His northern journey had been unsatisfying, to say the least. The cripple now sported new cuts and scrapes, some loosely bandaged by cloth he had found on the way home. As close as he was, he did not wish to yet venture back into the pack territory. The amateur carpenter lifted a free hand to scratch the head of the raccoon clinging to his shoulders. Loviere grimaced with displeasure as the depressing thoughts once again invaded his mind. He had recently begun to realize just how far behind he was in terms of intelligence to others, even some younger than he. It was humiliating to think of what people might think of him when they learned of how slow he truly was.

"Oct, I won't ever know why you stay with me," he mumbled softly, just loud enough so that the coon might hear. The raccoon nudged him in the neck affectionately, nibbling on the new blue scarf that Loviere wore. Loviere could not express words for how grateful he was to have the little companion almost wherever he went. As far as women went, Loviere doubted he would ever find a suitable mate. At the very least he had his little masked brother. The young man continued walking, his crutch thumping along the soft forest earth. The beauty of the Ethereal Eclipse never ceased to astound him. The lush green shade of the trees provided a safe haven for the wanderer. He had yet to find a place inside the territory of the pack that rivaled the forest in terms of beauty in his opinion. But then, there were many places in d'Arte that he had not been.

"Vi, no worries. We're family, we are. We stick together." The little creature spoke quickly, never stumbling over the High Speech. Octavian was better at speaking High Speech than Loviere was at speaking Low. This was a fact that the raccoon prided himself on, but he still he had much to learn.

The wolf's black-splotched tail rose and fell with gratitude to the raccoon's response. At times he felt even the little creature was wiser than most Luperci he had met. Octavian used few words, but those that he did have were often exceedingly heartfelt, Loviere noted with a pang in his chest. He longed for the ability to have those deep feelings that so many others had. Most of the time, the man could only think in simple terms. Black or white, rarely any shades of grey. He understood little else. But as he lacked understanding, he did not lack the longing to understand.

Hope this is okay. ^.^ / +451

It was time to go back north, to the beach they started out on. Dixie had a feeling that they would stay there for a long time, seeing as it reminded both her and Wayne of their home on the Texas coast. Of course it wasn’t as pretty or full of the nature that they were used to, but that small similarity was enough to curb the feeling of longing that grew in their chests after a long while of being away from home. Fern, the large draft mare, had birthed on the beach between the two more southern packs, dropping a large healthy colt that probably weighed half as much as their full grown stud, Duke. Now that she was unburdened with the extra weight of the foal, Fern was being trained to pull the wagon. Dixie was back to riding on Duke like usual and the stallion seemed happy for the change.

Wayne was driving the cart, his saddle and their bags carried in the back as well as about ten pounds of sweet grass, fern leaves and other assorted types of vegetation that they’d seen the horses eating. Dixie wanted to collect a lot of it for their beach trips so the large beasts had something to eat other than the scraggly, dying grass that grew in the sand. Fern had appreciated the treats and the canine’s had been able to help with the birth and clean the colt up quickly afterwards. There had been no fighting or intimidation routines from the big mare, and Dixie knew then that they had a faithful companion. The colt had been named Bark, as in tree bark, but both Dixie and Wayne thought it was a hilarious name since the foal’s first noises had sounded like the barks and yips of a puppy.

They were in a field alongside a forested area, the flat terrain making it easier for Fern to pull the wagon. Dixie, her tiny white body resting on top of Duke and the beautiful leather saddle brought from Texas, was keeping watch as they moved. About thirty miles had already been covered since they had started traveling before the sun rose, and the horses were starting to get a bit tired. Wayne grumbled a few times as Bark trotted and scampered around the wagon and his mother, kicking up his heels and getting in the way. They seriously needed a distraction for the foal because he was beginning to get on their nerves…well Wayne’s at least. Dixie just giggled and wagged her tail, clicking to Duke for them to trot alongside the foal and keep him occupied for the five minutes that his attention span stretched.

Word Count :: n.a So my muse died in the middle of another thread... soyeah. This sucks majorly. Give me a kick tomorrow if you need more to reply off of.

As he drew closer to the edge of the forest, the sound of hoofbeats met his ears. He picked up his pace excitedly, Octavian running ahead. Horses generally meant traders in his experience, and traders always had the best stories to tell, the best information to share. As he walked into the open field at the edge of the treeline, his mouth curled into a sort of half-smile. Three horses, one of whom was clearly newly born. Two Luperci, obviously of a rustic nature. As they approached, he waved his crutch in the air, trying to get their attention.

"I'm thinking they look.... funny," chattered the raccoon as he padded forward, ears perked upward in curiousity. Horses were among the raccoon's most favorite animals. They were great fun - half were so easily spooked that the raccoon could amuse himself, half were fun enough that he might get a little game going on.

