The Final Showdown
#1
Chapel paced restlessly back and forth across the dusty wooden floor of her temporary home. The thought of finally achieving what she had hoped filled her with adrenaline that pumped through her veins with every thump of her heart. She couldn't just sit around here any longer. She had to act. Once the deed was done, Chapel could simply return home with to her brothers, sisters, mother, and father, and tell them of the great news. They would be so proud. The mangy pup she had talked to earlier had told her all she needed to know. All that was left was to just go through with it. It would go without a hitch.

Leaving her room, she galloped down the stairs and out the door of the abode she would never see again. The tall building gradually faded into the distance and slipped from her mind. Before she was simply a coyote. Now she felt like a superhero, saving the world from the cold clutches of evil that grasped it for so long. The female quickly passed the Grimwell Caverns and crossed the River Acheron, waiting to hear some sound that she could identify. Finally, she heard it. The sound of splashing water and high pitched voices greeted her ears. She scratched at the ground in anticipation.

Following the source of the noise, she came to Hade's Beach. Chapel remembered being here not too long ago when her plan was only in infancy. It was that pup that made this happen. That brought her demise over herself. There they were; the pups of Inferni. The next generation. She'd heard rumors that these would be the saviors of the pack, that they would bring it to the next golden age. Chapel would make sure they didn't even have the chance.

(gonna end it here so people can reply xD)

I'm assuming that Chapel is mostly out of sight? Mel hope it's okay that I mentioned Kesho going to Enkiel for pain sometimes... Tongue Also hope it's fine that I didn't really have him confront her yet. I figure I will do that in my next post, unless Tammi wants Hybrid to come in and attack first? :O For now Kesho's just sorta chillin' behind the bushes/trees/whatev.

The old coyote hadn't had much time to bond with Inferni's youth himself, but even he knew their worth. They were born to Inferni, and carried the blood of the coyote and nothing else (or too little for Kesho to care). For this alone, the Causarius knew that they must be protected. Hybrid was teaching them the old ways, and Kesho knew that Talitha and Halo would raise the children with the proper sternness. They would succeed him, and likely half of the clan. They were truly the future; it wasn't often that Inferni's women bore children, and their numbers were always few. But now, they had five young children in their ranks, and one older girl who would soon hold an adult rank.

Kesho had caught their scent on the wind; several of the children gathered in one familiar place. The beach. A favorite haunt of his, he easily followed the invisible path he's traveled so many times before, red eyes staring ahead, his nose low to the ground, stalking their trail. Were they alone? Besides Symera, he knew that the oldest puppies were hardly in their fourth month. If they were his, he would have been nearby. Regrettably, Kesho had never fathered an Inferni-born child himself. You still have time, he thought to himself, though he hardly believed it.

His aging body had started to fail him. In his second fight with Shawchert, his rear flank had been badly torn. The flesh had scarred heavily there, and he walked with a noticeable limp. It did not keep him from getting around, though after a time the muscle would ache from strain. His Optime form only made it worse, so in recent months he had stayed on four legs as often as he could. The greying coyote had paid visit to their jackal healer on occasion, but he hated feeling like he was relying on those medicines.

The salty air tingled his nose, the scent of the sea almost stronger than that of the puppies now. He came to a halt before the trees ended and made way for the wide expanse of rocky beach, crimson eyes peering out between the leaves at the babes playing. With no parent in sight, Kesho became concerned, though did not approach yet. His gaze darted to catch movement, but just as quickly it was hidden again. His old eyes narrowed, suspicious, and large ears darted forward. Ignoring the pain in his leg now, he crouched, now intensely focused on the spot he'd seen shadows move. Who would be creeping around like that? He sniffed, but could not recognize the scent, though it was native. The Causarius may not have been as fast as he was years ago, but he was certain he would be fast enough, should anything threaten the future of his home.

