I dunno what made me think of magician-based imagery. 300+ words.

The disappearing act. It was what she was best at, leaving and coming back at the strangest hours of the day. At the strangest seasons of the year. Even now, after two years, she couldn't stay there for long. Not when it made her think of such horrible things, not when it made her head hurt to stare out over the expanse of land claimed by the Inferni. The coyotes. Her coyotes. Her family. But every disappearing act had the conclusion, the time when the creature that was sent off in a puff of smoke reappeared in the center of the stage, possibly disoriented, but no worse for wear.

That was where she was, at her curtain call. Talitha had shed her four-legged form for the more comfortable bipedal one as she realized just how close she was to home; she stood tall, not necessarily proud, but tall. She was sure she'd be recognized, even if she didn't receive a warm welcome. Gabriel would give her one, in his own way, as she would him. No one else could ruin her reunion with her father, but that would come later.

For now, she had to find someone worth talking to. Her crimson eyes cast shadowed glances along the length of the border she stood before, studying the skulls painted and stacked in warning to intruders: Do not pass. Such an artistic display of attempted intimidation; she was sure she'd have thought twice about coming near had she not already known what sat before her. Family. Home. A silent swish from her flask, tucking it into a makeshift garter to hide it from whoever came to see her. There was no reason to flaunt her vices, not any more than others already knew.

She hesitated. Maybe it wasn't her time to come back. Perhaps the scared rabbit still needed more time in whatever hiding place she was disappeared to. But it was too late now; in the end of it, she knew it was too late. She was there, out in the open.

Another Lykoi for the mix, waiting for her warm embrace back into the fold.

Kesho was patrolling again, his ears, eyes, and nose all concentrated on those borders as he followed their perimeter. He was familiar with it's length, having traveled it daily, almost habitually, obsessively. If no one else, he alone would keep those dirty wolves from sticking their noses around here. He had only seen one, so far, though. Shawchert had been lucky that Kesho had allowed him to escape.

The man turned his head into a breeze that caught him as he walked. There was a stranger's scent upon it, quite nearby. Something about the scent seemed familiar, but it had lied to him. Following the smell on two legs he walked along the borderline, glancing through crimson eyes up and down the land, hoping to rest them upon the figure whose scent was on his nose. As he passed the various skulls, his large fingers caressed each one with a deviously gentle sort of touch. He was proud of all of those skulls, despite none of them having been brought by him. He would contribute very soon, he knew.

The long guard hairs on his back bristled warily; what if this was the scent of a wolf? Surely they would learn their place. But as he neared, he noticed that the canine's shape was nowhere near large enough to be wolven, and so he relaxed slightly. Dark eyes narrowed as he placed a hand over his brow, neck and head craning upward to get a better view of the woman behind the decorated border. Kesho approached with a casual sort of confidence that he wore well, his red eyes glancing into hers briefly before he looked her up and down. There was something so familiar about her, and it wasn't just her scent.

"Woman," he said, his voice rough. "You do know these lands belong to Inferni?"

Kesho paused; as he'd been watching her, something clicked in his brain, and he realized that it was Gabriel whose resemblance she bore without flaw. Oh, joy, more family is just what we need, he thought grumpily. Then again, maybe he was judging her too soon. It was very possible she was not related at all. With Inferni's track record for keeping family so close, though, why would he doubt his well-sharpened instincts?

"What is your business here?"

His blunt question spoke for itself. He did not care to hear her life's story, and hoped she would not share it. If she was a relative of Gabriel, there was no doubt she would be permitted inside, whether Kesho liked it or not.

Don't worry about it. We all get crappy posts sometimes! [this is one of them] 300+ words

She didn't wait long, much to her disappointment; there was no chance to run now. No chance to back out. She was home, and she was now spotted by Inferni. There was no running. There was no hiding.

