It's Hard To Tell You

Slowly the giant paced his room, his brain full of thoughts. This morning he had woken up in the state of peace and felt like he was content. The only thing nagging his mind now was his few chance encounters with Kansas as of late. It had been a very long time since the two males had spoken. Not much passed a ‘hello’ or ‘good morning’ had been muttered since that fateful night when the boys had gone out drinking and Kansas had spilled the beans that he had once had sex with Naniko and Lucifer. It had horrified the usually calm giant at that time and it still dug holes into his mind every now and then, planting seeds of anger at the cream male he had once called a dear friend.

Time had passed now though and although the anger still stuck with him Jazper was prepared to start the healing process. He knew that Kansas was a very sensitive soul. His appearance matched his personality in the fact that both the large male had deemed to be a little fragile. However, the tattooed male had been told since birth that he was not to put himself above others regardless of his alpha blood and instincts.

Finally the warrior had enough pacing and marched out of his room and towards Kansas and Savina’s room that lay diagonally on the opposite side of the top floor from his own. Slowing his purposeful walk Jazper began to second-guess himself. What if Kansas wouldn’t accept his apology? What it the pale male was angry with him? It had never occurred to the giant that Kansas might believe that it was he who was a fault. No, they had known each other for far too long for the smaller male not to accept his apology for sure. Raising a hand to the door he knocked tentatively. "Kansas?"

Sorry about the short.

Kansas was absorbed in a story about a wolf in the Arctic, intrigued by the human author's perception of his kind. As much as he enjoyed the book, he could not concentrate on the words. He was thinking again about Jazper, the valuable friendship he had lost in him. So far, there had been no communication between them other than muffled greetings, which was pitiful progress in the amount of time that had passed. When he reversed roles in the situation between them, he could understand Jazper's rage toward him, and it pained him. It would have taken him a long time to set that kind of thing aside as well. He still could not believe what he had said. It was an outburst of drunken immaturity — had he been sober, he would have been able to contain himself. Some things were better left unsaid.

A knock shook him off the book. He set it aside, brow furrowed; the knock had been heavy, as if created by a large fist, and something told him that it was not one of his boys on the other side of the door. He stood and shuffled sleepily toward the door, opening it and pushing it ajar only enough for him to peer out. There, the gigantic, dark form stood, and Kansas felt his jaws part in surprise. Jazper... he spoke in disbelief. At this point, he would more have expected the man to be knocking out of fury, but there was no anger in his features. W-What do you need? he asked dumbly, opening the door fully and stepping out of the room. His stomach fluttered with nervousness. He hoped this meant something good.

The giant was nervous. Although not a first for Jazper he doubted that the mixed feelings of nerves in his gut would ever be something he would get use to. There was something venerable about the emotion itself. Here he was standing in the doorway of a man he had once called friend, a man he had known since the early days of Crimson Dreams. Although over the years they had both been jealous of one another never had they allowed their personal emotions to break a comfortable friendship until alcohol had been present. Now, after months of not speaking and avoidance, he stood at the door nervous, of all emotions. There was no anger left in the warrior, his alpha blood had run cold in the past few weeks.

As the door swung open and the stuttering man questioned his sudden appearance the coal male, avoiding eye contact, began to open and close his muzzle, words not coming to him with the motion. Not moving as Kansas stepped out, the only thing the giant could say was “Still haven’t grown eh?” The pale wolf was not short, in fact he was very tall for a male but despite his height Jazper still stood over him and was very much broader and more visibly muscled than the other. The Knight had often teased Kansas about his stature, in a friendly and teasing matter of course. It seemed ridiculous that that was all he could muster up in this moment. Suddenly he added, “Lucifer was a good father once upon a time but he was never a good man.” In three years he had learned that his adoptive father had turned into a horrible father to Noah when they left the pack and he had never been faithful to Deuce. Jazper would forever cling to his old memories of his adoptive father, the days where he would go on a hunting trip, finding clothing together, talking about girls. Lucifer had tried his best with Jazper but hadn’t quite had the same impact on the other boys.

Kansas could not deny the barrage of emotion that was welling already as he stared at the beast of a man he had once called a friend. So much had happened between them, and after the unspoken jealousy they had warmed up to one another over some drinks, but Kansas had ruined whatever kind of friendship they shared that very night. He had been too consumed by his guilt to approach Jazper again and apologize with a clear head, and for that he was a coward. Because of that night he did not really expect there to be any reconciliation, but perhaps he was wrong.

For once, the other seemed equally nervous, his jaw parting and closing again. Finally he spoke, and Kansas was surprised to hear a friendly jest at his size. Immediately displaying a grin that was part relief, part amusement, he lifted his arms slightly and examined the well-defined muscles that were nowhere near the bulk of Jazper's. Guess not, he said with a small laugh. Silence lapsed between them until Jazper again surprised the white werewolf with a few words about his father. A sinking sensation seized him as he saw the face of the man he never wished to see again, did not even wish to remember. Kansas sighed and nodded sheepishly. Want to, uh, go for a walk? I need to... check on my horse... That was partially true; he ordinarily went to see Lexington around this time of day, but he also knew that a walk would help ease their nerves as they spoke to one another after so many months of silence.

At the scene of Kansas flexing the large male had to chuckle. Finally they were conversing and the awkwardness was lifted by laughter. Lifting his own arms to compare them to the thinner wolf Jazper couldn’t help but smile, “Ya, I guess not.” It was strange to not talk in subtle anger towards Kansas, for so long it seemed the two were rivals. At one point they had started off weary of each other, each jealous of the other for one reason or another, and they had built a fragile friendship upon that. It seemed that their relationship would always be fragile but at least one of the two would apologize and break the silence every time. Maybe their relationship would never be stable but at least they weren’t killing each other.

At the mention of the horse the giant nodded ever so slightly. Everyone seemed to know that he was not a fan of the horses, which wandered their land safe from harm, nor would he ever be. There was a forced treaty between the beasts and Jazper. Although he believed them to be a good meal and was personally horrible at ridding them, the warrior had to admit that they were a faster mode of transportation, even if it was less satisfying then feeling your own paws against the ground. Stepping out of the doorframe the Knight motioned for Kansas to lead the way, certain that he would keep his distance from Lexington. As they walked Jazper wasn’t quite sure what to say. They hadn’t talked in so long that he didn’t know what was going on in the other males life anymore, even with them living in the same building. “How are you and Savina?” It wasn’t a very complex question but it was something to pass the time by.
