HIDE YOUR INNOCENCE BEFORE THEY SEE RIGHT THROUGH
All Welcome. wc:411

It was back to work for the Acidic boy, who had had his share of idle down-time over the last few weeks. A bit of wandering here and there, a few (rather futile) attempts at bringing focus to his meditative sessions, and all in all generally doing his best to put off the tasks specific to his rank. The boy who had been eager to grow up and be seen as an adult had been surprisingly quick to shrug off his responsibilities he'd once looked forward to. The last few days had seen a flurry of productive activity from the young man, who seemed to have a renewed interest awaken in him for tending the flames.

Jackson had spent the better part of the afternoon out in Anathema's claimed forests, doing some long-needed searching for suitable firewood. By the time he had collected a suitable amount of sturdy, dry branches to be used as kindling, the skies were beginning to take on a flushed tint to signal the approach of the night. The boy followed the familiar path back to the nearest entrance of the howling caverns. The sun was casting it's orange glow into the gaping entrance to the caverns when he finally arrived. Jackson hurried through the winding pathways down to storage, where he relieved his arms of the load of branches he carried around all day. The branches were added to a pile in one corner of he storage room. Nearby sat a stack of larger blocks of wood, ones that were to be used for larger, longer-lasting fires. He grabbed a couple of these blocks before leaving the room.

When he arrived at the large common room, he found what he had expected to see--the firepit encircling a pile of ash and embers. The hybrid kneeled down beside the circle of stones and set the logs he'd brought up from the storage room down next to him. He pushed aside some of the ashes before grabbing one of the pieces of wood and using it to stir the faintly glowing embers that remained. He placed the wood amongst the embers then leaned forward to gently blow on the embers. Their red hue flashed to a brighter yellow from the airflow, and after a few moments a trail of smoke trickled upward to signal that the log was beginning to catch. The dual-hued boy sat back with a smile, cerulean eyes watching as the flames slowly engulfed the wood.

Caprica had started the day on a brilliant note: a brace of birds had stumbled into one of her carefully constructed snares; pheasants no less. Delightedly the young connoisseur had retrieved, plucked and cleaned them all in a morning's work, before returning to her daily grind of amusing herself in as various a variety of ways as she could devise - especially enjoying playing with and crafting toys for the new puppies. When some sixth sense told her the sun was retreating, although she had seen little of it, she headed for the kitchen, humming melodically. On her way she smelled smoke - the fire in the commons must have been stoked, just in time for her to roast the birds. Ideal. She detoured to see how large the flames were - it might have been worth lighting the kitchen one after all - and grinned, seeing the well-prepared young man and the hearty blaze already growing. "What's up, bro?" she said by way of greeting - she recognised him as one of Ravesque's, but she hadn't had the good luck to speak to him before. "That's a nice looking fire - you mind if I borrow a little heat to roast some dinner?"

It didn’t take too long for the revived fire to stir back to its former glory. After a few moments the initial block of wood was surrounded by the lively orange light. One by one Jackson fed the remaining logs into the pit and watched as the fire grew in intensity. A pleasant warmth radiated from the fire pit, causing a smile to spread to the boy’s lips. He sat back, cerulean gaze watching the pleasant flicker shapes before him for a few silent moments.

The relative quiet of the empty commons room came to an end a few minutes later. One of his unknown packmates soon joined him, tossing him a casual greeting as she came in. The Acidic sat up, gaze turning to examine the curvy woman. “Hey there,” he greeted in return. The dark-furred wolf was vaguely familiar, though Jackson knew they’d never been introduced. He’d probably passed her by before, but he couldn’t recall any specific instances. No big deal, really. She asked him if she could borrow the fire for a little cooking. Jackson nodded, eyeing the birds she carried with her. “Yeah, man, go for it. That’s what it’s there for.” Jackson waved idly toward the flames. It wouldn’t be doing much good just sitting there. It was nice to know that some of his work was good for some use.

The tall girl smiled to hear his generous reply, tossing him a "Cool. Be right back," as she was already exiting the room In the kitchen she expertly spitted the pheasants, and returned in a matter of seconds to prop them over the flames, before standing back and dusting off her paws. "Awesome, you've done all the hard work... Now there's nothin' left to do but sit back and wait." Making good on her words, she knelt facing the flickering blaze, hands in the crook of her knees, only just within reaching distance of the turnspit. Leaf-green eyes shot him another quick glance from below her fringe, but still couldn't put a name to the face. "I'm Caprica, by the way," she added, and wanted to say something like 'you don't look much like your daddy, do ya?' but didn't want to put her foot in it - the boy could be adopted, for all she knew, although she was certain she could see a little Ravesque in his face somehow. She racked her brains for all she knew about this little family, but all she could remember was that they'd come here to follow her mother Naniko, after whatever it was that had happened to their mother. She got the impression they hadn't all arrived at once, but it had been while she was absent; she simply didn't know all the details. She wasn't nosy, either. He seemed like a nice boy but she wasn't going to start prying for information about the past. For Caprica, the past was best left where it was.

