Ithiel is by me!

The land stretched before him, flat and barren. This was the Waste, the heart of Inferni's territory, and Ithiel reigned over it this morning, his bow in hand and a quiver full of arrows slung on his back. Zedekiah circled high above him somewhere, playing the scout's duties even as his master practiced. His query was small and quick, and they therefore made excellent practice. Rabbits were not supremely difficult to strike with an arrow, but moving targets were always preferrable to something stuck in a stationary position in the trees.

It was not as if the rabbits he killed would go to waste, in any case -- he could bring the pelts to Myrika, and he could smoke some of the meat for Zedekiah. There were always hungry mouths in a clan, Ithiel knew, and there was no dearth of rabbits on the Waste -- they were innumerable, vast hordes of them populating their underground tunnels. They preferred this landscape, and with the vernal signs in the world, they were coming out in force, eager to eat their way out of winter leanness.

The dusky coyote urged Lystra on faster, and the big mare snorted, obliging her master's command. He held the reins of his horse in his teeth so he could use his hands to shoot, something he would not have dared to do months before, when Lystra was at her wildest. She had calmed greatly since the weeks Myrika had worked with her -- and Bairre with Ithiel -- and now, mounted archery was a reality for the man. Rabbits were harder to hit from horseback, and the Vigiles preferred to practice his mounted arts. It was not difficult to shoot from the ground, standing still. He drew back his bowstring and aimed, letting fly a moment later. The arrow whizzed past Lystra's head and the horse jerked, coming to a sudden stop and half-rearing.

Ithiel grabbed the reins with the hand that had held the arrow and held onto her, slinging the bow over his shoulder so he might pat her shoulder and neck with the other hand, murmuring soothing without words at the big chestnut mare. Though the whites of her eyes showed and her head was still thrust high, the big horse did not rear again, and after a moment, Ithiel was able to coax her forward again. He had noticed the thick scars along her back, and meant to point them out to Myrika. He thought he knew what they were, but could not be certain, and wished for his cousin's equestrian expertise.

Trotting forward, Ithiel saw the arrow, sticking up from a brownish mound of fur. He had struck the little creature in the neck, and his arrow was intact. Smiling, he slid from Lystra's back when they were close enough, picking up the arrow first, followed by the rabbit. Clutching it by the ears, he remounted and trotted back to the coniferous bush he'd chosen to hide his kills. The rabbit joined three of his fellows, rudely thrown down by Ithiel. All of them were half-white, shedding their winter fur, and it left a curious pattern on them. Perhaps they were no use as pelts or skins, but their meat could still be used.

Keeping busy was the best way for the Optio to feel useful, as she grew restless easily when she was within Inferni territory, and luckily it was not difficult to keep busy. Patrolling itself took a lot of time if she was thorough, and there were the young scouts to harass, other members to spar with, and plenty of rabbits to hunt.

The coywolf streaked through the tall grass of the Waste after one such creature now, executing a leap characteristic of her mother’s side to bring her down on top of the animal as it attempted a sharp turn. Teeth went to its neck, tearing without any precision as her jaws worked in the canine way to crush organs and bones and end life as soon as possible. Perhaps it was inelegant compared to a cougar suffocating their kill silently, but such a distinction had no place in the female’s mind. She simply wanted to eat.

She might have taken some care to stow the bones away or otherwise quickly abandon the kill site if she were in neutral territory, for some luperci could grow violent when they were after an easy meal, finding fighting easier than hunting. However, this was her land, and after picking the carcass clean to the best of her ability, she abandoned it. Besides, there was a turkey vulture circling overhead to take care of the last tiny scraps of meat clinging stubbornly to the animal’s ribcage.

Vesper paused at that thought, cocked her head. On a whim, she traced the imaginary trail of the avian and had a guess at where its master might be, so long as this was the buzzard she was thinking of.

Even more on a whim did she shift, taking a good amount of time for bones to lengthen and some mass to be gained. While she still preferred running on four good legs, her growing lessons in optime made her use the form more frequently. Her speed wasn’t impeded too much as she jogged through the Waste toward the scent of the Vigiles—and his horse, which gave her pause as she stopped to watch from a distance. Her entire frame tensed when the beast reared, prepared to bolt from the monster, but the liver equine was taken under control again.

She watched the tall, willowy man pick up a rabbit pierced by an arrow. Interest stirred, but it was only an idle fancy that passed moments later; archery was an intriguing skill but not one she could ever hold claim to. She still approached the dusty-brown coyote with a hint of admiration when she saw his catch under the bush.

“Hello, Ithiel,” Vesper greeted. She acknowledged him as one lower than her in rank but otherwise equal; she’d never cared for the trivial exchange of dominance and submission that wolves tended toward. She wouldn’t throw a fit if others bowed their heads to her or not, so long as they gave her respect and didn’t piss themselves trying to appease her. She didn’t think this man was among the latter, however. “Saw your last shot; it was impressive.”

Ithiel is by Raze!

