The wound on his leg no longer stung like it had during the night. It felt better stretching it out rather than idly laying. He had uncomfortably moved around, switching sides until he fell in a deep sleep. Perhaps it wasn’t just the wound, however. He typically did not sleep in his Optime form, but due to the bandage fit to this form wrapped around his leg, he chose against switching. Had it gone loose, his clumsy fingers probably wouldn’t get it just right. The guys that helped him out had the medical supplies, so he had assumed it was their specialty.

It was now morning. The sun had risen a couple good hours ago, but it wasn’t yet noon. He wore yesterday’s clothes, a simple off-white dress shirt and black trousers. Now sporting a half blood stained bandage on his lower left leg where a cut hid underneath. He shifted his weight over, pausing for a moment. The morning was pretty chilly, but nothing he wasn’t already used to. His golden chain earring gently rustling with the soft breeze as he scanned ahead, mapping for the place he wished to enter.

The forest ahead had been briefly explored by him from another location. This point was a different entrance area, so he remained cautious.

They'd traveled pretty far from the campsite in Drifter Bay now, having been traveling for several hours. He'd gotten up early that morning, long before the sun rose, in an effort to catch breakfast before Eva woke up. He'd had no such luck; as soon as he moved, the little bundle curled against his hip was up and about, chattering excitedly about the new day. He was certain she'd been half asleep at the time, but that hadn't prevented him from taking her with him, to keep her out of trouble; Francois was nowhere in sight, and Reed was just as gone. Markus refused to leave her on her own, so she'd accompanied him on the scavenging mission--and his ears resented it.

"DADDY! Found purple berries!" Eva proclaimed, running up with her chest puffed proudly and a bunch of blue berries hanging out of her mouth. He smiled, gently, and bent down, patting her head to signify a job well done and then took the berries, tucking them into the satchel slung over his shoulder. "Now find red." He instructed, and she yipped, running off eagerly. Markus was careful to keep her within shouting range as he hunted, which made it incredibly difficult to actually catch anything, but eventually found a rabbit colony, and flushed out four of the little beasts without much difficulty. Of the four, he managed to catch three, and hung them by their broken necks from his belt. After a moment of hesitation, he carefully broke off one of their front paws, and tucked it into his vest pocket for later, to stuff and dye for Eva. She needed all the luck she could get.

After a long moment, a figure came into view, and Markus stopped, his eyes narrowed before he barked sharply for Eva. It was a long moment before the little girl rushed up behind him, hiding behind his legs and peering around his ankles at the shape he'd seen.

There was a narrow path to the right he could take. But, the question of what the path had previously been used for to cause such a dent continued to make him wary about traveling there. He wished to take the road less traveled. There, he wouldn’t have to worry about encountering traps that his father often warned him about. Taking a hesitant step forward – flinching at his wounded leg – he quickly paused, flicking his ears forward at the sound of movement.

It didn’t take him long to spot the long haired Optime man and a miniature version below him. She was too young to take any other form, Thomas assumed. He caught himself staring, quickly and awkwardly nodding his head with a hand behind his head and a small, just as awkward smile. They might not be as friendly, however. Or maybe the short man seemed a bit scary as the younger one hid behind the other. That was when it came to him… one of the men who had helped him had a similar appearance to these two. Raising an eyebrow, he slowly began to approach.

“E-Excuse me,” he murmured, stopping a safe distance from the duo. “I don’t mean to… um, be a bother, but… are you familiar with this area?” His words were just tense as he felt, but all the while, he tried to appear friendly.

The other was the first to move, coming toward them hesitantly--limping. Markus' eyes flicked down to the injured leg and back up so quickly it was nearly imperceptible, noting the weakness and acknowledging, in his own mind, that it made the stranger less of a threat. Eva was not nearly so tactful, as the moment she became aware of his injury she forgot all about the danger and bounded forward, going so far as to attempt to jump up on the injured limb. "HI! You hurt. Hurt bad? Daddy fix it. Daddy fix everything." She chattered excitedly, and then, inhaling deeply, "Oh! Smell like Unca! Unca Unca Reedy! Unca Franny-Fran! Unca Uncas fix it. Daddy no fix it. Bad daddy." She twisted around to look at Markus as she said this, and even as he attempted to motion her away from the stranger she continued on, chattering about searching for berries and finding furry friends and learning her colors and everything.

