Set in The Ruins in Borgata Colotl just before twilight after Tayui's meeting with Sirius (so she would smell like him a bit). Tayui is in lupus. (WC: 322)

put my heart back in my hand and wipe it clean

After her chat with Sirius, Tayui had taken some time to think about what he’d said. Although she had initially rejected his offer of freedom, thinking it to be only more chains (which it was), the later subject of their discussion greatly appealed to her. If she could become the Sapienza of this pack, then she would again have an opportunity to learn more and continue meeting others. Certainly, it would not be under the best circumstances, but perhaps she could learn a bit more about what had happened to her daughter Noir and what was now happening to her.

Sirius had mentioned another wolf in the pack, Janos, who was a go-between for the Sapienza and the pack. Tayui wasn’t sure where to find him, but she figured The Ruins would be a good place to look. It was a hub of activity which acted as the agora of the pack. She hoped that even if she did not find him here, she would find someone to ask.

She had found Darijus wandering around in The Ruins, likely attending to some matter or another. She had questioned him and he had replied quietly, with his eyes to the ground, that Janos was likely to be about. He didn’t know where and apologized for it, but Tayui was happy to know that at least some of the other members knew the wolf was around. Salsola was large enough to hide away if one really wanted to.

Tayui trotted toward The Ruins and began poking around. She made a slow ring around them, but saw nothing for the time being. She decided to step out of The Ruins and send out a quick howl asking Janos to meet her there. She raised her head and let out a quick, low series of howls. When she was done, she sat down and waited, hoping either for a response or an appearance by the male.

Freedom…. Such a thing was foreign to him, like an old friend that had long since left him for bigger and better things and had long since moved on, leaving him with only a vague remembrance of what it was like. No, he had not been free in so long but that was okay with him. His life now was far better than it had been in the past with his master that even though he dictated his life, it was a life that he wouldn’t give up for anything if he could help it. He would fight to preserve his master and preserve the small cherub that had claimed him. The burn mark on the back of his neck said as much and it was this that fingers often ghosted over, easily found given how different burned fur felt rather than the fur around it which was a cloudy gray color. It was a welcome scar rather than the other marks that ran around his body, skinning him in places, making it easy to see the pink skin underneath. Most of these were covered up by the clothing that he put on like he was doing right at the moment, his fur still trying to dry from his morning shower that he had stolen away from his master to go and take. He wanted to stay fresh though since it was a luxury not given to him when he was a part of the slave trade world.

It was a pleasant sort of day out, and better since he was alone but close enough to the pack that he could hear the whines and commands of his master without too much work but today he had to go out and hunt. It was necessary though in order for them both to be happy and healthy so he looked over to his dagger and picked it up, sliding it onto a belt before buckling it around his hips. Oh sure he could transform and he would have his teeth and claws but in a sudden fight there was no time to think about it and he didn’t like to be anywhere without the dagger since to him it was a sign that he was a free man in that sense. He could defend himself against someone coming in for the attack and not have to worry about any sort of lash from the whip for doing what it was that he wasn’t supposed to be doing. Strong legs carried him back up the embankment from the water, shaking his head before he ran a hand through the white hair, fluffing it back up in the back away from his brand. The motion flashed his Salsola mark on his ribs and he gave a little sigh, readying himself to go out and about. When he went to go and spy on the other packs he was going to have to bind his sides to avoid his mark coming out. He had to pick a pack to go and look at though. Just as he was about to go out a call came out over the lands and he frowned, turning his head towards the call.

It wasn’t the first call though and he gave a snort, recognizing that it was calling for him. Throwing a last glance to where he knew his love to be, he then turned back around and he started to go on his way, loping as he got into a good stride and rhythm. The boogeyman of the pack, he was one of three and one who enjoyed a happy, comfortable relationship and position in the pack. Of course his position could be pulled from him at any moment but there was a fierceness in his eyes that was startling for one as submissive as he. The tattered remnant of his ear picked up the last of the series as he came into the area where Tayui was. He began to search for someone that had called him when Darijus told him that someone was looking for him, a female. Nodding his head in thanks, the arbiter walked off in a slow and purposeful stride where not a single movement was lost. The ruins were one place that he hadn’t really looked at too much or too deeply, preferring not to get lost in the deep, dark stretch of buildings. He came across Tayui at long last, slowing before he approached her. By her scent she wasn’t quite as high as he was and so by law wasn’t required to show her as much respect but he still gave her a little bow of his head as he approached her, stopping just outside of her immediate reach in case this wasn’t a pleasant meeting.

