Set in Grotto dei Avernus

Word Count → 000

Grotto dei Avernus had been where she had staked a claim for her den. A strange place for one to live, seeing the ground was less than inhabitable for any creature, but the trees that had withstood the change the erosion had brought on were another story. Zana had no problem in finding the massive old oak tree that she had once claimed as her shelter, even now the trinkets and odd bits she'd twined in the branches were still there. Her small frame had swung into the tree as she watched the dark stallion wander off away from her claim to find solid ground to mark his own.

She knew he would stay in the area, and if he disappeared she could always track him. Not that she wanted to but she had seasons of cleanup to do in the hollow of the oak tree and she wasn't going to worry about the large beast while she began to pluck cobwebs and old acorns from the crevice that served as the entrance high above to her safe-haven, flinging them to the soft and unstable grounds below. She grumbled to the treerats that chittered and chattered above, wondering if soon she would be tasting their flesh and leaving their pelts about the limbs of her den to serve as a remind to their kind to show some respect. She might be small for her kind, but she was still larger than theirs.

My beginning posts are always long / +527

The misty morning had beckoned the Lykoi from sleeping in to instead go out and kill something. His stomach was growling at him like some mad beast, and after checking on his grandmother as he always did before leaving the mansion (she wasn’t there this morning) Helotes made his way from its dilapidated walls and headed in a north westerly direction.

His black nose and amber eyes were on the hunt for any small game this morning, though his tongue was keen on the idea of rabbit. It was getting close to the end of the season for rabbit, soon they would be moving into their underground burrows for the winter, and he wanted one last taste before he must resign to the grittiness of squirrel and mice. However, this morning it would not be until the better part of an hour had passed before he caught sight of any movement at all, and at the edge of a river no less. He recognized this river as the one he and Ezekiel had crossed on the day of his acceptance to Inferni, and he knew it was passable. Without hesitation, he flung his lupus form into the icy waters and half walked, half dog paddled to the other side. Upon reaching it he shook himself before setting his senses upon the movement he had seen once more.

It took a moment of tense silence before he heard it in the underbrush, and Helotes jumped several feet into the air before coming down with his muzzle and front paws on the area he had heard it, but sadly only dirt and leaves. But there! There it was again! Now he saw what it was, a mink! No rabbit, but minks were sure tasty, and their pelts luxurious. Like lightning he ran after it, and it put up a good chase. He followed it for a good mile before it hid in the hollow of a damp and fallen log. He quickly stuck his narrow muzzle in the opening and retrieved the furry animal.

He killed it quickly, a sharp snap of the jaw to its neck, but didn’t start eating it. He’d have to wait until he returned to D’Neville and shifted so he could cleanly remove its pelt. With his brown, furry prize in his jaws, he took a moment to figure out where he was. The mist had thickened to a lingering fog, making sight difficult, and the temperature had risen considerably. Odd. Helotes walked for a bit, noting the warm sponginess of the ground and the musty smell in the air. No doubt this place held hot springs, something that he was glad to learn about, especially before winter. Before long, a large tree loomed up in the mist, and something caught Helotes eye. He looked, and there, amongst the tree limbs, debris was shooting out of a hollow. He watched curiously for a moment, wondering what it was exactly he was seeing. Not squirrels, for they were higher in the tree chattering angrily, so what then? Then he saw her, the smallest luperci girl he had ever seen, and he nearly dropped the mink.

She guessed that she was lucky, many of the tiny jars she had preserved her concoctions in were still there and untouched. The creatures who had explored the ones they had been able to open hadn't lived long, their tiny skeletons scattered about the den. She swept up the bones, flinging them down to scatter upon the overly moist soil below as she nodded to herself, watching the dust float and twirl with the misty fog as she shook the dust from her curly locks.

Her head snapped back as caught sight of a new creature. Growling softly she flicked a speck of dust from her ribbon wrapped tail and decided to ignore the newcomer for now. It wasn't a figure she recognized but then again the lands were always changing and the folk who inhabited them as well. She grumbled under her breath and picked up a skull of a bird who had been doomed the moment it had ventured into her wares. She was about to throw it out the hole in the oak but decided against it, instead storing it atop an unopened jar of powdered rattlesnake venom.

fyi, I'm drawing a pic of Helotes and Zana, it's cute. I'll post it in my gift thread when it's finished. / +207

Though he was certain she had noticed him there beneath the bows of the tree she was in, she chose to ignore him. Helotes set down the body of the mink between his two paws, and slowly began to shift. If she was ignoring him, he could do so in peace, and after several short minutes he had gone from his average lupus form to standing at a decent six foot five. Walking over to the tree, the hollow only a foot or so above his head, he was able to get a better look at her and couldn’t help but cock his head. She was a midget, not a child for her hips and breasts said otherwise, but a midget instead. He had never seen one before, and the sight of one both intrigued and tickled him.