Markus finally gave up on subtlety and strode forward, scooping her up and tucking her under one arm. At the stranger's question, he gave the other male a flat look, one that clearly stated, "No, we don't." Before he turned to walk away. And then, damn him, he hesitated. Canines, even Luperci, alone and injured in the wild were vulnerable. Even more so than pups, in a sense, because no one was expecting them to get into trouble. With a heavy sigh and a hand running over his face, he turned back. "We have a camp. Near Drifter Bay. Come with us." Markus asked, or more likely ordered, and began walking away again, re-directing Eva on her search for red berries. She'd probably come back with black ones, but he wasn't in the mood to correct her, and unless he came across some himself, he wasn't about to show her which was which.

He really was a great father.

The man stood still while the girl came charging at him like a freight train, and for a moment, Thomas felt utterly threatened by a girl not even half his size. He flinched, closing an eye before blinking it back open – almost like a hesitant wink – and watched as she began to chatter about his injury. She asked if he was hurt badly and that her ‘daddy’ could fix anything. His dark brown eyes briefly drew towards the man before he looked back down. His lips parted, but she already began to speak again. ‘Talkative,’ he thought, thinking that she was almost scary in a sense.

The girl rambled, saying he smelt like ‘Unca’, ‘Unca Unca Reedy’ and ‘Unca Franny-Fran’. Was it possible that they knew the men who helped him? He turned to look at the younger man again with obviously pleading eyes for him to explain, but swerved back when he figured he wouldn’t get an answer. “N-No, I’m not hurt… badly,” he spoke, perhaps lying about the long cut. How could he explain that to a kid?

‘Daddy’ came forward, scooping up his daughter and sticking her under one arm. Thomas blinked, leaning slightly back, as he gave him a look that obviously didn’t seem friendly. An eyebrow scrunched and he wore his usual straight face after that, watching as the two were walking away. There wasn’t anything he could do, even if it was rude or that he wished to get an answer. But, he stared after the pair as if knowing they would turn back around.

The black and brown man sighed, turning with a hand on his face and a question sounding much more like a command. He was ordered to follow. Thomas stood there for a moment, wondering why on Earth he would invite him after giving him such a look. Yet, he slowly began to walk after the father-daughter duo.

Eva was slightly disappointed as she was scooped up away from the stranger, but she perked up again as he finally said something, and she went on, completely oblivious to her father's unfriendly attitude. Good! Not hurt and can talk, yay! That was perhaps a little rude, but she hadn't been taught proper manners yet, and even if she had, he hadn't used them anyway, had he? So she didn't have to, either. That made total sense, yes. She opened her mouth to say something else, probably even more rude, but Markus cleared his throat roughly and her eyes were forced up to meet his.

We need red berries, Eva. He said, putting special emphasis on the color, and set her down, watching her run off. She was already aware of the rules; she would stay within shouting distance, and away from anything that was particularly thorny or oddly colored or vein-y--which was pretty much everything, in this place. So far she hadn't gotten into trouble, however, and Markus trusted her--she wasn't a complete airhead. Turning his attention back to the stranger after they'd begun walking, Markus shifted uncomfortably, and then slowed his pace so that he was walking beside the other male, rather than in front of him.

Name's Markus. That's Eva. He nodded toward the bushes his daughter had disappeared through. After a moment, he added, Reed and Francois. They helped you with your leg. Once again, it wasn't exactly a question.

The daughter of the duo wasn’t a threat anymore, she was still a bit… scary in the sense she talked a lot, but she was in her father’s arm. Should she do anything, maybe the unfriendly Afghan Hound-looking man will scold her. Or… maybe not. He could secretly be enjoying his daughter’s mannerism. He blinked, thinking that the ‘can talk’ part of her sentence was a bit much, but didn’t respond to it. She was just a kid, and it didn’t seem like a mother was part of the family. Like his. He wanted to ask, but knew how crude that could be. It could bring back unwanted memories of the past.