”Were you the one who called me?” He asked her in his low, neutral voice, not a single emotion portrayed on his scarred face. He turned his head a little to the right so that he could see her, wanting to be able to see her clearly not half-fuzzy. He could have just squinted his eyes at her but that wasn’t something that he particularly wanted to do. It was easier for him to do it this way since there was less of a chance of him getting a headache and it was far too early for him to cry sick and go lay down. He waited for an answer, taking his ease in front of her. She didn’t seem to be in any sort of mood to fight with him so his gaze came back to face her head on, both his fuzzy and his normal eye looking at her, both his tattered and his normal ear training his hearing on her. Part of him wasn’t too happy about having to meet with someone in such a place like this but it was a silly thing for him to not like. It was out in the open with plenty of places for him to go if something went wrong so he relaxed, the neutral male easing his friend nerves.

put my heart back in my hand and wipe it clean

She couldn't tell for how long she waited. She always had trouble keeping track of time when she waited for someone, for the more anxious she was, the longer she seemed to wait. She wasn't sure what to expect, so luckily she did not feel like her heart had been grasped by an iron hand. She meandered through The Ruins, poking around to see what she could find. She trotted up a few old stone stairs and then turned around and descended down to the front of The Ruins. As she looked at the cobbled stones, she wondered if it could even be called the 'front' of the building, or if it had decayed so much that any semblance of direction -- front, back, or side -- had been lost.

Soon enough, she caught the scent of someone approaching. She could tell it was an Arbiter of the pack and hoped it was Janos. She knew nothing of his rank; only his name. After a few more seconds of waiting, she heard the sound of the wolf approaching. It echoed around her and throughout The Ruins. Then the wolf appeared, a tall male dressed as much in a coat as he was scars, too. Tayui tried not to stare, knowing that she had once been so conscious of her single scar, but was somewhat unsuccessful. She trotted closer, wondering how she might greet him if he was in his Optime form and she in her Lupus. She dipped her head low and kept her ears folded back and her tail at a standstill. Since she could not greet him the way she normally might, with a quick lick to his chin, she hoped this would suffice.

When he asked if she was the one who called, she replied quickly and politely: I am. She kept her eyes low, but felt like she was mumbling to herself with her head turned down and the other luperci towering above her. I spoke with Sirius. He said to come to you since you're the Informatore and I hope to be the Sapienza. If you have the time, would you like to sit down to talk? She craned her neck to look up at him as she spoke, squinting a bit into the fading light.

He had come as fast as he cared to go, taking his time but not going slow enough that it would take him forever to reach the ruins. Rather, it was more or less how to find her once he got there but fortunately for him the female seemed to be right where he could easily find her. He was usually always in his optime form as he was now, finding that this form was the easiest to move around in and it made him more imposing, something crucial to his job and to his rank. The male was a towering figure, something possibly right out of some horror show, especially if he was portrayed like the beast that came from the shadows, a dark figure that was hell bent on destruction. But that kind of thing was beyond him at this point and he had no want or will to do to others what had been done to him. Of course, if he was pushed he would be like any other male he was sure and he would attack. But for the most part, he was reined in, his scars and his general overall appearance doing what he needed them to do. It got him a comfortable job in the ranks scaring people that got too close and spreading nasty rumors about the Salsola that just weren’t true.

As he approached the femme, he hadn’t ever seen her before but instinctively he knew that she was in a lower position than him, a strange thought indeed. To think that someone was below him at all was something that he had never even considered happening. He was a slave, a nobody and yet someone was required to give him the courtesies required for everyday pack life. The female began to approach him with her steadied gait, and eyes watched as she assumed the proper niceties, treating him as his rank prescribed. Still he would never get used to the way that she approached him, entering into his personal bubble. She stopped a little away from him, just outside of the boundary of his comfort zone luckily and she seemed to be showing the proper respect to him. Ordinarily there would have been more to the ritualistic greeting but this served him just fine. He didn’t much care for people getting close to his neck no matter how much of a submissive sign that was. Scars lined his neck in horrific amounts, the sight held away by his scarf that was open a little in the back to allow the one scar to shine through. The mark of his master was always there, an omnipresent reminder that he was never as free as he might think or others might think. Her submissive form put him at ease, the arbiter glad that she knew her place so that he didn’t have to put her there. Rather she seemed to be a knowledgeable and polite female so he decided that he would hear her out.