Her crimson eyes settled in somber silence on the tawny orange male, shorter than she by quite a bit. He was brash, like any Inferni was expected to be with strangers. But she wasn't a stranger, not to the pack at least. Her head tilted down, staring toward him from beneath her lashes in a faint display of whatever form of respect she thought might make him leave her alone. She only needed him for one reason: to bring Gabriel de le Poer to the borders of Inferni. Or Kaena. Grandmother. One of the leaders, one who could welcome her back, again.

What was her business. She wasn't sure. She didn't know what had made her so willing to come close; Andrezej was dead, but his memories were still in the vicinity. So the coymutt stayed silent for an extended moment, watching the land behind her 'greeter' until her voice, soft as a whisper, emanated from her black-dipped muzzle.

"I know these lands belong to Inferni." It wasn't the right question, but she answered it anyways. He was right to ask. It was good to set such a warning. With a few brisk steps, Talitha brought herself closer, standing with toes just barely touching the boundary line itself.

Her crimson eyes settled on the stranger again, a trait given to her by Faolin Mogotsi, one she found distasteful in the fact that they gave away all of her internal emotions. "I need to see Gabriel." Her business was nothing past that. This coyote couldn't give her what she needed, not at that moment at least. Silently, she paced a few steps away from the male, staying along the borderline to gaze into the depths of Inferni.

"Please get him for me," she murmured, a flick of her faintly curled tail punctuating the sentence with a final glance to her new 'friend'.

"I know these lands belong to Inferni." the woman stated simply.

She seemed to make it clear that she had been here before. Fine enough, Kesho thought with a grunt directed back at her. He shifted his weight slightly as she approached, not really sure what to think of this stranger. He was not prepared to trust so soon, and so he didn't. It was helpful, though, that she knew her reasons for being here. The old man didn't hold much fondness for the questioning process that was required for most newcomers. Family, of course, was different. If this woman was related to Gabriel, she was also related to Kaena. Kesho knew that this was not enough to guarantee her worth, reminding himself of the many Lykoi that had come and gone from this place.

"I need to see Gabriel." she said without flair.

The Hastati nodded slowly, knowingly, his eyebrows raised slightly. He was nearly certain now that his assumptions had been correct; who else but family or another pack's high ranking officers would request their Aquila by name.

"Who are you?" he asked, as if he didn't know. Well, sure, he didn't know her name, but he knew her family well enough. Red eyes wandered her body as he silently appraised it; she was an attractive girl, and nicely built. She might be useful here, he thought as his gaze wandered off again, uncaring.

"Please get him for me," she requested gently.

"I'll see what I can do." he replied in his growly voice, head turning and eyes scanning the landscape briefly before returning his focus to her. "I'm not sure that he's around." he held up a finger to her as he turned around, lifting his head to the sky, something he hadn't done in a while. Out came a series of yips ending in a short howl; a message to Gabriel-- or to Kaena, whichever came first.

"I suppose we'll find out." he stated simply, though he really didn't need to.

Bugh. -300 words. Shame.

The coymutt gazed on with a faint sense of intrigue as she waited and listened to the male at the borders. He was smaller, but she supposed he had more of the latrans genes brewing in him, and his size didn't take away from the attractive sense of surity he held as he spoke and stood. He was commanding, worth the efforts of her home. She enjoyed that.

But she wanted to go home already, to her room, and this meeting was becoming a tedious barrier from that. If only her father had been there first, or grandmother, someone who knew what she was. Who she was. Instead of a stranger. But at least it wasn't Halo. From the last meeting with her cousin, she was sure no leader would be called had the female come to greet her. How lucky she was that it was this male instead. Someone who wasn't going to turn her away.

Not that she'd be willing to leave if he tried.

"Who are you?" he asked, and she recentered her attention to his face, crimson eyes burning with confidence. "Talitha Lykoi. You know my family." Her tone was matter-of-fact, as if she demanded he did. They ran rampant through Inferni's lands. It would be hard to miss one.

