The Fire in our Hearts

threadness!!

The life of a pup in a pack was easy really, you just ran around and played all day and ate when you wanted to and didn't have to worry much about things, well at least Analise thought so. She was playing with her Padre again, hide and seek was such a fun game in the forest because Analise was very much smaller than her daddy it was easier for her to hide although he did have the advantage of being able to climb into the trees and hide from her up there. Dimly she could hear her father still counting a short ways away and the brown and chocolate child giggled to herself before racing into the bushes trying to be as silent as she could while she ran through low vegetation and dodged trees.

León counted backwards from thirty in Spanish as the sounds of his daughter faded away into the forest, the chocolate and earth man did not peek at the direction his daughter had taken for he could hear it clearly and there would be tell tale signs in the undergrowth, the forest would tell of her passing and inform him of where she was. He almost always won these games of hide and seek she insisted on playing and she was determined to beat him for once in a win that he hadn't deliberately decided to lose, she always knew when he had as well. When he reached uno the man whirled around and slipped silently into the tall shadowy trees.

It took him almost no time at all to find his daughter as she was still in motion, he caught up to the young pup and grabbed her around her middle, lifting her up from the floor and tickling her belly. Analise squealed and wriggled in his arms trying to lick his face with her tongue. He laughed and she laughed and the Austral man put his daughter down upon the ground and they walked together towards the village. The child was still confined to her lupus form but it would not be long before she would gain the use of her two other forms. As though she was listening in on his thoughts the almost identical to himself pup turned her head to him and spoke.

"I'll be shifting soon won't I daddy?" He knew Analise's greatest fear would be that somehow she was not luperci and would never join her father in the world of oposable thumbs.

"Of course dear, both your mother than me are luperci so there is no possible way that you won't be a shifter." Both of them winced at the mention of Analise's mother and the conversation came to an abrupt end with the two of them walking in silence through the AniWaya village. Not knowing anyone really the pair kept to themselves as they approached the huge fire that sat at end end of the village. Father and daughter both stared at the Great fire with reverent respect, having lived on their own for all of Analise's life the girl had developed a respect of fire, her father teaching her to go about it with caution. Fire had kept them alive through the snowstorms in the earlier months of the year, it had provided the warmth necessary for them to cook the frozen meat they had found of dead animals to eat.

"Daddy, why is this fire so big? What does it mean?" She looked up at him and he saw the orange and red flames reflecting in her violet eyes.

"I don't know princess, maybe it helps keep the village free of snow when there is snowfall. Or when they are having parties and festivals they can cook all their food at once. There could be a huge list of reasons" The younger Austral man did not know the reasoning behind this huge fire, he had not thought to ask his brother when he had last seen him. León shifted his feet and stared deeply into the fire looking past the flickering red, orange and yellow as though trying to see the spark of life deep within it. Moving with a fluid grace the man moved to sit on the ground next to his daughter, wrapping an arm around her back.

With flails? Big Grin Plus: The Fire in 'out' hearts? o.0 (Nootau: Visible) Note: Hover above the AniWayan words for translations :3

One could always say that Ralla was content with her lot in life; it was a good life, after all. She lived with her family in safety in the village, was about to have pups, loved her duty, loved her mate and adopted child, and loved the tribe. Which is why, after doubting her place of influence within the pack--which had not mattered largely to her before--she had been so surprised by Chief Dawali's proposal for her to enter the Council. Needless to say the offer had stunned her, and she had felt like a child again, stuttering out modesty and thank yous. She couldn't believe that she would ever have been chosen to be on the Council--and so young!--since her native tribe had only ever allowed the elders to be a part of such a distinguished group. But lo and behold; her doubts and fantasies had become true. Her barn owl spirit guide had expressed his own pleasure at the advancement in his own way--extra preening, the occasional whirring chirp; all of which uncharacteristic of his often stoic self--and now he flew with Ralla as she walked to the Great Fire; the starting point of her life in AniWaya.