Polite tones rang out from the female, and he gave a nod of his head in acknowledgement. She had been looking for him and she had found him. The only thing was that it was very hard to be able to hear her since she was talking to the ground but he withstood it for a little longer. Her words drifted up but his ears had to prick forward to catch the low sounds. He was certainly trying to get the informatore rank and he had to talk with someone like this female who was trying to be the sapienza, the other half to the spying circle. Nodding his head with the words, he looked into the shadowy depths before he turned and started walking towards the ruins. ”Follow me,” he said to her in his low voice before he let the darkness close around him. Not only was he able to see better but it was also much cooler down here and would be far more pleasurable to talk in. He led the way in just a little bit, letting his nose lead him to the place that smelled the least like earth and more like the damp rocks that made up the inside of the ruins. In the middle of the room there were a couple boulders that had fallen from the ceiling, scattering light in the room while also providing a place to sit. He walked into there and sat down before looking to see if the other luperci had followed him. If she had, he would dip his head to her lightly. ”Look up at me when you’re talking now, it is much harder to hear you if you’re talking to the ground,” he said to her, feeling a bit uncomfortable too with all the deference to him. It was what made him special he supposed. ”If you’re going to be the Sapienza, then we are going to need to talk about how you would get a hold of me. Do you have any ideas?” He asked the female as he shifted on the stone, crossing his legs one over the other in a picture of ease. But beneath that mask was a tough Janos who was ready to fight or do whatever it took in order to get out of this situation if it turned bad. It wasn’t saying that he was afraid of her or anything, it was simply precautions.

put my heart back in my hand and wipe it clean

He responded with a nod and a demand. She obliged, but not necessarily as willingly as she would have liked. She didn’t want to go into The Ruins now – she’d rather sit outside and enjoy the breeze as the world cooled down. But since she was the one seeking his help and he was the one who was apparently a higher-ranked wolf, she would have to follow him whether she liked it or not. She paused and let him get a head start before she slowly followed him into the crumbling building. She moved quickly and quietly, not trusting this wolf enough to follow him with complete abandon. She didn’t know who he was or what his motivations were; all she had was a name, a face, a scent, a rank, and a co-rank. She didn’t know what made him who he was and this put her on edge. She didn’t like owing favours, especially to unknown characters.

As they ventured deeper in to The Ruins, she felt the temperature fall and the smell of rotting greenery fell away. Janos took a seat on a rock and Tayui followed in a half-circle to take her place on a nearby rock. She stepped onto a jutting floorboard supported by a small tree and then nimbly leapt on to a smooth boulder. She saw him dip his head, but was too busy finding a good place to sit comfortably while looking relaxed and feeling overly alert.

She flicked her ears forward when he began to speak and then frowned. A lecture, really? She was twice his age and she could speak up or down if she so liked. She tried to relax her features, but all she could think of were trite responses, and she hoped it did not reflect on her expression. She had looked up when she’d spoken the second time, but maybe he was just hard of hearing; she didn’t know. With all those scars and half an ear, she reasoned that it was likely he’d lost some of his senses here and there.

She glanced from his broken ear back to his maw as he spoke again. This time, he had something she could respond to, and since it was the reason she’d sought him out, she was glad they weren’t dawdling.

I can read and write in English, she replied slowly, and I can speak a bit of low-speech. I was working on a way of writing down the low-speech years ago, but I’ve since abandoned the project. If you can speak the lesser languages, we might be able to communicate with an animal. That would be useful, too, if we could find a bird to carry messages, she explained. She kept it simple and tried not to embellish too much. She didn’t bother mentioning the ghost crow who’d once kept her company; while she thought he would be an excellent messenger, he wasn’t very reliable, and it would be a difficult idea to explain if he refused to believe in ghosts.

