Into the woods [aw]

The early morning sun had yet to penetrate the deep caverns of the den but Holly was wide awake. It was not unusual for her to be up so early. Her nightmares kept her tossing and turning throughout the night, eventually waking her at dawn. She had yet to stir from her slumbering position, savoring the warmth and safety of being surrounded by her pack mates. The gentle inhale and exhale of the wolves around her made it sound like the cave with breathing. She smiled softly at that thought, picturing her pack in the mouth of a giant beast just waiting to be swallowed. Her eyes wandered over the bodies she could see from her position on the ground and she imagined each of them being slowly devoured by a large, black monster. With a start she lifted her head from the ground and quickly scanned the cave. Her breathing had become fast and her heart pounded fast and loud inside her chest. There was nothing but her sleeping pack mates. The monsters of her imagination remained just that.

She shook off the fear that had so suddenly gripped her and got to her paws. She needed to occupy her mind and keep it from drifting to such horrific images. She made her way past the sleeping wolves, weaving between their bodies until she reached the mouth of the cave. The soft light of early morning greeted her as she exited the den and she breathed in the fresh, cold morning air. Once she was in the open her fears completely ebbed. The landscape around her was beautiful and she paused for a moment to admire her new home. She didn't stay still for long though. Her paws were itching to move and explore this new land.

It was a short enough distance from the mouth of the den to the edge of the forest that she wouldn't start to panic at the absence of another. Or at least, that's what Holly convinced herself. She trotted through the thin layer of snow, taking in her surroundings with perked ears. The morning calls of the woodland birds brought a smile to her face and she looked up into the canopy to try and get a glimpse of them. "Where are you, birdies?" She whispered into the forest, squinting her eyes to try and catch their movements. A flash of red caught her eye and she quickly turned her head toward it, catching a peek of the cardinal as it flew further away.

She hopped after the brightly colored bird, chasing it further into the woods. She kept her eyes skyward as she followed the cardinal, occasionally tripping over roots and underbrush. Suddenly she lost sight of her query and though she searched the canopy for it, it was no where to be found. For the first time since she had spotted the bird she looked around, her ears dropping as she realized how far into the woods she had come. She turned around on the spot, trying to remember which way she had come from.

Panic started to settle in her chest and she gave a soft cry. It was this way, she thought as she turned completely around from the way she had been heading. Her logic would have made sense, if she had traveled in a straight line. As it was she came out of the forest in an unfamiliar place, completely the opposite direction of New Dawn's territory. She stood there stunned as the midday light beat against her back. Now what?

OOC

The rather serious discussion with Tal about what was happening to her body hadn't calmed Terra down at all. Instead of being sensible and remaining in the pack lands where she wouldn't get jumped by the first deranged male who realized she was in heat, Terra was out there challenging the world. Now that she understood what was happening Terra was a little better behaved, but not a whole lot. Now instead of targeting just any male, she was flirting and luring away the ones she believed would do best with her. Her instincts were her main guide for this, picking out the fit, healthy, and intelligent. Those that showed signs of weakness were quickly discarded.

This didn't make her extremely popular with the festival goers. Females feared she would snatch away their dates, while those discarded were left grumbling about how picky she was. None were allowed to touch her, always finding faults at the last minute. Once she almost went all the way, but her instincts kicked in, telling her that she needed a mate. The poor male had been left with a giant bite taken out of his face, warning him off. Terra had headed west after that, just letting the wind pull her in whatever direction it would.

A small brown spot in the distance caught her attention. Thinking it might be a lone fawn, born too early, Terra crouched low to the ground, sneaking towards it. When she got close enough the scent revealed a tiny puppy instead. Puzzled Terra straightened up. She wandered over to the puppy, nudging it's side gently. Where are you from? There were wolves in her fur, but too light for her to determine the source. Terra would have to have the puppy tell her, or wait with her until a caretaker came looking for the missing pup.

As she stood there, lost and afraid, a figure appeared in the distance. She could tell by its gait that it was a canine and a small one at that. Perhaps she had ended up in the right place just not back where she had started and it was one of her pack mates looking for her. She felt a surge of relief and her tail wagged slowly behind her as the canine approached. She took a step toward it only to recoil as the colors of the canine's pelt became a little clearer.

