Spring
Just out of reach

I'm on my own. That single thought kept running through her head like a bird song: repetitive and relentless. What little protection Kiara once had was gone. After the loss of their leaders, Ichika had dwindled down in size till nothing was left. Then it simply broke apart. The pack had disbanded, and Kiara was left to fend for herself and her small puppies. She continued to remain inside Wentworth Valley, her den and its precious contents tied the white female to the former pack lands.

The young mother no longer dared to travel far from her den. She hunted within close proximity to the burrow and used a nearby stream to provide most of her meals. Kiara had even gone so far as to mark her own territory. The scent markings were placed in a quarter mile radius around her den. Without the safety of a pack, she had become extremely paranoid. Already a fox had met its end by her jaws when it dared to travel too close to her den.

Every day her puppies grew larger. They were a moon old and were almost completely weaned off of her milk. Feeding them and keeping them safe had become Kiara's primary concern. To make matters worse, Kohaku and Lucia were learning at fast rates and had begun to fight for dominance. Most of their tiny duels ended in a draw, at which point their mother had to separate them. Both had learned early on to stay inside the den when their mother was out hunting, but Kohaku had been pushing his luck recently. Kaira was constantly worried about their safety, especially with all of the recent developments.

It was early morning as the new mother left her den. Kohaku and Lucia were both still asleep, so she moved carefully so as not to wake them. Once clear of the tunnel, she bolted towards the nearby stream, the pain in her shoulder she completely ignored. On her way she picked at the small rodents that were scattered around the forest. It wasn't the best place to find the small meals, but she had little choice in the matter. Carefully, the arctic wolf entered the stream. There were still some remnants of ice that littered its banks, and the freezing water bit at her paws. Kiara moved carefully in the stream, her steps slow and calculated. A large fish swam by, but spun around once it noticed her presence. With a powerful leap, the young mother rocketed after her prey. She chased the fish upstream where the water flowed faster and was shallower. Once there, the fish was caught between the rocks and became easy prey for the hungry wolf. Kiara grabbed it's tail and moved back down stream along the river banks so she could enjoy her meal while still staying close to her den.

ooc: From what I gathered there was a HUGE misunderstanding. But regardless of that, hopefully there can be some closure or resolution?

The pack was gone in name but not spirit. Though its size had dwindled, there was still a remnant of it to be had. And it was for those that remained, that still held on to hope that she walked the familiar grounds where her home still remained, shared by those she held dear.

Despite the absence of those that faded away of their own volition, life carried on as it had. The grounds were still marked with the heavy paws of a determined stride. The red trails of mane and blood still followed in the wake of a golden form. And there were still the songs of avian and wolf in the air… more so now as a reminder to the listening ears that a presence lingered and still thrived.

Her maw was clasped around the young hide of a deer, smarting shoulder covered by the spoils of her kills to protect it from further wear of her chore. While she would have desired to call the group together to fend on the meat of her capture, rather than risk them further part, she made the effort to bring the spoils of her day’s hunt to them, where the siblings waited the young and the experienced, and where her dearest friend and companion waited.

Overhead circled the pair of owls acting as the guides toward where their camp within the Wentworth remained. For a wanderer at heart keen on taking the Endless Path with a renewed sight of what was before her, she was more than willing to remain upon familiar and trusting ground. The grass bent beneath the weight of both her step and kill as she neared the growing collected scents and for the countless time, like a mother calling to her children, announced her presence and her return… unknowing to what else still stirred in the woodland.

Chara Linard was out of the loop as far as this whole disbanding went. As far as she was concerned, this was the typical way of the pack. Talking all family, but being scattered as heck. Techinically it would take only ten minutes to go talk to someone, just follow their trails. But Chara wasn't the type to go seeking company that she didn't have to face.

Even this case was so-so. She hadn't meant to bump into them, she'd just been tracking some prey. Bumping into X? Hadn't been on purpose, but Chara figured she could stop by for a brief chat. It could only help to be in the alpha's good graces. That's what she was assuming this female to be, right or not, that's how it was in Chara's mind.

The scent of a mother came to her nose… Yup. Mothers smelled different from the norm. Even if they had stopped lactating they smelled different. Pups smelled different.

Chara, in seeing in the distance that the alpha had a buck with her, turned tail and started walking away. She didn't want X to think that Chara was using her for free prey. She could hunt on her own, and that would be downright selfish to just keep on taking. The cream colored mutt made a note to bring something over to X when she caught something, to make up for the prey that she and her sister had been given.