He gave her the motion to wait as he turned back, calling out to her father. Or Kaena, it didn't matter. Talitha just wanted to be home, and either leader would suffice to bring her there.

"I suppose we'll find out."

A faint smile curled on her blackened lips, though one of simple amusement and not true enjoyment. "I suppose we will, hm."

Big Grin WC: 323

When the girl responded to his question about her identity, the man was not surprised.

"Talitha Lykoi. You know my family." she said, her tone confident and sure.

He gave a curt nod, and replied with equal confidence, "It happens that I do."

Then, as the seconds quickly passed without a return greeting, Kesho's brow furrowed. He knew that Kaena and Gabriel, and probably both, were within the ground today. Strange that even one hadn't replied to his short but obvious message. Perhaps they're sleeping or something... he thought vaguely, the man's red eyes darting around the forest again briefly. Hmm. Well, there wasn't much else to do if no one was answering. Kesho supposed he could escort her to one of them. Normally the man may have been doubtful as to a stranger's true identity; normally he might be suspicious of being lied to. But this girl looked so much like Gabriel that he was not able to doubt her.

"Come on, I'll take you through to find them." the man said, his voice a brief grumble. He was not thrilled to be taking on this task, but he had no choice. The older man would certainly prefer this to any sort of talking to he might get from Gabriel if he turned the woman away. With a sigh, he motioned for her to follow him as he turned and stepped off towards the direction from which he'd come from and to which she was headed. "Stay close to me," he instructed simply. Surely she'd be able to heed that.

The Hastati's nose began it's work as they walked, his two-legged form feeling suddenly strange, though he neglected shifting in order to conserve his energy. He didn't really have any clue where Kaena or Gabriel might be, and so he also could not guess how much time it might take to reach one of them.

Alright! Ready for the acceptingness.

No one came, much to her fears; perhaps Gabriel knew she was there and was so disappointed in her that he refused to come. Maybe Kaena had the same sentiments. Talitha knew she was fickle, she fled. She left Inferni so many times that she was unsure where she stood with her family. The family she was so happy to come back to. The family that might not want her.

The stranger didn't seem fazed by their lack of appearance past the furrowing of his brow. She wondered, silently, what he had on his mind. Her curiosity didn't last long; as his red eyes darted about the Inferni's forest, she heard his grumbling comment: "I'll take you through to find them." That was what she needed. Permission. Permission to step into her home. She didn't wait to act on it, taking a fluid step forward over the border. The Inferni lands didn't really feel any different, but she knew they were. Deep down, she knew that her home was far more than some simple region she took as a dwelling.

"Stay close to me." His instructions brought forth a snort from the younger female; as if she needed instruction not to wander off. She cast a vaguely irritated crimson glance to her guide, following his steps with her own long strides. She didn't need to smell for her father. She assumed he was where he usually was. At home, in the Caves, with grandmother and whoever else had taken up their residence. Regardless of knowing that fact, she didn't interject as she kept pace. Why take the glory away from this man?

The silver-shaded hybrid had not been keeping after the borders with the same frequency that she felt she should have. It was simply too cold, and walking around all night in the cold made getting up in the mornings twice as difficult. As it was, the scarred hybrid could barely function without at least a hit or two of substances given to her by Clover and occasionally her sisters. The old coyote was careful never to use more than this -- her tolerances would build, and any more than that and she lacked the sharpness of mind necessary for proper functioning. The howl had failed to raise her from sleep, which was unusual -- the one-eyed coyote was not generally a heavy sleeper.

Voices and sounds of movement outside of the cave, however, were enough to rouse her after a few moments. Blinking her one remaining eye sleepily, she gazed toward the entrance of the cave, expecting to see morning's light. Her groggy confusion cleared after a moment, and she leapt down from bed. She generally slept in her four-legged form -- it was more comfortable in these caves than her Optime form, after all, and it generally made for less trouble in the early hours. The Centurion was careful to minimize any manifestations of her aging; she would hide and protect it as any other secret in her life, no matter how much keeping it to herself would harm her.

