[P] Get Me Out of Here

Decided not to forward-date, since it took me a while to get up anyway.

Oh, sweet Halcyon Mountains; so calm, so peaceful, so serene... and Darkness wanted nothing to do with them.

He had managed to push aside his fear of heights, just for a while, when he had scaled the giant hills. The only thing that had kept him determined to get over them was a burning curiosity; he couldn't resist exploring an unknown territory when it was only a slightly short - even though painful - climb away. Unfortunately, whenever he looked at them, he could remember that feeling of being unnaturally high and wanting to get down as quickly as he could. Still, his curiosity overcame this, and he still found himself in the territory after about a month of coming to this area of Nova Scotia.

By now he had made a full loop: over the mountain, past Inferni, around Millstone Village, and back to where he had started. His next destination would be heading southward, as he had heard there were many more packs down along the shoreline where the rivers he had encountered let out. Still, he wasn't finished with the mountain lands yet. The southeastern parts were still a mystery to him, and he was determined to find out what was there.

It was cool, a bit overcast, as the dark male made his way eastward. By now the dye on his mane was mostly faded, nearly gone. His satchel was slung over his shoulder, barely heavy. As usual he had lost his rock collection, but now he was completely out of dye. Getting more wasn't his priority at this point; he just wanted to get this travel over with and leave the area of the mountain. It hadn't bothered him at first, but now that he was starting to head east, he found himself getting closer to it which extremely annoyed him.

Despite this, he was still in his typical happy mood, walking around and talking to himself as if he hadn't a care in the world. "Almost done with this area, finally. Wonder if I'll meet anyone."

my road to hell is surely paved

Though the coyote woman liked Anathema, a seed of doubt had been placed in her mind alongside a seed of desire. Sirius had been the one to plant both of those there -- he had introduced the thought into her head that perhaps it was not Anathema she was so attached to, but her own family, the mismatched bits and pieces that had gathered together to make a bricolage of a family. He had planted that seed of doubt into her mind, but even more powerful than that was that tiny flower of desire, germinating in the folds of her brain and sprouting into a mighty vine that seemed to wrap about her mind, squeezing all otherwise rational thought of it. There was power to be had, and she need only reach out her hand and pluck it delicately from the air, from nothing.

She had been to the area beyond Inferni, the flat and rolling plains that began at the mountains' end and rolled right to the edge of the earth itself, dropping off into the ocean. The cliffs were not so mighty and impressive, but they weren't a dive she particularly wished to make. It was not a common area for her to visit, but it was stuck in her head -- there was no one in that direction. It was empty and uninhabited, rather unlike these crowded mountains. Inferni had drawn its borders back from Halcyon, it seemed, but Eris could not help but feel crowded by the coyote clan. She would always feel crowded by them, no matter how far she got. It was not coyotes themselves she disliked, however, but one particular brand of coyote -- the Infernians.

Still, her dislike was not so great that she would seek to do them harm; so long as they were indifferent to her existence, she would return the favor. The sable-shaded woman rolled these thoughts over in her head as she rolled the sharp and jagged chunks of amethyst along with them. She kept two with her now, tucked safely into her gris-gris. Though Eris did not truly understand the meaning of these gris-gris things, Ouija had given it to her, and Ouija meant it for her protection and safety. She would not dismiss such a gift, but she used it rather like a pouch in which to hold random objects rather than protective objects. Nyx had told her these rocks were good for increasing one's spiritual connection and facilitating a psychic connection. Eris hardly needed help in the latter area; she needed only consume some funny mushrooms or, apparently, witness a murder.

The sound of a voice startled the coal-hued wolf's thoughts, and she nearly dropped the pieces of amethyst. It was too distant yet to make out the words, but sure as anything, someone had spoken. Chartreuse eyes narrowed to slits as she peered through the dimness; the clouds obscured much of the sunlight today, and it seemed gloomy as dusk. In the distance, she spied a figure -- tall, although with an awkwardly bent posture. His coat was dark as her own and seemingly free of color save some faded hue she could not so much as discern from such a distance. Anathema was a distance behind her; he would seem to be approaching their borders. She stood, though she made no move toward him, nor did she beckon to him; instead, she simply watched, ready to receive him if he were to make his way to her but unwilling to venture further from her own borders. A strange wariness had filled her since Wretch's disappearance, and whatever friendliness toward outsiders had existed in the woman had disappeared.

After wondering if he'd encounter anyone, Darkness's natural reaction was to take a quick look around; it wasn't often that he just stumbled upon someone who was willing to have a nice, friendly chat. He tilted his nose to the air and gave a small sniff; he was nearing the borders of some pack, and though it was a good walk away the pack's scent was close. His first reaction was to wonder if that was because one of their members was nearby, and sure enough, as bicolor eyes glanced around, he noticed another black wolf, also standing on two legs. "Wow, are there a lot of dark-colored wolves around here or what?" he whispered.

