[M] No Bones About It

Joining with Helotes. Its evening on Oct 13, in Devils Demesne / +333

He was thirsty, panting, and the damn sea with its watery expanse had mocked him earlier. He spat slime onto the ground in protest, and though his mind and stomach grumbled, he was so close now to his goal that he no longer minded these things. The scents were becoming more and more coyote, and he was getting more and more excited. Finally, Inferni, the place where his grandmother supposedly still lived. As he neared, skulls started to appear; hanging from trees, on falling over fence posts and this delighted him. What a way to scare off any pests that may come sniffing around in something that was none of their business.

He paused now, shifted his worn pack on his shoulder. His paws ached, having been traveling for several days, but it was no matter. He flicked his torn ear, ridding himself of some biting insect, and gave a loud and to the point howl and yip, alerting anyone in the area of his presence and requesting them to come to him. This his mother had made quite clear to him to do when he arrived, and though his nature would have him just stroll in like he owned the place, he always heeded his mother’s words.

With a semi annoyed grunt, the dark colored coyote male sat upon a nearby log, twisted from the beating of the wind, and waited. His eyes scanned the immense openness of the land he was now in, he would have no problem spotting someone from far away. To his back, the mountains stabbed at the sky with their steely peaks, and to his front, rolling hills and the howling of the wind. Something at his feet caught his eye, something that nearly glowed in the slowly setting sun. He reached an ebon fist down to clench it, revealed the jaw bone of some hapless canine that had come before him. He could help but smirk, and immediately stuck it into his maw to chew on.

The weather was changing drastically. Ezekiel woke each morning to fog and a cold, bitter wind coming from the north. His pelt had already begun filling with the wolf-plush that came from his father’s bloodline. Gabriel’s absence was becoming less and less notable; Ezekiel had noticed his sister’s disappearance far more recently. Either she had taken up hiding somewhere in the emptiness of the Bay, or as he feared, she had gone after their father. This option settled in his gut sourly, and filled his mouth with bile.

Amber eyes scanned the horizon hawkishly, his weight cocked to one side. Above him the sky rolled a dull, listless bruise-colored purple-gray. The sunset, sinking into the ocean, turned the underside of the clouds pinkish orange. Had he any appreciation for beauty he might have admired such a view. Yet the Aquila’s focus was elsewhere, brooding on his sister and the preparations for winter he had yet to complete.

A yapping call drew his attention and with a frown, Ezekiel began heading in the direction of the call. He had been traveling more and more on his own two legs in order to allow Viggo to rest, though he had used the stolen horses for longer patrols. Red hands shifted the bowstring across his chest as he walked, moving swiftly towards the source of the call. To his surprise, a dark coyote with the familiar splash of red across his face met him. The scarred hybrid halted, amber eyes eyeballing the stranger coldly. “Yeah?”

Everyone is Helotes' cousin. / +243

As he sucked on the jaw bone his bronze eyes were drawn up to the darkening sky; the clouds were pregnant and on the verge of labor, even the color was that of flesh and birth blood. He sighed, he did not want to caught out in the rain again. But luckily, in the distance, movement caught his eye. There was a male luperci heading his way and Helotes stood; this must be the answer to his call.

He spat the bone from his mouth as the coyote man approached, Helotes eyes noted the bow attached to man’s chest and he heeded this; he was in no position to fight against someone armed. When the golden male was before him the two of them stared at each other for a moment, before the man spoke, with a simple “Yeah?”. Helotes liked the guy already.

"Hey. I’m Helotes Lykoi. If I didn’t fuck up my route I’m guessing this is Inferni? My grandma used to live here I guess, and I was hoping to join too." How awkward this was for him, seeing as it was a new experience to ask permission to enter a territory, but he didn’t let it show. Instead, he just stood there coolly, not threatening the male in front of him, not submitting either, just standing there. It was strange, but somehow this guy seemed kind of familiar to him, though he knew he had never met the man.

His suspicions were confirmed within the second breath from the stranger’s mouth. Cousin, now, he supposed. Ezekiel flicked one ear lazily, listening to the wind. The storm was nearing, but had yet to cross the bay. It had been raining more and more these days in preparation for winter. Most of the leaves had turned to the burnt hues that sang of autumn, despite October only being halfway through. November would come and wash away the color that remained, however, and turn them the washed out no-color brown of rain.

