aiming to dig into her skin. Some fur would no doubt be ripped out now, but to her this was still nothing more than a spar that was supposed to be friendly. The woman’s own fangs managed to grasp his thick, pale pelted throat, and there was a rush of premature victory soaring through her cautious form. The warrior princess knew better than to let the swirl of emotion get to her head, however, for she would lose it all if she allowed herself to be devoured by the arrogance from dealing a silly little blow to this potential enemy. Jaws clenched against the male’s skin, and there was crimson dripping down on her tongue. The bite could possibly have been fatal if the current battle had been one of life and death, but she kept only enough strength in her bite to maintain her fortunate hold of him for a few moments longer.

The rumble of his voice vibrated against her clasp, overpowering the beat of her heart enticing her hearing. Paws swiped at her with force, but as long as her hind legs were strongly inserted onto firm earth, her stance was secure. Her jaws were locked as he tried to shake her off, but the weight of her entire body kept her attached to his discontent form, firm muscles stiff and reluctant to allow her to be thrown about with wailing feet and loose neck. His hold on her neck had been temporary at best, but this was no place for her to linger, but she was not supposed to pause to search her mind to find her next move. She had to feel it. Breath still flowed smoothly, but it would not last. His form shifted, and she could smell a change of tactic in him, which was soon revealed in the form of unkind teeth finding sensitive flesh, this time closer to her skull. A slight twist of her head was immediately given, pushing the length of her neck against his form to protect flattened receivers. She did not doubt she could risk lose an ear if she was not careful. She’d rather risk teeth marks hidden by thick fur than a ravaged ear.

The pressure crushing down on her was enormous, and her breath was hoarse as her body followed gravity and the weight of the male. The woman released the mouth of fur and skin, darting to one rooted front leg of the male. All she aimed for now was to find a swift solution to make him let go. Her goal was not to cause injury, but a sharp roaring snap of pain. His hold on her neck was crushing; devastating to the nerves located there despite thick fur and skin. She reached for that leg anyway, aiming low as his weight had already brought her close to the ground, and she was certain it would be felt if she managed to snap her jaws forcefully against the front tendons above his paw. Claws on hind legs scraped against the frozen soil, as she pushed her luck slightly, uncertain if she would be able to reach the male’s limb without helping him tear further into her burning neck.

That was a lovely post! 409 for your troubles Wink

It worked! Her grip on her neck loosened quickly – and just in time, too, for Hybrid was already finding it quite difficult to breathe. Even though he was driving his teeth straight into her skull, he tried not to kill her with it – while he knew he could somehow find a way to bring her to death’s door, he certainly didn’t want to murder the only decent warrior in Inferni. It was strange thinking she could fight, but he supposed the stock he had to choose from was of a much lower grade. Or, perhaps, Halo was simply a highly quality warrior. He never would have thought this before, but the Second Dahlian War had stolen away a few good – and a few rather dim-witted – comrades.

He turned his face slightly to the side so he would not puncture her skin, but let her know that he now had a hold on her. This did not last long – she responded quickly, as was necessary in any fight. Hybrid was glad to see she was thinking with her muscles and responding with what felt right. With all of his weight on his front legs, and his back legs still in the air and yet to return to the ground, her bite was devastating. Hybrid yowled in pain and lashed out. He instantly let go of the hold he’d had on her head and yanked his foreleg back. He wasn’t fast enough, for he felt her teeth close around his leg and give him a certain sort of pain he’d never quite felt before. So, his reaction to pull it back was instantaneous and he felt her teeth scrape across his leg all along the way.

As he did this, Hybrid kept his neck scrunched in and his body low, waiting for the next attack. He did not wait long, for he knew he would have to retaliate or lose his chance. He tried to dart back in and clamp his teeth around her muzzle, effectively stopping the alligator’s deadly bite. It was a risky move that he would usually only use in a last-ditch effort since it risked either one of them losing an eye or a good chunk of fur. However, since he wasn’t really trying to take her eye – he remembered this now that it was just a sparring exercise, not a real fight – he would only try to show her the possibilities, not what would actually happen.

Sorry for fail post, Tammimon ;_; let me know if you want this changed.

A blast of sound collided with her sensitive audits, but they were well received, for it spoke of success. His unkind grasp was released shortly after. Barely a moment after snapping them shut over his skin, his choice to attempt to try to yank his paw away only assisting her at bringing soaring pain to that limb. She held on a moment longer before releasing, taking a step back from his hovering form. Originally she had wished to allow her body to explode with speed and carry her to temporary safety so that she could evaluate the damage already done, but she found that she should not give him the privilege of recovering from the spray of pain where her teeth so cruelly had connected with his nerves.