He took in a deep breath, pausing as the man put down his daughter, telling her – Eva, apparently – that they needed red berries. His ears flicked, wondering what exactly red berries were used for. Some could heal, others could kill. They weren’t thinking of poisoning him, were they? His dark brown eyes suspiciously glanced towards the anti-social man and away as they begun to walk once again. Little Eva was off getting those berries as her daddy told her to, which ultimately meant they were alone.

Quietly leaning a hand over his muzzle, Thom let out a low cough, perking his ears as the stranger introduced himself as Markus. And, his daughter as Eva. His head slowly nodded, moving his hand back. “Thomas.” He was surprised that this stranger – Markus – knew his saviors. He told him their names. ‘Reed and Francois.’ “Thank you…” He murmured, adding after a moment, “Are they friends?”

The poor stranger, introducing himself as Thomas, looked a bit wary when he sent Eva for red berries. Markus could have explained that Eva didn't like red meat, and preferred to eat berries and grass along with it when they had it, but because it really wasn't any of this male's business, he didn't comment, pretending he didn't notice anything instead. It was surprisingly easy to do. Eva, meanwhile, had found red berries--raspberries--and ran back with them, chattering eagerly around her mouthful as she dropped them at Markus' feet and ran off for more before he could tell her that was plenty. With a sigh, he ran a hand over his face and bent to pick them up, tucking them into his bag.

You're welcome to eat with us, Thomas. Reed won't mind us raiding his medical supplies to change those bandages. Markus glanced down at the bloody rags, and shook his head at the infection risk. They definitely needed to be changed, and he thought there might be some sort of plant that could be made into a salve in the area--aloe? That might be it. That was for burns, he knew, but it had a distinctive numbing quality, and it wasn't that hard to cook and mash leaves into goop. Frowning thoughtfully, Markus thought about sending Eva to look for aloe leaves--but they were far too similar for Eva's untrained eye to tell apart.

Thomas spoke again, and Markus nodded a bit, before adding after a moment, Fran's my brother. You could probably tell.

Eva was back soon enough, dropping a bundle of red berries at the feet of her father, and chatter away before she left once more. ‘Daddy’ didn’t seem too happy about it. ‘The wrong kind?’ Thom watched him lean down and pick up the berries with a palm planted on his face before he put them in a bag. He wondered to himself if it was strange to watch someone’s every movement, but he had always been the observant type due to his undying curiosity.

“Are you sure?” He blurted, once more without thought. They didn’t have to help him, let alone feed him. Hell, he had enough fat on his stomach. He wasn’t the athletic looking type due to the almost beer-belly look he had going on. And, he assumed ‘Reed’ was the black wolf with blue eyes, rather than the one who looked much like Markus. He blinked. ‘Maybe…’

Markus added soon after he asked with a nod, that yes they were friends, but told him that Fran was his brother. They did look alike, the breed characteristics. “I see. I didn’t get their names before…” He quietly explained. Was it some kind of fate that he would run into someone who knew the duo? Shaking his head, he limped on, flinching a bit as the bandage started to unravel.

Markus nodded at the explanation, figuring Fran would forget to introduce himself when faced with an injury. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Thomas wince, and his eyes dropped immediately to the bad leg. The bandages were unraveling, probably from too much activity. It was always better to leave the wound alone when it was bandaged, especially a leg; walking would only make it worse. He stopped and turned, giving Thomas a hard look and cursing himself for forgetting that vital rule. Of course, Thomas was a stranger, so it didn't matter much, but that didn't mean Markus would stand around and let the male bleed out.

It wasn't that hard to bend a bit and stick his shoulder in the other male's stomach--a bit of a belly, he noticed, and hoped Thomas wouldn't be too uncomfortable before remembering he didn't care--before rising and rolling it back, slinging the smaller dog over his shoulder and holding him in place with one arm before he attempted to start walking again.

Attempted being the key word.

He wasn’t exactly paying attention, just trying his best to manage the weight in his legs so it wouldn’t hurt. It would be easier in his Lupus, as he had thought when he first got the wound, but there wasn’t much he could do. He didn’t have the medical knowledge to tend to it himself. So, when Markus came closer towards him, Thom’s eyes automatically widened, backing up a step. He couldn’t move anywhere else, as his leg decided it wasn’t going to listen to him further. The pain rushing from the spot with a shiver as the larger wolf-dog curled around his stomach and heaved him over.