Apart from her color, one thing really stood out about this canine to him: her eyes. He had unusual eyes, thanks to his heterochromia, but he had never quite seen eyes as bright yellow as hers. Wasn't that a sight? Maybe that was why she was given obsidian fur, to make them stand out more. Darkness wasn't the type to swoon over anyone's appearance, but he knew what stood out.

Not like appearance affected how he treated anyone, of course. "Hello there!" he called out to her, throwing in a friendly tail wag. He was all too used to being treated unkindly by members of a pack; that was probably just due to the fact that those Inferni coyotes were prejudiced. They had also been the ones to see him first, which certainly changed things; they probably saw him as a threat, since he had been rather close to the borders. He wasn't sure if he had been spotted first or vice versa when it came to this meeting, but hopefully the fact that he was a good distance away from the border changed things. Besides, as far as he was concerned he was meeting another wolf; there was no reason to be prejudiced against someone for their eye color... was there?

my road to hell is surely paved

Eris had never taken a notice to many coat colors, though since she had come to Anathema, the dark pattern seemed to be prevalent -- there were, of course, obvious outliers such as golden-yellow Tlantli and pale Naniko, but the coyote had seen many dark-hued wolves, as well. This male was no exception, and though there was no obvious kinship of coloration to the hybrid, the woman did find herself smiling as she approached a bit closer, the tip of her tail wavering in friendless. Though more of a stoic type, Eris never saw the need for outright nastiness when first meeting a canine. Sometimes the blood seemed to call to her, those rare moments of near-shadow over her mind, when everything but the vision that was not seen with the eyes seemed to dim to meaninglessness. Beyond that, she really was quite amiable and approachable. She was a smiling murderer, indifferent to the fate of those deemed worthy enough to serve her purposes.

“Hi there,” she said, tilting her head to the side as she got closer. His eyes were different colors -- she had seen this before, once or twice -- most recently, Axelle came to mind, but she had been rather oddly colored to begin with. Odd did not necessitate ugly, however, and the hybrid hadn't found the bi-colored woman to be displeasing to the eye, nor did she find this wolf's difference in eye color displeasing. Appearance mattered little in the grand scheme anyway; as a canine sometimes found relatively attractive by others, Eris vastly underplayed the importance of appearance. Vain as she was regarding her own appearance, however, she was not discriminating or arrogant where it was concerned. Personality and intelligence meant more to her than that.

“Eris Eternity, of Anathema. For now,” she said, the grin on her face turning to mischievousness, a mask of near-playfulness fit for a callithump. “Heading there now?” she inquired quickly, lifting a brow in genuine curiosity as she jerked a thumb behind her to indicate the pack somewhere behind her.

Post is sort of short; I wanted to force myself to type up something before I made you wait any longer. I do apologize for that. Tongue

This new wolf, who introduced herself as Eris, seemed friendly enough. Darkness's tail began wagging, ignoring the fact that he didn't quite understand the "For now" part she added. What, was she changing her name? Leaving the pack? Well, it didn't affect him, and he simply ignored it vocally, leaving only a tilt of his head to indicate his slight confusion as he replied. "Sorta. Jus' been going around the land, and haven't been to this area yet." He readjusted the satchel around his shoulder, which he had gotten used to doing every few minutes even when it wasn't necessary.

Hoping that Eris would be open to a conversation, he decided to introduce himself. Holding out his hand in a friendly gesture, he said, "Oh, and I'm Darkness, loner, probably not going to settle down but who knows?" Mimicry, there was nothing wrong with it, especially since he wasn't sure how to go about talking to her. During moments like this he was usually focused on the conversation and could come up with subjects in an instant, but with the Halcyon Mountain just a brief glance away he found his mind wandering.

With a small shrug, taking his thoughts back to the matter at hand, he asked, "So... where're you heading off to?" She didn't seem to be heading towards the territory she was pointing to, and if she didn't mind he'd follow her around for a little while, just for the sake of conversation. If he managed to learn a bit about these lands, he might not feel so pressured to stay in them any longer, and would be able to leave as quickly as possible. He had nothing against those he had met in the area, but just being around these mountains was disturbing, and if he stuck around any longer he would go absolutely mad.

my road to hell is surely paved

The hybrid had come to realize that all she truly wanted in this world was a place where she might count on those surrounding her, wholly and completely. She could not say this of Anathema, and certainly not Inferni -- even within Eterne there were those she might have labeled enemy outright. This new idea would be different; this would be a place where she knew each member of her family, her pack, intimately, and called to their strengths and buried their weaknesses beneath the strengths of other canines. She knew nothing of leadership, but visions of grandeur filled her head nonetheless, and she found herself smiling perhaps a bit too exuberantly at Darkness as he spoke, simply nodding in response to his newness. Eris made no judgments on that account -- she herself was just a year embedded into this land.

