there's a rhyme and reason

Tendrils of sand continued to snake eerily across the beach as night descended, but there wasn't the same kind of vigour in the wind that had existed before; the one that had caused a beating of wind and lightning upon the land, once which had made the sea mad with dance. Talitha remained curled up under the shelter of the very same rock she had reached earlier, utterly alone now, with red eyes wide and watchful. Her father always said she had to be careful, because there were those who would try to harm her; but that was entirely beside the point, when she got to thinking about it. She didn't want anything to do with baddies, and the storm was one in itself.

She snorted a little as the sand brushed past her sensitive nose and rested her chin more firmly atop her right paw. It was large and powerful, even though she had begun to sprout like a tree or something long ago. Her brother hadn't begun to grow as quickly as she and, with all the regal grace of a princess, she had begun falling over herself before him as well. Huffing impatiently, the young girl gave up on waiting for the last vestige of the storm to subside.

She wriggled out from under the protective cover of the rooted boulder and ran for it, hoping to get back home before her parents realised she hadn't been there for a while.
