circle comes round

It had been a long time coming and going but somehow the pygmy had found herself along the edge of lands she herself had once known so well. The highstrung black stallion snorted, stamping a hoove into the sandy ground as he watched his tiny canine companion brushing her fingers along the skull that marked the border of the clans lands. It had been a long time indeed but she wasn't certain of where she stood anymore.

Zana stood on her hindlegs, her forearms barely able to reach the skull posted high above on the spike. To any other the height would have been nothing, but the smallest of the Lykoi had been born with a terrible gift, or a curse, she still wasn't certain which. Her height was that of a youth barely out of puphood, her weight almost nothing no matter what form she took, and though for the most part she looked like a coyote in appearances, scarred and battered from her strange past. She was no child, often enough the mistake was made though.

At first glance she appeared to be a greyish hue, but that was just another strange falsehood. The small framed luperci pushed the wolfskin cloak off her brow, letting it settle onto her shooulders, reddish gold curls framing her small muzzle as she lifted her nose to the air to test the scents that lingered. Some she could recall, others she didn't know, and like too often some were missing. Her mind whispered, reminding her that til now hers too had been missing for far too long. She shook her head and sighed as the stallion let out a snort, reminding her of where she was.

Turning greyed lilac eyes back to the beast she called softly, "Aye, not much longer.." She hoped this was true, standing on the border reminded her bitterly of her size compared to the others of the clans and packs in the area. True, she had her ways to compensate for her lack of height and weight but first impressions always left her viewed as worthless, a runt among runts, though the truth was far from that though she let them believe what they wanted. She just hoped her own blood would turn a blind eye to what the world always saw on first glance.

It had only been a night since he had left the horses with Salsola, and while Ezekiel was patient, he was nervous. Sirius was crafty, but he hoped their mutual respect for each other might ensure a stock appropriate. He had taken the long route home, stopping to hunt outside of Inferni’s borders. Bucks with sharpening antlers had been nervously watching his travels and avoided the red-marked hunter. All he had felled was a grouse, startled by his wolfish feet as he had traveled.

So while filled, he had not brought anything back. Of course, things had a habit of finding him. The Aquila straightened his posture as he spotted a child with a horse and a cloak—made from a wolf. Curious, he approached boldly. As he neared, the truth of the matter was apparent; there were enough signs to show this was no child; her eyes looked too old, as did the shape of a her face. It was as if someone had taken a coyote and smashed them into the size of a child. Even Enkiel was larger than her.

A sharp yip announced his presence, but the coyote did not introduce himself further.

As it turned out she didn't have long to wait, but in a sense she had spent her whole life waiting so patience had finally grounded the woman. The stallion was another matter. She had been upwind so she hadn't caught the scent of the clan leader, if he hadn't called out a yip to announce himself it would have taken her a few moments more to catch his movement along the lands. The stallion in turn began to fidget and snort, stamping a hoof at the new beast coming towards them, his dislike of the predator's presence more than apparent.

Zana sighed as she tried to calm the larger beast. Murmuring soft words in a foreign language as she stroked his foreleg soothingly. She could feel his muscles twitch and ripple under her paw as she glanced towards the newcomer. She wasn't certain, the distance making her unsure but she thought she recognized the male, though he hadn't been so..large the last time she'd seen him.

She gave her own yip in greeting to let him know she had heard his announced presence and now as he drew into the area she raised her downcast eyes to gaze upon the male. She wasn't for certain, it had been a long time, her words were hesitant as she finally asked. "Zeke?.." she cringed at her accent and then realized how informal her single word had been as she glanced down again. "Ezeikel?" Too late she thought, though she corrected herself still.

He had forgotten much, in his years. Living in solitude had turned his mind onto itself; he retreated and fell back to the old ways of things. Ezekiel was feral; he was the type of man who would have thrived without the aid of hands or the intelligence gifted by their disease. So it did not surprise him to have forgotten the girl at first glance; many faces had come and gone.

Yet she recalled his name, and in doing so, he remembered the child he had found on the shores so long ago. Hardly anything had changed. It was a jarring realization. “Zana?” He started, amber eyes widening. She had been small before, but it had been years! She was smaller than Symera, even. Scarred face turned up towards the horse, whose nervousness the hunter could smell. He made a low, imitation whinny in greeting (for low-speech, while capable, sounded peculiar from canines) and gestured in the same way. “A bit big for you, isn’t he?” A half-joke. His own stallion would likely raise hell with yet another male coming into the herd.

She stood quietly, gazing at the ground, unsure if he would even remember her. It had been a long while and she had rarely seen him about in the time she had been a wild young thing roaming the lands of Inferni. She had left later, on an adventure of sorts with her kin, though she was loyal to the clan she had divided loyalties of blood as well. She would have never spoke them aloud to Gabriel, but in the time DaVinci and Ryan had found peace together away from their duties to the pack and clan she had come to realize that she didn't understand at all why the two lovers relationship had been such a problem. She didn't understand why she had been allowed into the clan where her own brother had not, but it was not her choice and even now when she returned to the lands she didn't expect much to have changed there. Now she just knew her roaming adventures had ended and they had brought her back to the family she had left in these lands.