The date of the pups' coming was near, she could tell. She could no longer even jog to where she needed to go, and could feel them kick avidly often. Kemo had confined her, now, solely to AniWaya for her safety, but she worried more about the delivery and even getting word to Noss that he had nieces or nephews--or even both! Between keeping herself fed and healthy, Ralla balanced it with her daily trips to the Great Fire, whose warmth soothed her soul and whose smoke drifted like a moving picture. But that night she did not find herself alone. Stretching her arm out gracefully as she walked, the white wolfess felt Nootau's small claws grasp her arm as he alighted, and she came to stand next to one of the wooden sitting logs facing the other two sitting there. "Asiyu," she said, smiling at the young child next to the man. Both were of a dark brown color, although the girl's eyes were violet and the man's was... White... Like a certain Fire Tender that Ralla knew quite well. "My name is Ralla. I believe that I've seen you two about here, but I regret that I've been rather...busy," she said with a smile of regret. "Forgive me, but do you know J'adore Austral?"

Looking from the pair to the Great Fire, Ralla took a seat on one of the logs, feeling the weight of the pups beholden in her stomach. She saw how the two looked at the Great Fire, and knew that not everyone knew the stories. It was her duty to spread them, and it was high time that she resumed her lessons, pups or no. She could spare an hour a week away from them after a time and still be sure that they would be safe. "Atsila Galvkawetiyu," she said after a moment, "the Sacred Fire. It is the center of our protection, you know." This she knew firmly, since it had sacrificed itself and saved so many lives during the blizzard they had in the winter. She was sure that if it had not gone out Theodoric would've been saved, but...even the Great Spirits have a plan unknown to lesser souls, and mere mortals could not always comprehend it. The Great Fire had tried its best, but it had seemed as if the spirit of the cold winds had nearly prevailed. But once more, AniWaya had remained.

with flails! Big Grin

So entrenched in his thoughts that the man did no even notice the footsteps of the woman nor her first greeting until his daughter produced noise from next to him startling him out of his musings.

!Hola Ma'am." The little pup waved a lupus bound paw at the woman and León also greeted her "Hola Miss Ralla." Now his mind had returned to the living León looked over the female who had joined himself and his daughter. The woman was white, purely so with a strange marking that adorned her forehead. Green eyes that spoke the hues of the forest looked back at his own white ones and most noticeably she was heavy with young, so heavy that it looked as though she might collapse any moment into childbirth, her time was very near then, León thought to himself. The last time he had seen his mate alive was when she had been heavy with pup and giving birth to the daughter that now sat next to him, she died with Analise's brother, Neerona still cradled inside her womb never to see the light of day or suckle with his seconds old sister.

Even as he answered her question León was looking around for a male who would be the father, for no male would leave his mate alone when she was so far along with his children. León himself had never left Kailypso's side for most of her pregnancy, a fact that drove the Italian wolfess to the edge of crazy. But he could see no male near and wondered if he was from a different pack, or he was gone, dead, or even if the pups had been produced by force, León now looked at Ralla with softer caring eyes, if this female was alone then he would assist her in any way possible, even if she were not alone and her mate simply careless he would still assist this female.

"Si Ralla, although we don't come here a lot, we are still new to the pack. He could not help the chuckle that left him, it seemed his brother knew quite a lot of people, most of whom wanted to know why they shared their eye color.

"Si Señorita, he is my older hermano, my brother. Born of the same parents with in the first litter." THe man watched with steady eyes as the white female named Ralla sat herself down upon the logs that were placed around this great fire. He listened with great interest as she told them the name of the fire that sat before them and he repeated her words quietly, branding them into his mind,

"Atsila Galvkawetiyu" Before he could ask any questinos of his onw his daughter was there already speaking for both their minds as she often did. Her eyes were wide and filled with excitement, traditions and legends were one of Analise's favorite things to learn about.

"How does it protect Miss Ralla? What are the legends behind it?" He let his daughter speak for them and watched Ralla with interested eyes.

This man's accent and speech was more heavily accented with Spanish than J'adore, but the connection was inconceivable. Maybe the whole Austral clan will come here! Ralla thought with a private giggle. The little girl was adorable, and her enthusiasm refreshing. Soon Ralla would have three of the little ones, but she could not speak for their personalities. Although the moon was also the patron spirit of childbirth, Ralla's attentions to her work had been slightly waning as the days advanced; her time would soon come, and she would not leave her hut for awhile.

