The Good That Won't Come Out

Jan 2 is Nayru's birthday!!! yay!!! come celebrate the awesomeness that is Nayru. SSWM: 1057

Nayru dragged the buck back towards her greenhouse in her Secui form. The kill wasn't her's, not exactly, but that she hadn’t actually brought down the deer didn't bother her as she thought it might have. The fairy child did not have to prove that she was capable of killing. She was. Nor did she had to show she could provide for the others. She could. The buck was rightfully her's and laboriously she dragged it from the very western border of Dahlia de Mai to the very eastern border, unsure of what she would do with a whole buck to herself. She hadn't quite felt like taking it to the Victorian home after her encounter with Aro's father, she felt as if she needed to be alone, and in her greenhouse she had never once been bothered. When she reached the stone wall that enclosed the veiled gardens where her home resided she realized that the buck wouldn't fit through the tiny hole that her and Gideon had created as children, which she still fit through in her lupus form. For a long time that had been the only means of entering veiled gardens, but as she had grown she found the door from the inside and opened it. However, from the outside it was covered in thick vines and even in the winter if one did not already know where to look they would never find it. Shifting easily back into optime, the two toned fairy stood on two feet once more, found the door and brought her kill into the gardens.

Leaving the buck by the entrance she moved toward the green house, her tiny feet carrying her quickly, crimson gaze barely took in any of the garden, which was so secluded aside from Gideon she doubted anyone ever came to visit. The glass of her home shone in the midday sun and Nayru quickened her pace even more, pushing open the glass doors with eager hands. Once inside among the warm, moist air and her plethora of beloved plants she was suddenly was very weary and she thought nothing of laying in the hay bed she had made for herself and falling into a deep slumber. This was wholly unlike her, who never took naps during the day any longer, but she did not fight it. She merely slept and dreamt. And of course she dreamt of the white lady.

When the dream had come and gone Nayru woke very abruptly, sitting up in her bed. It had been a long while since she thought of the white lady, and even when the ghost tried to contact her through dreams she had ignored her. Now the dream had been so vivid, so real… except that she couldn't remember any of it. Rubbing her eyes with slim fingers she blinked and then gasped. The deep navy eyes of the ghost twinkled at her from outside the green house. Nayru blinked and the specter was gone, but the girl knew it hadn't been a trick of her eyes. The woman had been standing there, shinning brilliantly against the winter sky which had once more grown dark. Breathing in deep Nayru slowed her pounding heart and searched for the woman once more, but she was gone as quickly as she had come.

Closing her eyes Nayru thought then of the white lady. It had been she who had brought Nayru to Dahlia de Mai, who had left her there for Conor to find but who had never explained herself. Nayru hadn't told Conor that once she had seen the white lady again in waking, the day she had shifted. Nor did she tell him how her image plagued her dreams at times. It was easy to keep the white lady from him or from anyone else because Nayru was no longer sure if she were real or not. Certainly she had been at one point, for how else could she have brought Nayru to Dahlia de Mai, so many months ago? And thinking then she wondered if she had ever seen the white lady before then, but no she hadn't. She could only remember her mother, who looked much like the white lady but with lighter eyes and grey specks up her legs, and her two toned father and her sisters. And remembering them she realized, she was one year old today.

One year had passed since her birth and Nayru sat for a long while musing over all that had happened to her. She had been born, she had been separated from her family and brought by a strange lady to a strange place that she now could not imagine living anywhere else. Conor and Bris had raised her, Gideon had befriended her, Saluce had instructed her and Larkspur had corrupted her. So many other faces came and went before her eyes and soon Nayru was weeping, although she wasn't sure why. Her body shook with sobs that made no sound and her eyes longed to spill tear, but the wholly human expression of grief was beyond her. And all at once her grief was over and Nayru felt nothing but peace.

Rising from bed, Nayru moved to where she had set her belongings before shifting into her secui form and re-adorned herself. First the anklet that Bris has crafted so lovingly, and then the sheathed dagger that she strapped to her with the anklet. Lastly she put on the necklace that Gideon had given her and for a moment she fingered the charm, then let it fall away as she moved outside. The wood had been gathered long ago, on a day she had been bored with nothing to do, and the small fire she made did not take long. She moved to the door of the garden, which was so well hidden and pushed it open, leaving it gaping for all the Dahlians to discover. Throwing back her head she called out, as she never had in Dahlia de Mai before for she was always the one to answer howls, not sound them. However she called for them now, her family and friends, and then turned back towards the fire, pulling out her dagger before she set about skillfully slicing the flesh of the buck and setting it by the flames to roast.

