the storm is coming in

Set on the 28th, noon? Devil’s Demesne. Other leaders welcome but not necessary.

INCHARACTER

It was cold. True, it had been frigid for several months, and Vheissu had seen snow, ice, and freezing rain. Yet this wind was something else. The ginger man gripped his sarape tightly about him as his tangled hair whipped about his face, lashing against his habitually squinted eyes. The road seemed to wind on forever, carrying him around the mountain rising up on his left. He did not particularly desire to climb it, yet the trail was his siren, and he would follow it into Hell itself if he had to. Which is likely, thought Vheissu grimly.

The man stopped abruptly, dropping to all fours to sniff the cracked pavement in front of him. He moved forward for some time in that attitude, wandering from one lane to the other, sometimes doubling back to sniff at a particular weed sticking up through a crevice or an overturned bit of asphalt. The trail was becoming muddled. Vheissu must have been close to a heavily populated place, for more and more scents were crossing into his path. The mongrel glowered, the expression pulling at the scars across his lips. He straightened and continued along the road, pulling the sarape tightly around him once more. Though the new scents were problematic, the man was not too concerned, for there had not been a creature yet who he could not find. He would finish his task.

Indeed he had come to a well populated place, for the unmistakable signs and scents of a packland soon met him. Another complication. The man sighed, the deep sound vibrating his chest. Normally he would have continued walking, not heeding the invisible fences that stood around the territory. Vheissu did not have the time or patience to deal with silly formalities. Yet by the smell of things this particular group seemed to be unforgiving of trespassers. Another sigh. Pulling the sack from his back, the ginger rummaged through the few contents and drew out a pack of cigarillos and a box of matches. He lit one and squatted, peering around at as much territory as he could see. No one for miles, or so he could tell. It was highly likely that he was being watched, as he suspected of the nature of the clan to be secretive, elite, and militaristic.

Vheissu flicked an ear, took a drag of his cigar, and stood again. There was only one thing to do. The trail led right into the territory. A clever move, not surprising, though complicating and frustrating as Vheissu was sure it was intended to be. “All right.” The ginger man lifted his head and howled a long coyote howl, signaling his presence. Hopefully it wouldn’t be too long. He was not a very patient man.

Sepirah had to admit that she was really starting to dislike the chill of winter again. It was alright where there was just a bit of snow on the ground, but for the past couple of days it just seemed like it was beginning to snow during the days, as well as having breeze rush against her body at the wrong time. The dark princess had been trying to avoid these days and wait for the calmer ones before she did any of her rounds. It seemed she couldn’t today as the winds continued and she had no choice but to attend to her duties. The jackal reluctantly rose from her sleeping position and made her way towards the exit of her home. She hung her scarf around her neck and her mask over her eyes. She paused before stepping out into the cold. She could feel the wind sinking into her fur and straight to her skin. The dark girl wanted to rush back inside her cave but she knew that her duties came first. She braved through the wind and began to head for the borders.

Sepirah normally checked around the eastern side of the borders, but today she decided to check along the western side and head north from there. It would help her to get to know the Inferni lands better and check out areas of the pack she had not visited yet. She was known for hanging out near the eastern side of the pack lands as well as the northern. The dark princess began to make her way through the snow and up north towards the borders. She began to see the line of skulls which was a sure sign that she was right at the borders. It was a good thing that she didn’t have to sniff around for them. The jackal let out a sigh as she followed them to the western side. So far she didn’t see anything nor picked up the scent of someone being around there. This was a good sign that she would be able to head back home and get some more rest. The dark girl’s ears lowered as she turned around to begin heading back home.

Sepirah stopped when she heard the howl coming from the north western end of the Inferni territory. This didn’t sound like anyone that came from her pack and it sounded like it was back the way she came. The dark princess reluctantly began to head back north and towards the sound of the howl. She came closer and noticed the male standing there. She gave a low growl from the cold as she came closer. ”What brings you to the Inferni pack borders?” She couldn’t help but come out a bit rude. She hated the cold and it placed a bit of her frustration on her personality. The jackal raised her head to look at the male seeing as she was still in her lupus form and he seemed to be in his optime form.

INCHARACTER

Vheissu had only to stand there for a quarter of an hour before his call was answered. He was pleased, though this emotion did not express itself. The mongrel sucked down the last of the smoke and then flicked the cigarillo onto the pavement, where it rolled and then fell into a deep crack in the asphalt. Satisfied, the man exhaled slowly through his nose, smoke rising and breath freezing in the cold. He let his arm fall back to his side, where it instantly was hidden by the three-tone poncho hanging on his shoulders. The piece of simple clothing was not to keep warm; his coat was long and double-layered in winter, making even a journey through a blizzard somewhat comfortable. It's main purpose was to cover his vibrant and rather unique color. Not only did it make hunting and blending in almost impossible, it raised too many questions. And Vheissu did not have time for questions.

