Word Count :: 395 Someone to gawk at the boat with him or tell him about it? ^^

The prince had finally reached the pier, to see the reason that Cercatori d’Arte had opened its borders to the outsiders. He galloped along the boardwalk, nearly slipping and bumping into other canines as he ran. He weaved between legs, his ears swiveling forward as he heard the low rumble of the ocean waves. There was no fear in his heart, however, even as he scented the briny sea and remembered his own near-drowning there. This was different; he was among many others, safe, protected, and it was warm for late winter, and the sea looked tranquil rather than angry and thrashing—from what he could see of it.

Most of his vision was blocked by a monstrosity made of wood, and Skoll finally skidded to a halt as he stared at the impressive feat of engineering constructed by the artists. His mouth gaped for a moment, and his pink tongue spilled out as his lips quirked into a grin. This was absolutely amazing! He’d never seen a boat before, maybe some decayed ones docked at Cour des Miracles’ port Lunenburg, but those had obviously not been as majestic as this ship bobbing on the water!

He could barely even comprehend that luperci made this. It was big like a building and wooden and grand, as if transported out of the time of the humans. He’d no frame of reference, of course, but it was a miracle floating before him nonetheless. And it prickled at his mind as he stared—that maybe he could build something when he got bigger, when he’d shifted into an upright torso and dexterous hands. Maybe not a boat, but if an entire pack could construct a seafaring vessel, maybe he could make something smaller all by himself! His expression grew hazy as his thoughts deepened, but at that point a gull cried overhead and nearly splattered him with a messy white projectile.

Tilting his head up to bark at the sea bird, giving it the dirtiest look he could manage, Skoll trotted along the pier once more to get closer to the ship. He wondered if the d’Artisans would let people climb on it, or if it was only to look at and not touch like so many things adults had. He laughed at the thought, energized and happy, and as he padded closer let out a low “Wowww!”

Day by day we fall apart, disintegrate the lightning rains across the sky, but comes too late to change the mood and save us now; it's criminal the way we love, the way we hate it's almost human.

Escorting Skoll to the open pack had seemed like a good idea when Terra thought of it. She didn't think about the fact that he was a rather curious pup, had a tendency to explore everywhere, and that she would actually be responsible for something other than herself. Once Terra had gotten her fill of the pack she realized that the pup who should have been velcroed to her side was not there. Which was probably a good thing, considering how she'd managed to kill a member's pet rabbit. Definitely not something she wanted to have Skoll know about.

Returning to where the boat was Terra found Skoll gawking up at it. She stood behind him, studying the boat as well. It wouldn't be long now before Skoll towered over her, a mere inch keeping her height over him. She wasn't one to stay still for long, and moved past Skoll to nose at the boat. It bobbed gently just like it had the last time. Pleased that it hadn't changed Terra backed up again to look at it. Luperci definitely made the wildest things.

Among the scent of salt and wood, a more familiar smell surfaced. The boy turned to look at his pack mate as she approached in silence, looking at the large vessel. His tail began to wag until he realized he might have been supposed to stay with her, but she didn’t scold him or anything as she stepped past him to poke the boat with her nose. He grinned slyly and looked around to make sure the d’Artisans wouldn’t get mad, and he reached out with a pale paw to poke the wood.

Satisfied, Skoll stopped testing boundaries and instead pranced over to Terra’s side once more. “Isn’t it awesome?” he asked enthusiastically. “Whadduya think they’re gonna do with it?” That question had only recently come to mind; boats were meant to travel on water, he knew, but where were they going to go? He didn’t think the entire pack would go out to sea, would they? Some wolves did; some wolves in Nova Scotia came from across the entire world. It was an overwhelming thought to the pup that had yet to see beyond Cercatori d’Arte and his own pack, but it was exciting nonetheless, and he had to laugh.

“Are you havin’ fun?” the child went on, nudging her with his shoulder. He realized with another chuckle that he was about as big as her, his wolfdog blood raising him larger than her more coyote heritage. He wondered if he’d be as huge as his father, or even as huge as Alder, though he doubted that. It would still be a small victory to be able to knock Terra down for revenge.

For now, however, he pretended to be ignorant of their size prospects, only smiling innocently at her like the kid he was and would be for a while yet.

Terra grinned at Skoll, nodding her head. The most amazing thing I've seen. Deciding not to display her ignorance in front of a pup Terra kept herself from ranting about how amazing that it floated on water was. Asked what they would do with it Terra cocked her head. The uses of such an object hadn't occurred to her, still at the stage when just looking at it and clambering all over it was entertainment enough. I suppose they'll use it to keep stuff they want out of reach of strangers, and use it to reach places you can't get to on land. Yes, that made sense. Terra nodded her head. That's exactly how she'd use it.

