Snow slowly fell down from the sky above landing on the snow that had landed the night before. There was a good five inches now and the day was promising more. It seemed that every time Valkyrie showed up it was snowing or there was snow already on the ground, but she had grown up here, so it didn’t bother her much. The prey, however, hid whenever it showed up and they seemed harder to catch then last year. Valkyrie was under weight and skinner then she had ever been. She could blame the winter and her poor decision to become a loner for this. Less the two feet away from her was a skull, a wolf skull, and she was well aware that it marked the end of the free lands and the beginning of the Inferni lands. It didn’t scare her much. She had been around them as a pup and the scariness just seemed to fade away with time. She still found the act of setting skulls up at the border disgusting, though, and thought it was highly unnecessary. Maybe that was just because she was on the other side of the skulls this time.

She shifted slightly from foot to foot as she tried to stay warm in the cold, morning air. It was cold, well under freezing, and she was beginning to catch cold and her clothing was helping much. She was in her optime form and, as always, was wearing her simple light brown dress that hung loosely around her legs. It wasn’t made to keep you warm and was simply for looks, but it was the only thing she was able to find since most were out looking for there on clothing this time a year. Since her dress couldn’t protect her from the snow, she would have to hope that behind that border there was empty shelter. She didn’t care whether it was a cave or house as long it was warm and clear of snow and the faster she could get to it was better. She raised her head towards the sky and howled calling for anyone in the pack.

Yippee! Big Grin (326)

Hybrid supposed that with all of the patrolling of the borders he did, he was bound to find someone lurking about eventually. It had been a few days now since his scuffle with the Anatheman wolf and he had been none too pleased to discover she had come from a newly-formed pack all the way to Inferni just to hassle him. What kind of pack were they running anyway? He had seethed over this enough and he tried to put it at the back of his mind. He needed to devote a bit of his concentration to patrolling lest a newcomer decide to jump out of nowhere and attack him. He didn't have too much faith in neither wolves nor newcomers. Both posed a whole array of problems and he honestly didn't like dealing with either of them.

Hybrid paused when he heard a howl rise from the borders. He sighed and decided to head toward the sound knowing well that it was his duty as the pack Tessarius. As he neared the borders, he considered the howl; it certainly sounded familiar and he knew where he had heard it many times. But somehow, he couldn’t figure it out. Who was it? He quickened his pace; his curiosity now peaked, wondering who might be waiting for him – and Inferni – on the other side of the borders.

When he arrived, he saw what looked to be his daughter in a dirty human garb. He frowned, immediately displeased she had taken to wearing discards and remnants of humanity. Had she no pride? He shook his head in despair, but nonetheless trotted closer to meet her. He had never really spent any time with his daughter, so he didn’t know what he should say. He supposed he could treat her like any other joiner, but even then, he rarely interacted with joiners. He usually only found the annoying trespassers.

“What are you doing back here?” he asked at last.

She didn’t have to wait long for someone to show up, but the wolf who showed up surprised her. She watched as her father walked up to meet her eyes full of surprise and maybe even a little happiness. She hadn’t seen her father in a year and even before that she didn’t really have a good relationship with him. She had always wanted to get to know him and actually be able to call him her father, but she found that he was distant and unreachable bring up walls that no one seemed to be able to get through. Her and him were complete opposites. While she was often carefree, kind, and gentle he was blood thirsty, ruthless, and unpredictable and it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out. None of his personality had rubbed off on her when she was young and impressionable. That could be because they didn’t hang out or maybe she just didn’t receive any of his personality genes.

A she approached she crouched slightly and lowered her ears. Even though she was only had a small amount of wolf blood running through her veins, her wolf instinct seemed to scream at her in situations like this and she found that it was hard to ignore it. She wasn’t, however, submitting like a wolf would, she was still coyote. She knew some members of the clan expected joiners to submit and some found it as a signs of weakness and disliked it. She knew her father disliked wolves like most in the Inferni and hoped he disliked there traditions too. When he reached her the silence seemed to last forever, but finally he spoke. His words weren’t the friendliest, but at least he wasn’t completely unfriendly. The answer to his question was simple, but she was still surprised that it was her father that had come to answer her howl.