His voice dropped upon her oversized ears as she flicked them back slightly before her gaze turned upward to the older kin. She tried to give a halfhearted smile but she could see the reaction on his face clear. It was always the same, it hardly ever changed when others met her and realized. Maybe it was more so when they had known her as a youth and the circle was coming round again. She didn't know, all she knew what what she saw in each and every face that realized what she was, and even more what she was not.

She tried to chuckle as she asked, "Not much to look at, aye?" before her attention was thrown back to the beast. She scolded him in Gaelic, before rubbing the nose that came down and nudged her forward. If she hadn't had a paw behind his jaw he probably would have thrown her off balance. He quieted a little as Ezekiel spoke, the low speech soft in his throat, though the stallion still rolled his eyes slightly. Zana wrinkled her nose at the half joke as she agreed. "We've been through much...I'm not certain if he would let anyone else ride him anymore.." To her knowledge no one had ridden the stallion since she had taken to him after the war, and though he allowed others to handle him from time to time no one had tried to take the next step.

Zana didn't really know what to say next, nothing much had changed from the outside of the lands but that spoke little of the family and folk she had once known inside the clan. She shifted her slight weight from paw to paw as she finally asked. "How have things been here?" She was slightly afraid to ask what she really wanted to ask. Halo and a few others had made it quite clear how they felt about her previous return, making her feel slightly less guilty for departing once more. Now she figured those few would be twice as worse, if they still remained but she had been lucky enough that they hadn't been who had found her on the border.

While he was not oblivious to her discomfort, such ideas as appearance and personal issues from ones looks were things that Ezekiel did not understand. His face had been ruined as a boy, mangled across the eye by a demon in the shape of a wolf. Everyone he had known was scarred, different in some way—so she was only peculiar because of her size. She was pretty; he admired her colors and her face, but to him, she was still a child.

Her voice was familiar. Subconsciously, he stiffened. Amber eyes gleamed as he ignored the terrible hate burning within his chest and glanced over his shoulder. No deer. No ghost. No nothing. “Well, things have changed. I lead now.” There was a smidgen of pride within his voice, though he did not flaunt his power. “Are you staying?”

Zana was surprised when it was announced that Gabriel no longer lead the clan. She hadn't really known Gabriel well but he had lead the clan well. They were still here weren't they. She stayed quiet, she didn't know if Ezekiel was a good leader but if he was willing to give her a chance she wasn't going to complain. Zana was tired of roaming and these lands had once been the closest thing to a home she had known, if allowed she'd find a place in Inferni where she could belong.

She flicked her ears slightly at the words of Ezekiel. She wasn't sure what to think of the abrupt information that Ezekiel had granted her. She had questions but it didn't appear as though Ezekiel was about to explain further. Instead he asked her a question that she had assumed would require explaination for her absence these past seasons, instead it was thrust quickly into the open awaiting her reply. Zana smiled slightly as she asked. "Am I wanted here?" her words were slightly bitter but she sighed and shut her maw before she said anything stupid. "Yes I mean." she said as she ran a paw along the stallions nose, waiting for the new leaders decision on the matter.

Zeke is sooo going to try and teach Zana to use a bow. Word Count »

Many of the clan considered Ezekiel a failure. He had done only a few things in the time since his rise to power, but they were things he had believed in. Things he knew would help. Yet he met scowls and snarls and the coyote had come to expect such hostility. Ezekiel needed allies—he had willingly asked little of Alma and Heletos for such reasons. Loyalty. If Halo and Cotl imagined they could stand against him, he would prove that he was not alone.

So he gave her the plastic smile, enamored by her spunk. She was much like his sister in that way. Talitha might have made a sharp comment like that when faced with such a question. I want you here. I brought you in before, didn’t I?” This time, he winked and shifted his weight onto one leg. “Just be loyal to me. You might not be big enough to intimidate the others, but if I recall, you have other ways to take out opponents.” She had been savage when it came to the gulls, and while he did not imagine she could survive against a wolf, there were other means. Long-distance, like his arrows, made up for a smaller frame.

The pygmy female had believed that Ezekiel had forgotten so long ago, but he surprised her once more by reminding her that it had been he who had once brought her into the clan. Her ears flicked forward as she recalled that hazy memory of so long ago. A slight shy smile appeared on her lips for a moment as she lifted her face to peer up at the newly minted leader of the clan. "Yes, it was you then."He did not ask for more than what she could give and his honestly about her shortcomings was serious but with no ill will.

She wrinkled her nose slightly but chuckled. Her eyes sparkling darkly at the thought of her war upon the gulls. Until now she had forgotten much of her life in the clan until Ezekiel had provoked the memories with the barest of words. She nodded, her words bright with agreement,"I can fight, though not in the conventional form..and I can use a spear." She fell quiet again as she thought of her hard earned skill with the skill, the scars upon her pelt showed true that she had survived til now.

Twining and twisting at her throat on a leather throng was the blowpipe he had witnessed her using so long ago. Her darts in time had gone from traditional plain sharp tips to the dips of different poisons, some fatal, some short term. She could find a spear anywhere, or even fashion another to fit her perfectly. The thoughts tumbled through her mind as she realized she had a home here still within the clan. Zana knew it wouldn't be easy but Ezekiel wished her there and for now that was enough for her. "You've always had my loyalty, still now." She said as she stood before her leader.