Asked if she was having fun Terra's face contorted into mock horror. If I'm not, will adult Skoll scold me? Laughing Terra nodded. I believe I'm the one who's supposed to be asking the questions pup. You didn't get into trouble while I was off, did you? Terra hoped not. It was bad enough that she had. Terra didn't want the pack to think that all of her pack were rough miscreants. It was really just her that caused so much trouble.

Terra agreed with him, and the golden prince continued to wag his tail as he looked back up at the thing. Her explanation made sense as well, and he smiled as he thought about it. “Like islands?” he asked, turning back around to her. “Or they could go far far away to the other…the other…everywhere!” He found himself at a loss for words and embarrassed about it, but he did his best to hide his lack of knowledge. He didn’t even know if the region was all one piece of land! They could be on an island right now and he’d never know! Only experience and wandering would teach him these things, and he was too young for that.

The coywolf turned his question onto him, and he giggled at her horrified expression. A cocky grin danced on his lips, only growing broader and brighter when she asked if he’d gotten into trouble. “Nope, I’ve been a good boy,” he proclaimed, tilting his chin up. He had been on his very best behavior for Bambi and the others, and he’d even made friends.

“And I caught a mouse!” Skoll blurted. “Bambi and me went an’ hunted and I caught a mouse!” Oh, if only he had the proof to back up his claims, but what little there was of the prey was in his stomach. It hadn’t been much more than a mouthful, really, but it was still something he had hunted all for himself.

Terra grinned down as Skoll joined in on describing what the boat would be used for. He had a much better grasp than she did, having been born landlocked. All the things that came with living near water was a mystery to her. Far away over the edge. At least, the edge as far as Terra saw it. With no conception of how the world looked like she thought there was nothing beyond all the water. If there was she wouldn't be greatly surprised, having already had her idea of what the world looked like changed before, but until then there was only one giant piece of land that everyone lived on. And islands. Whatever those were.

Her tail thumped happily as Skoll spoke, declaring that he'd been behaving. At least the pack had seen one good representative of the court then. A well behaved pup spoke volumes more about a pack's nature than an ill behaved adult luckily. Hearing that he'd caught a mouse had Terra lifting herself in pride. She had very little to do with it, but hearing that he'd caught his own prey was great to hear. Stepping over she nuzzled him. It's rabbits next. Big, fat, juicy ones. Terra licked her lips at the thought.

Far away, over the edge—it might have sounded funny to a scholarly luperci, but Skoll only pondered the phrase and nodded. He supposed the world could have an edge; there wasn’t any evidence against it. His understanding of the world had no real need to transcend what he could smell and touch and taste and hear and see, and while he might have entertained spiritual ideas from other canines, the prince might remain grounded. His mind was clay, ready to be molded toward whatever ventures the gods and fates saw fit. It was a cliché, but it was true for one who hadn’t even yet learned how to shift.

There would be time for traveling, time for sailing over the edge of the world. He might have desired to grow up, but there were long months yet before all the mysteries and magics in the world concerned the sun-blessed boy.

He smiled broadly at her approval of his behavior because, despite all of his boundary-testing and cocky dominance, he did want to be good and nice in others’ eyes. He was raised by moral parents, shaped into someone polite and kind, though he had his flaws and potential for sins like everyone else. He could proudly say that he behaved in the d’Arte lands, though. He was better behaved than Terra, at least—though he didn’t think badly of her for the trouble she seemed to get in. It made her fun, and she was good at it—good at not almost being eaten by a bobcat or an ocean, at least.

His tail wagged and curled as she nuzzled him, and he beamed and nipped the tip of her nose playfully. “And then deer, and then a moose!” Skoll barked. He began to run in circles on the dock until he nearly tripped, and then his growing body plastered itself to the wooden boards as he looked suspiciously at the sea. As his mind wandered along the track of food, however, he blinked and smiled at his companion. “And a whale! I could hunt a whale—’cept I never hunted fish before even.” His smile quickly turned sheepish.

Terra growled playfully at the nip on her nose. Tail wagging she watched Skoll dance with excitement. Terra wasn't too curious about going out into the world, but she'd seen a fair bit of it just wandering around, and she wasn't one to stay in the territory anyhow. The idea was interesting though. Terra just wouldn't be the one to get on the boat and find out. No, she'd leave that for more...adventurous canines. Ones that wouldn't be worrying about whether or not they'd be close enough to shore to swim back if something happened.