Saluce is grumpy old man again!

Saluce was out as always, patrolling and checking in on whomever he came across. Today he had broken the routine and was strolling along in his lupus form. It afforded him a lot of ease in travel, and with the cold he didn’t feel like lingering much in one place. Earlier he had picked up on some tracks inside dahlia that he could only guess belonged to one of his pupils. Paying it not much mind he continued along on his journey. Nose to the ground, ears standing up on his head as he went about his normal duties. Today would have been a good day, but he had been passed over again for promotion. Guessing only that this time it was due to his recent absence from the pack, if he let it, that wound could fester in him till he’d finally just leave the boy king by himself but a promise was a promise. Since the day he had returned he had harbored a bit of resentment toward him. The thoughts along brought a bit of anger toward him.

Again he felt a surge of anger fill his soul, aching for him to release it. Aching for him to tread up to the source of these thoughts and rip his throat out. But the thoughts where short lived for now, his teacher’s voice ringing in his head echoing teachings he still had to learn to live by. But still the thoughts remained if not dormant. His demeanor changing as if on cue as he lashed out on a sapling next to him, evidence that the monster still remained, chained but it remained none the less. This was his cross to bear, his punishment, to struggle with his anger, and to struggle with trusting his leadership. Cold blue eyes looked upon the broken sapling, the half inch trunk snapped easily between his teeth. Some part of him wished for him to unleash that. But again his eyes closed and he worked to clear his mind, worked to center himself.

As he was struggling with these facts his ears perked up rather quickly upon hearing Nayru’s chorus ring across the landscape. There wasn’t a sense of urgency to it but with her he never knew. His paws struck across the landscape with a thunder of power toward the pixies home. As he neared he smelled blood but was unable to define it and his pace quickened before her home was in view. As he slowed he smelled fire and his bristling form relaxed a bit as he circled around trying to discover why the call was given out. Slowly his massive form even in lupus form walked along until those blues discovered the door and found her scent much more evident in the room. Eyes looked around cautiously before settling on the women’s form by the fire. Now sure that she was okay his form relaxed as he approached, breathe was still labored from the unexpected run but his eyes looked curiously up at the female. She out ranked him now but at the moment it didn’t matter. If she chose to make a deal of it then well they would have to settle things the old fashioned way.

“why the howl? I gather you are okay?” he questioned quietly, as he neared the fire. Some primal part of his form was slightly nervous around the fire. Something that always happened when he relapsed back down to all fours, letting his more primal nature take precedence over his more refined nature.

Happy birthday to Nay Nayyyy :] Also, that table is hard for me to read, Matt ^^; wc: 650

Gideon had been feeling pretty down on himself ever since the last pack meeting, keeping to himself and doing little projects to keep himself busy. He was planning on helping Saul with his cabin as soon as the male asked for his help, having offered it at their coming-of-age celebration, but hadn't heard from him yet about it. He wanted to show that he could really do some good in the pack and that he did have a clear purpose and could do something right. Maybe he wasn't so good at hunting now, but with time and practice he would be able to hunt just as well in his lupus form as he could in his optime. That was a goal for him.

Layla had come to live with him and the pups in the house, and he saw her on a daily basis now. The older female had been one of his first friends in the pack, having helped teach him how to fish as a young pup, and he was determined to pay her back and help her out in any way that he could. He considered her to be one of his closest friends and a mentor to him and had many day to day conversations with her, often speaking to her about his feelings about various topics. It was nice to have someone to talk to and he genuinely enjoyed having her around.

He was already heading toward her house, four paws padding out a rhythm on the frozen soil, when he heard her howl. It didn't sound too urgent and the boy didn't hurry too much more than he already had. She wanted company, perhaps? Gideon wouldn't mind being the one to provide that. She had seemed to like the gift that he'd given her, and he had decided to give her many more in the future because of that reaction. He had many interesting things from the city that he had picked up, thinking that she might like them, and he'd give them to her over time.

The large black and gray tinged male made his way toward where the house had sounded before, realizing that he was going in the direction of the garden that he had discovered with the black and white female. Why was she calling people to the garden? Curious, he sped up a little so that he could get there faster. He could smell a kill, food, and the scent of Saluce as he approached the tall walls of their secret garden. Before, all that had been available for entrances to the garden had been a small hole...but now the doors were flung wide open. Had he even realized that the place had doors to it? He guessed that the humans must have had some way to get into it when they had built it all that time ago, but hadn't thought on that too much.