Holly froze in shock and pinned her ears back to her head. It was too late to run and hide. It was going to get her and she couldn't do anything about it. She backed away slowly, her eyes fixed on the coyote as it came nearer. She had made it back into the forest when Terra got close enough nudge her. What was with all the scary things and touching her? She was helpless to do anything but stand there, sinking lower to the ground as she was asked a question. Why did it want to know where she was from? Wasn't it just here to eat her up? Maybe it was asking so that it knew if it was safe to eat her. Deuce had told her that coyotes wern't allowed in the pack lands. If her pack was around they would drive her off.

Holly took in a deep, shaky breath and then let it out in a loud, high-pitched yip. She was calling for help and anyone within earshot would hear the tone of desperation in her cry. She hadn't been in the pack very long but she hoped that if they knew she was in trouble that would come running to her side. After her outburst she would regard the coyote with a fierce anger in her eyes. Her courage faded fast however and when she spoke it was full of the fear she felt. "'O..otees aren't a..allowed. Deuce t..told me." Her voice was barely above a whisper for all the conviction that had been on her face just a moment ago. She stood there trying to look as small as possible while she waited for something to happen.

The pup's terror seemed to grow at her touch. Wondering if the puppy had been abused Terra let out a low growl. Nobody would hurt this pup, not while she was around. She looked around, searching for any apparent threat. There was nothing there though, nothing showing any sign of where the puppy had been. Ducking her head down she sniffed at the puppy again, perplexed. If only she knew where the puppy had come from. A loud yip escaped from the puppy, and Terra jumped back, surprised by the sudden noise. The puppy glared at her with lots of anger, though it quickly melted back into fear as the puppy spoke.

It took her a few minutes to piece the words together. Otee=coyote. The puppy was just not saying it properly. The puppy was scared because she was part coyote. She came from a place where coyotes weren't allowed. So, it was a New Dawn puppy. Terra was pretty sure none of the members were pregnant, but she didn't know nearly enough about them to be sure. She wondered if they had taught the puppy to fear coyotes, but the pack was too new for that. Smiling now she knelt down to the pup. Don't worry. I'll take you back. She moved to scoop the puppy up, already tracing in her mind where the pack borders were.

OOC Never fear, Auggie's here! xD

Word Count → 787

The first light had not even graced the world when the black and white hued Epsilon rose to greet the day. He was careful, as always, not to disturb his pack mates as they slumbered and soon exited the yawning mouth of the communal den. He inhaled a deep gust of the chilly winter air and saw immediately to his duty. Strolling in an easy gate towards the west he stopped himself at a brisk stream and drank deeply to build his reserve. When he was finished his belly was swollen with water and he was licking the straying drops from his black lips. He was off in a moment, a flash of black and white headed for the borders as he did every morning. It gave him a sense of purpose to do so, made him feel that he was a valuable member to his new pack, and family. He would defend them from any danger that came to call, no matter how great or small the threat, he was the one to deal with it. It was one of his duties now, no longer just an idle pastime.

When the scent barrier reached his nostrils he lowered his head and trotted along the line, careful to note where the scent was faintest. When he found a patch of dwindling strength he would pause and spray a couple drops until his scent rang clear, a warning to all. This was his task, as the task of his superiors, and he would see it done. His eyes often strayed to the land beyond, to ensure that there were no wolves or other, less welcome entities seeking to enter without permission, or wishing for an audience with the wolves within. There were none that he could see to stop his progress until he reached the woods. A fresh scent was scattered amongst the foliage, leading him on a wandering path towards the border, and beyond.

It was an aimless course, but recent. Whoever had been here they must have been chasing something or someone. He saw no hint of a hunt, no scattered fur or carcass and he traveled on, more urgently than before. His paws soon led him to his quarry and he heard voices, one familiar, and one hardly more than a squeak. There was another scent here, which he soon realized as Terra, recognition shown in his yellow and green flecked gaze and he caught her in his sights, but there was something else. Amongst her usual aroma was a sweet, inviting smell, and he took a greater whiff, feeling something stir within him. He froze, it wasn’t until he spotted the small reddish pup cowering not a foot from him that he snapped out of it.