He came in regularly with food for Kiara. His worries had been increasing, noting the fact that the pack borders had grown weaker and weaker. Only a single scent marked along there now. Worried Tharin broke all protocol, cutting over the border. He raced for where he knew Kiara's den was, dropping the grouse that he'd captured. His movement was reckless, following the path he'd crossed before. He almost ran into another wolf on his way, snarling as he passed by in his rush to reach her side. She had pups! The pack had fallen, and a single mother on her own was no laughing matter.

He entered the clearing, spotting Kiara cautiously tucked near the stream. His eyes lingered on her for a second, making sure there were no new injuries before his attention flipped to the large golden wolf that was there, a kill hanging at her feet. His mind screamed threat, immediately leaping forward to protect the one that he had claimed as pack, if not by scent then by heart. He stood between them, hackles raised. It was a second before he realized their scents were mingled, relaxing down again. Turning he looked over Kiara, nudging her softly. What happened?

Powerful jaws worked furiously as the hungry mother stripped the fish bones clean of their meat. Fish was by far her favorite food, yet she didn't dare take the time too enjoy herself. Despite her rush, Kiara left nothing on the carcass, and soon she was licking her lips and looking for more. Without moving, her sapphire eyes scanned the river for any other prey that might be worth her time. She didn't want to waste to much time on small fry.

Kiara was about to stand when the scent of a freshly killed buck caught her attention. She raised her snout to the air and took in several deep breaths. X'yrin's unique scent floated through the air and was almost completely overshadowed by the smell of food. X'yrin and her kill were quick to appear in the forest and Kiara had just begun to rise when Tharin came bursting through the forest. The arctic wolf froze in surprise at Tharin's sudden entrance, their eyes quickly met before he turned to face the former Alpha. Aggression flowed from his large form as Tharin's heckles raised. Kiara was in such a state of shock that it took her several moments to realize what was going on.

Thankfully, Tharin managed to calm down just as the young mother had wrapped her head around the odd situation. The silver male quickly joined her side and the two exchanged simple greetings. His question wasn't surprising, but it made her heart fall. Ichika had fallen and she was stuck without a pack with two helpless puppies to take care of. White ears wilted as her tail ducked between her long legs. Even though she knew it was silly, the young mother didn't want to admit what had happened. Denial had taken over her mind and admitting what had happened out loud would only make reality fall around her. Instead, Kiara turned her sapphire eyes to X'yrin and strode over to the golden female, her tail wagging low with an apologetic smile on her face. However, the enticing smell of meat pulled the alabaster wolf's attention from X'yrin to the kill at her feet. Kiara stood momentarily hypnotized by the alluring scent of food.

There was life other than the remnants of a whole that still dwelled within the Wentworth, this much was made certain as they allure of meat brought out the unaware and hungry. Her own appetite was sate by the blood of the killing blow, rendering her mute to the plaguing desires to feed that felt the others. But she was keen to notice the scents as they wafted into her flaring nostrils and forced a pause in her stride.

She caught the babble of the river in one ear and approaching steps in the other. Again she inhaled the scent above the kill and caught the hint of the reserved Linard female. She offered an acknowledging growl as she placed a step forward to proceed, but stilled again at an all too familiar waft mingling with the essence of young. The carcass fell away from the woman’s maw as she looked toward the river and the spot of white that stood against Nature’s hues. An excited chill coursed the length of her spine, erecting both tail and hackles as instinct bid that she bound to the young mother and lavish her endearingly.

But her ears met the hostile tones of some unknown figure and all manner of elation and excitable acts were gone in an instant. Her sights bared down, alarmed at this sudden intrusion upon this moment of reunion, then widened as the fleeting moment of stark aggression was replaced by confusion. As if he had not bared the voice of hostility at all, he turned to the young mother with a worried voice earning a deepening scowl of confusion from the autumn dame. A friend of the white wolf, perhaps?

X’yrin remained silent as she watched with brightening spirits as both her friend and prior packmate came toward her… if only to assess the meat in her possession. The she-wolf lowered her head and kindly lapped the snow hued crown in greeting. “It is good to see you,” she admitted warmly, though in the midst of her kind words, did not relinquish her protective stance over the meat. “In your absence, I had assumed you too had left… but I am glad to see this is not the case.” Carefully, she wrapped her jaws around the neck of her kill again and turned toward the watchful Chara. “You may eat with us if you’d like,” though her back was to Kiara and her companion, she craned her head back just enough to catch their eye.

The moment she saw the male and female together they fell under the mates category that she had in her mind. Well… Let them have at it. It didn't matter to Chara what the two did. Personally Chara was just glad for the confirmation that the only male wolf in the pack was indeed taken. And her sister- she doubted- would ever try and rip away a man from his family. She didn't realize or know that this male wasn't from the pack at all… Or even that the pack had been disbanded.