She crept toward the exit to the cave and into the cold, peering around in her curiosity for the source of the disturbance. Two figures appeared, heading closer toward the caves -- the hybrid squinted her yellow-golden eye, trying to figure out just who it was -- after a moment, she figured it was Kesho, but who else would that be? The hybrid did not recognize Talitha until she drew closer, and surprise and delight both became apparent on Kaena's face when the recognition registered in her mind. “Talitha,&rqduo; she yelped warmly, forgetting or not caring that it was late and there were others sleeping quite nearby.

hurrr late. I meant to reply to this sooner but work got in the way. :{

The reason for Gabriel’s lack of response was a simple one—he had been outside of the borders when the sound had reached him. This was rare for him, but his anger towards the pack in the east had not faded. From what he had heard, Cotl had all but lost his mind since the boy’s death. Grieving occurred in many ways but the thought that the coy-dog would act out on his own worried Gabriel. For this reason he had made a point to go beyond the borders and look for any warning scents. Luckily, there had been none.

Kesho’s howl had caught Gabriel as he had begun to return, and the Aquila quickened his pace. By the time he had reached the location, though, all that remained were scents. The unfamiliar one was no stranger to him. Still, his daughter used Inferni like a revolving door; he worried, too, that this was due to her assault. Regardless, the fact she had returned was reason for joy. This was echoed by a softer grievance for his lost son, whose life had been dedicated to chasing his ghost of a sister. Perhaps with her return, he would once more appear. Gabriel certainly hoped so. It had been too long since the pair had been in their rightful home.

By the time Gabriel had tracked their scents to the caves, his mother’s voice had announced what he himself knew. Smiling faintly, the burly coy-wolf found the trio outside of the caves. He drew up unannounced and hung back behind Kesho, opting to let his daughter control the reunion.

424 words. A bit out of order, but trying to pick up the pace a bit.

As the stranger lead her toward the caves, the maturing woman felt her longing for home rekindle. Her mind knew where she was, but her emotions seemed confused; had it been so long? Could she no longer connect home to the beautiful kingdom she stood within at that moment? Impossible. Home was where the blood lived, and her blood was all over the land, coursing through the veins of other coymutts within the boundaries. She was proud to be the daughter of such widespread genetics; she was proud to be Talitha Lykoi. Or at least a Lykoi.

Her steps were slow and fluid, each one taking her closer to the destination she desired, to the faces of her past that she was desperate to see. It was the beautifully ragged face of her grandmother that caught her sight first. The one-eyed coyote appeared on all fours at the mouth of the Inferni caves; the sight of the old woman caused a fluttering of butterflies in the Luperci's stomach. Another reunion. Another possibility of disappointing the important figures in her life.

Gabriel's absence was enough proof in her mahogany-crowned head.

But Kaena seemed delighted, not disappointed, as the man who lead her through the land brought her closer to the opening. “Talitha.” The simple gesture of speaking her name, the voice warm, was enough to sooth the distress building in the stomach of the Lykoi child. A cinnamon-backed hand raised to cover a subtle smile; her grandmother had seemed to forget that she wasn't alone in the cavernous home.

As soon as she felt comfortable with the feelings of her grandmother, Talitha broke from the stranger's side, approaching the silver lupus with a sense of confident familiarity. With each step came the more familiar scent of her father. Her powerful, handsome, compassionate father. Her ideals were warped, she knew, but she enjoyed seeing him in such a holy light. Despite her longing to turn back to him, she remained focused on the Centurion; if Gabriel were upset, she would prefer to have words with him without an audience.

“Home is where the heart is, and I missed it,” she murmured; while she hadn't been asked for an explanation, she felt it was right to give them reason to her magic show disappearance once again. Perhaps it was the charge of liquor in her bloodstream that brought about faint traces of shining tears to her crimson Massacre eyes, but perhaps it was the simple fact that she was not being turned away.