Loviere chuckled at the simple speech of the coon. That was something he had always appreciated in Octavian. Both of them were men of simple words. As he walked closer to the oncoming wagon, he found himself wondering what the group might have inside the wagon. "Hey there! Hello!" he called, waving so as to ensure the two that he meant no harm. Octavian loped forward, ringed tail held almost perfectly perpendicular to the ground as he approached the colt. He chattered greetings in low speech and high speech, wondering if the little horse might understand anything he had to say at all.

Your post was fine! Hope she doesn't scare Lovi. Sorry for writing so muuuch . / +683

Wayne saw the stranger before the horses or Dixie did, which was a big surprise. The white girl just guessed that the large beasts were so focused on the colt that they weren’t paying as much attention as normal. The large male driving the wagon growled softly and appeared to start raising his lips in a threatening snarl. Dixie kicked her heels against Duke’s sides and got the horse to pull up alongside the wagon, then reached out and smacked the half Labrador’s head. Would you stop growlin’ at everythin’ that moves! Gracious Wayne, we ain’t been jumped yet, don’t make people want to jump us! The female growled out at him in her soft and normally sweet voice. She was just about tired of his bad attitude when it came to anyone who they didn’t know…which was everyone.

Huffing softly in annoyance, she pulled ahead on Duke and trotted closer to the oncoming male, signaling for Wayne to pull to a stop. She heard the wagon’s wheels slow and then halt, Fern snorting when the colt followed Duke out further. He sure was a cheeky, daring little devil for only a few days old. Dixie was about to great the male wolf when a little fur-ball shot through the grass and startled Duke, causing the stallion to squeal and shy away. Clinging to the reins and his mane, she held on and leaned down to rest against his neck, whispering soft words into his ear. Over the years they had adopted a small system. Dixie couldn’t speak low speech, but she sure as hell could repeat the same comforting words over and over until her horse understood what she was doing and saying. Within moments he was bobbing his head and prancing, growing closer to the stranger and ignoring what he now knew was a silly ‘coon.

Hey there, Mister. She sat up in the saddle and waved back to him, a bit of sadness tinting her green eyes as she watched him try to walk closer while using the cane. He wasn’t a bad looking man; the mottled and oddly colored coat was healthy and good looking, as was his physique and stature. But his leg was so twisted…it looked downright painful and Dixie immediately felt that maternal urge to scoop him up and cuddle him close. Didn’t matter if he was two years her senior, she felt the same way about horses and cows and whatever else might have crossed her path. She was simply a caring and loving creature. Hearing a soft squeal, she looked over to the side and grinned. Bark was hopping around in the grass, rearing up and bucking every now and then, playing with the fluffy raccoon. Cute. Turning back to the male, she got closer and then slid down off of Duke, ignoring Wayne’s warning growl.

Don’t mind him, he’s just a grumpy boy ‘cause he ain’t done nothin’ but drive that wagon for the last few hours. She smiled and waved a dismissive hand back in Wayne’s direction, getting closer still to the darker male until she could reach out and touch him if she wanted. Hun you look positively worn out. Walkin’ with that cane must be hard after a while…why don’t we give you a ride? She was having such a hard time keeping herself from reaching out and pulling him into a hug. He was a lot taller than her, of course, as everyone was, but she would have attempted to carry him if she thought she could. Without waiting for a reply, she turned and motioned to Wayne to bring the wagon closer, smiling sweetly at the stranger. I’m Dixie-May, the grumpy pup is Wayne. My horse here is Duke, the one pullin’ the wagon is Fern and that’s her baby, Bark. She grinned and reached a hand out for him to shake…or whatever. It was something that she’d picked up after reading through a few human books. Whatever he decided to do, she hoped that they’d be able to be friends. Dixie just loved making new friends.

Lovi had never been comfortable riding horses. Perhaps it was because he did not understand the nature of the horse. What drove a creature to allow another being to ride it wherever it pleased? One day he would have Octavian ask. Or try to ask himself, with what little Low Speech he knew. They were definitely beautiful creatures. Strong too. He kept his hand held up to greet the two canines, trying to show he meant them no harm. Like a cripple could take on three horses and two Luperci anyways.

The white lady was short and petite. Her soft tone comforted him slightly. He had been slightly afraid that the group might mean trouble. She seemed pleasant enough - talkative, definitely. He wondered if she would mind his simple speech. Loviere took a quick look at Wayne and the wagon. The look of the hybrid told Loviere to be sure to get on his good side. His soft golden eyes fell down to look at Octavian, who was playfully running circles around the colt. The raccoon sped between the legs of the young horse, ringed tail lashing about to touch the creature.

"Sorry about the raccoon, ma'am. He's just a goof." Loviere dipped his head to acknowledge the woman, eyes shining happily. At her offer, he felt slightly flustered. He knew she meant well, but he never really liked being given the easy road. He could fare just fine on his own, but he had to admit, he was quite tired. He shook her hand gratefully after she introduced herself and then spoke in his own cautious tone. "I'm Loviere. Nice to meet you, Dixie-May. The goofy one there's Octavian. A ride'd be nice, definitely. If you don't mind.