OMG YISSSS. SO EXCITED. CHAPEL IS SO COOOOL. (WC: 337)

Due to his frequent patrolling of Inferni and their borders especially, Hybrid was often very in tune with the coming-and-going of members within his home. Since he passed by the dens fairly often, he would check in on his children when it so pleased him. Today, he had happened by the den where the children lived, along with Valkyrie, but could not find any of them there. He figured they were likely out with Valkyrie learning to hunt. Once they were older, he knew he would begin showing them other things, including fighting and warmanship. Now, he tried to tell them all he could to shape them into his ideal soldiers, so although he did not see them too often, he figured it was certainly often enough.

Hybrid followed the river down to the water's edge, following the scent of a newer Inferni member. Something about that scent was familiar, though, he knew he had never met them. He knew Inferni had welcomed some new members into its ranks, but he had only been watching them in passing as he patrolled, so he hardly knew them at all. Somehow, this member was completely unknown to him save for a slight tingling of recognition. Like the other members, he figured it was someone he'd smelled at some point and forgotten about it.

As he approached the water's edge, he saw a familiar figure standing in the distance. He trotted toward the other, who he quickly recognized to be Kesho -- now in the elder ranks. His scent had significantly changed since their last encounter.

Hybrid's gait was still a little stunted from his foray into AniWayan territory, where he'd wounded his back leg. Still, he tried the best he could to approach comfortably without further injuring himself.

Once he came closer, he barked out: "what're you looking at?" He followed Kesho's gaze and saw a group of puppies -- as well as that unknown coyote -- on the beach. Puzzled, he tilted his head. What was going on?
After coming back to Inferni lands, she had spent most of her time taking care of the results of her trade: two spruce grouse eggs, which she had assumed to be birds of prey rather than birds that were prey. Consequently, she spent most of her time inside the Grimwell Caverns, watching the eggs and occasionally turning them. She only went out to hunt.

On this day, however, she felt a need to do something else. She was starting to get sore from sitting so long. The coywolf traveled out of the caverns, into the almost-blindingly bright sunlight. After spending so much time in the dark, it took a few moments for her eyes to adjust. She blinked, and yawned.

A brown streak spend past her, which she could almost make out as another coyote. Whoever they were, they were intent on getting somewhere quickly. Curiosity overcame Alma, and so too, did the need for company. The trade had put her in a good mood, and she felt brave enough to approach someone new today.

The coywolf took a guess as to where the coyote went, from the direction she had seen her running in - the beach. Alma traveled in that direction, at a languid pace.

By the time she had reached the beach, two others were there before her. A coyote who looked old enough to be an elder, and another coyote she didn't recognize but from his scent had to be of Inferni. Neither of them looked like the brown streak she saw flying past her, and Alma could not see the third coyote from her vantage point.

"A-am I interrupting something?" She had seen and heard the pups, but the thing that sped past her wasn't that small. "Anyone see a brown thing running?"

[ohgawd guys. it's gettin srs]

Chapel creeped along, belly close to the ground. She sensed other forms close nearby, perhaps even watching or hearing of her suspicious activity. By now she was far from caring. The scent of the pups filled her nostrils and her eyes hungrily took in their little forms. "Soon their hearts will be stopped, and they will be forever silent..." the female thought to herself, smiling wickedly. Thoughts raced through her head of being stopped before she was able to reach her goals, and it filled her with even more anger and urgency. There was no stopping here. Her mind told her to wait for a better time, when she was alone with them, but her heart told her to hurry up and get it done. She longed for her real family. Chapel had no place here with the high-up snobs in Inferni, who thought they were so much better than everyone else. Especially those Massacres.

Chapel's nostrils flared violently (lol?) at the thought of the bloodline. They left her family to die and moved without notifying anyone else. Then the snowstorm overcame them and forever they lost their trail. Until now. Now it was time to achieve vengeance and right the wrongs.

