indentHe awoke to the acrid taste of smoke.

indentChoking and coughing, he scrambled to his feet and roughly shoved the shoulder of his brother, Nikolaos, who was sleeping beside him. His darker-complexioned brother didn't need the extra awakening — he was also beginning to cough and gasp through the thickening screen of smoke. Rhyme and reason was not needed in this situation, for what they were to do was clear: escape. Ari roughly grabbed his older brother's wrist, leading him out of their shared home and into Jaded Shadows. The smoke had been carried to them on the wind, but the flames and fury were quickly baring down. Releasing his brother and putting a free hand over his nose to shield the smoke from it, he looked to his brother. Nikolaos' dark brown eyes watched him impassively, and they both nodded mutually. Neither could compute what this would mean in the future, but they needed to get out before they could contemplate that.

indentThey made a dash to the northern edges of Jaded Shadows, which was furthest away from the oncoming flames. Several times they saw creatures — lupine and not — scrambling in the same direction, which was a small indication that they were not rushing into their doom. Still, panic and fear flooded into all of his senses, heightening them in a bittersweet turn-around. Soon enough they had circumnavigated the Jaded Shadows mountain and were on the northern fringes, beginning to head towards the mountains that separated Bleeding Souls from the lands beyond. Lands that, to both of their fear, were on the path back to a home that wanted them dead.

indentLuckily for them, the escapade to the mountains was mainly uneventful. Both ended up collapsing on the rocky slope, gasping for air and purging their lungs from the clinging smoke. Ari wiped his eyes with the heel of his hand, getting rid of the debris that had caught in them, and gasped out words, "How much is burning?" Nikolaos drug himself to his feet, coughing into the crook of his arm, and looked out over the burning lands. "All of it," he said breathlessly, dropping back down into a sitting position again. "Well, this sucks," he went on, coughing violently once more. Ari could only nod.

indentWhat was really prevalent in the near-yearling's mind was how he was supposedly cursed. Did his mother really call it? Did he really bring this here? It could, of course, simply be a totally natural (yet devastating) event totally unrelated to him, but... there was still that off chance. He choked a sob, biting the side of his lip to keep himself from crying. His life had simply been skipping from bad to worse. "Where do we go?" he asked, once more getting rid of debris — along with tears — from his eyes. Nikolaos surveyed the land once more, noticing figures scrambling into the mountains, and then ended up saying, "Into the mountains, I'd assume."

indentBoth of them were speechless with the implications.

Waking up had been a blur. It was instinct that kicked in that told her to get away from whatever was harming the land. Her motherly instinct, however, told her to find Beppe. He had not been there when she woke up from her nap, but she called him several times and tried to follow his scent. When she caught it, it threw her off guard because of the smoke inhaling into her lungs and disabling her for a moment. Several times she called his name until she was unable to stay any longer before it was getting difficult to breathe and see. At one point she collapsed, pain in her leg and lungs and eyes and any other part of her body that would take in the smoke.
Later did her Fight option in her Fight or Flight process kick in and she got herself up and, ignoring the pain in her body, kept going. Her screams for her son would fluctuate from whispers to screams until she was in the clear. Coughing and shaking herself of debris and ash and smoke, she tried to find the scent for her son when she heard voices. Rubbing her nose and quickly walking into an area of safety, she heaved. "Beppe?!" she shouted a final time before stopping for a rest.

indent"Beppe?!"

indentThe name, albeit it rang not to Nikolaos, made Ari jolt upwards. Memories of his meeting of the other on the beach and them getting out of the thunderstorm weeks before flashed behind his eyelids when he blinked, and he felt the obvious pull to go to the source of the sound. Even though it was in the midst of the oncoming flames. "We must help," Ari murmured, getting up and disappearing toward the smoldering catastrophe of embers and smoke. "What?" cried an exasperated Nikolaos, but Ari was already gone.

indentThe source of the cry was a dark woman, low to the ground and heaving for breath. Ari's memory rang with the thought that this was Beppe's mother. Despite the fact that a sour taste remained in his mouth of his own mother, Beppe seemed to love her dearly and she must care for him if she were to call for him so. Therefore he felt it absolutely necessary to help her however he could. She moved to her side, kneeling. "Ma'am," he murmured, to get her attention, "We need to get out of here before the fire catches up. I can help you find Beppe, too." At this point Nikolaos jogged from where they had came, looking impassively between his brother and the stranger. He went to her other side, ready to help as well. She had been exposed to the flames and smoke far longer than them, so they had the power to help her further into the mountains and into safety.

indentThe bad side of it was that they didn't know if they would find Beppe there or not.

Her hands gripped the ground, pulling up dirt. It was overwhelming. The smoke and ash was hurting her inside and out and her leg was throbbing. She was scared for her own safety, but most of all for Beppe's. What if he was back there still? What if she run off, thinking she was going the right thing by going after him and he was still back there? The thought made her shutter just as someone approached, her body jerking in response. His words barely registered and she squinted at him. "Know my son?" she choked out, almost blurting Italian but tried for her choppy English, even in time of panic. Trying to breathe, she came to stand. "Have to find!" she shouted and looked to the other canine, fear shaking her body. He said he would help her, though, and deciding it was best to put what trust she had in the boy, she shook her hands slightly and moved forward. "Us go," she mumbled and headed forward. Her body weak, everything harder than normal, but she had to get through this. She had to find him.

indentAri jerked a nod to her, acknowledging that he, indeed, knew her son. Nikolaos, on the other hand, did not. He looked curiously at his brother — paranoia ran strong in their family, and normally they did not offer help to others so readily — and decided that this would be his fight to fight. The older Sohs stood, looking to his brother over his shoulder, and said, "I'll scout up ahead and find us a safe path. You help her." Ari couldn't help but smile dangerously at his brother as he ran off. Ah, that was Nikolaos — he always had to be the one who gave the commands.

indentThe former Jaded Shadows member scrambled forward as who he imagined was Beppe's mother lurched towards the mountains. Yes, they had to find Beppe, but Ari could only imagine he had made it out. To Ari, getting out would be the first step to finding Beppe. To be pessimistic, there was no escape for Beppe if he had been caught by the flames. The best course of action would be to escape, hope he had made it, and then find him on the other side. Nevertheless, that would probably scare the living daylights from the frightened mother, so Ari kept to her side, keeping an arm out for her to take if she stumbled. She was weak from the flames and smoke, and injured, from what he could tell. Not a good combination. It was a wonder she'd made it this far. "Let's go after my brother, okay? I'm sure we'll find Beppe along the way."