Ralla laughed as the little girl jumped into the conversation just as she was about to answer Leon, whom she had remembered just then, as J'adore had mentioned him while they were doing their lessons. Although Ralla was indisposed to teaching J'adore the proper dance forms, she could instruct him while sitting, and it was a perfectly able thing for him to teach her script. "There are many legends as to how the Great Fire came to be and what it is. But AniWaya has it's own Great Fire, forged from the spirits of the first seven families," the white wolfess began, looking to Leon for approval of continuing the story. Sensing it, she closed her eyes and recalled it.

"Once there was endless war," she recited, having already begun writing the first part of the tale into a scroll in her spare time. "Seven great families lived and fought in the lands far away, and there was sickness and strife. When war began to bear hard on them, the seven great families came together to form AniWaya, the first united tribe. The sicknesses died away, and food became plenty as the hunters came back with game and the crops came in full." Ralla's free hand moved throughout most of the first part, swirling through the smoke to create vestiges of the time long gone; figures there and gone in a single blink. Nootau had to flutter his wings on the other arm to steady himself as her body shifted as well with the movement, although he seemed only slightly perturbed by the interruption. "Spirit guides began to appear to each new member born of their tribes, and so to thank the Great Spirits, each of the seven families gathered an ember from their hearths and combined them. This created the Great Fire, the entity of our ancestors and connection to the Great Spirits." It was a relatively longer tale, if told with all its details laid bare, but Ralla neither wanted to scare the child with the gorey details or bore her with etymology and such. All questions would be answered, but only if asked. After all, questioning things is what promotes knowledge. "It is the warmth of our hearts, the beacon in the darkness, and the shield of our home." As it had protected us in the blizzard...

sorry for forevertaking failpost, i apologise D:

White and violet stared back in endless fascination as the keep of fire began to weave her tale to them with gusto, an adoration of legends and stories reflected in both their gaze's. An inner fire that had no relation to the great one that burned before them. Ralla looked to him, seeking his approval for the start of the story and he nodded slightly a small smile sneaking onto his muzzle. Analise gasped as the story started with war, famine and death and she smiled happily when the families flocked together and became AniWaya. León was instead watching the smoke figures and scenes that came to life and then disappeared in a heart beat. The spirit guide of Ralla fluttered about on her arm to keep his balance and León instead studied the bird. He wondered if the spirits of AniWaya would permit him to have a spirit guide or not.

The story finished and he clapped enthusiastically, and from the look on Analise's face it was clear that she could join in his applause if she could. Then her voice spoke out,

"What's a spirit guide? Will I have one?! Curiosity colored her voice and her face, and the earth and chocolate daughter cocked her head to the side.

It's catch up day! >:O

Ralla laughed warmly as she finally settled back into the reality of the mortal world, seeing the little girl get all excited over it. She remembered when she, too, was very young, and so easily stirred by the stories. Even though she still loved them dearly, she supposed that having them once drilled into her head had calmed her physical reactions. "A spirit guide is a soul of a deceased animal from the mortal world," she said, holding Nootau out on her arm for the girl to have a better look, her voice once more slipping into the story-teller that she instinctually was. "They are sent here to guide us and help us down our chosen--or right--paths. It is said that if a spirit guide helps his charge to fulfill one of his or her destiny paths, they will earn their place permanently amongst the Great Spirits. Still, if not the highest of the spirits, they are to be greatly respected, because they are our teachers and guardians." Looking into Nootau's ink-black eyes, the two sent out a silent communication that did not include words or even the transference of images and emotions through the mind (which only Nootau could send anyway). No; this was the plain old-fashioned understanding of selves and each other that was inherent in the bond between wolf and spirit guide.

"Well..." Ralla started in consideration of the girl's next question. She honestly could not say for sure; she didn't make the decisions, and she didn't want to get the girl's hopes up. "If the Great Spirits think that you need the guidance and stay within the tribe, they may grace you with one. They only come to AniWayans, and to be AniWayan means to be a part of the family--not by blood, but by spirit. Just by being here and being a part of the tribe, you are family." Yes, that was a proper answer, Ralla thought. It was all true, and not a promise of anything for certain. How it would break the white woman's heart if she promised something she could not deliver to such a young child... "By the way, what is your name, little one? Do you like it here?" But oh, how she loved children. They were always so active, and they were the future of the tribe, for the matter. She looked back to Leon. "She seems quite charming," she said with complete seriousness, even as she felt her own young stir within her. The little things were quite restless...