Although his mount still had her moments of weakness, weeks of working with Myrika and the Bairre horse she'd brought from Freetown had helped shaped Ithiel's perception of horses differently. He had never bothered listening much to Kastra except where orders were concerned, else he might have picked up valuable information from her. Still, it was better late than never -- Lystra was a powerful animal capable of much, but she was also damaged goods, too. She had not been treated kindly, he thought.

The dusky man was inspecting the arrow he'd plucked from his most recent conquest when the noises of a quiet approach reached his ears. He looked up and found the Optio approaching him in her four-legged form. Ithiel observed this with interest -- he was not averse to his own shifting abilities, but he was a creature of dexterous capability, and much that he did required hands and arms and two legs rather than four. Still, he did not dismiss his own birth-form as useless -- certainly, a nose lower to the ground tracked scents better, and eyes closer to the ground missed less in the way of signs.

Thank you, he said, dipping his head respectfully. Lystra snorted and Ithiel offered a pat to her shoulder. The mare was not entirely discomforted by other Luperci -- strangely enough, it seemed to be other horses she had an issue with. Still, it was best to dismount, he thought -- it was disrespectful to be at such a height with one's commander, though he was not so subservient as to shift once he was on the ground. Archery is a skill I have valued since I was small, he offered, thinking it would make for pleasant small talk. It didn't occur to him to inquire on her well-being, or perhaps it had, and he deemed it too inconsequential -- he didn't particularly enjoy such inquiries; they seemed, essentially, meaningless pleasantries. I used to watch the older trainees every day, willing my paws to turn to hands so I could start to practice, too.

Faster, his body urged, and the massive animal under him responded in kind. Viggo was not a horse made for true distance, but all horses were made to run. He snorted and pulled his head forward, and Ezekiel clung to the thick mess of fiery colored mane that flew against the wind. Riding bareback allowed for the silent communication that the Aquila preferred. Every muscle in his legs responded to those of his mount, and this silent understanding was what made them such a powerful team.

The land of the Waste was favorable for horses, and the well worn trails formed compacted earth lines that made travel easy. It was over one of these they ran, the golden and red-painted coyote hunched against the wind and the horse thundering along. Truthfully Ezekiel was small enough to fit atop nearly any horse; his larger wolfish cousins needed a horse of the chestnut’s size given their own weight. More value came because of Viggo’s temperament and his strength.

Though training had extended the massive horses’ stamina, he still could not maintain such a speed for long. Froth was already forming along his body, and his breathing was labored. Ezekiel leaned back and the horse slowed to a canter—Ezekiel would not force him to walk so quickly. To his surprise (or lack thereof) the sight of two familiar shapes grew on the horizon. He turned towards them, and used the distance to ease Viggo into a trot. The big horse announced himself with a whinny, calling towards one of the many mares he considered his own.

Ithiel dismounted from the horse, and a part of Vesper relaxed. She had always been uneasy around the large creatures, but she was reminded often of Helotes’ warning that she would have to learn. It was a weakness, and weaknesses had to be tackled and destroyed. Keeping a wary eye on the mare, she listened to the archer explain what he’d thought of the skill as a boy.

“I never dreamed my paws could turn to hands,” the lean coywolf stated, deciding it wouldn’t be too polite to smirk, “let alone be able to hold a bow.” And she still didn’t believe in the second part, as was somewhat obvious by her dull glance toward the wood weapon. She respected it, certainly, as she respected other luperci-made things that served an obvious purpose. However, it had always seemed way beyond her.

A horse’s whinny made her whip her head around, and she hoped the scout wouldn’t see it as an overly paranoid reaction. If the liver horse was frightening, Ezekiel’s big Viggo was even more so. She wagged her tail at the Aquila nonetheless.

“Pardon me,” she said lightly, and tightened the core of her body to spur on the change from four legs to two. Because it took her longer than born-luperci, she wouldn’t have shifted in the middle of conversation, but it would take a little while for the leader to approach them.

Her optime form was lanky and awkward and feral as always, her arms still drooping awkwardly; she wasn’t used to her appendages not being on the ground at all times. Swiftly, she crossed them over her small breasts so her skinny limbs wouldn’t just dangle.

Ithiel is by me!

The dusky man was surprised by his Optio's admission, though he regarded her with his usual indifferent countenance. She was not born a Luperci, then, or perhaps she had not realized her own abilities. It was an interesting thought, one the Caelum had not considered -- he had always known he would one day be able to turn his form, and he had looked forward to that day with eagerness. The man was preparing a response, one that did not call into question her birth and origins, when a horse's cry distracted him.

Lystra gave an answering sound, and Ithiel perceived Ezekiel, riding forward on his big stallion. Vesper excused herself and began shifting. Ithiel glanced from one sight to the other, and his eyes settled on his companion's shift. He did not find shifting something to be ashamed over, but he had not considered others' perspectives, of course. As the woman finished, she put her arms over her body, a queer motion that provoked a tilt of the dust-colored hybrid's head. Stand stronger, he suggested, although not terribly unkindly, and he even punctuated the statement with a smile, albeit one he forced.

The dusky man slipped his bow over one shoulder and waved to Ezekiel, pondering what business his Aquila had with them. Lystra trotted forward to greet Viggo and turned to move alongside him.