He lifted a hand to wave cautiously at Wayne, keeping his eyes low. He found himself wondering what the group was doing around here and where they were headed, but waited for Dixie to speak again before he asked.

Dixie slid her hand against the man’s and shook it firmly before letting go and dropping her arm back down to her side. She hadn’t missed the little flash of male pride in his eyes when she’d offered him a ride, and knew that he was probably uncomfortable with asking for help. Whenever Wayne got injured or didn’t know how to do something he got so grumpy…more than usual, because he just hated asking for help. The girl just chalked it down to being the typical male attitude towards looking weak and shrugged it off. The fact that Loviere nodded and accepted her invitation to ride said a lot about him and gave him a large piece of respect in her mind.

The girl smiled and shook her head at his words, waving one little hand in the direction of the ‘coon and foal. He’s fine, and the colt needs some attention. A little playmate is good for him right now. Fern snorted as she watched her foal playing with the fluffy looking rat, tossing her head and prancing her huge hooves about in excitement. Bark whickered softly and trotted over to his mother, ducking his head under her belly and latching onto his food supply. Wayne dropped the reins and hopped down from the wagon, plastering on a friendly face to appease Dixie for his earlier behavior. Approaching the two, he nodded to Loviere and gave him a small smile. ”Guess I’ll make some room in the back then, nice ta meet ya.” With another small nod, he turned and went to the back of the wagon, leaning in and shifting items around until there was more than enough room for the male and his pet to ride.

C’mon, Loviere…let’s get you on up, yeah? She grinned and led him around to the back of the wagon as well, leaning against the wood. There were a few skins laid out on the wood to make it more comfortable, almost like a bed. Dixie leaned over and grabbed one of the unused saddle bags, digging in it and pulling out a handful of dried meat. Got some snacks, too, if you’d like a bit to eat.

table by shannon. hurrp. I'm sorry. I'm going to try very hard to get my muse back up for Loviere. I've kinda lost some of it.

The firmness of her handshake made him smile. He had met warm types like her back where his parents lived, the place he had been born. His parents had never quite liked that type of folk, but Loviere loved people who were so peaceable. He watched Octavian follow the little horse, the raccoon now running circles around Fern. Loviere looked at Wayne now, a friendly smile on his lips. The man looked nice enough - perhaps just a bit on the cranky side. "Thank you both very much," he said gently, following Dixie to the wagon. While more cautious creatures might be slightly apprehensive of the idea of getting in a wagon with two complete strangers, Loviere didn't allow any negative possibilities go through his mind.

Loviere whispered in Low Speech and Octavian stopped his playful harrassment of the horses. The plump raccoon jumped up onto the wolf from behind, gripping the long white hairs that fell from his back and mane to pull himself easily around his shoulders. Loviere did not flinch as the creature pulled at his fur. He was quite used to Oct's habit of using him as a jungle gym.

The wolf, now with the raccoon in tow, gently lifted himself up into the wagon, nodding his appreciation at Dixie-May. "This is very kind of you, ma'am. I don't mean to intrude upon you both. If I may ask, where are you headed?" He hoped he did not ask too much. He was simply looking for conversation and he rarely thought twice before he spoke.

sorry for the wait. xD my muse is kinda lagging. / +368

Light green eyes followed the little raccoon as he ran through the grass until Loviere called for him in low speech. Her jaws parted in a smile when the creature came to a halt and turned to look at the male before bounding over and leaping up onto his back. She winced a bit when the ‘coon grabbed his hair and tugged to hold on, but it didn’t seem to bother him at all. Smiling still, Dixie turned and pulled herself up onto Duke’s back, getting comfortable on the saddle. The stud let out a deep sigh and tossed his head as Bark, the colt, nipped his flank. The mare pulling the wagon whickered softly, calling for her baby, and he went to play near her instead. Ok, Wayne…is everythin’ comfortable Loviere? You can move the stuff back there if you want, just don’t toss it out. Her voice was soft and happy, letting her friend know that it was okay to have Fern start moving again.

Loviere was very nice and reminded her of her father kind of, though her Papa was a lot bigger and whiter. They were both kind and looked happy enough, though she was sure that this man harbored some kind of sadness in his heart. His eyes were deep and it was easy to tell that he had the ability to love and care for other, Octavian was clear proof. Dixie shook her head and grinned at the gray man, shrugging her little shoulders. You ain’t askin’ too much, hun. We are headed on towards the beach…there is a big ol’ bay aroun’ here somewhere, and our beach is on the other side. All we know is to stay on the coast and head on up North. She dropped the reins onto Duke’s neck and just let him walk by himself, trusting that he wouldn’t take off or leave the side of the wagon.