Before anyone could stop her, and before even her brain could catch up with her, Chapel pounced on the closest pup and attempted to sink her claws and teeth deep into their flesh.

maybe hybrid can tell alma to go find zeke, before following kesho? :o i hope dis is okay. <3

Kesho's attention did not waver with Hybrid's approach; his focus was forward, intense on the red woman. An ear twitched, though, at the Hydra's words. Frowning, his gaze narrowed, now affording to dark sideways at the younger man. "Not sure," he grunted in a low voice, lowering his body still further, the fur on his neck bristling uncomfortably.

The coyote faltered for a moment at the stranger's voice, and his head turned to look. He didn't recognize this girl, but shook his head in response, not realizing at first that the brown thing was the suspicious coyote on the beach. Kesho's crimson gaze was forward, and he finally saw movement again. His eyes shot open, ears forward on high alert. The rusty figure crept low to the ground with incriminating movements, and the old coyote had barely hesitated to react when she lunged, and he exploded into action.

He wasn't paying attention to the pain in his leg now; his feet pounded at their fastest pace, a snarl tore from his throat as he charged her. How dare that bitch try to shed Infernian blood on their land! His mind was blank of anything but her jaws around that puppy; the child's terrified wails filled his ears as he flung his body towards the woman, yellowed teeth lashing out dangerously, seeking the soft flesh of her throat. He wanted to watch her bleed for what she'd done.

OMG SOOPER SRS. (Also, how does Bobbi's suggestion sound to you, Alma? B) Or Alma could be all "LOL NO", try to help, get hurt, and then call for Zeke/ hobble off? XD Whatever you'd rather broo )

Hybrid was growing more and more concerned with the second. What was going on? It looked like an unknown Inferni coyote was with some of the puppies -- his puppies -- down on the beach. It was definitely neither Talitha nor Valkyrie and Hybrid had not authorized anyone else to look after them. Well, Talitha or Valkyrie might have passed off the children to someone else, but then there would be hell to pay. Hybrid needed these children to grow so that he could make them into the ideal Infernians; his plan would not work if they were dead. As much as he didn't want to admit it, Hybrid wanted some sort of legacy.

It wasn't until another coyote approached and spoke of a 'brown thing running' that Hybrid really began to wonder. This wasn't just some random stranger: there had to be intent here.

Apparently, Kesho noticed it quicker than he could, for in a flash, the older coyote had taken off. Hybrid bounded after the other and then stopped and shot a glance over his shoulder to the other unknown coyote.

"Find Gabre-- I mean -- find Ezekiel! Quick!" He bellowed out the words and picked up the pace again as he shouted the last one. He tried to run through the sand, and luckily, was able to get enough traction to push himself forward. He wasn't as quick as Kesho, so he made a point of pushing himself to get between this mysterious coyote and the children. He still didn't understand what the fuck was going on.
((If I hadn't joined a thread after this one, I would have gotten her injured. Sad It'd be hard to explain her hunting and walking about normally now.))

Alma noted the elder’s bristled fur, and that the two males seemed to be on edge for some reason. She followed the gaze of one of them and saw a third coyote creeping about in the bushes, just before it lunged toward a puppy. Alma stood staring in disbelief while the elderly coyote sprang forward to intercept the attacker.

It took a few moments to register just what was happening, her mind unable to cope with the idea that someone would attack their own clan's puppies. She tried desperately to think of some reasonable explanation for what was happening.

The sound of a puppy's wailing broke her stupor and made her realize that, whatever it was, it was serious and that the reason for it didn't matter at just this moment.

"Find Gabre-- I mean -- find Ezekiel! Quick!"

While Alma had been busy trying to figure out what was happening, the other male was running to place himself in the way of the pups. Shame flooded her upon realizing that she had been inactive while lives were at stake. Now she did not bother to think, and immediately responded to his command by turning and sprinting in the direction of Ezekiel's cave.

She began on two feet, but soon was running on four. Her body was unconsciously changing into Secui form for speed. Her limbs were the first thing to change, causing her to stumble a bit as she ran. "Ezekiel! Eeeezekiel!" The coywolf howled, before picking herself up and continuing onward.