Their secret garden was a beautiful place. He realized that they had given it an official name, the Veiled Gardens, but to him it would always just be their own private, secret place. Even if the doors were open to all, he'd still consider it that. It was the place that he had spent most of his time as a pup, romping around in the flowers and plants. They still remained, frozen in ice, the crystals on them glimmering in the light of the fire that Nayru had built.

The scent of food made his mouth water and he licked his lips as he reached Saluce and Nayru. Gideon didn't greet Nayru as he usually did, didn't nuzzle or prod her with his nose, instead standing and giving her a small, private smile. "Hey" He said simply. "What's going on?" She had a nice fire going. What was the usually anti-social Nayru planning? He was interested to find out, that was for sure!

As the guests began to arrive Nayru was seated next to the fire, her eyes turned up the January sky that was smeared with winter stars. Every so often a crackle and sizzle came from the roasting meat, causing Nayru's right ear to flick back. It was the same motion her ears made when they first detected the foot falls of Saluce and by the sound alone she knew he traveled on four paws. As he approached she turned, staying seated. If she were to stand in her optime for she would tower over the male, which she preferred not to do. That he had responded wasn't surprising, but neither was it expected. Rarely did she think of Saluce as the social type, and her call had not been urgent, yet he was here and she was glad of it.

"Of course I am okay, I only wanted to share a deer I've caught.” Nayru bowed her head to him in greeting and then jutted her nose towards the fire indicated the roasting meat. The explanation wasn't much, but it was enough and it was true. Whether the male would be annoyed, having come perhaps only thinking help was needed, she wasn't sure. There were jagers enough in the pack now, and two head hunters, one of which was her, and meat to share wouldn't be scarce. Winter months meant less prey, so that more wolves had been assigned to stock up their meat supplies was not strange, and for Nayru to have been recognized as a skillful enough hunter to help direct the others was pleasing. That she ranked higher than most others in the pack hadn't really occurred to her, simply she looked at her rank as a job, and her job was merely to serve all of Dahlia de Mai. To those still in ranks lower than her she dipped her head as if they were next in line after Conor, no matter how low they ranked. Simply it was beyond Nayru, who viewed herself separate from the other Dahlians in a way she couldn't explain.

Gideon followed, and for once entered the gardens through the doors. Never before had she so openly directed anyone towards her house. She had told a few people she lived in the gardens on the eastern borders, but she never told them how to find the door in the garden, and she never let anyone into the green house if they did enter the gardens. The greenhouse was truly her's and her's alone, the gardens belonged to the Dahlians who were cunning enough to know how to enter. Yet now anyone who answered her call knew the secret, and she assumed for Gideon too the door's location had been unknown. Yet he was familiar with the gardens, and the even the greenhouse, and she simply wondered if he regretted their garden being exposed to all of Dahlia de Mai.

Yet he did not seem regretful or angry or anything but pleased to see her and Nayru returned the smile that Gideon offered her, her crimson gaze holding his turquoise one for a moment longer than necessary. "Hey.” He too was on four legs as opposed to her two and Nayru looked from one canine to the other, glad that at least two guests had answered her call. If any others appeared, and it was possible as those traveling on two legs from the western ends of the pack, where most of the wolves resided, their travel would take a long time. Yet both Conor and Bris would be likely with Eclipse, and the others were not so close to her. If they came she would be gladder still to have more Dahlians about her, but if they didn't she wouldn't be disappointed.

Her two toned face turned from Saluce to Gideon and back again, a half smiled on her lips. Nayru could tell that something more was required, that to call a gathering was too out of character for the girl to have done completely unprovoked, and though she didn't want them to feel obligated to her in any manner she decided to tell them. "I realized today is the anniversary of my birth. I thought perhaps you guys would like to share a meal with me?"

The ill tempered warrior simply let his head rotate to the side in a questioning glance at her. Share a meal? This was a break in character for her he supposed. He hadn’t known her to be very social or to actually plan a get together. But then again he wasn’t the most social thing either so maybe it was a good thing. Nose sniffed at the sizzling meat before he finally sat down to her side. Content to at least visit for a few moments before bidding her good bye.

Blue eyes then looked upon the presence of another and this time he gave the youth a questioning glance. By his appearance he gathered that Gideon had figure out how to shift back. That was good, he’d have to congratulate him on that. Since the hunt Saluce had wondered about him, he’d spent a lot of time raising his foster kids and he quietly wondered if it had spoiled a bit of his innocence. You where only a pup once and it was over all too quickly it seemed and he hoped for the young male’s sake that he’d be able to get out and have some fun while he could still get by with it.