The sudden touch had, of course, shocked the living daylights out of him. He was never touched unless necessary when sick or, at least, he knew that they would. Markus had not given him an ounce of warning. He stayed on his shoulder like that for a couple seconds before he began to struggle, making sure to keep his leg as comfortable as possible, but the bandage continued to unravel onto the ground below until the large cut starting from the end of his knee down to his calf was visible.

“W-What are you doing?!” When was the last time he had raised his voice? He didn’t remember. Or perhaps it was just the blood rushing to his head.

Thomas immediately began struggling, though he didn't move his injured leg much--which was lucky, considering the sensitive place it might have hit were it not injured. Markus was more than used to Eva struggling, and intended to still be used to it even when she was as large as he was, but at the moment Thom's size was an advantage for him. Markus stumbled a bit, and nearly fell over, before he managed to plant his feet and wrap his other arm around the male's legs, holding them as still as he could. The shorter Thomas' surprised and slightly outraged voice did nothing but amuse him.

As of now, that bandage is no good. Walking will only make you bleed out faster. I'd rather not watch you die, especially in front of my daughter. His tone suggested he'd only just thought of this, and was rather ashamed of it, too, but he wasn't going to back down on the issue. He'd become rather good at saying things just by the tone of his voice, with Aisling but Fran especially; they both understood he didn't talk much. Thomas, however, didn't know him well enough to get the hint. Markus decided to explain his spontaneity.

By my count, we've still got another twenty-five miles before we reach the shoreline, and then another ten to cross the river to camp. You're not walking the whole way. He glanced pointedly at the openly bleeding wound near his face, and figured he should wrap it in something before they continued on.

Definitely not the old bandage.

He struggled against the man, who in returned seemed to almost tip over until he got a good grip into the ground. His ears flicked back, teeth uncharacteristically bearing in pure rage. He did not like to be touched. At least, not as he was… it didn’t feel like the gentle hold of his father. And therefore, he rejected it. He parted his jaws, snapping at the man’s long hair but did not aim to do any serious damage. It was a warning, that he didn’t like this one bit.

Markus grabbed hold of his legs, and he relaxed. Not because it was now tolerable, but because the touch stung. It hurt. He was aching already, but the pressure made it worse. His off-white teeth grit against each other, still bared. The Afghan Hound mix began to explain that the bandage on his leg wasn’t any good, and that he wouldn’t like to watch him die… especially in front of his daughter. A good father, perhaps, but Thomas could only think that he didn’t care about him. There was no reason why he would. He just didn’t want to see his child upset. It made sense why he took him in then.

Gulping down, he flicked his ears once more to listen to the man’s words. They were still a good distance away from the camp and they would have to go by water. And, Markus wouldn’t allow him to walk. That much he understood, but why did he have to be carried? Why couldn’t he be… left behind? His lips parted again, this time, he aimed to bite at his shoulder. He wanted to be let go of.

Grabbing his legs was perhaps not the kindest move, but once he relaxed Markus began to let him go, about to suggest an alternative method--it was obvious Thomas wasn't comfortable this way--but then he snapped at Markus' hair, and he felt a bit of his own ire rise. Of course, Thomas was a stranger; they didn't know each other. Markus' usual methods wouldn't work. He would have to be a bit more thoughtful with Thomas. Had he known that Thom was struggling because he thought Markus didn't care, he might have been outraged, or hurt. He wasn't a bad person; not heartless or cruel enough not to care that this male was obviously injured, and needed assistance.

When teeth sank into his shoulder, drawing blood and stinging pain, however, Markus had had enough. He gave an 'Alright, fine,' growl and let go, rolling the injured shoulder to throw Thomas off. He didn't particularly care anymore if it injured the older dog further; he was going to leave him here. Or, he would have, had Eva not returned right then and seen both the wound on Thom's leg and the blood dripping through Markus' chest fur. For a moment, he thought she would be angry; she always got angry when other people were injured.