“I want to be accepted back into the pack” she said “I shouldn’t have left before, but I was young and didn’t know any better.” She wished he would understand that she was almost a year older then when she left last and that she had grown up a lot since then. She had seen a lot of the lands east of here and had met a lot of interesting wolves and coyotes alike. It that short period of time she had grown up and was a woman now not a girl like she once was.

Grr mean Hybrid grr. :< (231)

Hybrid flicked his ears forward to better hear her as she spoke. He frowned, wondering when his daughter had started calling Inferni a pack. It had always been and would continue to be a clan, no matter how much time she had spent frolicking with the wolves. Apparently a number of the new alleged Lykois had spent some time with wolves. It was bad enough they were peace-loving yuppies. He just didn’t want anyone with his blood to put on such a horrible show. Even if he had never considered Valkyrie his daughter, he still expected certain things from her.

“You’re still young,” he replied gruffly. If she thought a few more months would make her somehow more ‘grown up’ she was mistaken. He couldn’t really say if he had matured much – indeed, he hadn’t known her before and could not compare her with a previous memory. So, he just waited; watching and wondering to see if she had anything else to say. No, he had something to say first. He frowned and added: “why should I let you back here?” He didn’t really care either way. He hadn’t wanted her in the first place and she hadn’t turned out anything like he would have thought. After all, what kind of monster had a child that was full of love and peace? It just didn’t make sense. He didn’t like it.

Did she wish she knew her father better? Yes, in a way she did. It would be nice to have a fatherly figure in her life and someone she could run to when she needed help. Then again, she doubted Hybrid could provide much support even if they were close. He seemed the type to expect for you to be able to do everything he could even if you were less experienced. She would be better off finding someone else to play the fatherly figure. Hybrid was, however, her ‘real’ father and she could not change that. He was being unfriendly, though, especially when he spoke. It was true that she was still young, but couldn’t one be grown and mature past there years. Age was just a number that people used to try to measure your maturity, but the trust was that most canines where either more mature or less mature. No one fit in to there age exactly and no one was expected to really. How mature you were depended on your experiences so far in life not your age.

The question ‘why should I let you back here’ was a little more complicated then the last question he asked. He could be looking for a lot of different answers like her skills, why she won’t leave again, or why HE should let her in. “I have learned how to navigate by either rivers or the stars and can track prey movement.” She had learned both these skills from the group of travellers she had stayed with. They could navigate the toughest terrain by simply using the stars and could track the herds of animals by scent and foot prints. They had taught some of what they had known to her and she had used that knowledge to get back to souls alive, so she had a little experience using it too.

Big Grin! (286)

He didn’t know what he could do; he didn’t know what he should do; it was a confusing, vicious cycle. If she had been a trespasser, the answer would have been quite clear. But since she was a former member of Inferni – and his daughter – he had to afford her a bit of his time. But what the do you say to the daughter you’ve said nothing to? Hybrid didn’t know. He was all action and movement, not words and thoughts. He didn’t have time for this; he never did and he hated how it made him feel. He felt the aggression in his blood calling to him to just leave and do what he knew was right. This was unnatural for him; he wasn’t a family man at all.

But at the least, he was a clanmember. He would at least treat her like any other clanmember he didn’t hate. Maybe like Kesho – wait, no, not exactly like Kesho. Maybe like Halo. Yes, he could tolerate her every so often.

He huffed in reply when she named some new skills, trying to sound unimpressed. He didn’t know what the stars had to do with anything, but he supposed it might be worth something. It sounded like a joke, but Hybrid didn’t say anything. He just kept frowning, trying to figure out if she was making a joke. When no laugh came, he assumed she was being serious.

“Well,” he replied, “I guess I’ll call Gabriel.” With that, he tipped his head back and sent out a loud, rousing call to either Gabriel or Kaena – either leader would suffice. He just wanted to get this over with and go back to dealing with things he understood.