Then her voice came across his ears and he processed the words. It was her birthday, little Nayru was a year old it seemed. He glanced at Gideon and gave him a smirk before turning back to the fairy girl who had planned her own birthday party.

“Happy birthday Nayru!” he replied cheerily, his spirits raising a bit. Maybe for just today he could let his own addled mind rest and enjoy their company. Do some healing to his spirit sort of thing. But he was usually out of his element when it came to happy occasions. So he would let the two young adults take the lead.

Oh no! It was her birthday? A feeling of guilt welled up in his chest; he hadn’t brought anything for her. He wanted to tell her to wait there and that he’d be right back so that he could head back to the house and get one of the gifts that he had been planning on giving her anyway, but didn’t want to leave her alone to eat her meal with only Saluce there for company. He liked Saluce and all, but he wanted to be there for her on her birthday as well. He would have to give her whatever present it was the next time he saw her to make up for it, he decided.

”Yes, Happy Birthday. I feel bad…I didn’t bring you anything.” Stupid him. ”Impressive deer. I’ve been trying to practice my hunting more in this form…ever since that meeting..” He trailed off. No. Today was Nayru’s birthday and he wouldn’t remind her of his failure. Tonight wasn’t all about him. ”Anyway! I’m excited for my birthday, too. I already feel like I’m a year old because I’m a full member of the pack, but I still have a little while to wait” The talkative male grinned at her, turquoise eyes shining. ”Is some of this deer for me?”

Nayru watched as both of her guests took in the information she had given them. They both seemed surprised at her announcement, but why would they have known if the first place? She had barely remembered her own birthday, and it truly wasn't a big deal by any means. Yet Saluce wished her a happy birthday and she bowed her head to him, silently thanking him for the kind words. He had never been much for idle chit chat, and she suppose that he had little to say now. That he had answered her call and was here to celebrate with her was enough. She was content in their relationship once more, the unpleasantness that had passed between them when she had sought out Saluce seemingly behind them. Or at least unspoken, and Nayru saw no need to comment on it or bring it up.

Gideon had more to say, and Nayru turned her ruby eyes upon her closest friend. He seemed displeased that he hadn't come with a gift, and she titled her head at the boy, confused. Why would he give her a gift? Simply for living a whole year? He had already given her a present, she thought as she once more fingered the necklace that almost always hung about her neck now. Yet he quickly moved past that, speaking of the deer and his words flowed more quickly and easily than either those of herself or Saluce and she was glad that Gideon was there. He would take the pressure of conversation off either herself or the older man.

"Giddy, don't be silly. You don't need to get me anything." She looked at the deer and then back to Gideon, thinking back over Hibernal. He hadn't come with anything, but even then she hadn't thought him a failure. Nor did she now. "Of course some of this deer is for you. I certainly can't eat it all myself. Both of you, please, eat." She indicated the sliced meat and took some up for herself, holding it in her paws and waiting for the other two to grab up some of the meal herself, unwilling to taste the flesh before her guests.

"When is your birthday Gideon? Perhaps we should have a meal that day too. With all your brothers and sister, and Bris. A big celebration maybe?" Gideon had a lot of family in the pack, and his birthday was also that of his siblings. They could have a real celebration then, but she was not displeased with her own. Turning to Saluce, she smiled, trying to draw him into the conversation. "Saluce, how old are you?" The girl had never asked, and wondered now. How many years had her teacher been on this earth?

It seemed as though Naryu and Saluce where almost kindred spirits because he wasn’t an idle conversation person. Only when he drank and he only did that very sparingly. So he was content to watch the two younger wolves have their merry exchange all the while he sat comfortably silent. He wanted to ask Gideon some questions hoping he’d be in good spirits to answer them in a friendly manner. Gift giving was a human tradition but he supposed her version of a birthday celebration sounded right. On their birthday they would hunt for others as a gift for their friends and a example of their rite of passage. Truthfully Nayru had surpassed his expectations and she didn’t need to prove anything else to him anymore.

He grabbed a piece of flesh with his teeth and then back to his seat to eat, not feeling much like expelling the energy to shift into a more fitting form to eat cooked meat. His nose didn’t pick up much in the way of spices and he was happy to realize that. Spices only took away from the flavor of the meat itself.

Her question made his ears perk up atop of his head, how old was he. It was a good question and he had to think about it. Finally he remembered his birth date and remembered that he had forgot it this year. He wasn’t as old as he felt, nor was he very much in reality their senior much anymore. As time would go on that gap wouldn’t be as big either.