This time she burst into tears.

Daddy! Eva hurt too, Eva hurt too! Fall down go boom! She whined, and promptly rolled over and made a big show of playing injured, even managing to cry. Those were probably real tears, Markus thought, and as he went over to pick her up and rested her against his injured shoulder, her sobs became heavier, and she attempted to avoid the blood as best she could. Markus shook his head a bit and started walking again, pausing by Thomas and looking straight ahead, rather than at the other male, as he spoke.

You're still welcome to come with us. His tone was stiff, though other than that monotonous, and he started walking without waiting for an answer. He doubted Thomas would be able to walk far without even the small support of a bandage around his leg, and if he could, well, good for him. If he decided to stay behind and wait for a better option to come along, Markus didn't rightly care, and if he broke down and asked to be carried after all...well, Markus wasn't entirely sure he would agree. Not anymore.

His fangs snuck in, drawing blood. It wasn’t the first time he had injured another, but each time, he didn’t know how to react towards it. His lips curled, quickly releasing as Markus threw him off. He landed with a thud, of course. The injured leg re-opened, blood flowing out at quicker rate as he leaned back, his hands extended behind him for support. His ears were pinned back, staring up at the man in distraught. He hurt him. He really hurt him when he had a kid to take care of. Markus was a father, too. It was like another person hurting his own.

He knew he couldn’t be forgiven, especially when Eva came into sight. Tears crawled down her cheeks as she came towards her Dad, holding onto him. Thom could only stare with wide, apologetic eyes. Markus was trying to help. And Thomas let his anger get ahead of him. There was only regret in his choice.

And yet, he still said he could go with them? It only made the guilt worsen. He took in a breath. It wasn’t possible to walk on the same path with them after what he had done. He would not accept someone who had hurt his father. If anyone hurt father… he would rather kill them than help them. Neither of them needed him around, especially Eva. So, he slowly shook his head. “I’m sorry.” His words were but a mumble. It wouldn’t matter if they had heard anyway, would it?

Markus didn't see the head shake, or hear the quiet apology. Eva did, though, peering over her daddy's shoulder. She pouted at the male on the floor, and spoke up, quite loudly, Mis'er Thom-Thom come. Fall down go boom. Her voice was matter-of-fact, and it made Markus pause, because there was also a hint of accusation in her tone. Yes, Eva had learned much from her father; and it was that that made Markus turn around and set her down, murmuring under his breath to find running water. Eva gave him a bewildered look, perhaps wondering how water could run, and then set off, hopefully to find a river or stream.

Markus picked up the dirty, bloody bandage, and balled it up, dropping gracelessly to the ground and sitting Indian-style across from Thomas. Markus watched him, though his glazed eyes looked at and past him at the same time, and it was a long moment before he decided to speak. I might have asked. It was an admission of a mistake, almost an apology, and he focused his gaze on Thom for a brief moment before dropping his gaze to the bandage, stretching it out and grimacing at the grisly look of the thing.

He heard her words, but couldn’t bear to look at either of them. His eyes merely stared out at anything, anyone other than the two he assumed hurt gravely. Had he thought this out like a mature person, perhaps he wouldn’t have reacted in such a childish manner. Sure, he was scared shitless of being in the grip – the trust – of another. But, he should not have done it in that matter. Maybe, if he had explained to this man, the outcome could have been better.

The father-daughter duo talked amongst themselves, Thomas did not pay much attention, secretly hoping it was their decision to leave the bleeding man there. He did not deserve their kindness. Not one ounce. And, not from the start of this. He had caused them nothing but pain in this experience. Or, so he deeply believed. His breathing was shaking, as it had been the whole time he had realized what he had done. Thomas truly felt like he could simply bleed out there, that he didn’t deserve to be healed.

His eyes blinked, looking skyward until a figure clouded that vision. It was Markus standing in front of him and then, he was gone. Or rather, he sat down in front of him with his previous bandage. The thing was a bloody mess by now. Old spots of blood had been long covered with new ones. His eyes closed, as if awaiting his punishment. But, Markus spoke instead. He slowly opened his dark brown eyes.