Jaws opened again, initially to deliver another blow, but as the male’s own move shot towards her, she met his fangs face first, twisting her face several degrees to the left in an attempt to weaken the chance for their fangs to reach each other’s face. Her form was pressed backwards now, for she feared the fangs aimed at her face. Vanity was definitely her worst flaw her, and she loathed this fact. Halo trusted that this was something that would not infect her mind in a true fight, but right now it did. Her body twisted and allowed a front limb to aim for his front; intending to toss in a punch that would serve only to offer him a small blow and give her an extra amount of speed to get some distance between them.

That was fine! End soon? Smile (300+)

He was surprised the spar had been going on this long. They could have easily killed one another in a few instances, but Hybrid was glad they had both held back. His neck, right foreleg, and maw was aching and throbbing in pain and he hoped they could end this soon. Although he didn’t normally mind a few bumps, scratches, bruises, and even scars; he was starting to grow weary. He hadn’t been eating as well as he should have since the completion of the Second Dahlian War and this was beginning to catch up to him. He’d have to find a way to weasel his way out and end the spar.

As Halo moved to strike, Hybrid was able to capture a bit of the fur on her cheek in his mouth, but little else. She turned her head away to deflect the blow and Hybrid just ended up colliding face-first into the other Hydra. The collision was quite forceful and left Hybrid stunned for a few seconds. In this time, he tried to croak out a feeble, “stop,” but wasn’t sure if she heard him.

He felt her foreleg connect with his and he stumbled over it, tripped, and then took a forward dive to get out of her way. His balance had been severely compromised and he was already on his way down, so he tried to get out of the way and roll to safety. When he picked himself up, he found his left foreleg, the one she had just tripped him on, was now sore and throbbing. It felt like he had sprained something.

He hopped back and shouted: “good!” He then added: “We’re done. You did well. Thinking with your body not your head.” As always, his words were raspy and broken in parts as his voice wavered in and out. Perhaps it was the intense spar or just how tired he was, but he was breathing heavily now and could see his chest heaving in and out and his breath coming out in white puffs and gasps.

300+ Sure, you can have him walk away or whatever you fancy since they're done Big Grin <3 thanks for thread, tammimooon!

A sharp inhale was caught as a prickling pain danced across her cheek, though she did not permit herself the option of allowing thoughts to linger on the possible damage that had been inflicted. A warrior could not succumb to simple pain, and if it was his teeth that had grazed her lovely face or fur that had ripped off, it did not matter. The collision of their faces left her too slightly numb for a moment, and perhaps that was why the croaking sound from the other failed to make the woman’s flattened audits understand the word. He tripped on her leg, and the added pressure it momentarily caused to it made her front buckle slightly as well, as she almost fell down with him.

Instead she clumsily withdrew her front limb and skittered a few steps away, fur on edge and orbs unable to abandon the canine form. Quite a few areas on her body ached and burned, and she was relatively certain that the tint of blood floating lightly in the air probably belonged to them both. Breathing quickly, she actually felt some form of relief as he spoke, shouting a word she would never have expected from the generally grumpy man as well as closure. It was over. She kept drinking the cool air greedily, feeling no need to let a victorious grin stretch the edges of her lips. The warrior princess turned back to Hybrid’s figure, her form losing its tenser battle stance for a relaxed, upright one.

Muscles were strained and part of her ached along with her racing heart, but she would never complain about this. The pain was wonderful, and the man’s words made her want to blush with joy instead. It meant a lot to her to have this creature offer her such compliments. ”Thank you,” she snapped between two inhales, allowing her hind legs to lower her into a seat. Much of it had to be luck though, and she knew that none of them had gone all out. She still did not know where she stood, but this had been a wonderful session. The woman craned her neck slightly, allowing crimson orbs to fall beneath his face in gentle, appreciate submission for this uncommon display of kindness. Perhaps it was just honesty, but she was grateful nevertheless.

Yay! This was a fun thread. Smile

He flinched when he saw Halo begin to relax, wondering for a moment if this was a foolish thing for her to do. Indeed, it was best to remain relaxed, but he often forgot that too in fights. He was all energy and anger, coiled too tightly to remember to relax and give his aching muscles a rest. On the other hand, that could have easily been a trick and he could have feinted and taken her off guard when she was relaxing. He supposed he could only do this because he had earned some of her trust – somehow – and that she would have otherwise been more suspicious had he truly been an enemy out for blood. He nodded once to himself, satisfied that he had muddle through this problem.

Hybrid gave her an odd, confused look when she thanked him. He wasn’t sure why or why she had felt it was necessary, so he just narrowed his eyes and shrugged in response.

“Sure,” he grunted. “Keep practicing,” he added. He wondered if there was anything else to add, but couldn’t think of anything. He frowned when he noticed her lower her head and he let a low, disapproving growl rumble in his throat. He didn’t like it. He would demand it from others he disliked, but never from one he didn’t dislike. He shook his head and then took a step back. He glanced around, shrugged one last time, and then trotted away.