He shook his head violently and sniffed at the little creature, thankful that he hadn’t stumbled into her. Her scent sang of New Dawn, and he realized that this must have been the pup that the pack Delta, Deuce, had taken in. What was she doing out here? And how could Deuce have let her out of her sight? He was a little annoyed that it was now up to him to recover the whelp and return her to the den. He was an Epsilon, now, a warrior, and defender of the pack, a master of the hunt. Deuce should have taken better care of her. But he found he could not blame the old woman. He remembered how unruly he had been when he had been this young, but still, this was not his job, and he would have to recount this occurrence to Deuce, and pray it did not happen again.

He eyed Terra a moment, then, before returning to Holly. This reunion could wait, he needed to see to the whelp. He came up slowly behind the pup to stand over her. His eyes observed her carefully, noting whether or not she was injured. She wasn’t and a feeling of relief washed over him. “Whelp.” He called out to her in his low, gruff voice. “You should not be here.” He did not mean to appear so frightening, but the pup was in need of discipline, and unfortunately, he was the only one here that could do so.

When he saw Terra move to reach for the pup an instinctive growl rumbled low in his throat, and he raised his tail, though lowered his head over the pup.“Leave her to me.” He cautioned, oblivious to any bond of friendship at this point. He could not permit Terra to cross the border, for he still had superiors to answer to and they would not be pleased if he let a coyote mix into their midst.

Don't worry. I'll take you back. Holly's face revealed the mix of emotions that surged within her. She was frightened, that was obvious, but now she was also confused. Why would the coyote want to take her back to her pack? Wasn't it here to hurt her and those she loved? It seemed that the girl didn't want to hurt her and for that she was relieved. But this exchange overrode everything she already knew about coyotes. They were dangerous and they were killers. Her assessment of the species had only been reaffirmed when she had been taken into New Dawn. They kept coyotes from their lands and allowed only wolves to join the pack. So, why would this coyote offer to return her to the safety of her pack. It just didn't make any sense.

So lost she was in her thoughts that she did not notice the arrival of Augustus until he was right behind her. She jumped as his voice sounded from right behind her and she leaned back and tipped her head upward to look at him. Though he was an unfamiliar wolf to her she could smell the pack on his fur. He was there to protect her from Terra and she was not afraid of his harsh words, not knowing they were directed at her. She had never been called a whelp before and he had every reason to tell the coyote that she shouldn't be there. Again, she was confused. Her pack mates attitude toward the coyote was that of hostility and yet the coyote has been kind to her. She was unsure what to think and she just stood there watching the interaction and becoming increasingly confused.

Terra stopped what she was doing as Augustus approached, the smell of the new pack on his fur. He set about disciplining the pup, something that brought a small smile to his face. She was sure he was just as inexperienced with pups as she was, moving only on instinct. She stiffened as he growled at her. Terra wasn't a threat. She would never harm a puppy, yet he acted like she was doing exactly that. You honestly think I would harm her? Her words were a snarl. So this is the thanks I get for the help I gave you. Fine. Terra turned, giving the pup a couple licks before nudging the pup towards the pack member. Anger burned through her, turning her normally bright eyes into a storm.

She stood there, hackles raised, challenging Augustus to do something that proved he wasn't turning against her. Terra knew now that they turned her away because she was part coyote, a fact that she had always been proud of. Terra had turned from Inferni because she mocked their brutality and found it ridiculous to put so much emphasize on one's heritage, believing that it needed to be earned, by skill and trick. Yet those she had trusted turned against her, simply because of what she was. The worst part was that Terra had believed they had accepted her once.

The pup was cowering and stank of her fear. Augustus noted that, but was relieved to some extent that she had found Terra first, not someone less friendly. With Inferni so close it was crucial to keep well within the borders, especially a pup. He gazed down at her auburn frame with his paws on either side of her, acting on instinct. It was a new feeling for Augustus. He had risen to the task of protecting Titania when they met the stranger, his new brother, Jiva, but this. This was different. This was no full grown wolf, capable of defending itself, this was nothing more than a child, and a young one at that, prey to some creatures. And her delicate little life was in his paws. The compelling urge to lick the young ones face and body washed over him and he found himself bathing her with his warm tongue, comforting her in one of the few ways he knew how. After all words were wind, and puppies needed more physical reassurances than an adult wolf.

