Giuseppe had noticed that the passing of the days was difficult to track without the aid of so-called civilization. Time was tallied by the location of the sun in the heavens and the months counted solely by the rotations of the moon. A more organic system for a more earthy place, he supposed. Time was all relative in the end anyway; it passed and the world continued to age.

All the same, the day of Lemures caught Giuseppe by surprise. Indeed, it was well past noon when he realized the date and its significance. Lemures, a day to honor the dead. On this day the devout honored loved ones who had passed from this life into the next; the superstitious made gifts and wards to keep sinister ghosts at bay. The young Dirigente belonged to neither group - he'd scarcely known his grandparents and was more inclined to believe his senses than folktales. Still, he observed the holiday yearly. Why not? It couldn't hurt, just in case.

So while the sun continued on its downhill journey and the shadows began to lengthen, Giuseppe began meager preparations. He called for the pack to gather here at dusk. Here was an innocuous clearing, not centrally located but not far from town, forest, or beach. Giu chose it for the abundance of firewood - plenty to get a roaring fire going, should they choose. In the remaining daylight, Giuseppe fetched the last of the liquor he'd brought over from Italy and gathered a handful of herbs he knew would turn the fire sweet-smelling.

Tonight's party might be a small and uneventful one, but it would give the members of Insieme time together. Time for stories and memories, and more importantly, time spent in each other's company -- Lemures was traditionally a familial celebration. Finding time left over, Giuseppe began to build a fire as he awaited the pack's arrival.