The girl seemed pleased to be able to make use of the fire, darting out of the room into the direction of the kitchen. Jackson nodded as she left, cerulean gaze watching as she retreated. He wondered what she could be doing, but she was quick to return and show off her handiwork. He watched in silence as she set up the birds for cooking. And then, as she said, it was time to sit back and wait. “My favorite part,” he said with a grin. Ah, there was that good old lazy boy Jackson had developed into in recent weeks. Can’t keep that part of him locked away for long, no sir.

He watched the birds hang there over the blaze for a moment, one hand idly tapping a nonsense beat on his knee. The girl spoke up again to introduce herself, prompting Jackson to return his gaze to the dark-furred girl. She said her name was Caprica, but the name didn’t ring any bells. Caprica, Caprica, Caprica. Where had he seen her? With Naniko, maybe? That would make sense. The young man still did his best to childishly avoid the woman whenever he could, so if this girl spent time with her it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Jackson didn’t know her. “Jackson. Good to meet ya.” Cerulean eyes studied her features for a moment, settling on her own leafy gaze. “Guess you had some luck hunting today, huh?” he said, motioning toward the slowly roasting birds.

Considering Caprica's adoration of her new little brothers, it was true enough she had been spending a large portion of her time in her mother's quarters, where given his aversion it was unsurprising they had not run into one another. She shrugged modestly at his comment about the prey, saying 'Definitely lucky! I didn't really catch them. I laid the traps and they caught themselves.' Like Jackson Caprica was all in favour of spending the least amount of effort necessary, and proud of the time and energy her contraptions saved her, leaving more free to put to other uses. He told her his name, which didn't tell her much, but every moment she thought she could see the resemblance more and more. 'So its good to meet you, seeing as we're kinda family.' She let this hang for a mischievious moment then clarified 'Seeing as how your dad and my mom...' How best to put the intangible link where Ravesque was helping to raise her half-brothers? '...Have a thing,' she finished eventually, amusement in her tone- a little awkward, this, and it could get more so if she was wrong about Jackson's parentage. Boy would she have egg on her face, but she was confident enough. She poked a pheasant to turn it a little bit away from a rogue flame that threatened to char the flesh, musing how odd it was that the dark wolf who had welcomed her here and loitered in the back of her mind ever since had turned out to be linked to so many she'd met or already knew here, including the ones close to herself.

Caprica seemed to agree that she had been lucky, explaining that her traps had done most of the work. His eyes widened a bit, impressed by the luck of the situation. “Dang, ain’t that something. I might have to have ya show me how to work those traps sometime,” he said, the beginnings of a grin slipping to his maw. Jackson didn’t really know anything regarding the use of traps for hunting. The boy was used to doing things the old fashion way, experiencing the thrill of chasing prey through the forests on four legs. If setting up traps was this helpful, he would certainly be glad to learn it.

The woman mentioned that they were family, in some kind of way. The comment received a raised brow in response. Yet before Jackson could form a question of his own, she went on to elaborate what she’d meant. His dad and her mom…. So she did belong to the snowy Angela. Describing what their parents had as a ‘thing’ felt rather fitting to the boy. As far as he knew they weren’t necessarily mates, but they did spend an awful lot of time together, much to Jackson’s dismay. The Acidic male didn’t run into his father as much as he used to after his coming-of-age ceremony, but since the birth of Naniko’s newest litter, he was seeing him less and less. He felt like a selfish little boy to admit it, but he wished that the Acidic patriarch would spend more time with his own children. Jackson shook his head, an awkward laugh finding its way from his throat. “Yeah, I guess that’s true. So, you’re Naniko’s daughter, then?” he asked, seeking clarification to make sure he had everything straight. Man, that woman sure seemed to have a lot of kids.