Perhaps she didn’t want to go into the ruins but he was thankful that she at least obliged and followed him. He didn’t really want to get into an argument and be hurt if he didn’t need to be and honestly didn’t want to deal with the issues in case he got in trouble for fighting on pack lands. There really was no need for it really so he would avoid it at all costs. The arbiter was a higher rank than her even if it was only a by a little but she had known that when she approached him. Perhaps he was a bit on edge the way that he wanted to get into a place where they could talk without being spied on but it was that he wanted to come inside because on the outside there were too many scents, too many sounds that he wouldn’t have been able to focus securely on their conversation that even though those members of Salsola wouldn’t run their mouths surely, there might always be someone working from the outside, looking to memorize faces so that they would have a much harder time in getting a hold in the other packs. Perhaps though this was just paranoia setting in but one didn’t survive long in a situation like he had found himself without being cautious and being wary of anything and everything that even so much as breathed.

He didn’t mean for his words to come out so harsh and brittle sounding. The truth of the matter was that he didn’t have much in the way of good socialization skills and she just happened to bear the brunt of it. And of course it didn’t help that he was a male rough around the edges. So he really didn’t mean to chide her like she was some pup. Even he could tell that that wasn’t the case with her and looking up he saw the frown, making him wondering just what the other was thinking. It was not his intention and indeed he had a hard time figuring out what he had said. But then she seemed to smooth out her features even though the sharp scent of disapproval was still in the air. Perhaps he had offended her in some way? He would have to be careful from now on and he seemed to lower his head a little bit more. Even though he was of a higher rank she was older than him and in the pack, age and rank were both very important, all but evening out the odds perhaps in the playing field. He felt bad since it was something that he really should have been thinking of before but it was too late for him to take it back now and perhaps it was for the better that they just get down to working. If she hated him then she would not like him no matter what he did but he would still do his job to the best of his abilities.

Her words hit him and he gave a thoughtful sound with the words. English was one of those languages that he had picked up during his time of captivity because it was a simple language and yet one that not everyone knew because it was not the accepted language of the masses. Communicating with animals would be a good way to keep out of the way of enemy sensors, especially since he was gentle enough that animals tended to like him anyways. Perhaps they just sensed a kindred spirit in the man enough that they were okay with being around him, trusting him almost completely, a foolish thing by many other’s standards but they didn’t care. He gave a thoughtful sound. A bird would be even better but it would take time to get it to be used to both of them in order to find them since he was usually on the go and if she gained her own co-rank then she was going to be doing her own things and wouldn’t be able to be back at Salsola to have a bird that they took that would simply fly home later on. It would be easier though because then that would mean that they could communicate long distances. ”I am able to speak the lesser languages and I have been able to for a while now so that would work out for me. A bird would be helpful definitely. Do you have one in mind or would that be something that we would need to find?” He asked her, being consciously more careful of his words to keep them neutral and to hopefully keep her from really getting angry at him. He needed her as much as she needed him so he was going to try his best to make sure that this worked.

Tayui nodded slowly in response as she spoke. She was genuinely surprised to hear that he too spoke the lower languages. He didn’t really strike Tayui as someone who might know that sort of thing; however, she also didn’t know if there was a “type” of canine that would be knowledgeable of lowspeech. While Tayui was not as proficient at it as she once was, she hoped she could at least communicate enough with a smaller mammal to explain her situation. All she had to do was explain her needs and then identify the canine, which would be Janos. But if they both spoke to a bird at the same time, perhaps it would remember them and understand its task. The question now was figuring out how to convince a wild bird to do their bidding. She knew humans had trained their animals to do such things, but she didn't know how.

Tayui wasn’t too sure what he was thinking when he spoke, but he seemed calm enough. She took this as a sign of at least a willingness to work with her. While she had a better poker face now than she had in the days of her youth, she still had a sense of brazen entitlement which meant she often wanted to show others what she was feeling, sometimes because she felt they ought to know, and other times because she didn’t care. This wolf clearly had a stronger reign on his emotions, for she felt like she was hitting a blank wall every time she looked at him.

We would need to find a creature to facilitate this, she replied evenly. I don’t know any, but I know humans used pigeons for their messages, and pigeons often lived in human cities. Maybe we could find one there and offer it a reason to work with us, she explained. I doubt they’ll do it for free. If we can find something they want, it could work.

