The ruins of the past

OOC: Hehe, had a burst of muse and so i started this ^^. Set in the morning?

All around him was a blur of green, grey and white; every ruin looked the same, untouched before he and the others had claimed this place to be their home. Vines crawled up and stretched up high along the remains of once great walls, where at their bases lay clumps of corroding, bleached stones. A smug, warm feeling settled over him as he travelled silently through the secretive lands that housed his pack; for no one would find them there, no one would expect such grand, powerful canines to live within human ruins.

A dark, scarred hand ran lightly along the surface of one of the intact walls, the tips of his fingers took in the rough, uneven surface of the crumbling structure. Such ruins, to the once enslaved male, were a castle, a haven. There were no cages with locks and keys, one could hide away from prying eyes and feel safe here. This place is his home.

The lands he walked were simply remnants; reminders of the great things that once existed, much like his own life. Once upon a time, he hadn’t been a scarred wreck, an emotionless dud. A seemingly long time ago he had been normal and oh how he longed to go back in time, to return to the simplistic days and his peaceful childhood. The only thing that held him to his life now was Bastion…

Stepping forward, a small rock crumbled beneath a powerful paw and his hand slipped away from the wall where it ended. Resting his back against the white stone, he slid down it until he gently reached the floor; his sword clattering against the hard ground within its sheath.

Tilting his head up, he closed his eyes and simply took in the scents and sounds that surrounded him. A gently breeze moved across his fur, ruffling the layers of clothes that covered his ruined body.

Eris had not known of this place prior to the foundation of Salsola. This place had been a mystery to her, and she had explored the Drifter Bay territory extensively as an Inferni coyote. The sable-shaded hybrid had been pleased to find this secret place with its fields of tall grasses and thistles and weeds, obscuring the entrances to the rooms left standing. Some did not have roofs; Eris knew they would need to have something erected over them eventually. In her own case, she had selected a rather private thing, half-underground. Half of the roof was gone, but a cluster of trees had grown in the southwest corner of the building, obscuring most of the open sky and protecting the entrance doubly. They were so lucky to have this place, she thought, settled against the base of one of the trees. Though yet saplings, they were thick and comfortable enough to lean back against, and the hybrid peered about her domain, finding it satisfactory.

A faint scent caught the hybrid's attention, and her chartreuse eyes opened. Janos. She did not know him or Bastion exceptionally well; they had encountered one another briefly, but what she knew of them, she could say they were good additions to Salsola. On fearsome appearance alone, Janos's ability to intimidate was worth his weight in gold. Bastion spoke to a special part of her, one that Sirius did not share but merely tolerated. In return for his quiet tolerance, she was generally not so forthright with her own beliefs, and did not force them upon Salsola as a whole. Bastion's offering, however, and the force and idea behind it, were not lost on the sable hybrid, and she smiled to think of them both, exiting the place she would call home to seek him out.

These ruins were older than the village, and the coyote hybrid meandered amongst their largeness, wondering what they might have been. Some ancient fort? She could not speak to human history, but she found them fascinating nonetheless. Janos's hulking figure stood before her, and the chartreuse-eyed woman smiled at him, a toothy and curved smile that spoke of her superiority and fondness both for this canine. “Just right for us,” she said, softly, not wishing to startle him. He might have heard her approach; she had not been too silent with it.

OOC: Bah, fail post. Sorry >.<

With the wind came the soft sound of a female’s voice, gentle and almost like a whisper as all females were. Opening an ice toned eye, the newly appointed Arbiter looked for the source to find the dark figure of his Auxiliary nearby; although he knew little of the dark leader, it seemed as if Bastion was both fond of her and respected her, and so he had chosen to attempt the same, despite his natural discomfort and mistrust of those who claim a position of leadership. Smoothly, he pulled away from the wall in a movement that seemed almost unnatural for someone of his size and appearance, following that he lowered his head so that his eyes were cast lower than his superiors. “Aye, it’is” he replied, his words short and to the point, his voice deep and throaty like.

After a moment of lowering his head, he lifted it; for it was not in his nature to bow to another aside from Bastion, he’d shown his respect but he would not be a slave to this woman, nor any of Salsola’s leaders; he had gained his freedom from such a restricting position. Cocking his head to the side, he did a quick scan of the surroundings to check that the female was alone, this time testing the scents aswell. From what he could tell, the dark female was alone but he did not rely on his nose; his ability to test scents was weaker than the average canine and so he often ignored the sense all together. What does she want? The thought occurred to him, curiosity flaring on his inside while his face kept its usual blank look.

“Ya’ need somethin’ from me?” he questioned the other, using few words once more to convey what he wanted. Such a way of speaking had caused problems in the past; problems he’d settled through violence and bloodshed, yet now he was a member of Salsola and he knew that he should expand upon his speech to avoid misunderstandings; especially since the way he spoke occasionally came across as disrespectful, but he was stubborn and stuck to what he was comfortable with. But will Eris take offence? He could only wait and assess the others response to know the answer.

Tilting his head up, he closed his eyes and simply took in the scents and sounds that surrounded him. A gently breeze moved across his fur, ruffling the layers of clothes that covered his ruined body.

my road to hell is surely paved

Though the idea that one who so physically overpowered her would bow his head and show submission was utterly new to Eris, she hid her surprise well, disguising it behind a mask of pleasure. There was a nearly imperceptible inclination of her head, the only indication she made that he might relax in her presence. She did not comment on their surroundings further, however, and instead smiled, stepping toward Janos and to the side of him, turning her back toward him as she slowly made her way toward the wall where he had been standing. There, she turned again, rather slowly, and leaned back against the wall, shifting her eyes to the space beside her.

“Only a moment of your company,” the hybrid said, that pleasant sweetness still present in her voice, though now it had become overripe, very nearly souring in the air. She would require a moment of his company for now, and more later, but right now it would be more important to ascertain his loyalty. The shadow-furred woman did not know him so well; he spoke far less than his amiable and outgoing partner, who didn't seem to cease talking once he'd grown comfortable enough in Eris's presence. Janos had remained stoic and silent, however, and it was a continuation of this she saw in him during their group meeting. The sable-furred woman did not mind if he wished to remain an outsider to their close midst, so long as he served the pack, but she needed to ascertain that he would not turn on them.

A flutter in her belly began, but she quelled it as best she could. Her shorter stature was dwarfed beside the larger canine. Though she was not so coyote as to show it, whatever wolfish thing Janos was, it was far larger than where she had gotten her stature. “I don't ask so much of you two in return for your stay -- just that you and Bastion would indulge yourselves in dealing with those who would threaten Salsola,” she said. It was a straightforward request -- the scars across the man's face did not lie, and regardless of whether they were earned through combat or abuse, they and his stature spoke of fearsome ability. He was strong, in any case, and likely to scare the piss out of anyone who crossed them. Bastion, on the other hand, was a weapon of deceit. Even his youthful and childish demeanor, however, did not mask the monster beneath for so long -- those that would pose a threat to Salsola would learn soon enough. “It isn't so bad to be asked to do what you do best,” the coyote said, smiling faintly. This was her duty, as well -- she would tie them together and bond them through fire and ash and blood and all else that the pack demanded to remain cohesive.