His ears twitched to Terra’s angry words, how could he have forgotten her, and why was she so angry with him? He was only doing his duty, how could she not understand that? She was half a coyote, and although the other half was wolf it still remained a large part of her being. Zalen had been clear enough how he felt about them, and he was his superior, his alpha it as not within him to question that authority. There was nothing he had done to tarnish his reputation in Augustus’s eyes and he followed his will obediently. Even now as he stood over the pup he’d learn to call Holly. Terra’s scent would be on her fur, no doubt, and he didn’t want the fact to be noticed, or worse, held against Deuce. He did not doubt that Zalen would deal with her justly, but still, pups were born to wander, and Deuce had been nothing but gracious and kind to him.

“No, I don’t.” He replied with an echoing snarl, nothing more than a return for the one she’d given him. He truly did not believe the girl capable of harm, but there were larger things at play here, she had to understand, and if she didn’t he’d be forced to make her. He bared his teeth when she reached out to the pup and nudged her towards him. Was he not clear the first time? “Don’t touch her.” He warned, there was no snarl this time, but his teeth remained a line of pale daggers between them. He watched her every move as she turned away, keeping his head just above the pup’s body. His lips hid his fangs from sight for the moments that followed, but his tail was still high above his back. He was more than just a subordinate now, and here, the border was not far from them. He had all right to display his dominance, but hoped that she did not take it to heart. These were the ways of the wolf in ancient days, a way of life New Dawn was striving to return to. It came more naturally to him than others, he’d lived this way even after the virus swept across the world consuming man kind with it.

His eyes regarded Terra carefully, gaging her reactions. For the first time there was anger in her eyes, but he felt it could not be helped. His family came first, and although her safety was not at issue, their integrity was. With a nudge to the pup he stepped around her to approach Terra. Once within a mere foot of the coy wolf he spoke, “Terra.” He addressed her, calm and quiet. “There are greater things here than you and me.” He started to explain, his eyes peering into her own, trying to read them. “And I know you were trying to help, but she’s not your concern. I will see her back to the den and sort this out, and you cannot come with me.” His gaze turned to the pup for a moment before returning to her. “Things are different here than in the Court, and I have to ask you to stay away. We have no love of coyotes, and I’m afraid that your presence here does more harm than good.” He paused a moment, “I-I’m sorry I just hope that one day you’ll understand.” It was all he could do to stop this from happening again, and although it hurt him to say it just as much as it did for her to hear it, he was firm in his beliefs, and knew this was the way it had to be. When left with the choice between family and friendship, he would choose family every time.

Holly leaned back into Augustus' legs as he showered her in licks. She was comforted by his larger presence and was glad that she was no longer the center of the coyote's attention. She listened to them talk back and forth, and their words became more hostile with every exchange. She shrunk back further and took a seat almost underneath the older wolf. Her ears remained pinned to her head as she tried to understand what was going on.The true meaning of their words was beyond her but she gauged the interaction by the tones of their voices. All she really knew was that they were angry and she started to blame herself, as young ones will often do.

Of course it was her fault that they were fighting. She was the one who had gotten lost and strayed too far from the pack's den. Her mother had often scolded her for venturing too far; why should her new family be any different? Riddled with guilt for what she was causing she turned her gaze to the ground. She would surely get a reprimand when the white male was done dealing with the coyote. After all, it had been she who caused the coyote to come so close in the first place. They were not allowed and with good reason. Her whole pack agreed on that, at least from what she had witnessed so far. She sighed softly and with sadness as she burdened herself with the shame. Already she was troubling her new family. They might even kick her out! Her sadness grew, replacing her fear, and she sat their looking forlorn as the older canines continued to talk.

Terra's ears flattened, though it wasn't of submission. That wasn't in her. Her wolf and coyote blood, battling so fiercely inside her, always fought with this. Showing submission without a care to sooth broken hearts, standing defiant before those a wolf would submit to. She understood he was protecting the pup, but protecting it from her seemed rather ridiculous. Augustus approached, and her hackles rose, afraid that he was going to attack her. Her body shifted, prepared for flight. Instead words came out. Something she never truly understood, living by her wits and instincts. Cocking her head to the side she listened softly. For the first time she felt shame for what she was.