Perhaps it was a bit strange for someone like him to be speaking the lower languages but he did so with ease and he certainly wasn’t ashamed by it. It was the language of the masses after all. When one was alone for a long period of time with only the so-called lower creatures, it becomes second nature to try to find companionship wherever you could. And some of them were actually really intelligent creatures, something that he hadn’t been expecting oddly enough and he wondered why no one else took the time to learn the other languages. But for the information sector of the pack, it was much better this way after all. Actually he was pleasantly surprised that she knew it. It really wasn’t common and for someone that hadn’t been through what he went through he had to wonder what her past was like. She certainly didn’t bear the scars like he did but that meant nothing. Everyone suffered in their own way and it sparked his interest to see just what had happened or how she had come about learning the language. It could have been something simple like she just wanted to learn it because she felt as though it would be a neat thing to learn or maybe her family specialized in that or there were many other reasons why she would know the low common speech and while he was interested he wouldn’t say anything yet.

Yes, getting an animal to do what they said would be the difficult thing. He had heard stories long ago that animals such as pigeons and other small creatures were used for this purpose but it only served to bring up the question of how in the world they managed to do that. Honestly, Janos didn’t mind her. She seemed to be pleasant enough now that they had simmered down and were talking and even though he may have been predisposed to violence it wasn’t like once she proved herself fine to hang around with that he would suddenly fly off the handle and besides this had consequences for him too and he needed this to work out just as much as she did after all. Giving a little thoughtful sound as she spoke, he seemed to be thinking hard about what the lesser creatures would want from the wolf kind that they wouldn’t be able to find for themselves. Nodding his head slowly, he seemed to still be deep in thought. She was right of course but the matter still stood that he had no idea of how to coerce one of the animals into helping them with their endeavors. ”Right but the question now is what would animals want that we could tempt them with?” He asked as he gave a thoughtful sound, reaching a hand up to run through his hair before he let his hand fall back to his lap, his messy white hair falling back in front of his face. ”We could offer them free food but I’m not too sure where we would find all that food for them,” he said softly.

He had a point. She couldn't think of anything that they could offer the animals that they could not achieve on their own. But there lies the rub: even if an animal could reasonably acquire food on its own, free food given to it was preferable because it did not require the hunting or any work on their part. She did not think they could necessarily tempt a very smart animal, such as a fox, but they could probably train a bird much in the same way the humans had. She knew that the smarter animals would be able to use their sense of reason and instincts much the same way the luperci did, so that was not a viable option. While they could lure a cougar once with food, that would be the end of it. Even if they promised food upon delivery, the cougar had no reason to co-operate. So, they needed to find an animal that was intelligent enough to understand simple directions, but not so smart that it could figure out why they were doing this.

Her first thought were birds. If humans had trained them to do their bidding, logically, luperci could do the same. Perhaps it wasn't so much about offering incentives, but identifying the incentives and then structuring their training in such a way that eventually the animals would want to perform the tasks.

Maybe it's not offering them food, but training them first with food and then removing it. Humans did this, somehow, so logically, we should be able to do the same. We can't always offer them food, but maybe we could do something to make them think they'll get food. If we can convince them to perform a certain task, we'd need to figure out how to train them to keep doing that task whether or not we have food. I'm just not sure how, she admitted. But there has got to be a way. She frowned in concentration and then added: maybe we could ask someone who knows more about animals. It's all about motivating the animals to do what we want, so we need to ask someone who understands animals better. Do you know anyone like that?

Small animals were always easiest to coerce into doing what was expected of them but some had proved to be smarter than others and proved to be a challenge when trying to make them into your dutiful little followers. Foxes were cunning little things indeed and would prove to be the hardest to try to make sit down and talk to them much less do anything else like make them help with gathering information or relaying it. That and many small creatures simply had too much of an ability to get easily distracted, something that could prove to be a liability more than ever. After all, if the carrier of your letter all of a sudden disappeared because of some other scent trail or something else that popped up in front of them then that could prove to be a problem. So he hoped that this female would have something that they could do to rectify this issue. He wanted to be able to have everything lined up for him but this was one of those things that he was going to have to figure out what to do. He watched her with his sharp eyes, tilting his head lightly so that he could see her better through his unclouded eye, waiting for an answer. Even some prey animals like rabbits, that could blindly follow orders were huge prey items and so would likely be picked off. It would have to be a creature that was not too smart, not too dumb, and neither too high nor too low on the food chain to be able to interact with them and be able to successfully complete their jobs.