She laughed as Skoll described the prey he would be hunting, though she had no idea what a whale was. Fishing though. She'd learned how to catch fish. I can catch fish. A whole lot of them! A complete exaggeration, as she'd really only caught a handful, but hey. It was enough for a meal or two. Padding over to the water she stared down, wondering if any fish were close enough. It didn't look like it, and Terra didn't want to go swimming either, judging from how deep it was. She turned back to Skoll and licked his head gently. Got any other adventures planned for here? Terra had already managed to cover most of the territory, and had been highly impressed. Skoll might still have things to see though.

“You need to teach me!” Skoll declared in a happy howl as she said she could catch a whole lot of fish. He wanted to learn how to do everything in the whole world, though the boy was realistic enough to know he couldn’t master everything. He was eager to try new thing, though, and maybe he’d be a good fisher if he gave it a try. He frowned and asked as an afterthought, “Do I need hands for it?” It wouldn’t be too long until he made his first transformation, but he wasn’t sure how much he would like the luperci form. His daddy enjoyed being on four legs, and if the creamy-yellow prince turned out the same way then he’d like to know how to do things without the need for his bipedal form.

He squinted as she licked him then wagged his tail thoughtfully. “Maybe go an’ see if they have cool stuff, like horses an’ stuff. Isn’t Cercatori all arty and stuff? I met a girl, Erzulie, she drew on me.” He mangled both proper nouns, but that didn’t keep him from grinning wickedly. He remembered running to his parents with a big veve painted across his body.

Terra nodded her head at Skoll's request. She was perfectly willing to teach him. Not that he would likely stay still long enough for that to happen. Fishing took a lot of patience. Terra didn't do it often, with faster and easier ways of getting something to eat. It was worth it when she really wanted fish though. Terra smiled at Skoll's questioning if hands were needed. She shook her head. There were some things she needed hands for, but fishing wasn't one of them, luckily enough. Terra worked hard to make sure that she could do almost anything in all three forms, especially things that involved survival.

Hearing that someone had drawn on the prince brought outright laughter from the coyote. The image was just too funny, picturing Skoll running around with a drawing on him. It certainly was a pack full of art, but drawing on others? That was hilarious! Not something Terra would ever do. Well, she might stick Skoll in a mud puddle, but that hardly counted. Horses being listed was unexpected though. They had horses in their own pack. Cocking her head she considered. Maybe see the tree with all the carvings on it?

Word Count :: 193 Feel free to pp them walking to the tree. Big Grin

The coyote hybrid might laugh, but Skoll still thought fondly of the day the d’Artisan had come to the Court lands to draw on him. She’d taught him a lot about ghosts and spirits although a one-time explanation had done nothing for his beliefs. It was still something few others could brag, and he was kind of mesmerized by the thought of having other colorful markings on his fur. Maybe once he learned how to shift, he could make paints and do it himself.

Her suggestion made his ears perk up. “Oh, yes!” he barked, already enthusiastically bounding past her to race toward the tree. He’d heard a lot about it when the borders of Cercatori d’Arte were mentioned, but it was still something more amazing than he could imagine—even if the concept was much simpler than building a magnificent boat. It was only painting and carving on an old tree, but they didn’t have anything like that in Cour des Miracles either.

He stopped short suddenly, and a sheepish grin found its usual place on his lips as he looked over his shoulder at her. “Oh um—where is it?”

I will beat the odds;
I can go the distance.
I will face the world:
fearless, proud and strong.
I will please the gods;
I can go the distance,
till I find my hero's welcome,
right where I belong.

Skoll immediately took to the idea, conveniently forgetting he had no idea where it was. Terra just sat there, silently shaking with laughter as he raced off, waiting for him to come back to his senses and return. A foolish grin painted her face, and it was hard to tell who was supposed to be the adult of the pair. Sure enough he stopped, asking where the tree was. Gracefully Terra stepped up, striding happily over to the pup's side, managing to keep from laughing.

This way. It wasn't too hard to find. Terra had heard all about it from conversations. From there she'd placed the tree on the map in her mind. It wasn't an exact location, but close enough that she would be able to spot it once they reached the area. Running around they eventually reached the grand tree. Terra stared up at the tall creation. Bright colors and carvings swarmed over it, so bright and beautiful. Deciding to get a better look she concentrated on changing into optime form, bones cracking and rearranging to give her a taller view. Walking up Terra ran her hands over it. Absentmindedly she ended up climbing, and soon enough was hanging upside down, still tracing the carvings with her fingers from high above.