The acknowledging little growl fell on deaf ears for the she-wolf, who had already started to pad away in the seeing of the prey. But the words addressed to the wolf in question her role-player would assume were louder so that it would reach her. "It's not my place, I'll take a raincheck on that sharing deal. Say… Two days from now? Me and my sister will bring the prey and we can all meet here."

Chara sounded coldly business-like and formal in comparison to X's cordial invitation to the feast. But it just wouldn't feel right by her books to take a bite when she still hadn't returned the favor for the first prey that X had brought around to their home.

The sorrow in Kiara's body was enough to let Tharin know. There was no pack anymore. She was on her own, standing against the predators of the world with her pups. His offer of protection when he'd come with Zalen before came to the forefront of his mind. New Dawn could take care of her. Not that she could travel. Tharin would just have to make sure that the other pack members knew about what had happened with Kiara so they would lend their strength to her as well. She wasn't a member of their pack, but their alpha had deemed his protective actions worthy, letting him offer the pack's protection to her.

He watched her step over to the golden wolf standing before the kill. The warmth in their interactions was enough to assure him that she wasn't a threat, leaving him to move so he could keep an eye on the den and the pups that would surely be hungry enough to attempt to clamber out. His ears twitched, studying the strange female anew at the words. So this had been a pack member. Higher ranked, clearly. Perhaps she knew why the pack had fallen. Then again, from the cold interaction of the other female seemed enough to clear up that question. She was cold, obviously not attached. He watched her warily, wondering if the meal would be offered for Kiara as well.

Even though they were no longer pack mates, Kiara still trusted X'yrin enough to allow the close proximity to her den. Tharin had also earned a similar trust, although the young mother was dead set on keeping her puppies hidden away and safe from the giant wolves. It wasn't that she thought they would intentionally hurt the pups, Kiara was afraid of the unintentional and her instincts only increased her fear till it became paranoia. However, the young mother's trust did not expand to the fourth member of the group. The multihued female, although she smelled like Ichika, was unfamiliar to Kiara and thus automatically became a threat to her puppies. Kiara kept a watchful eye on the retreating wolf, her deep blues filled with distrust and nervous suspicion.

X'yrin's gentle greetings were met with a friendly whine a lick to her muzzle. The arctic wolf noticed the golden female's protective stance over her kill and backed off slightly. So much for sharing, but they were no longer pack so it was to be expected. Kiara turned her head to watch the retreating female, but her ears flicked back to X'yrin at her words. "No, I haven't left. I've just been busy. The puppies are really rambunctious, so they kept me close to the den." Kiara didn't want to mention that she had no other choice but to stay behind while the pack boundaries crumbled around her. If Kiara had a choice, she would move them to a safer location. However, the puppies were too young to move, which meant Kiara was stuck in the former pack lands.

As her former leader turned to address the strange female, Kiara retreated by to Tharin's side. She gently brushed her shoulder against his before circling around him to observe the two females. The stranger held a cold tone, despite the fact that she obviously knew X'yrin. This only made Kaira more suspicious and nervous. She kept a constant watch on the female, almost daring her to cross a line. Even if the snow wolf was a terrible fighter, her wrath as a mother knew no bounds.

Fragmented as the pack had become, still the woman had a fondness for that still dear to her heart. She smiled and the young mothers confession, sharing what she could of her good will while carefully keeping the unknown male under watchful eye. While he posed no physical threat to her outright, still the woman knew better than to let assumption rule her actions toward an unfamiliar body. Again, she spared him a passing scrutinizing glance before devoting her attention to the alabaster mother, her delicate smile just waning slightly at the less than subtle tones of the more brash of the Linard sisters.

X'yrin sighed softly as her invitation was rejected outright though she took no direct offense to it. The golden woman had made little time to get to know, let alone bond with the 'harder' of the two siblings, making it difficult to carrying a candid conversation without some kind of wall separating the two of them. Even this rejection was taken as the result of some kind of reservation set between them, keeping the girl from being more open. Rather than convey her distress, the she-wolf simply nodded and left the female be. Eventually time would be sectioned just for her... but she had to be willing to accept it and make something of it. For now, the Nomad was more inclined to tend to the mother and her friend.

"Remaining close to the den, I can imagine how difficult it has been for you to hunt larger game." She relinquished her possessive hold of the meat and let it fall soundly at her paws. Lapping the lingering gore from her maw, she smiled to the young mother as her companion whilst inviting their approach with an awkward extend of her forepaw. "There is more than we can eat alone... perhaps you would care to feed yourselves?"