“Nice to meet you, Darkness,” she said, repeating his name with a grin. She liked it -- he did not seem so dark of personality, but his coat certainly made his name truthful. The hybrid took his hand in the gentle grip of her own and swung it twice. Hand-shaking was not something altogether unfamiliar to her, as those in Eterne who traveled to Barbados had seemed to adopt it as a trait to distinguish themselves from the general population, though she did not engage in it without prompt from another. “Well, you've sure got choices if you do decide to settle down. six packs at least, maybe more. I'm not so familiar with the land to the south, past the city,” she admitted, rolling her shoulders in a gentle shrug and smiling faintly. There would be one more to add to the mix if she had her way, too.

“But I wasn't headed anywhere. I could do with some wandering, though, if you aren't against company,” she added quickly, feeling as though she could walk with this wolf. She liked the look of him, and he was not of Anathema. She might speak freely to him about some things on her mind -- or she might not. In any case, she could do with a walk and Darkness seemed the type she could make acquaintence with. Perhaps she was too easily trusting, but his size and musculature reminded her faintly of Larkspur, and if nothing else, the coyote hybrid found him physically attractive. No matter if she found her relationship with the D'Angelo man awkward; she would have easily admitted his attractiveness.

Eris offered a handshake, which Darkness readily took. It was a greeting he hadn't encountered much, despite all of the canines he had met in his travels. At least it was a sign that she really was up to a nice talk. He had to force himself to stop casting short, sideways glances at the mountains, once again dragging his attention to Eris. Friends were always a welcome distraction, always.

She mentioned that there were six packs in the area. He had to admit, he found this fact surprising; the land was so large, he thought there were easily many more packs than six. Being a wanderer at heart he doubted he would ever settle down, and if he did he wanted to be with someone he knew well who lived far away from these blasted mountains. Io and Layla were the only canines he had encountered more than once; Layla had been a loner last time they had met, and Io lived in Inferni, where wolves were equal to flies, meaning it didn't matter if they had actually gotten along before. Even if he could make a friend of Eris, her scent suggested that she lived far too close to these hills for his liking.

Fortunately he got the opportunity to evade his distraction when the hybrid suggested they go for a little walk. "I'm absolutely not against company," he replied, readily smiling. "If you don't mind the fact I have no location in mind, you're free to wander with me." He hoped the mention of being somewhat lost didn't disturb her; he wouldn't feel comfortable venturing near Anathema's lands with one of their members near him, though he had no intention of getting himself and Eris lost down south. He would just walk where the land took him, just as he always had.

Taking a quick glance at the sky, he noticed that it seemed to have gotten darker since he had first seen Eris, which hadn't been all that long ago. At this rate it might start raining when they walked. Well, that didn't help things at all; now, if she decided to come with him, he'd be leading her further from her dry home in Anathema, and if it started to rain she had plenty of reason to abandon him on his path, leaving him to wonder why he had ever bothered to scale Halcyon. Suddenly he regretted admitting that he had no location in mind; the odds were surely against him.

the world shudders as the worm gets its wings

There was no fear in the sable woman for the mountains, the lakes, the plains, or any other landform. Fear was something Eris was generally unaccustomed to; she was usually quite even-tempered, free of general anxiety and specific fears. His own glances toward the mountains went mostly unnoticed; as he spoke, however, the hybrid's yellow-green eyes flicked to the sky, studying it a moment before she looked back to his mismatched gaze, half-frowning. The sky seemed alive with gray and black, dark clouds rolling in from the west. She saw no lightning and heard no thunder, but the unspoken threat was there all the same.

“It seems we're bound to hit bad weather. Might I suggest a destination? To the south, there are a few shacks. They're only half-standing and they won't do for keeping us completely dry, but it's somewhere to go, and you could stay there over-night, if the weather gets really bad,” she said, thinking of the half-buildings that were practically collapsing in on themselves in the Dampwoods. It wasn't quite a village, just a few hunter's cabins leftover from the time of people. Soon there would be nothing left but a few rotting planks and a lacuna in the trees. In time, even that would be gone, fading away as new trees grew to replace what man had cut down.

Eris might have invited him to Anathema, but the hybrid had no idea how her pallid leader regarded visitors and outsiders, and she was not so keen on attracting unwanted attention to herself at such a precarious time. It would not do to act out of the ordinary; she would carry on as she had for these past months, acting exactly as she had upon first joining the pale woman's ranks. Things would continue as they had, and she would steal away in the night, unnannounced and unanticipated.