phail post

Wide curious eyes watched with undisguised inquisitiveness as Ralla explained what a spirit guide was to her, they shot to the wise looking owl that sat on her shoulder with a new awe, she had originally thought he had been a pet of Ralla or something like Faith and Senorita were to she and her father,

"Teachers and guardians? Like daddys and mummys are?" Looking at Ralla as she was Analise missed León flinching and the look of sorrow that came onto his face along with the dropping of his ears as he looked away from the females for a second before turning back around, an unconvincing smile on his face, he missed his Kailypso so much it felt like he would always be in pain,

"Kind of Princess, but I'm not a spirit guide." The girl child nodded in understanding of Ralla's explanation, if the spirits felt she needed help then they would sent a guide to keep her way on track.

"I'm Analise Kailypso Austral." She knew her middle name was the name her mother had help so carried it with great pride and reverence. He nodded,

"She's so much like her mother that sometimes it scares me." Sometimes it was almost as if his beloved had taken over her body and was acting out from it.

"Phail"? XD We should probably wrap this thing up soon Tongue

"Yes, exactly," Ralla giggled in the warm tone intrinsic to herself, although when she looked to Leon again, as was at the very least polite when conversing, she saw his faustian smile and was puzzled. But he answered his daughter, to, and so she ignored it for the moment. Not to pry is the key, she chided herself, although this battled with the curious side of her. Not too long ago she had been in a position where she had wanted no one to know of her past; what right did she have to go snooping into others'?

"That's a beautiful name," Ralla said, leaning down a little to take a closer look at the girl. She was all innocence and sunshine, as girls her age should be; right? Honestly, Ralla didn't quite completely know herself; mothering would be a completely new thing to her, so she guessed she would know soon enough. "You know 'Analise' means grace, like the gentle scent of the anise spice? And Kailypso means 'she who hides', while 'Austral' is 'south'. So the entire meaning of your name is 'grace who hides in the south'. It is an auspicious name; it means a strong beauty, or that one's grace will be found in adventure." From there she looked to Leon, who then mentioned Analise's resemblance to her mother. There it is again; that look. It was clear, at that point, that Leon's mate and Analise's mother was either gone or something of the sort; something at the very least to make Leon very unhappy at the mention of her. Ralla hadn't seen a woman named Kailypso about, so she could only assume she was not in the pack, but...by the looks Leon was giving, she held her tongue--the worst (and most likely) assumption being that she was dead. She contemplated whether or not she should elaborate on a story having to do with reincarnation, but decided against it, thinking it would only upset Leon.

"It makes me wonder how my children will be. Adventurous and brave like their father or as simple as me?" Yes, how would the little ones turn out? Certainly they would be white-furred, even though it was a recessive gene? Both parents were white, after all. But Ralla would love them, regardless of coloring or gender or any of that; they were hers.

This will be the last post then, and we can end it now Big Grin 2+

The youngish pup smiled almost shyly as Ralla said her name was beautiful, not many people despite her father had ever complimented her before. As much as Analise was happy and all smiles and personality there was also an echo of sorrow that was always present in her eyes that should not be present in one so young, and the same was obvious in León's as well for those who knew what they were looking for, within their most secret of thought's both the daughter and the father each blamed themselves for the death of the mother and mate; Kailypso D'lykina, León for getting the woman pregnant in the first place and Analise for being such a hard pup to give birth to that it exhausted the mother.

Still appearances had to be kept and the young child was genuinely intrigued at the meanings of her name, it was different than the translation into spanish and made her feel special. The Austral man smiled as Ralla wondered over what her pups would be like when they were born and as they grew, as much as both of them would like to stay here and talk to this woman in the light of the Great Fire, León could no longer ignore the yawns that Analise was trying to hide from him, the night was getting darker and it was already past the time that his daughter would usually go to sleep. He stood from his seated position and stretched to straighten out his spine, several of the vertebra cracking loudly,

"I'm sorry to say Ralla that it is time for us to leave. Analise needs to sleep and I must admit, I am tired myself. It was nice talking with you." Analise also said her goodbye's as she followed her father back to their home.