“N-No…” His voice was unusually shaky. “I-It is not your fault. It… would never be. You just… didn’t know. You didn’t know. And I hurt you for something not even… your fault.” His voice continued to lower and rise with his words. He couldn’t keep himself as level-headed as usual. He moved his hands forward, leaning with the motion and placing a hand over his muzzle. The blood of Markus still lingering there and he couldn’t help but shed a single tear.

And, selfishly, it was not a tear for them, but a tear for his adoptive father.

Markus chose to ignore the feeble way Thomas waved off his apology, studying instead the way he shook and seemed to be shell-shocked, a bit. The Afghan couldn't understand why he would be; perhaps it was the blood loss. Markus' eyes dropped briefly to the bleeding leg and he hesitated a moment before he rose again, carefully folding the bandage into a large rectangle and holding it out to the other male with a serious face. Press that against the worst of it. I'll be back. And he began striding off, sniffing out Eva as well as the Aloe leaves he'd thought of earlier.

He found the leaves first, and stuffed a large handful into his satchel, though they left his hand tingling and slightly numb. He grabbed a few more, just to be safe, and went on to find Eva, who was sitting by a brook, sniffing flowers. Collecting his daughter and a couple thick sticks, about as tall as his knee, he headed back, and set Eva aside with an unspoken order to pay attention as he went to begin the process of wrapping and splinting Thomas' leg.

This time, however, he gave fair warning. I need to wrap that. I've got some numbing herbs here, it'll help with the pain, and a crude splint. I was going to wash that bandage, but if you'd rather just get a new one, we can head to the raft now and get back to camp. Or I can carry you to the stream we found, wash the bandage, splint your leg and leave you here. That was probably the longest sentence he'd ever spoken to a stranger in his life. Or just plain ever spoken.

The bloodied bandage was handed back to him with the instruction to hold it on the worst of the wound. He did not know what part was the worse, but assumed that any place would work. His hands shakily moved the odoriferous, rolled up bandage to the ‘worse’ part of his injury. He applied the pressure, flinching at the pain surging up his spine. Yet, he remained ‘calmed’.

Markus had left after that, and Thomas stared at his injury. It was the first time he actually got a good look at the thing. It was pretty deep and long in length, surely not a small scratch. The time he had gotten the thing, it was too dark for him to see it very well. And it had been bandaged up anyway. With the morning light beating down on him, and the blood oozing from the cut, it was apparent. His lip curled and finally, he averted his eyes.

He could take in his surrounds now, the almost noon sun or the canopies above him. But, he continued to look at ‘nothing’. His mind simply repeated over the event that had just occurred before him and he thought of the best way of how to apologize to Mark or what he should even say should the male come back.

Markus returned, this time with Eva, some sticks and large leaves. The scent was pretty strong, yet familiar. He watched, nodding his head this time as the Afghan Hound warned him. He wouldn’t snap this time, even if it hurt or felt uncomfortable. His eyes briefly turned to Eva, giving her an apologetic look and back.

He gave him two options. To go and get a new bandage at their camp a ways off or to be left here with a splint, his ears flicked. Of course, he didn’t wish to be left alone when he was in such pain. He didn’t want to deal with the worry of paranoia if someone was protecting his back. “I… want to go.”

Markus nodded a bit as Thomas made his decision, as though it were the only reasonable choice he had. Then he bent to the wound, taking the cloth away and setting the newly bloodied thing aside. He took the numbing leaves out of his bag and carefully wrapped them around the leg, forming a kind of protection from infection, and hopefully nebulize the pain. After the leaves had stuck, and seemed to be oozing some kind of clear goo from their rough handling, Markus motioned for Thomas to stretch out his leg so that he could lay the sticks on either side and then wrap the bandage around it, more holding the sticks to the leg and keeping it straightened than anything else. Eva watched the process with shining eyes, and when it was all said and done, she climbed into her father's lap and looked up at him with a bright smile.

Want one too! Eva too! Markus favored her with a small smile, and lifted her with one large hand to set her on his shoulder. You should climb on my back if you can. He said to Thomas, and turned to crouch with his back to the other male, wondering absently if he could make it to the raft.