“I’m Three years old, Birthday is in November” he replied quietly to them both, still unable to really add much to their conversation. But he would try.

“I see you figured out to shift back to four legs Gideon, Congratulations” he spoke in a manner slightly praising to him, knowing for a bit he had struggled with it.

He was delighted to hear that some of the deer was to be shared with him; he had been trying to practice his hunting but he felt that it was something that Nayru would always do better than him. That was OK with him, as he was a skilled fisherman, that she could do something better than he could. He just wasn't a naturally born hunter. Gideon enjoyed using human tools too much to be naturally born to hunt. When he wasn't using a bow and arrow to shoot birds down out of the trees he was using his slingshot or some sort of a trap. He caught them in his own way, he supposed, and that was what mattered. Still...that she could bring down a deer alone was impressive. It just brought more to her in his mind, more on the "pro" side.

Lately he had been thinking about the pros and cons to moving nearer to Nayru...or...the eastern side, whichever reason it was. He would be nearer to her and could watch over her like he wanted to, and she had said that he wouldn't be a nuisance. It would do Dahlia good to have another scout on that side to watch out for trouble that came from that end of the territory, as well. On the con side, though, was moving the pups to a part of the territory that they weren't as familiar with. His siblings were beginning to move out of the mansion, but he had the pups with him, which complicated things. He had stayed back with them so far, but as they grew and got older he would be able to be more mobile, perhaps.

"You're an amazing hunter, Nayru." He took a piece of meat for himself, eating it delicately so that he could talk without having to do so around a muzzle full of food. "Uhhh. Spring time!" When the snow would start to melt was when he was born, he remembered his mother having told him. "Four birthdays all at once for me, though, with all my siblings running around" He said, grinning. He considered Nayru a part of the family, so she was automatically invited to family get-togethers and meetings. Gideon had more to talk to her about, mostly about the dark wolf and his travels to other packs in search of her, but he would bring that up a little later.

Saluce commented on the fact that he was back on four legs and the dark male's ears went back slightly before twitching back into place. It was a bit of a sore subject to him, that he had been unable to shift back, and he hadn't exactly wanted Nayru to know about it yet, if at all. "Thanks." That was all he'd say on the matter, and just hope that Nayru didn't ask anything about it. He could have said that he just preferred that form, if he hadn't already told Saluce that he had been stuck in it. "So...any big news with either of you two so far this winter?" He didn't want to awkward-it-up and mention Layla, who had moved into his portion of the house, and wouldn't ask about it outright. Saluce could choose whether he wanted to say anything about that or not.

With satisfaction Nayru watched the two men take their share of the kill. That she could provide meat for them, although unlike most the kills she shared this one hadn’t exactly been slain by her own fangs, meant at lot to the little fey. If she wasn’t actively helping Dahlia de Mai and it’s habitants in some manner than Nayru believed she was hurting them. It was this belief which consumed most her time and left her hunting, patrolling, practicing defense and offensive tactics, scouting and tracking. There was little she would not do to serve Dahlia de Mai and giving them the flesh of her kills was only a small part of it all. Yet it meant more to her then, that day, that Saluce and Gideon had come to her call and that they were the two to break bread with her then.

The ebony boy complimented her then and she only bowed her head, her voice so soft and timid it was no audible but her lips mouthed the words "Thank you." The woman was not embarrassed that Jazper had killed the deer that she had brought down, but she was simply unwilling to accept such high praise with more confidence. Nayru knew she hunted well enough, but she could hunt better. There were still days when the animals she chased got away from her, and though perfection would never be reached she could try. It was hard for the girl to accept anything less when it came to her own abilities. It was hard for her to believe that Conor or Saluce, and especially Gideon, could take pride or find awe in her achievements which were so very few by her own standards.

Gideon’s birthday was in spring, so a ways off and it seemed that Saluce’s had just passed. With her steady crimson gaze she regarded Saluce then, her head tilting in thought as she wrinkled her nose and nearly broke into a smile. The man acted older than he was, three years was young, but perhaps it wasn’t merely his body that aged. Perhaps there was something older, his energy and very being, that surpassed his body in years. That one’s energy existed after their body had expired Nayru couldn’t be sure, but if it did than it was a plausible explanation of the man’s existence. Yet for all these thoughts that came to her then she only broke into a thrilling laugh and smiled warmly at the gruff brute. "You are not so old."