(Word Count: 303)

The silence returned after her words reached the air. They really didn’t have much to stay, did they? They didn’t have much in common or anything they both enjoyed to talk about. She was a peace loving coyote and he was a battle hardened, bloodthirsty coyote. If someone was on the outside looking in at the situation they might even think they were simply past clanmates and nothing else. Moments later he spoke, his words brushing against her ear. It seemed as if he really didn't know what he was doing and was new to this process. He was hesitant with his actions and words seeming to second guess himself. She couldn't blame him. He was more the type to deal with trespassers not joiners. She watched as he broke eye contact and left his head towards the sky. A loud howl pierced the air. She wouldn't be surprised if it was heard for miles. She knew some how, way back, Gabriel was related to her, but it might be to far back for it to really count. She was related to most of the coyotes in Inferni and was related to some in many different ways thanks to the inbreeding.

After the howl had died down she perked her ears searching for that noise that meant Gabriel's arrival. "How have things been here?" she asked. The only thing her and her father really had in common was that they did, or once did, live in Inferni and she was curious about what had happened while she was gone. Had they won the war or were they defeated? Was there a change of leadership or was it the same as before. Her father was the only one around to answer her questions at the moment and she was more then happy to ask them.

Hybrid’s call roused Gabriel from the remains of a small meal. He left the scraps for the already circling ravens and moved towards the source quickly. It surprised him when he spotted the pair, whom barely looked related due to the girl’s odd markings. It had been Gabriel who had first realized who the child’s father was, and even now that truth seemed laughable. Hybrid was not the fathering type. Still, she was family—another link to the Massacre bloodline that had all but vanished in these parts.

The coy-wolf came up to Hybrid’s side, but did not look at him nor give any indication he was aware of his presence. This was very much the way the two behaved. Gabriel had made a point to display his dominance over Hybrid since the day he had been forced to beat some sense into his thick head. By repeating himself, the coyote would remember. It was the girl that interested him, with her still too-large ears and petite body. How much she was build like her mother. “Valkyrie,” he greeted her. “What brings you back here?” A subtle charge. Gabriel too, felt the bitterness of abandonment.

He didn’t like this feeling and he didn’t like feeling like Valkyrie had noticed, too. He didn’t know much about her and she him, but he felt like she had picked up on his hesitation. Generally he would just grumble and scowl at his clanmates until they left him alone, but given that she was both a rejoiner and his daughter, it seemed somewhat inappropriate.

His frown remained once he glanced back after finishing his howl. She perked her ears and Hybrid’s scowl deepened. What the hell was she so excited about? He didn’t appreciate her pizzazz or love of life – it was just plain irritating. Hybrid narrowed his eyes, trying to figure out what was going on in that head of hers. It must not have worked, for after a few seconds of staring through slitted lids, all he got was a bit of a headache. He just didn’t get it.

When she asked how things had been, Hybrid grunted in surprise. He shrugged and then made another noncommittal noise in response.

“Same as always. Wolves trespass, I chase ‘m away.” He remembered his encounter with Silas and the black wolf from the mountain pack and decided to amend his previous statement. “There’s a new pack on the mountain ‘n they’re not too friendly. Watch out for them. Same goes for Silas. He’s an idiot.” And then again, a glance away. He was content with letting this conversation lapse into uncomfortable silence while they waited for a leader – it didn’t matter to Hybrid anyways. It wasn’t like he’d be able to say much.

Gabriel’s arrival was a much-needed relief from this confusing web of social interaction. Hybrid let out a long whoosh of breath he’d been holding in anticipation. He flicked his right ear as Gabriel trotted up beside him, but remained still when the Aquila spoke. Clearly, Gabriel didn’t need anything; he was there for Valkyrie and he would know what to do.