Crouching low to the ground Terra was unable to meet his eyes. Sorry for not being a wolf. She didn't understand, she was unable to. The battle between wolves and coyotes wasn't new to her, but actual hate between them was. It had always been a simple conflict of survival, the wolves protecting their kills from those who survived by stealing them. This was beyond that though, something deeper than instinct, something inside one's soul that spoke of such things. Her ears twitched as she noticed the pup, drooping with sadness. That wouldn't do. No matter what Terra's problems with the pack might be, she couldn't let a puppy be sad. Taking a step away from Augustus she brightened her voice, tail wagging. It was very nice to meet you. Little puppy, don't go wandering past the borders anymore, alright? She caught Augustus' eyes, silently indicating towards the sad puppy.

He watched her carefully, noting the tension in her stance, and replying with his own stiff-legged posture. If she tried anything, he’d be ready for it. Instead, she quickly relaxed and cocked her head at him, but then things turned for the worse. She lowered herself, not in submission but in shame and his eyes sought her own desperately. He was failing, her bitter words echoing in his head. That wasn’t what he meant at all. He wasn’t turning against her, he was just warning her, for her own sake. If Zalen had been here, things might have been far worse. Couldn’t she see, he was protecting her! He was at a loss, standing there, jaw dropping to gape at her as he struggled for words. He didn’t see how he could make her understand. When she turned to address the puppy he stood stiff as a board, gazing at the small creature, then back to Terra. She caught his eye then. He closed his jaws and nodded solemnly.

He strode back to the puppy, standing tall despite how he felt inside. It had all been in vain, and he couldn’t help but feel that he’d made an enemy this day. ’Join the club.’ He thought bitterly, anger rising within him for a moment, before he forcibly calmed himself in the puppy’s sight. “Let’s get you back to Deuce.” He said gruffly, lowering his muzzle to grab at her scruff. With the pup safely in his jaws he gazed back at Terra. He suppressed a whine, and soon found himself redirecting his eyes towards the border.

The conversation remained stiff and unfriendly until its conclusion. Holly kept her eyes cast down, though they did not focus on anything in particular. The coyote had become distressed as Augustus tried to explain the situation. She was sorry. Sorry that she wasn't like them. But it wasn't her fault.. was it? Holly's bias toward the coyotes had been gained from one isolated experience with them. That didn't mean all coyotes were as mean as the ones who had murdered her family. But that didn't stop her from feeling terrified whenever she saw one. Her confusion continued to grow but she bottled the questions up. If she asked them now she wouldn't get the answered she seeked.

Terra brightned as she spoke to Holly and the young wolf couldn't help but slowly wag her tail in return. Her voice still held the dejection she was feeling, however, and her forehead was crinkled by the multitude of emotions. "O..okay." She wasn't sure how to deal with the thoughts and feelings she was experinecing. How did everything suddenly become so complicated? She didn't have long to mill over the events of the past few minutes before she was lifted from the ground by strong, but soft jaws around her neck. Her body automatically went limp within the grasp but she still managed to give Terra one last, long look before Augustus took her home.

The wag of the puppy's tail reassured Terra. The puppy wasn't harmed, just a little stressed. Sorrow was in her voice, but hopefully that would fade. Terra remained cheerful until they faded out of sight. Turning her head dropped. She hadn't expected this. The last time they'd been together had been so wonderful, nestling together in her room, as pack mates. He had left the pack though, and now turned against her as well. A sorrowful howl rose in her voice, released to the air, her wolf blood for once showing through in a clear long call.

She couldn't dwell on this though. Already her instincts were egging her on. She needed to find a mate. She needed to find a release for her desire. The encounter faded in her mind, blinded by the haze of instincts, and Terra trotted out, beginning her search again. She moved east, looking around. Maybe she'd be lucky now. Terra would find a wonderful mate, and they'd join together, and everything would be perfect. Happily her tail wagged as she broke into a lope, following her instincts.

It was a steely, robotic movement when he turned his back on Terra, but he felt there was nothing more he could do. With the pup safely in his jaws he walked slower than he would have normally, to make the ride smoother for the little one. He was soon greeted by the scents of the border, Zalen, Titania, Soran, each whispered and he let it cross beneath his paws without another thought. When they were safely within New Dawn he turned his head to look back, just in case Terra had chosen to follow after all. He saw and smelled nothing and were the pup not in his mouth he would have sighed. Instead he halted and lowered the whelp gently to the ground, releasing his grip on her scruff. Once she was safely grounded again he turned his yellow eyes on her, trying to keep his thoughts at bay. He bent his attentions to the task at hand, his jaws opening once, but closing again as he sought the words to say.