And then she watched as Saluce turned his attentions to Gideon and she could see the discomfort in the boy at his comment. Gideon hadn’t been able to shift? He hadn’t told her that, but she said nothing, merely taking in the man and the younger man’s words, their faces, their emotions as they interacted apart from her for a few moments. It did not last long as Gideon quickly turned the conversation back to them all. Her gentle and musical voice rose, filling the air with the details of the past few weeks that she hadn’t told Gideon or Saluce yet, and perhaps they would find interest in her travels.

"I’ve been to Cercatori D’Arte and Anathema, the two newest packs. I met both of the leaders and they were very kind to me. I’m pleased that it seems both packs won’t be a bother to Dahlia, and especially Cercatori D’Arte. It’s so close to our own borders, but they seem like a peaceful group." Nayru smiled and turned to Saluce, her eyes curious again as to if he had anything to share with the two of them. They didn’t talk much of their doings, for as close as they were it seemed that their daily lives were off limits to one another, a sharp contrast to the relationship Nayru had with Gideon, who it seemed was privy to almost any thought or action Nayru experienced.

Saluce watched Gideon’s reaction with slight interest, the young male was obviously embarrassed and it hadn’t struck him yet that there may be more developing between the two young wolves then just a regular friendship. But it really didn’t matter much, sometime later he’d have to make sure that the younger male knew he was proud of him none the less. Apparently he could fish from what he had heard from time to time and maybe sometime soon he’d have to go ask to learn. But the day they hunted together wasn’t an exercise to bring a deer down; it was an event for them to learn to work together. He took instruction well then, and Saul had preformed admirably as well, Layla had been the only wild tangent among them. So far he was satisfied and proud of the two brothers, they each had their own quirks and they would become good comrades as they grew up.

“A lot can happen in a year. You were born, weren’t even able to open your eyes, you grew up, learned to shift, can now hunt on your own, all in a year Nayru” he said comically to the woman. It was true, they live a quick and fast life, better learn quick or you wouldn’t survive long. But he guessed further explanation should be warranted as he listened to her recount the events lately in her life. The question was asked and he was ready with an answer as well.

“Saul has been working more and more on his own at my Shop. Someday soon I think I’ll task him with crafting his own sword. I haven’t seen him in a few days, since I returned but I think he’s been working on making his own Bow, which will lead to making a crossbow. As far as I go, I’ve been around, scoped out Inferni, and wandered a bit. Trying to work through my own problems”he left the other part blank, his failed marriage and his inner demons weren’t something to utter in this setting. Finally the dark grey male rested a little easier in his posture.

“I can’t remember what I was doing on my first birthday. Probably getting into trouble with my former teacher or chasing women. Usually trouble and women went hand in hand thou” He said casually. They where old enough now for him to start speaking to them as he would someone around his age, they would probably find out soon enough that he was no angel.

He was surprised that more wolves hadn’t come to celebrate Nayru’s birthday. Come on; didn’t the rest of the pack realize how awesome and important she was? She was starting to get a little higher in the ranks, as well. Didn’t they notice that? Perhaps Gideon was biased because of his own friendship with her. Maybe more wolves would come by after Gideon and Saluce left.

Nayru spoke of her adventures outside of the territory. Gideon wondered what these other packs were like; he hadn’t been outside of Dahlia very much and didn’t leave very often or for long periods of time. ”How far away were they?” He asked curiously. He was glad that the leaders of the other packs had been good to her. He would have had to go over there and see for himself if they had been mean.

Saluce didn’t speak about the shifting any more, turning his attention to Nayru instead. Gideon gave a small sigh of relief. He heard the news of what his brother was up to and didn’t say much to it, listening to what else the older male had to say. Saluce had been chasing women on his first birthday? He hadn’t given much thought to chasing women; he was too busy taking care of Melee and Range to care much for that kind of thing yet.

The conversation between the three seemed to come easier now and Nayru smiled at her two gentlemen. Still intently but furtively she watched the men's faces, their exchanges both verbal and nonverbal. The cow patterned woman could sense that something unspoken still lingered between them, though of what nature the girl couldn't guess. And then it seemed to pass and Nayru let it be, for if they did not make it so it was truly none of her concern. Instead she diverted her full attention to their words again, attending to each thought individually and turning their meanings over in her mind. Saluce spoke more than Gideon now, and it seemed that if one male was open and expressive the other took his turn being passive and listening. Yet she did not mind, so long as silence didn't plague them.