She nodded to hybrid acknowledging his words, as Gabriel came to Hybrid’s side. She slowly lowered herself. This was the Aquila of the clan, no one was more powerful then him. She had met him once or twice and she may even be able to call him a friend, but he was still the Aquila and he was to be respected. He was clearly ignoring Hybrid and she wouldn't be surprised if there had been a disagreement of some sort between them. She knew her father could easily get himself on someone's bad side. Only seconds after his arrival Gabriel spoke. His words were friendlier then her fathers, but still held a bit of bitterness in them. He was upset that she had left, wasn't he. She shouldn't have left and she knew that now, but she was still accountable for her actions and had to accept that many coyotes were going to give her the cold shoulder for awhile. Leaving was not something she completely regretted. If she wouldn't have left she would never know the skills the travelers taught her or met the coyotes and wolves she met. She did regret not giving any warning and just getting up and leaving.

She lowered her ears back in a silent apology before speaking. "I'm sorry about leaving, and I want to be accepted back into the clan." Her answer was short and sweet clearly answering his question and more. She was more mature then she had been, a lady, and she was ready to take on the responsibility of being in a clan brought you. She was ready to become someone you could trust to get the job done and not flee at the first sign of danger.

A thousand people had come and gone before her and more would follow suit. Coyotes were made to wander, but that did not make their unannounced departures any better. To shelter and feed so many only to watch them vanish without a trace showed nothing but disrespect to clan. Gabriel had learned to deal with this, but it did not change the bitterness of such a betrayal. However, he understood when it came to children—his own had proven they needed to leave as much as any other coyote.

The girl looked apologetic, and she sought to return home. Fair enough. Gabriel looked at her for a long time in silence. “I will not turn away blood,” he said, as if this was an undeniable fact. Vitium had been different; he was no longer considered a Lykoi. “You will start as a Tirones, and if you have any useful skills, you will be able to progress in our ranks. I would suggest,” he added, tone firming. “That if you plan to stick around you do so. I’m sure you and your father,” a peculiar shift in tone came, almost as if it was a secret order to the man at his side. “, have much to discuss. I’ll leave her to you,” Gabriel finished, looking to Hybrid. With that, he was off.

Hybrid found himself smirking when Gabriel arrived, but tried to hide his smugness. He didn’t think he did this too well, since it felt so good to not be the only one who resented something – he wasn’t sure what yet – about his daughter. Hybrid guessed Gabriel was tired of everyone coming and going, but Hybrid was just fed up with all the movement in general. Coyotes should just stay where they belonged and mind their place in Inferni. He didn’t think Gabriel would have such a stark view of the lives they should lead within the clan, but Hybrid didn’t mind. Knowing Gabriel shared some of his sentiments made it easier to live with them.

Hybrid flicked his ears from Valkyrie to Gabriel once the Aquila spoke. Gabriel sounded like he had received her request well enough and punctuated it with an immediate acceptance. Hybrid recognized the importance of blood. Sometimes, he suspected the blood itself was more important than the individual who bore it. He supposed this was doubly true for Valkyrie. He didn’t know her, but he knew there was a bit of himself – and the de le Poer genes – in her.

Hybrid frowned when Gabriel switched his attention to Hybrid and his relationship with his daughter. What was there to discuss? She had left, she had returned, and Hybrid would resume his border patrols. There wasn’t much to discuss as far as Hybrid could tell, unless she had news of… well, nothing, really. There wasn’t anyone he’d care to know about that lived beyond the bounds of Inferni. Hybrid watched Gabriel depart with a sour expression on his face. He felt like he was being forced to hold some conversation of social pleasantries and niceties with a female he barely knew.

“Well,” Hybrid began. “I better get back to work.” He shrugged and then turned to trot away.

(Word Count-363)

About a year ago she had dreamed of running off and exploring farther then she had before, but, after traveling for about a year, she was ready to settle down and never travel again. The first month she traveled it was fun and enjoyable, but after that she was tired of moving every day and being in a new den every night. She continued to travel, however, since she had already told the group she would stick with them awhile. She didn't really regret traveling, since she had seen a lot of new places, learned a few new skills, and meet some interesting wolves and coyotes. The travelers she was with taught her something that she had hoped was true for a long time, you didn't have to live everyday scared that someone was going to jump out and hurt you or shed blood every time you saw someone you didn't know instead you could live in peace making more friends then enemies. Maybe she could bring that concept to Inferni.