“What is your name?” He asked first, wanting to know just who it was he was scolding, and hoping to put a face to the name to avoid confusion with Deuce when he let her know of her ward’s misbehavior. He paused a moment, gazing at her all the while, waiting for her answer. He raised his tail and ears, towering over her. “You should not be wandering like you did. You could get killed, do you know how close we are to the coyotes!?” His voice was all a growl as he scolded the little girl. He didn’t know just how much she would understand, but he continued on, regardless, hoping some words would hit home and the pup would realize her mistake. Not only that he feared for her safety, if another had found her, she may very well have been nothing but a pile of bones. “You do not leave the Den unless Deuce is with you…Do you understand?” He was all in a huff, now, and said nothing more, not knowing what it was he could say. His eyes turned towards the den, praying for some sign of the white female, but he found none and he gazed helplessly at the auburn whelp before him.

Holly was dropped to the ground once they were safely back in New Dawn's lands. It took her a moment to steady herself after being limp throughout the journey. Unsteady on her paws she took a seat and looked up at Augustus as he tried to find the words to scold her. She answered accordingly when he asked for her name, giving him just simple, "Holly.", before letting him continue. Her ears lowered as his rose and her front legs buckled so that she cowered beneath him. At the word 'killed' she visibly flinched, closing her eyes until she flinched again at the word coyotes. Were they really so close to the coyotes that ones would turn up just outside their borders? She had been told she woul be safe from them here and yet she had just run into one. Granted, she had been safe and Augustus had come right to her rescue. She had thought there was nothing to fear as long as she stayed here with New Dawn.

She opened her eyes at the mention of Deuce and looked up at him. She nodded her head solemly. Yes, she understood. It wasn't as safe here as she had been led to believe and she needed to stay near those who could protect her. However kind the coyote she just meant had been they were still dangerous and they were close. It was her fault they had been fighting and now she was getting scolded for causing the coyote to come so close to the pack. "I.. I sorry." She whimpered softly and hung her head in shame. She had just been accepted into the pack and already her family was angry with her. She just wasn't good enough. She hadn't been good enough for her mama either and out of all the siblings she was the one who got scolded most often. She didn't realize that was because she was the one who pushed the boundaries the most often. It didn't even cross her mind.

His eyes were on the pup, searching for any glimpse of understanding. Her name was Holly he found out and he nodded slightly. Good. He’d be spared the embarrassment of simply calling her ‘the whelp.’ The man wasn’t well versed in pup-rearing and let his gaze wander awkwardly. She cowered beneath him and he aimed a rough nudge at her. She twitched strangely and he gazed at her quizzically. He watched her hang her head and his brows furrowed notably. "No, no…It’s okay…Just…don’t do it again.” He offered hastily. She looked a sad little thing and he started to panic. His pleading eyes beseeched the den entrance, looking for somebody anybody to take the pup from him, deal with her in the proper way. He feared he’d gone to far. “Cheer up, okay.” He urged forcing an awkward half-smile onto his muzzle, hoping to lighten her mood.

He felt ridiculous, and no doubt, looked it too. To prevent further awkwardness his tongue lashed out suddenly towards her scruff and he attempted to bathe her, hoping she’d draw comfort from this action. His tongue flicked slowly down her back, and he was soon attempting to roll her over to get at her soft belly. It wasn’t a tender touch, but it wasn’t rough either. He sat on his haunches when it was done and gave her a good long sniff. There was the subtlest hint of Terra’s scent, but Augustus was sure that it would go unnoticed. He lifted a paw to his muzzle to wipe away a puff of creamy fur from her belly. He sighed finally as his gaze twitched towards the borders. Oh he was so behind. Were the circumstances any different he would have finished patrolling by now and still had time to stop by Avalon and keep watch over his favorite herd. There was no helping it now and he returned his gaze to stare at the whelp in full. “Be thankful, I’m taking you back to Deuce. If I catch you again, I’ll take you right to Zalen. Do you understand?” His voice was gentler now, if not a little restless. “Off you go now.” He said as he aimed a nudge at her, indicating the den before them. “Holly.” He called shortly after. “Be a good girl, okay?” He waited for her to start towards the den before following.
