Yey!

After all the days upon days of travel, he and Liliana had finally reached the Great Tribe. As soon as Nayati saw the smoke from the fires rising up into the sky he had spurred Iye to a gallop to finish off the final distance quickly. His heart pounded heavily in his chest. The Utina wondered if his family had changed any in the year that he had been gone. How were his little brothers doing? And his little sister? Oh, he couldn't wait to see all their faces again. When they reached the village the stallion's pace was forced to slow but Nayati easily navigated the way back to the Utina family hut. The closer they got the stronger the scents of his mother and father became. He thought he might weep from the joy of it all. When he and Liliana dismounted he had rushed eagerly into the hut and his mother and father had exclaimed in utter surprise at the sight of their firstborn son. There were many hugs, and then he introduced Liliana as his mate and the hugs continued.

The four of them talked for some time and Nayati waited until he could sense that Lili was comfortable before he stood and said he was going to go out and look for his little siblings. As he left the hut though, his thoughts were intent upon his little sister, Sunki. Of course he wanted to see Sewati and Cha'tima as well, but he was more eager to reconnect with Sunki. She had not taken his departure from the Great Tribe well and he had always been protective of her. Hopefully she had forgiven him, or if she hadn't yet, that she would now. Nayati followed his nose and did his best to track his sister down through the hustle of the Great Tribe village.

The white mare breathed anxiously, eying her mistress's hand. She saw the cloth and whinnied at the pale woman holding it and a makeshift bridle. Sunki smiled at her beloved horse, who was older than her, but they were still close friends. As close friends as they could be. Sunki depended on the mare and the mare depended on her; they were connected. She drapped the cloth over the mare's white back, and gently eased her into the bitless bridle. The mare's ears flickered and she pawed the stable's ground in anticipation of a long ride. However, it was going to be a short one; Sunki had work to do. Leading the pretty mare, the equally pale woman took the path around the hut of her parent's and she heard voices. Her eldest brother's was what surprised him, and some female's voice. Before she could enter, Sunki mounted her horse in a flurry and rode past the fires.

Her brother was back, and Sunki did not have it in her to meet him just yet. She was stubborn as a mule whenever it came to decisions. Her last words to him had not been happy ones. Why would she be thrilled her brother, her eldest sibling, leave the Great Tribe to journey to the branch tribe? Donoma gave a soft whinny at her rider, feeling her frustration, her sadness. Then the two ran through the trees, dodging them the way only the mare could, her body lithe and agile. Sunki held on tight to her horse, whispering in her ear. But their run with the wind had to end soon enough, and the woman found herself having Donoma walk past neighbors and friends and their fires. Several looked at her and called out greetings, and she waved cheerily at them, betraying none of her unease. She had to face Nayati sooner or later.

Of course he found her first. Even as she leaped off her horse, she saw the familiar colors of her brother. Sunki patted Donoma's slightly sweaty neck, taking her by the bridle gently toward the stable. The loop of oiled rope was slipping out of her hands, palms sweating from the tightness of her grip. "Nayati," she said simply, giving him a weak smile. Oh, she was still not pleased. Donoma beside her exhaled loudly at the name, eying the man who had given her to her pale mistress.

Leaving the Great Tribe had been the most difficult decision Nayati had ever had to make. He had troubled himself over it for days and nights until, with Onawa's help, he had finally decided to leave. His parents hadn't been thrilled with the prospect, but they had understood and given their son their well wishes. His little brothers hadn't been so broken up about it, still young a head-strong. Nayati had had a feeling they were actually excited to have the chance to prove themselves and step out from behind the shadow of their elder brother. Sunki though...Sunki had taken the news worst of all and he had felt his heart bleed at her angry words. The Utina loved all his family, but there had always been a special place in his affections for his little sister. He had always felt that she needed his protection more than anyone else and he had to admit he had likely spoiled her on more than one occasion. While he would roughhouse with Sewati and Cha'tima and sternly guide them towards the right path, he had sheltered Sunki under his wing and treated her as a rare flower. He never should have expected her to understand, but he hoped that now she could forgive him.

When he finally tracked her down, he found her sliding off the back of the lithe and beautiful horse that he had gotten her for first birthday. Before she even spoke he could feel that she was still unhappy with him, an unnatural distance spanning between the two siblings. Nayati wanted nothing more than to go up to her and wrap her in a tight embrace, but he held back, fearing that Sunki would pull away from him. The hunter smiled hopefully at her nonetheless. "Awiusdi." It was his little pet name for her. Perhaps it would help to melt the frost that still surrounded her heart concerning him.

Nayati smiled at her in that way he always had. It brought back memories from before he had left, the way he would grin at her and tease her in that innocent way. She remembered when he first led the white mare to him, bridle across her face and back bare out of her stall in the stable. When he refused to tell her exactly what he had traded to get the mare for her, she had given him a strong embrace. Of course that had been brief, since she had rushed to the mare's neck to stroke it, getting the mare used to her scent. Sunki scratched the side of the mare's long face, the horse bobbing her head slightly. Now Nayati did not hug her, and she was a little conflicted. She wanted a hug from her brother but also was still not terribly pleased.