His easy enthusiasm was appealing, and infectious. 'Sure, anytime!' she offered magnanimously when he suggested the sharing of her trap crafting knowledge. Surreptitiously she eyed him once more, fascinated by the ways he differed from his father as well as the similarities, wondering about the missing link that she would never set eyes on. Her own mother was named, queried, and she nodded, causing hair to fall into her eyes. She swished it back in a prove swing, jawline lifting. 'Boy you'd better watch out - you're in the presence of a D'Angelo!' A small noise of merriment chased these words, as if mocking her own pomposity and she nudged a bird further along its spit, blissfully unaware of his feelings towards Naniko, and his father's new occupation as surrogate parent. She was steadfastly not considering the subject too deeply herself. Changing tack felt like a good idea. 'How's life been treating you then, in these caves of ours? Quite a concept, huh!'

The woman seemed to be willing to teach Jackson a thing or two about her traps, much to his delight. A pleased grin spread to his features. “Sweet,” he said, giving a single nod of excitement. That would definitely be something to look forward to. Caprica went on answer his question in the affirmative with a giggling comment of her status as a D’Angelo. He feigned a look of surprise. “Yeah, gotta watch myself around you guys, huh?” he joked, sticking his out his tongue in a playful gesture. It was good to see that she had a sense of humor, unlike her mother.

Their conversation took another turn rather effortlessly. He glanced around at the cave they currently sat in for a brief moment before focusing once more on the dark-furred woman. “Yeah, it’s cool, I guess. I pretty much grew up here, so it’s kinda lost its charm.” The boy smirked and gave a lazy shrug of his shoulders. He fiddled idly with the carved bone charm hanging about his neck. “How ‘bout you, man? Fond of this crazy maze we call home?”

He had the initiative to play along with her messing around and she highly approved. The kid was good company and a welcome diversion, definitely one of the better results of the lottery that was socialisation in the Anatheman catacombs. But it seemed these tunnels were wearing on him a little - maybe it was simply a mild youthful discontent, but she wondered if there was more behind his failure to be charmed by their homeland. Perhaps he was lonesome. 'You got any brothers and sisters here, Jackson?' As for herself, 'So far? I adore this place. Its got soul, y'know? Its got secrets.' It wasn't perfect... there was the sunlessness, the strange encounters in the dark, the occasionally stifling silence... you couldn't exactly call Anathema 'charming', true. But it was as resilient and powerful, to her mind, as the mountain that contained it. 'Beats lonering in the woods anyhow, I can tell ya,' she finished, turning the spit absent-mindedly. The meat was beginning to smell stronger as it cooked. She did like to eat old school style too, fresh flesh and all, but the variety you could achieve with the application of heat was too good to ignore.

The woman offered him another question, inquiring if he had any siblings. The boy nodded an affirmative. “Yeah, got two sisters. Agony and Esmeralda. Agony can be kind of a pain sometimes, but I haven’t seen much of her lately, to be honest. Esme’s pretty sweet, I guess.” Perhaps Jackson was just oblivious to the self-important attitude of his lilac sister. Esme was just Esme, and she had always seemed sweet enough to him. “Oh, and there’s my brother Scorpius too,” he added, remembering his coal-furred D’Angelo half-brother. Wait, D’Angelo. “Well, I guess he’s a brother to both of us, huh?” Yet another common bond the two of them shared.

She seemed to be enjoying her time here, claiming the reason to be its soul and secrets. Jackson supposed he could understand that. “I hear ya about those secrets. Always seem to be finding something new around here,” he admitted. Part of the reason Jackson had been so enamored with these catacombs as a pup had been the seemingly endless surprises to be discovered within. He’d been spending less and less time venturing out to parts of the caverns he was unfamiliar with as he’d grown; perhaps some of that mindless exploration was in order for him to start feeling that enthusiasm again. He watched her turn the roasting birds for a moment, mentally taking a few notes. Jackson had never cooked his meat before, but it seemed like an easy enough process. “So, didja spend a lot of time bumming around as a loner before coming here?” he asked, curiosity evident in his tone. He didn’t know how long Caprica had been in residence here, but it had not been quite as long as Jackson. He wondered what it must have been like to have spent time living on her own, as the boy had never known anything outside of pack life.

The litany of siblings seemed lengthy enough to warrant protection from isolation. Caprica murmured a few encouraging 'Mmm' noises as she listened but made no meaningful comment, until the name of Scorpius surprised her into saying without thinking "Scorpius? He's your brother too?" The next instant she regretted the words for how moronic they sounded, but she had meant every one truly, having no idea how the two were related. Perhaps, she thought longingly, one day someone intelligent would be able to tell her the reason for the gaps in her memory. Until then she would just have to live with the unexplained blanks that usurped things she shoudl definitely know and remember - faces, places, especially from her childhood and more besides... It seemed to be wearing away lately though, the hazy effect, as all her days in Anathema were relatively crystal clear and she could picture each of her tiny brothers as easy as say their names. Meanwhile, the name of Scorpius - there was no picture there.