She seemed to be cleaning the hollow out, hinted at by the projectiles flying from the entrance of it and the myriad of bones and other junk littering the floor beneath it. He then noticed the random knick knacks hanging from the tree and he reached up and gently touched a pronged metallic thing hanging in front of him. This must be her place to live, and that tickled him even more. A luperci living in a tree hollow? She seemed to him like a little wood elf in the tree, topped off with an adorable bow on her tail. He couldn’t help himself and fell into a fit of laughter below the tree. The whole thing was just completely ridiculous to him.

Yay! OMG.. I so missed rping this girl so badly. She's so going to fall back into her shortspeech when she's angry. lol

She had hoped that she would be lucky and the stranger would look her over, but luck had never been a friend of hers, this she'd come to accept. She had thought in the few silent moments that followed that maybe for once the bright lady had graced her, but a burst of laughter made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. It took her less than two seconds to twist around, her small fangs bared as she took the few paces on all four, her face bursting suddenly from the hole in the oak as she came face to face with the larger clan member. "Whats so laughable"? she hissed.

Lilac eyes glared at the male who was less than a foot from her short muzzle, her fingers curling around the tiny blowpine as she wondered if Ezekiel would be angry with her if she spattered this creatures maw with a few darts. With a face like a porcupine maybe he wouldn't laugh so at those he didn't know. She was use to the laughter of others, and even the anger of some of the clan, but she hadn't even had a day to settle in before the haunting chuckles and yips had fallen upon her ears.

When her petite head popped from the hole, all fangs and venom, it caused Helotes to guffaw even heavier at the sight of her. She reminded him of a pup trying to be tough and he was tempted to reach up and shut her little maw with his finger-tips. It took him several moments calm down from his laughter fit; his stomach hurt from laughing and his eyes were watered but he managed to reclaim his breath, still laughing lightly every moment. He looked up at her annoyed face, and crossed his arms before giving his trade mark grin, Jesus Christ, woman, you are tiny. He leaned up against the tree on his elbow, I’m surprised you were even able to make it up into that hollow, you must be quite nimble.

Upon speaking this he realized that he was in no way, shape, or form sexually attracted to this little woman, and this shocked him. Though she was small, all the pieces were in the right places, and this usually set him into bouts of hormonal grunting. But for some reason, whether it be her stature or her attitude, he found himself less curious about her body and more curious about her herself.

Running a clawed hand through his crimson stained mane he straightened up into a more natural standing position and his ears flitted down towards his scalp, suddenly he felt somewhat embarrassed for laughing at her, something that was very unlike the Lykoi male. He cleared his throat, I’m Helotes Lykoi, He lifted his hand towards her in greeting.

Zana snorted at the words the male spoke. Her small chest puffing up as she lifted her small head elegantly . "And you's so observant." she chimed, her fingers still itching to put some darts in that large nose before her. Much to her disappointment he leaned against her tree, a sign that he didn't seem to want to leave anytime soon. She sighed and flicked her tail in annoyance as she realized for the time being that she had missed her chance to scar up the pretty puppy's nose.

She huffed as he went on, shifting his position as she climbed out of her den entrance to perch on one of the larger branches of the tree. Her fingers and toes were splayed far apart like that of the treerats that infested her home as she kept her balance quite well. Her tone was slightly soured as her lithe irish accent played over her words. "You laugh one moment, then toss compliments the next. What game you play?" She asked, suspicious as to that this newcomer wanted.

She could tell by his scent that he did indeed belong to the clan and while he seemed to toy with her about her strange stature he hadn't done her ill harm yet. She liked her slight height that the tree gave her, even if it couldn't add it's wisdom and strength of age. She felt well enough that it gave her something. Zana wanted to grumble when the male presented his paw to her but she sighed and gave in, placing her small hand in his as she spoke. "Zana Lykoi.." she said, fully aware of how his whole paw could envelope her own.

She seemed in a sour mood, but he was determined to speak with her for a little longer. She did live way out in the boonies of Inferni, nowhere near D’Neville or the caverns so he wouldn’t see her around as much as he would the others. She placed her tiny paw in his and he looked down at it for a moment, like a pup’s paw within a monster’s, but then he looked back up with her with a huge grin when she spoke her name. AHA! Another Lykoi! Well little cousin you’re the first besides grandma I have seen since getting here! His tail had begun wagging fervently; he had been expecting a much larger family reunion when he had arrived, but instead Kaena had been the only Lykoi he had chanced upon. He wondered where the rest of them where, they had to be here! The Lykoi family was the founding family of Inferni after all. Now it was full of de le Poers, who were cousins in their own right, but still, he had been looking forward to meeting Lykoi’s like himself.

He dropped her hand and continued to smile, Hey, you can’t be upset with me for laughing, your looks are quite something. But I’m sorry little sis, didn’t mean to offend you. He felt much more ready to apologize now that he knew they shared the same blood in their veins, in fact her stature was starting to rub off on him, it was kind of cute in a way, especially with her perched upon on that branch like a little bird.