He smiled a plastic thing and ran his tongue along the backside of his teeth. “Yeah, this is Inferni. I’m Ezekiel…probably one of your cousins, given the name. Who is your grandmother?” There were few Lykoi women old enough to be this guy’s grandmother. Ezekiel had a fair guess who he was speaking about.

The look on the man’s face seemed indicate that his appearance was of no surprise. He stated his name, Ezekiel, and also that they were most likely cousins. Helotes smirked and crossed his arms "Wouldn’t surprise me, my dad said I’d probably run into a bunch of cousins down here. My grandma’s name is Kaena. I’ve never met the woman but I’ve heard she was quite the lady." So many double meanings in that sentence. From what his father had told him, Kaena was quite a lady of the night, humping pretty much anything that moved. Helotes inwardly scoffed, not that his father had turned out much differently.

Off in the distance, over the mountains, thunder rumbled and he glanced over just in time to see a golden flash of lightning near the peaks. It was going to be one hell of a storm, the winds were picking up too, now gales instead of gusts. He looked back at Ezekiel, hoping that they could hurry this up; Helotes was sure he didn’t want to be in the rain either.

His father had never painted any image of the grandmother who had served as a leader when he had returned. Gabriel was cautious about these things; Ezekiel did not blame him. A mother like Kaena had given rise to hordes of children and far more from those. The spark of lightning did not go unnoticed by the de le Poer, who frowned at it. Dark clouds rolled over the mountain, a raw and terrible purple-black.

“Well, she’s still here. C’mon,” he gestured, and turned eastward. “You wanted to stay, right? What can you do?” Though even now, Ezekiel knew he would not turn him away. He needed more men to fight for him, and he needed men who would be loyal. Halo was not. Kesho was gone. Hybrid was mad. A Lykoi who could claim blood and who was not yet corrupted by the others was something he desired to keep.

The horrendous nature of the clouds above them was awe inspiring. If Helotes wouldn’t have known better, he would have guessed that the sky would burst forth a tornado upon the two of them. But such a thing wouldn’t happen in this terrain and so near the ocean. He looked back at Ezekiel as he confirmed that Kaena was still amongst the living. Helotes gave a small chuckled at that, the old wind bag must be ancient by now, but he supposed he should pay some respects to her, she was his blood after all.

Grabbing his pack and slinging it over his shoulder again, just as another growl of thunder threatened, Ezekiel asked what Helotes could do. For a moment he had no idea what the guy was asking, but then he figured it out. A small smirk came to his lips again, "I can fight." was all he said.

It was true, growing up in a litter containing four males taught him to be tough physically, and then having to face off against his abusive father instilled adeptness in violence in him. Helotes could fight with the best of them, more often than not besting his opponents. He had maimed, crippled, even killed, and it didn’t phase him in the least.

Though they traveled in tandem, Ezekiel made sure to keep his own pace slightly faster than that of the newcomer. His leadership demanded such a thing; he was subtle in his ways as the wild things were. If he demanded respect, it would never come. Sirius would have understood—he recognized that the similarities within them would have driven them to war had they lived together. It was best he had not returned to Inferni after all.

The response was simple and one he was pleased by. Ezekiel grinned savagely. “Good,” he replied. Turning to follow a well-worn trail, the Aquila glanced back to the burnt-eyed coyote. “You’ll have lots of opportunity to do so here. All I ask is loyalty,” he added, teeth gleaming in the stormy evening. “Think you can handle that, Tirones?” A title, not a name; hierarchy within its subtle ways as he was learning was best.

His short response seemed to please Ezekiel and he knew he was in. They turned down a path, and were now beyond the borders, into Inferni territory. Helotes grinned, he didn’t realize it would be this simple, but was glad it was. A few large drops of rain hit the dusty ground around their feet and he was even more glad.

When Ezekiel turned to him, and called him a name he didn’t recognize, and demanded his loyalty, for a split second a chill came to Helotes’ stomach and he was reminded of his father initiating new members into the group. Instinctively his ears flattened submissively, but his facial expression didn’t change as he looked at the golden man.

"I can handle whatever you throw at me boss." A twinkle in his eye showed as he said this. A whole new world was being opened up to him; distant family, a new territory, fights, women. Oh the women! He couldn’t wait to meet those coygals. He smirked again, "I am at your beck an call." He bowed his head slightly as he said this, the smile never leaving his maw.