"Osiyo, Vginili," she said in greeting. Sunki was not cold but she was only as warm as she could muster, remember her sense of abandonment when Nayati had left. "I didn't know you were coming." She wanted to hug him, but still, still her stubbornness refused to let her drop Donoma's reigns and run at him. Her grip on the reigns tightened as she fought back her desire. After all, he had been gone a long time and she was just as family oriented as the rest of the Tribe. It was good to see him.

Everything about her seemed the same, and yet was so different at the same time. She hadn't really grown much and yet the way she carried herself spoke of how she had matured in the year since he had been away. There were also markings across her forehead and around her arms, the purple standing out starkly just as the blue did on his own coat. Sunki was a woman now, no longer a child, but nothing would ever stop her from being his little sister. His "little deer". Nayati remembered playing with her when she was still so little, how he would always call her that when they would play hide and seek. Sunki had always been quick and dainty just like the does in the heards of deer that he hunted. The Gadui Kanati wasn't prone to giving pet names; he reserved them for the people who were closest to his heart.

She spoke to him so formally and he couldn't deny that it wounded him. Nayati had deeply hoped that her feelings of resentment would have faded by now, that she would have grown to understand or at least accept his choice. There was so much news to tell her, yet he did not know how she would react to it. Would she be happy, like he hoped? Or would she see it negatively, other reasons for her brother to stay away? "There was no way to send word ahead." If only there were a way to communicate more easily between the two tribes; it would make the distance seem less great. Nayati hesitated for a moment, his body language far from his usual poise and confidence. "It does my heart good to see you, sister." Even though it broke it that things were not as they had been before.

Sunki nodded as she faced Donoma's large, soft brown eye. The mare pressed her mighty head against the woman's in comfort. The mare was clever as a horse could be, but it was definitely Una's presence the woman wanted right now. The doe never showed herself in the Tribe camp, though she often did show herself to Sunki. The doe was wise and her advice was always sensible, always calm. Una was never skittish and she always seemed to know best. But she was no where to be found, probably off teasing a buck in the woods. The Utina sister looked at her sibling, cheek against Donoma. "No, I guess not, brother." The mare whinnied, her lowed starting to show.

She dropped the reins, knowing the mare was going to stay on the spot. Sunki lightly scratched her nose as she walked up to her brother. A few scant feet from him, she stopped, fists clenching. "You know, I missed you, Nayati," she said softly, ignoring her horse's heavy steps toward a clump of grass by the edge of a fence. Sunki gazed at the man with her bright blue eyes, knowing they shared that much, even though his colors had been more grayscale while she had inherited some strange blond hues.

Rushing to her brother, Sunki held tightly onto him, pretending she did not have tears at the corners of her eyes.

Sunki was not the only one wishing for the advice and guidance of their Spirit companion at that moment. Nayati also desired Onawa's strong wisdom, but he knew that she would not come. She had been excited that they were back in the Great Tribe as well and had quickly left to stalk the familiar grounds as soon as they had reached the village. The Utina didn't fool himself though, he knew that the puma would be well aware of his desire for her presence and was purposefully keeping her distance. In his head he could even hear the exact thing she would say to him: "There are some things you must do yourself." Apparently, this was one of those things. He and his sister would have to work things out themselves, one way or another.

Nayati held his breath as Sunki dropped the lead rope and walked closer to him, his pale sky blue eyes watching his younger sibling carefully. He half expected her to punch him in the arm—or someplace worse—due to the way her fists clenched at her sides when she stopped some feet from him. "I missed you too, Sunki." More than she knew, perhaps more than she could believe. Their matched eyes connected and he waited in strained silence to see which way the winds would blow her.

Then she ran to him and her skinny arms wrapped tightly around his muscular torso. Nayati's arm's immediately hugged her smaller frame and held her just as tight, if not tighter. His own eyes closed and he could feel the sting of tears near the corners of them. This moment meant more to him than any other he would have on this return. He knew this deep in his soul.

She couldn't help it as the tears started to flow down her face. It had been so long since she had seen her brother, and the time had taken its toll. But Nayati had barely changed; there were differences, but not enough to really change the man in her eyes. She had noticed his chest, painted with the antlers of a hunter, probably the sign in AniWaya for the master. Sunki had painted her own face and arms when she became a priest, knowing that she could not advance further with the master rank taken in the tribe. It was a modest body paint, but she held it in high regard. If she ever became a master, which was unlikely, then she would find a way to add more to her paints.

Sunki pulled away from her brother only enough to look at him. She shot him a glare and then gently hit her fists against his muscled chest; it wouldn't hurt - it was more for show anyway. "Don't you stay away for so long next time, alright? What am I supposed to do? Look up to Sewati and Cha'tima?" She scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Not likely." Donoma wandered up behind the white woman and put her muzzle into the embrace, nudging for a treat from the familiar face, albeit fading in her memory. The horse lipped at the man's braids, playfully greeting him.