At the hint of teeth at her neck, Chapel twisted around , lashing out at her attacker. Bloodlust filled her very soul, and she cared about nothing else. Not caring if her attack had hit the mark, Chapel turned around and chased again for the puppies, who had long since scattered. Jumping forward to the nearest one, paws scrabbling in the sand, she tried to latch on and break the thing's little neck. The she-wolf didn't bother to look behind herself to see if anyone was following her. There was only one thing that mattered now. Either way, she had gone too far now and couldn't just abandon the mission. That would put all into jeopardy. This was her only chance.

Chapel failed at trying to think rationally of a solution that could bring her success. All doors except the most obvious one seemed to be closed and locked for eternity. The "bridge" was approaching her rapidly and would soon be upon her. The she-wolf would have to decide which path to take.

("bridge" is not a literal bridge. Figurative. Sorry about the fail-post and the long wait =( )

fail post since i wasn't sure what hybrid was doing, and there's not a lot to say derp <3

She was fast, and despite his blind rage Kesho felt teeth scrape across his face. His eyes shut hard for a moment as he recoiled, snarling, giving her just enough time for her to leap forward after the puppies again. In a second he was on her, eyes darting to find Hybrid just as the Hydra flung himself in the fray. The murderer was too busy with her task to fight well, but Kesho knew better than to doubt an opponent. Yellowed teeth lashed out again with confidence; he aimed for her flank with quick, deadly snaps of his jaws, sharp canines aching to rip into the tender flesh there. He would not know defeat before her.
Hybrid put himself in the way right in the nick of time: while Hybrid moved to put himself between the puppies and the traitor, he saw her lash out and then try to redirect her attack to the puppies. As she lunged for the puppies, Hybrid twisted and turned to try and catch her as she flung herself at the youth. She felt him make impact with his body, and in the confusion, he felt pain spread across his head and neck, but couldn't tell if he'd grabbed her well enough to prevent her from getting to the puppies.

His fur bristling and his jaws agape, Hybrid lunged to meet her. He bellowed out a loud snarl, screaming with all the bloodlust and rage he could muster. He fed off these volatile emotions and the thought that she would dare attack Inferni's youth -- his children -- enraged him. He pushed himself with his hing legs and reached out, aiming to take her down by the neck and hold her back and head with his dextrous forepaws.
((Not sure if I should still be posting or not. Ignore if not.))

The sounds of snarling and squealing, frightened puppies faded as she ran, replaced by the sound of her own paw-steps. The landscape blurred around her, turning the mass of rocks in the Grimwell area into an expanse of gray. She relied on memory and instinct to find the Aquilia's home, though slowed when she felt she was near. "Eeee-ze-kiel!" She slid to a stop, nearly running face-first into a rock wall.

She seemed to be in the right place; she recognized the painted skull and the raven perched atop it. "Ezekiel!" She panted, hoping he was here and not somewhere else. "Puppies... are... in danger."

The savage in man is never
quite eradicated

Word Count »

He had been content, doing something or another that required only the mechanical repetition of his hands. Thus, when the cry first came, he almost ignored it. Instead he lowered the project and rose—only to be met with Alma’s face, full of panic. She sputtered out something that made his blood turn hot. Puppies. His sister’s? The others?

A savage snarl rippled across his face. His pupils shrank to pinpoints. “Take me there,” he ordered, grabbing his bow. While in his Optime form, the man was a natural runner; he would keep up.

Had it been any other situation, she would have found the Aquilia's snarling frightening. The adrenaline coursing through her veins seemed to override her fear, or perhaps it was the knowledge that his anger was not directed at her.

Alma saw his bow as the Aquilia picked it up, and briefly regretted that she did not think to bring her own when she went out of her cave that morning. She could not stay to ponder such regrets now, however. "Thisss way..." Making the assumption that he would follow, the coywolf turned her head in the direction of the beach and took off running.