"Yes, much can happen in one year. I wonder then, would it be a blessing or a curse to know what's to come in the year ahead for all of us?" As always her voice was light and teasing, barely audible above the crackling fire or the breathing of her two companions. Yet her crimson eyes scanned each of their faces to see how seriously they took her inquiry. Could one's future be known? It was impossible, surely, but so much had happened in the first year of her life Nayru couldn't help but imagine all the good and bad that would rain down upon her and the others in the year to come. Dahlia de Mai seemed stable enough, their core members persisted, at least in Nayru's opinion. Yet some came and went and would any of them be among those that went? The idea was heartbreaking to her, to imagine and of them, or Conor and Bris, among those that did not make it through the next year and Nayru resolved not to worry over it. Breaking her own thought with an amused and girlish giggle she dismissed the idea. "But we can't know, so let's not bother wondering."

Saluce spoke of Saul and Nayru wondered if Gideon's brother had heard her call. She would have liked his company among them, but only she smiled at Saluce and said "Does Saul know how to use a bow and arrow? Or do you? I would like to learn, and I feel I am apt enough with my dagger to permit some new time training with another weapon." Yes, a bow and arrow would certainly be beneficial, but she hadn't much time to think over it as Saluce continued to speak of Inferni and his own demons. Whatever they had been, the demons that had chased the warrior out from Dahlia de Mai, Nayru preferred to skip over them and answer Gideon's question then. "Ah, Anathema is further out, they've laid claim to a portion of the mountains just south of Inferni. The other pack though has sprung up right alongside of us, just west. Very close." A sweet smile was offered to Gideon, who was always friendly and kind, and a more knowing look to Saluce, who warrior that he was, would have understood Nayru's need to investigate so close a neighbor.

The tone Saluce took, friendly and adult, did not surprise Nayru, although the man had never spoke so informally towards her before. Exactly how to respond to his casual comment, as truthful as it may have been, Nayru did not know and Gideon seemed to choose not to respond to it at all. Chasing woman? The terminology was foreign to the girl, though the implication was easily enough derived. Saluce of course did not mean it in such a literal sense, but perhaps he meant only he was doing what he did with Layla, or rather the precursor to what he did with Layla. It was perhaps how he had gotten Layla. Chasing woman. Nayru only raised her eyes, wondering why that was something to share, for she had no interesting in chasing anyone. Yet his words brought someone else forth to her mind and almost with a sigh but not quite she spoke, soft and more thoughtful then if it was possible. "I would what my sisters are doing for their first birthday."

He only chuckled softly, at the conversation. All valid points but he found talking with Gideon hard, it seemed as if some wall had been put up between the two males and he had an idea what it was and there was really nothing he could do about it. What was done was done and he had no intention of bringing that issue up here.

“I know the basics, Bow’s weren’t something I trained with often. I may take it up though, and your welcome to come learn with me. I gave Saul the task to let him learn on his own, as you know, I don’t idly give someone something to do or give them a question that isn’t a test” he answered her question with a soft chuckle returning to his lips. This was one of the first times he’d talked with Nayru on somewhat equal terms without the worry of Superior and Submissive, Teacher and Student. It was nice for a change to not have to keep up some sort of social hierarchy.

His frame suddenly moved back up onto all fours to stretch his limps out, his eyes looked over at Gideon for a moment trying to figure what he might be thinking, before sitting back down to look over the hostess for the evening. Nayru was his proudest achievement in some respects, what he wasn’t she was. Where he was brash and loud she was quiet and unassuming, whatever poor soul ever eventually pissed her off would do well to escape with their lives.

Saluce knew the reasoning behind visiting the new packs, especially the new one. He hadn’t had a chance to assess them yet but soon he’d drag his grumpy ass down there and see what they were about.
“I worry about a pack so close to ours.” He added quietly, almost absentmindedly, he was never to good on keeping a lot of his thoughts quiet when it came to things that he deemed where a thorn in his side.

The word 'sister' rung through his ears and his eyes came up to stare at Nayru once more. He had tried to make a habit of not staring at her, not wanting to make her feel weird, but now he had a reason to. Gideon had always wondered about her family but hadn't pushed her on the subject; he didn't speak of his mother very often and didn't ask that others divulge that kind of information to him. "Probably not having as good a birthday as you are, here with your pack." He spoke.

Saluce's words about the achievements of his brother bored the male and he didn't respond to that, continuing to look at Nayru. Gideon was skilled at fishing...that was good enough for him for now. He didn't want a teacher or figure of authority to have to look up to at this point in his life. "If they're peaceful then I don't worry about them. But if they start trouble, then we should watch out for 'em."

