Cambria couldn't remember the last time she had ever felt so completely drained. The only time that seemed to come close to this was when she had been recovering from her accident with the white powder when she had been a little pup. The level of depression and despair was not quite there this time around, but she knew that she felt more tired and run down than she had back then. The Marino still wanted to hope that this was all nothing but a bad dream and that she would wake up from it soon, but with each day that passed the reality became inescapable. Her little sister had fallen from the roof of the mansion. She had hit her head, and ever since she had not woken up. The Medicus had trained herself and been trained to heal external and internal injuries, to make someone better when they became ill. She had never been prepared for anything like this though.

It was a godsend to have Amata back who could help her try to figure out what they could do for their little sister, but they both had run out of things to try fairly early on. All they could really do now was to make sure Artemis got her water and what little liquid nourishment they could get her to swallow. The rest was just a waiting game. All they could do was hope and pray that Missa would wake back up. Their mother barely left the room where her sleeping daughter had been placed, constantly watching over her. That was another worry, in her state of distress, her mother had not been taking good care of herself. The cocoa fey had never seen her mother look so frail. She was barely eating, barely sleeping and her ears seemed deaf to any pleas that her two healer daughters made.

Artemis' accident and subsequent condition would have been a hard enough blow, but their adoptive brother had blamed himself for what had happened and had ran away in the middle of the night. Cambria watched as her mother felt the internal battle of wanting to help both her children and being unable to do so. She so wished there was something more that she could do to help. If only she could wake Artemis up...but she couldn't.

It was Cambria's shift to keep an eye on her sister. Finally Savina had fallen asleep out of sheer exhaustion and the slim Marino girl had covered her mother in a blanket carefully. She sat next to her little sister's bedside, her own eyes weary and hollow-looking. Please wake up Artemis...please. The silver-toned girl just lay there though, unchanged. Her breathing was still steady and clear, they could all be thankful for that, at the very least.

+287 Poor Artemis ;-;

Gotham had heard that terrible news. He'd been in his room, dealing with a personal project when the word was spread to him, and since then he'd been meaning to come and visit poor Artemis, but never got the chance to. Being back in the pack meant he had more chores now than ever, especially if he ever wanted a real rank. Still, studies could wait a few hours. Boy was off to see his little sister, in hopes she'd be better by the time he got there.

No such luck. As the Phoenix-named boy came to his sister's room, he found that she was still dead to the world, with Cambria at her bedside looking almost as bad. He stood in the doorway with a grimace, a reflection of the sudden pain in his chest from the sight. For a moment, he hesitated, wondering if it would be such a good idea. What if he made her worse?

Still, he had to at least check on her for himself. The kid there was his little sister, not some random packmate. He came forward, tail limp and ears back. "Artemis..." The first sound since he'd entered the room was a choked whisper as he came up beside Cambria, hands in his pockets. As much as he wanted to greet his other twin, boy couldn't find it in himself to drag his blue eyes off the horrible sight. Artemis had never looked so thin. He'd been gone for months, but those few times he'd been back, he'd seen her, alive and happy, playful and lively. Now... now she just looked dead. Still, her chest rose and fell with every breath. That much was comforting. Maybe she'd wake up.

It would have been horrible for this to happen to anyone, any of her siblings. The fact that it was Artemis almost made it worse though. She had always been so fully of life, almost from the moment she had been born. Cambria remembered holding the newborn girl in her hands. Even that blind, deaf pup had had more life than the form that lay sprawled across the mattress now. Of course they had all feared the day that she would hurt herself; it had only been a matter of time before some grave accident befell her. They had all worried about her, about what she mind accidentally do to herself. Cambi didn't think that in any of their wildest fears they had imagined anything quite so awful though. It was particularly difficult for the Medicus. It was her job to help, to make people better, yet there was nothing she could do for her little sister. Not one thing.

A cream-tipped ear flicked as she heard movement outside the door. Cambria took in the form of her brother for the first time since he had returned. She knew that he had come back, not long after Amata had, but she had had yet to see him due to how busy her duties as a healer were keeping her. He seemed so big now, his build reminding the girl of their father, and yet Gotham seemed perhaps even more muscular. He was one of the few males that did not make apprehension and fear rise up in her chest, and she was glad to see him. If only the circumstances could have been better.

He walked in reverently and looked down upon their slumbering sibling. Cambria looked back to her as well, but nothing had changed. The girl's shoulders were slumped and her own ears were back as the pair looked at sad sight. Hearing Gotham's choked voice nearly brought fresh tears to the Marino's eyes and she felt the full weight of her inability to make Artemis better return to press upon her. "Amata and I have tried everything...I feel so useless..." Unshed tears swam in her sea green gaze. What kind of healer was she when she couldn't even make her little sister wake up?

Cambria hadn't changed too too much. He'd seen her around since coming home, though she'd never noticed him, too busy working. Still, it felt a bit off standing beside her now, and hearing that broken tone in her voice as she spoke. That wasn't like her. None of this made sense now. With a grimace, boy tore his gaze away to look back to his cocoa sister, eyes flickering across her face, then he frowned some.

"Stop that." Something about his voice said he was forcing the lecturing tone out, trying to be the big brother. He was trying so desperately not to show how he felt; like crying, hiding... Rather, he turned his emotions away and forced out some blabber about being a big brother into his head. This of course led to him drawing her up into a hug, frowning all the same though. "It's not your fault. You've tried everything you know of. It's all we can do is to try. Si farà svegliare se è destinato ad essere. Non battere te stesso su di esso." He kept his gaze on the far wall, not daring to look back to his coma-induced little sister. It was just too hard to take in, her appearance, how weak she looked.

Right now, he felt like crying. Like letting go of his strength, that little bit he'd gained on his travels, and just breaking down... but he wouldn't. Boy was the oldest brother, and with that birthright came responsibility, at least in his mind, to watch out for his younger siblings, and protect them the best he could. This was something he felt useless about, so the least he could do was offer some sort of comfort for them... and his mother. Oh gods, poor Savina. She was probably wrecked over this, far worse than the siblings were. How could they possibly get over this, if little Art didn't wake up?

This was the first time that she felt she was truly failing as a healer. Every other time that those inklings of feeling had crept up on her there had been some way for her explain them away. Like when her aunt needed help after Old Red collapsed, she couldn't heal Ghita because she had needed help herself. There were no such excuses she could offer her conscience this time around. It didn't even help that Amata was just as stumped as she was. It was her job to make people better and she couldn't. Even the water and broth she fed Artemis was a paltry effort. Anyone could do that, it didn't take any medical knowledge. She should have been prepared, and she wasn't, and now her little sister was wasting away before all their eyes.

Even though Gotham's voice may not have been as forceful as he may have hoped, she flinched at the words as if she expected to be struck. It was only her frayed nerves talking though, she knew she had nothing to fear from her brother. Cambria was often her own worst enemy. When he pulled her up into a hug, the Marino clung to her brother like her life depended on it, the tears squeezing past the wall she had tried to keep them behind. A soft sob was emitted against her littermate's chest. The girl knew her brother's words were the truth, but it was that unthinkable outcome that terrified her. "What if she doesn't?" she spoke painfully soft, afraid uttering those words too loud would make it true. What would happen if Artemis didn't wake up, only slowly withered away into death? What would happen to their family, to each of them? Would they ever be able to get over such a tragedy? Would she ever be able to forgive herself if that happened?