Much time had passed since he had had to think about things like this. Interacting with such things as the carrier pigeons were distinctly forbidden given that if a slave were to get a message out then that could be very bad so he really had no past experiences with things like this. He gave a little sound and nodded his head as the other spoke, wondering how to do it himself. It just seemed to be so difficult and he would need someone to at least help him with it. It was too big of a job like that and if his master decided to help him he wouldn’t be able to keep one of the animals alive long enough to do anything with it. But that was just the way that his cherub was and thinking about him was enough to make his brand prickle and his lips want to curve up into a smile but with the lack of practice with such a motion, his lips stayed in the frown. She then mentioned asking someone else and he gave a little thoughtful sound as if genuinely trying to figure it out but he then shook his head. It wasn’t like he knew about everyone in the pack as of yet and he was still admittedly doing his best to try to keep himself away from everyone who wasn’t someone of dire importance to his continued success within the pride. ”No I don’t. Do you by any chance?” He asked with a little thoughtful sound as his good ear twitched, his tail lightly moving as he thought.

I think we're close to being finished? Smile Thanks for the thread! WC: 301

In the end, all she had were good ideas. She had plenty of ideas on the theory, but actually getting out and finding an animal to use to train was the toughest part of this all. It relied on a third party: an element which neither of them could fully control. But meeting at a halfway point somewhere in the neutral lands would take too long and was too inefficient, so Tayui didn’t want to do that. It would be a waste of time when she knew they were both smart enough to figure something out. She wasn’t sure if this was being too optimistic, but she felt as though if the humans could do this, there was no reason they could work it out on their own and find a similar solution.

Tayui could name books to read and theories to follow, but she didn’t have the books, and ultimately, this would be very ad hoc and based on trial-and-error. As long as Janos didn’t mind that, Tayui would be fine with wrangling out some sort of solution. As she spoke, Janos shook his head in response; he didn’t know anyone who could help them out.

Well, she began slowly, maybe we should both try to do some research and then reconvene in a week’s time? We can try to meet new luperci and see if anyone can help us. If you find any books, try to find ones on psychology. If we don’t find anything, we can meet again in two weeks’ time and so on and so forth. Since she wasn’t in a huge hurry, she didn’t see any need for urgency. Maybe later she’d become agitated and want to work on her Sapienza duties, but for now, she just wanted to tackle one problem at a time.

In theory it seemed like it would work but they would need to gather some essentials in order for it to really work and it was slightly worrisome. What if they couldn’t get it in time? Giving a little thoughtful sound with the thoughts running around inside of his head, he continued to watch her, trying to figure out exactly how this would work out for them. He knew that it was necessary and honestly he was excited to get this going because that would mean that he would be one more step ahead to fully making his mark on the pack, steadying himself just as his master and cherub had already done. Meeting in a public place would put another added level of danger to the both of them, especially Tayui. No, to meet somewhere else outside face to face would put in jeopardy their entire mission because all it would take is just one wrong person finding them to ruin everything or worse. They could very well end up being killed if something were to go wrong and they were to be tried by the wrong person. No, it would be best to avoid that situation altogether he felt. So the bird was a good idea but it would mean that they would need to do research, looking around, trying to find out how best to get what they wanted from the middle creature as it was. It would be a joint effort but he felt as though things would end up just fine so long as they worked together.

She began to speak, the speech haltingly slow at first before she seemed to grow more comfortable with whatever she had to say and Janos gave a nod of his head. ”Okay I think that that would be best too,” he said with a nod of his head. There was no immediate need to hurry but if she wanted to be a Sapienza then they were going to have to figure out some way to communicate between packs when she started to go on her trips but until then there was plenty of time to decide that. For now though he would take things one step at a time, getting the animal lined up so that they wouldn’t have to worry about that anymore but first he would go and have a talk with some people, see if he could get some information. Perhaps even his cherub would know something that he could use. Feeling that this meeting was coming to an end, he pushed himself up and looked over at her, giving a little bob of his head at the female before he turned towards the entrance of the ruins. ”Very well then. I will meet you in a week’s time. I will contact you if I have found something earlier and the same for you. I’m not very hard to find,” he said, smiling softly. ”Until next time,” he said as he gave him a little bow of his head again before he turned and loped off, the darkness swallowing him whole once again.

{Exit Janos}