Did you just get here too? Looks like this little hollow of yours has been abandoned for a while. He nodded his head towards the crap on the ground where she had thrown it. The squirrels in the tree were still screaming at them and Helotes looked up at the little fur balls with a furrowed brow. He hated squirrels.

When her newlyfound cousin of sorts spoke of their family she frown. Her eyes looked away for a moment as she thought of half the meetings she had with their family in the past. Her voice was slightly bitter, but not towards Helotes as she spoke. "You're ever so lucky then.. I find it sometimes they don't even like eachother.." One of the main reasons she had felt the need to abandon the lands a second time had been the ever so loving welcome she'd received at the hands of her own half sister, not even knowing then, or even now that the woman was that closely linked as kin... and once they'd almost been friends, their silly childhood interests having ran hand in hand in a dangerous way.

She looked old, far older than normal when he finally apologized. She knew she shouldn't have lost her temper, but it was something she'd inherited from both sides of the family tree and it was the hardest thing to leave behind. She let a small hiss of breath out as she looked back down to him, growing more relaxed on the branch as she admitted. "It's about all I know.. but it gets tiring after a while.." She use to hide, to cry, to stay so far away from others for the longest time until she became tired of running.. instead now she let her temper get the best of her and stayed present for the foolish words of others. It was almost always a tiring event and she had a feeling sooner than later she would lose patience and put a few barbs in someone's butt or face if they pestered her too long about her size. Tiny she might be, but dangerous indeed.

Zana was soothed for the moment, able to put the laughter and teasing away as the male before her chattered on. She wasn't use to the males of their land speaking so often, but then again the last few males from Inferni she'd tried speaking to had nearly killed her for sport as a child. Aside from the male leaders that is, Zana did not go looking for trouble within the clan, but it was normally good at finding her. Just her luck.

She let her hindpaws slide around the limb of the massive tree as she laid down along its length, almost feline in appearance. Her ears pinned back as a squirrel grew too bold and landed on her branch. Quick as lightning she had the blowpipe to her lips and with deadly accuracy she let fly one tiny barbed dart that planted itself firmly in the annoyances head. The creature went still and crashed down to the ground below before she returned to Helotes question. "I just returned. Ezekiel wants me here..and I will stay for him." she said, devote loyalty in her eyes. It had been Ezekiel who had found and plaid nursemaid in a way to Zana as a young pup, the first to show her kindness then and the first upon her most recent return. Zana glanced down at the larger male at the end of her words and thoughts, acting like nothing had happened to the rude treerat.

She didn’t seem too happy when he mentioned the other Lykoi’s and frankly this did not surprise him. Though he felt great affection to those of his kin, he knew the lot of them could be murderers, rapists and terrible parents. But he loved his screwed up family all the same, he knew how to stand up against them, make a name for himself amongst them. And though there was at times bad blood between the coyotes there was also a deep brotherhood that could not be undone. This is what he had come looking for in Inferni, for the love from his father had seemed to run dry and Helotes had decided it was time to move on.

Zana calmed down now that he had apologized and his tail continued to wag softly behind him. She stretched out on the limb above him and he couldn’t help but smile; but suddenly his whole view of her changed when like a viper strike she put the small tube she had been holding to her lips and fired a dart into the head of one of the squirrels as it barked at her. Helotes’ jaw fell to the floor as the immediately lifeless body of the rodent fell to the ground to become nothing more than the other junk she had thrown out. Holy shit!

She turned to speak to him again and he looked at her wide eyed, amazed. He had been quite foolish for underestimating her due to her size, she was a spit fire and not to be messed with. After he regained his sense he grinned at her,Yeah, I get from Ezekiel that he’s a good leader. I will fight for him if he asks it of me. He looked down at the dead squirrel, its mate now long gone, having run off after seeing the murder of its fellow. You know what Zana, you’re pretty badass. I wouldn’t mind coming to see you again from time to time if you don’t mind.

Smile

Word Count → 000

Zana was quiet a moment after having spoken, and it seemed that Helotes respected that, his only words being the exclamation for her actions against the treerat. She spoke plainly as she glanced at the corpse once. "I hate vermin and pests.." She spat down upon the corpse and crossed her tiny arms loosely at the wrists thoughtfully.

She smiled at the words that Helotes spoke, the truth coming forth before she could stop herself. "I don't know what kindof a leader he is yet.. but He's always been just to me." She snapped her jaws shut after a moment, realizing what she had said of their leader, but after a moment she added. "In time he will prove his worth.." Zana nodded to herself, believing the words she spoke. Even if he couldn't live up to legends he would make his own way through the world and start a legend of his own when his time came to and end, he was their leader after all.

She was brought up from her thoughts once more when Helotes spoke, her eyes lighting up as a chuckle escaped her lips. "Aye, I am here quite often.. if not here, just give me a call..." She might not be the largest creature in the world but she was swift on her paws and would find Helotes if need be. Her lilac eyes watching him a moment as she added. "And...Thank you.." She hadn't really realized that a friend was something she needed so badly and she thought maybe Helotes could be that in time.. if she didn't screw it up.