Nayru was a little disappointed to learn Saluce did not know how to use a bow and arrow, and neither then did Saul. Although they could learn on their own Nayru did not comment on Saluce's words, only nodded her head with that slight smile of her's while she wondered where she could find a skilled teacher. Someone to show her the proper form and how to hold the bow and all the things that should could learn by trial and error but that would be easier to practice and shape if someone showed her first. Yet, the weight of the dagger strapped to one ankle was a constant reminder of this, she didn't really need to know how to use a bow and arrow. There was reason enough not to cross her.

For as silent as she had been when Saluce spoke of Saul and bows, Nayru said nothing to Gideon when he commented on her sisters. Were they celebrating? Did they even remember what the day was? Were her parents with them, all together as a family should be? Were they wondering about her? What she was doing and who she was with and what she was thinking about? Did she exist to them at all anymore? Did it matter? Deciding that it didn't matter, for even if she could know there was nothing she could do with that knowledge, she only turned her smile upon Gideon and remained quiet.

The talked turned back to the packs, and specifically their nearest neighbor. Despite her words Saluce was full of doubt and worry over the pack being so close, but Gideon, bless his heart, was optimistic as ever. Yet neither male had gone to meet the pack, and least of all the leader who led the pack. If anything Shawchert was more open and friendly than Naniko had been. The white woman had been kind enough, but reserved and a little gruff and if she meant all the words she said the black and white girl wasn't one hundred percent sure. Nayru usually could read others better than they often knew themselves, she had seen Shawchert with those knowing eyes even if she could not see Naniko so clearly, and she felt they had nothing to worry with the new pack to the west. "They won't cause trouble." And that was all she said.

He took both of their answers In stride. He’d probably do his own investigating but he’d take Nayru’s word on the close packs proximity to their own. For a brief moment he sat quietly looking at the fire, blues glinting in the reflected light before his body seemed to have a fit from sitting so long without a movement.

The great dark gray male let out a yawn of contentment, before finding another piece of food and eating it without much thought of politeness. There was more than enough meat for the three of them to share, so he didn’t ponder much on if he looked like a hoarder or not. Eyes looked to the others wondering if they would continue to eat as well, it didn’t look as if anyone else would be joining them tonight.

His eyes looked over at Gideon and a question was asked “How are your adopted children doing Gideon?” he had never once asked the male about them and it seemed like a friendly enough atmosphere that such a question could be asked. Plus he was genuinely interested at least in the affairs of Sauls brother. Nayru would certainly know a great deal more about them he gathered.

End soon? :3

He wasn't sure what to say to the large male before him. He kept quiet, watching the other two interact and chewing on a piece of meat, jaw working in steady motion. The deer was good, very good. He would have to work on hunting deer himself in the next few weeks. Gideon wanted to become higher in the pack and hoped to achieve the Jager or Jager Fuhrer rank eventually, maybe permanently. He enjoyed fishing and providing food for the pack.

Saluce asked about his children and he swallowed the piece of gristle that he had been working on. His ear flicked back in a small reaction to the word "adopted", as he considered them his children whether they were adopted or not, but he answered the question. "Melee and Range are doing well. Growing up too fast, I think...but I think they'll both become adults who will contribute a lot to the pack. Speaking of them, though, I should probably get back." His out, perhaps. Saluce could remain to speak to Nayru if he wanted to.

OMG. Let's wrap this up. My last post. You can post once more or not Matt! thanks guys! <3

Cherry eyes continued to scrutinize her guests as they interacted, her presence merely facilitating the event rather than being the event. They were both there for her, but it was the interaction between the two that interested her more than their interaction with her. So often a silent creature, her retreat with words did not seem to be noted by either males, and it was not long before Gideon excused himself. Bowing her head low to the boy, her voice was barely there as she bid him goodbye. "Thanks for sharing my meal Gideon." It was right he should return to Range and Melee. Nayru found no despair at his departure, knowing well enough that his absences in her life, no matter how long they could be, were temporary.

Alone with Saluce she chewed slowly in silence, not caring that no words passed between them. Only when she was sure Gideon was gone and out of earshot did she speak, though even if he had been lingering her soft voice never carried farther than a few feet at most. "And thank you for sharing this meal as well, Saluce." Eyes that had not met his just then lifted, and she titled her head, considering the man for a moment before speaking again. "And for everything else." So much of herself had come from him, but the time was nearing that teacher and student were more on equal ground, there was less for Saluce to give and less for Nayru to take and the girl wasn't sure how their relationship would change in the next year, but she was sure it would in one way or another.