When her new Aquila finished talking she lowered her head in a silent thank you only raising it again when he was out of sight. Had she ever thought she wouldn't be accepted back? No, not really. She was blood like he had said and no one could change that no matter how much they tried. She really didn't think blood matter that much. Who that person was mattered more, didn't it? Unless, of course, you were direct family like a father and a daughter or a mother and a son. Then you had to try to get along even if you would highly dislike them if you weren't there family.

The next thing that happened truly surprised her. Her father said something short and sweet before turning around and walking away. She had known her father usually did stuff like this, but he had never really done it to her. Well, she wasn't going to let him get away that easily. She walked after him eventually getting next to him. "I'll help you then, so you can get it done faster." She spoke just like she normally would sweet and innocent.

He hadn’t expected her to stop him on his way out. He glanced over his shoulder in an awkward, half-turn position, when he heard her call out. Why would she want to help him patrol? She wasn’t a Vigiles; as far as Hybrid knew, she was probably just a Tirones. She didn’t have to follow him and pester him. Hadn’t he already done his duty alerting Gabriel of the newcomer? He didn’t understand; was this what families did to one another? Pester and harass them? If this was the case, he certainly didn’t want any part of it. He would really just prefer to be left alone in peace and silence to do his job as Gabriel expected. He had taken up a new post as the Tessarius after he had noticed the growing number of wolves frolicking on the borders, and he had been right to do this. With the end of the Second Dahlian War, the only way for him to (legitimately) get his blood was by stalking the borders. He could only hope to find some dull wolves nearby he could slaughter. But with a daughter following him around, he wouldn’t be able to do his job as he would have liked. She would slow him down. She would just be there ; her very presence infuriated him.

“That’s okay,” he replied quickly. “I work better alone.” He began to trot away, hoping she wouldn’t follow him again. It would not work very well for him if she turned out to be persistent. He just wanted to sulk up and down the borders. Why would he want some female, some daughter following him?

She wanted to get to know her father and be able to call him her father. He was her biological father, but he had never really tried to be a father. She wasn't sure why her father hadn't decided to be a father. She wasn't even sure if he knew the answer to that. While she was away she had hoped that when she came back her father would greet her with open arms, but, as you can see, that didn't happen. One could almost say she was rejected and she was close to being rejected by him, but not as much as she could have been. He had done her job and now he was going to leave.

Her eyes watched as he turned responding to her words and her ears twitched as his words brushed across them. As far as she could tell he wasn't lying about working better by himself. He did seem like he was the secretive and silent type, who would rather work alone then in the company of others. If working by himself benefited the clan then who was she to try to take that benefit away by following him. She could deny that it did sound like an excuse to make her stop following him and leave.

"I guess I'll see you around then" She said with a little hint of sadness in her voice. She would see him around, since she was planning on making her home in the caves like he did. She would probably get one facing the beach though, since she did enjoy it and it reminded her of the time when she was younger. With that statement she turned and began making her way into the heart of the Inferni where she would settle and began looking for a place to stay while she tried to pick out her cave.

She seemed to be mulling his comment over in her head. Hybrid had glanced back to see if she was still waiting and saw her silent and still with a rather pensive expression on her face. He shrugged and was about to trot away in silence when she spoke. I guess I'll see you around then, she said, and Hybrid had to pause for a moment to acknowledge that. Good. He would be left alone and to his own devices. He didn't really know what to do with a... a female trailing after him.

He huffed in reply and muttered, “good,” under his breath before he stalked away. Now that that matter of business had been settled, it meant he would be able to continue on with his duties. Although he wasn't too sure what to make of his daughter's return, he supposed he'd reason it out eventually. It couldn't be too hard, after all. She had left and now she was back. He suspected she would abandon her home eventually, too, so it would probably be better if he didn't get too caught up in her return. Maybe he was still bitter from the previous abandonments, from his half-siblings and cousins (all in one) who could have been such great warriors. Or maybe he was just realistic. Either way, he didn't know. He just wanted to get back to work doing what he did know: protecting Inferni.