A less-than-warm welcome. Not surprising. The growl seemed less directed at him and more to the general inconvenience of dealing with him. He could understand that. He didn’t want to deal with the girl, either. But he had a job to do, and this was his only obstacle. Now if only she would be a gracious host and allow him safe passage. Of course, he realized the improbability of her denying his request, but why not try? They seemed to be on the same page. Vheissu briefly took notice of her odd appearance. (Of course, who was he to say what was odd? He was a dog wearing a poncho.) A scarf and a mask. Perhaps she too wanted to disguise herself.

"Need to pass through," stated the ginger vagabond. His tone was polite, but held an undercurrent of urgency. He was not one to beat around the bush. Already his patience was waning, though his deep red eyes were half-closed as if overcome with boredom.

Sepirah watched the male as he disposed of his item. She was never one for smoking and didn’t plan to start, although that was no reason for this male to think that he could just litter around their pack lands. She let out a small growl that was actually aimed to him before turning her anger back to the weather. Why one earth someone was trying to travel in this weather was beyond her. The snow kept coming and she couldn’t believe she had to be bothered by someone at the borders. Even though she could feel the annoyance rising in her stomach, she didn’t want to seem rude to the male. The longer she would spend arguing with him, the more time it would take for him to get out of her hair and the longer it would take for her to get back home. The dark princess could feel the cold building up as the moment went on. She wished that the storm would end, or at least get less heavy so that she didn’t have to feel herself shivering. Her fur was not that long and she knew that it was easier for her body to get colder. The jackal pushed along until she was within hearing distance of the male.

Sepirah paused as she listened to the male’s request. He wanted to pass right through the Inferni pack lands. Part of her wanted to tell him to just walk around but the other pat of her told her that if she just let him through then she would be able to return to her home much quicker. She growled lowly before nodding and told him to follow her through the pack lands. She was sure that as long as she had her eyes on him the whole time, she would be able to escort him through the Inferni territory. She began to lead the way through the storm, trying to sniff out the direction they were heading in. She could feel her body becoming colder and colder, but her will told her to push on and get this male to his destination. The dark princess’ golden gaze turned back to him as she used her tail to brush some snow off her back. ”So tell me, where are you heading?” She needed to know so that she knew which part of the borders to lead him to. The jackal continued to brave through the storm and realized that she hadn’t even learned the male’s name yet. She would need this information so she could inform the leaders about her leading him through the pack lands, though once they were on the other side, she would make sure to let him know that he would not be able to wander around whenever he pleased. ”So male, what’s your name?”

INCHARACTER

The girl, though obviously not pleased with his request, turned and began to lead him through the territory. Vheissu rolled his shoulders, adjusted his pack, and set off after her, stocky legs propelling him forward with lithe motion. He liked her succinctness thus far, and was beginning to hope that their journey through would be wholly taciturn. The vagabond’s hopes were foiled, however, when her young feminine voice broke the wintery silence. He understood that she had the right to question him—he was a stranger and was intruding on her home—yet an inaudible sigh still escaped his ginger maw and his breath froze in the air. Vheissu allowed the silence to reign for a few moments before he answered.

“I’m following a trail actually, so I dunno,” came his baritone drawl. For the time being their path was the exact same as his prey’s, the all too familiar scent taking every twist and turn they were. Perhaps she had led his quarry through as well. The wolfdog made a mental note to ask her, wondering when it would be a good time to spring the question on her. Some people did not like many questions, especially from strangers. He could understand that. Vheissu hated questions. His feelings did not stop another one from following shortly after however. His lips twitched in amusement at her wordage. He had been called a lot of things—dude, man, cowboy, hybrid, dog, and various others—but ‘male’ he just found silly. Perhaps she was foreign. “Vheissu,” he offered lazily, though his accent disappeared when the name rolled of his tongue. He had realized long ago that properly pronounced, his name sounded strange and enigmatic, but paired with his southern inflections, it just sounded ignorant. When he first adopted it he had practiced for weeks, searching for the perfect way to say it. Finally he had settled on it: “VAY-zoo.” And that was what he offered to the young lady now. He did not ask for her name in return. He figured if she wished to give it to him, she would.