The next question brought her further into the past and she narrowed her eyes at the fire as she forced her mind back, as awkward and heavy as a rusty machine. "Yeah, I was lookin' for mom, kinda, and I think I was just meant to be in the forest for a while or something... it got real lonely but I learned a lot out there, doing my own thing, just me and my shadow." That said, now and then snatches of conversation in voices she couldn't place would come into her head, and she knew for a fact she had not gone utterly without company - she just couldn't recall anyone else in detail. This was so troubling she did what she always did and turned back to the present, brushing away difficulty with a teasing "Smells good, doesn't it!" noticing Jackson's appraisal of the birds. She was happy to share one with him anyway, if he was willing - the larder was well stocked just now, at least partly due to her exhaustive trapping. The other bird was to be an offer for the Angela and her young; at least that was Caprica's original intention, although Naniko would certainly never go without, she liked to share all her tastier meals with the leader and mother she idolised.

The woman seemed surprised to hear that Scorpius was related to them both. The boy nodded, shifting where he sat slightly. “Yeah, man. Your mom and my dad…” He stopped that thought right there. “Uh. They had a thing. Back in New Brunswick, before I was born.” Probably why they were so damn fond of each other now. “Think your ma brought him over here with her when she left.” Their half-brother was a D’Angelo in name, but he sure as hell looked a lot like Ravesque. At least, before he went and got his face all scarred up. Jackson still wasn’t sure what that was all about, but he supposed it was a question for another day.

Jackson listened with interest as she gave a brief description of her time before arriving in Anathema. Life was one big adventure to the boy, and it seemed like Caprica had had a fair share of her own adventures over time. “Must’ve been real nice,” he commented, “aside from the loneliness.” As much as the boy seemed to enjoy gallivanting off on his own, he always wound up back in the caves in search of his family. He liked to think he didn’t always need the company, but the way his face lit up when he ran into family around the caves after adventuring on his own for a while spoke for itself.

Her teasing brought a grin to his features, along with a light-hearted laugh. “Yeah, man, it sure does. I never had it cooked before,” he admitted with a sheepish shrug. “If it tastes as good as it smells, it’s gotta be awesome.” It seemed like the boy would have to seriously reconsider his policy of sticking to raw foods. This here looked too good to pass up, that was for sure.

So, it was an even thingier thing than Caprica had realised. Her heart was sinking more and more; soon it would be in her stomach. Enough already, she thought, with the dredging up of all the family past. She supposed it was good for her, in the long run, to have a clue what the hell was going on around her, but it was so much easier to live in sweet oblivion. It was lucky such a state of mind came naturally to her without need for any kind of foreign substance abuse. Or was it? She still didn't know the reason - and she didn't want to. She wanted to show her gratitude to Jackson for filling her in in such a thorough manner, but she couldn't meet his eyes at that moment; she thought he must have seen her weakness, and feared that she came over as peculiar at the least. Not that she worried he would get at her for it, for she already trusted the easy-going youngster, but she would rather nobody caught on at all. She would have been relieved to know that he hadn't given it a moment's thought, but if she had thought harder herself, would have realised it would have taken a jump of conclusion to realise her amnesiac tendencies - that or mind-reading.

If her heart was in her stomach, it suddenly didn't seem like such a bad place to be. The pheasants must almost be roasted through by now. He had mentioned the loneliness again, and she smiled to think all that was over and done. Now, there were people to talk to, people to share things with. Yes, the meat did smell good - and he'd never tried it like this? "Never?! Well now, you are in for a treat!" she declared, carving out a piece and handing it towards him. "Just test this for me and see if its done good enough?" the girl requested, eyes dancing with anticipation.

This post feels funky for some reason, sorry. :x

The woman was silent after he explained the situation about their half-brother, averting her gaze. The boy didn’t really mind it, assuming the silence to be a by-product of her contemplating the facts. He sat back and stretched his arms over his head for a brief moment with a relaxed sigh. She seemed surprised that he’d never tried to cook his meat before. He supposed it was kind of odd that he’d never bothered with it before. The Acidic boy spent a lot of his time building up fires for the pack, and from the looks of it, that seemed like the hardest part of cooking. He didn’t have much of an excuse there. Well, it would be an easy enough thing to change, right? Especially since Caprica seemed willing to share, asking him to test it out for her. He graciously accepted the piece she offered to him, a grateful smile lighting up his face. “Hey, sure. Thanks, man.” The meat was warm and tender, and juicy enough to make it really stand out from how he usually ate it. “Ah, dang, this is good stuff,” he said, nodding in approval. “Guess I’ve been missing out all this time, huh?” He laughed.

