It was enough to know that his niece had established ties with the pack to their east, but now to find that they had been so bold as to slaughter a child had enraged him. Restraint had kept him from marching there that day, demanding blood for blood. Restraint had allowed him to bury the boy and offer his soul what little peace he could. While Gabriel was a patient man, his patience had been worn thin by attacks on all sides. They did not need to come at him with fangs for the Inferni leader to know what his underlings and those outside of his borders did. Had he not learned to destroy these unseen enemies as they came, he would have fallen to them. Gabriel, though, was a patient man—and a man who was full of pent-up violence.

He had brought his mother not as a show of force, but of his restraint. One poor old woman, covered in scars and made weak by the winter. Gabriel had considered bringing others, but he trusted so few these days—Enkiel he would have brought, but the healer-jackal’s size was an obvious weakness he could not show. What trust he had for Samael’s daughter was slowly evaporating, for he had used her scent trail to find the pack. While she had made her position to Kaena clear, Gabriel could not put his faith in those who had done nothing for him. She was yet a child, and yet swayed when there was talk of greater things. Again, and sourly, he wished his son within Inferni’s borders. At least he knew that his son would never turn his back on Inferni. Not when he had scars to prove it.

His paws, the no-color of rain, brought him to a halt at the borders of the pack. They lived in the shadow of the mountain, as did Inferni, and another Gabriel might have sought to find allies in them. No more. A snarl crossed his features as he scented the leaders, recognizing the one for who she was. Naniko had once attempted to form a friendship with his pack, but it was her arrogant mate that had received the brunt of Gabriel’s wrath. He did not find it surprising that she was still power-hungry. Briefly, he considered going to speak with Anu about the woman to find what it was he would be dealing with, and decided to do so after he had confronted the bitch.

Smoothing his fur down as best he could, Gabriel spared a glance at his aging mother and silently hoped she could keep her tongue in check. Then he turned forward and let out a wolfish howl. It did not request, but demanded the presence of the white-furred woman. Someone had to answer for her peons, and he would see to it she was aware of such responsibility.