Its fine! I have such a soft spot for Jackson already.

She smiled proudly, although admittedly, she hadn't done much to the birds. It didn't take much to turn a simple catch into a feast. Before she knew it, she'd finished off a whole half of one of them, proffering the remainder towards the blue-eyed boy. She chomped in silence for a moment, but the cave seemed all too quiet with just the odd crackle from the hearty fire. That was one thing about being down in the caverns - the silence. Caprica was learning to like it, but at first she'd always been singing to herself or tapping away the time. With someone else present to answer, it was even better - the sound of her own voice would drive her crazy otherwise. She had a rather deep, powerful voice which she sometimes wished she could moderate more easily. At least she could sing well - or at least, loudly - especially loving to do so in the Italian she'd learnt while young. For now though it was enough to merely continue the conversation. "So, firestarter, have you got any wild plans for the future, or are you just takin' it as it comes?"

The two of them ate in companionable silence, enjoying the simple meal before them. Jackson offered the woman another grin in thanks as she offered him some more of the bird, which he gladly accepted. Yeah, he was definitely becoming a fan of cooked meat. Maybe it was just having something different for a change that made it taste so good to the boy. Whatever it was, Jackson enjoyed it greatly. He was certainly glad that Caprica had sauntered on by with her catch when she did. Maybe he’d get the chance to cook for her one day, repay the favor.

The boy considered her question for a moment as he chewed. It had never really occurred to him before, but he really didn’t have much of a plan for himself. “Nah man, just kinda goin’ with the flow. I mean, yeah, I got pack duties to keep in mind. Fires won’t tend themselves. But besides that, I take what the world wants to give me.” He nodded as if he was particularly fond of that answer. For a boy who had been so looking forward to hitting adulthood, he sure hadn’t been doing a whole lot with the little taste of it he’d had so far. And really, Jackson was definitely okay with that.

End soon? Then Ehno? 8D

A boy who could be responsible, at the same time as taking his chances with the random flow of life. He deserved a good ride. "I hope life gives you plenty of treats, then. I'm sure some of what's coming you won't expect - guess that's the fun part." She didn't want to look at the thing through rose-tinted eyes - her earthen jade was far more pragmatic - but it didn't hurt to frame everything as well as possible, for sheer sanity of mind. Let the dark stuff take over your thoughts, and you were doomed. It had been a difficult line to walk, her whole life. "For now I'll give ya something, never mind life. Split this chicken with me, then that gives us a kick to go on this trapping expedition to replace 'em!" she joked, slicing the pheasant in half and starting on hers with gusto. Another thought occurred, spoken almost immediately as was her way. "And then you can help me set a fire in my room. Gonna be cosy this winter! Just so long as I don't suffocate myself..." She had only experience with outside fires - would she need a chimney or some kind of draft, she wondered, to keep the air moving. Jackson would hopefully know, or know who to ask. "Sound like a deal?" She grinned at him, unaware of a shard of bone stuck to one of her canines; terribly undignified, but there was an unstudied flair to everything the gangling girl did, and she would not have cared if she'd known anyway.

Yes, yes, yes! We can end here, or with one more post from you. Whatever you'd like~ Big Grin

She spoke of the unexpectedness of life, and the boy considered that for a moment. Yeah, that seemed like it made sense. Life definitely had its share of the good and the bad. He’d had a taste of the bad when he was barely old enough to see, but things had been pretty sweet for him since then. Hell, whatever life wanted to give him, he’d be eager to find out. Her joke brought forth a laugh from the boy, and he nodded eagerly. “Ah, yeah, I definitely like the sound of that.” A trapping expedition—that definitely sounded like a fun time.

And then the coal-furred woman suggested that he could help her out with setting up a nice fire in her den. “Hell yeah, man. You just say the word and I’ll get my firestartin’ on for ya. Check out the ventilation and get those cozy flames built right up.” The boy grinned back eagerly at the thought. Yeah, he’d have all kinds of fun with that. The budding firebug certainly had a fondness for his duties, and if he would be able to help out Caprica at the same time, all the better!
