The reason why I made this table.

Kohaku stood on his hind legs with his forepaws leaning against the thin trunk. Wide eyes stared up at a bird who rested peacefully in the top of the tree. His stomach rumbled and he whined softly. Lucia looked up from her play and wandered over to where her brother. She too turned her gaze skywards and saw the black bird. Its bright red shoulders caught her eyes and her tail wagged so hard that her rear began to shake. She turned to look at her more colorful brother and watched as he tried to climb the tree. At the base of the tree, there was a narrow sections where the very first branch split off from the main body. It was unusually low to the point where it was easy for the tiny male to climb on top of it. It took Kohaku several attempts to climb on top of the limb, and all the while Lucia watched with an expectant gaze.

A loud yelp broke through the quiet clearing and Kiara's eyes flew open as she stood alert. The young mother had been taking a pleasant nap, but even in her shallow sleep she was still wary of danger. "Haku!" Lucia's loud, worried cry caught Kiara's attention as her daughter came rushing toward her. "Momma!" The arctic wolf looked around frantically until her focus rested on Kohaku. His deep blue eyes stared at her pathetically as he whimpered from his place in the tree. The young puppy had managed to get himself firmly stuck between the two parts of the tree.

Kiara chuckled at the humorous sight and softly strode over to her son. "Mommy." His small, young voice sounded so sad that Kiara's heart gave out. "It's okay Kohaku, mommy is here." Without another word she reared up on her hind legs and braced one forepaws against the tree, one each side of Kohaku. Her large head bent down and she grabbed the scruff of her son's neck gently with her teeth. The white mother was able to extract Kohaku without too much trouble and soon he was bounding off to wrestle with Lucia. Kiara remained by the tree and watched happily as her puppies wrestled one another.

This wasn't his first time heading over to see Kiara. It wouldn't be the last either, as he made the trip every couple days to bring food for the young mother. Finding her without a pack, and unable to move had him patrolling the area she lived in daily, even if he didn't check in on her, not wanting to interrupt or seem too intrusive in her life. A small offering was clutched in his mouth, a tiny eaglet that had fallen from it's nest. He had killed it quickly, and brought it over to where Kiara was.

He arrived in time to see the end of the drama. Grinning Tharin let out a low woof to let her know he was there. It was just like Kohaku to get himself so stuck. Tales of the pups' adventures filled their time together, when they weren't playing themselves and doing various other things. Dropping the bird he raised his tail, proudly waiting for the happy greeting that he knew would follow. Tharin might be fairly serious in nature, but being around Kiara he could just relax, knowing it didn't matter.

The entire area smelled like Tharin and with her focus on the puppies Kiara didn't even notice Tharin till he announced his presence. Kiara quickly turned around and raced towards him. A smile was spread across her maw and her tail wagged furiously in the air. Lucia and Kohaku both paused in their wrestling to stare at the adult male. They had seen him around before, but never had any direct interaction with him. Two sets of blue eyes watched and observed the behavior of their mother and the other adult.

"Tharin!" The white wolf ran directly up the her giant friend. Her ears and tail were low in a submissive gesture and she showered his maw with licks. As the two wolves greeted each other, Lucia untangled herself from Kohaku and made her way over to the adults. Kohaku, not one to be left out, wasn't far behind. "Rin." Both puppies had curious eyes and their tails wagged so hard that their butts wiggled as they moved. Kiara turned around and herded both puppies back into the den. Lucia protested loudly and shouted "no" over and over again, while Kohaku babbled away and whined. Neither of them wanted to stop playing and both wished to meet the adult. In many way, Tharin had become their surrogate father.

Kiara turned back to Tharin and nuzzled his shoulder. "Morning." When his mother wasn't looking, Kohaku and Lucia had run to the mouth of the den. The tiny male tried to exit the hole but stumbled and tumbled back into the tunnel. Lucia's ears pricked and she jumped after him. It wasn't long before the sound of their playing filled the clearing again.

His tail wagged in response, turning into a wild frenzy. He licked her muzzle as happy whines poured out. Moving along he sniffed at her body, licking at her scruff, ears, and cheeks before returning to her muzzle once more. Nothing too important, just the scent of fish and a couple other stray wolves. Mentally Tharin noted to help strengthen the borderline Kiara had set up around the den. Perhaps that would keep intruders away.

The pups tumbled over during their greeting. Tharin looked over with surprise as Lucia piped up what sounded rather like his name. He lowered his head down, smiling softly at the bold pups. Tharin didn't move closer, letting the pups set the pace. They were still rather young after all. He chuckled as their mother turned, promptly herding them back towards the den. The protests pouring from them was deeply amusing to listen to, not ready by any means to return to the safety of the den instead of continuing to play.

The large male nuzzled along Kiara's back, feeling her safe and close to him as she nuzzled at his shoulder. Good morning. He pushed the dead bird forwards, tail wagging a little. Thought it would make a good snack. Maybe they could practice pouncing on it as well, just the beginning of how to hunt. It wasn't enough for Kiara to eat, but he couldn't get very large meals on his own.

The arctic female whined happily as Tharin licked her back and soon the clearing was filled with their greeting. The large silver male moved around her, checking her health and scent. Kiara also took the chance to sniff Tharin as he moved around her. The giant male was the picture of health and the scent of pack was deeply engrained into his fur. A twinge of longing and loneliness plucked at her heart strings, but it was quickly forgotten as Tharin licked her ears and nuzzled her cheeks.

Kiara was grateful for the respect and consideration he showed towards her puppies. Tharin had never asked to see them, although he seemed to greatly enjoy the stories she told about them. The silver giant had offered her New Dawn's protection and had helped her feed the puppies for the past month. He understood why she kept the puppies safe in the den, and even as they approached him he stood still and allowed the puppies to set the pace. The white female was almost sad that she had herded the puppies into the den. Unfortunately, the new mother was still very wary of other adult wolves and she was sure that they would be off soon anyways.

So her guess had been right, the eaglet was in fact for the puppies. "Snack or toy. Either way, it will be just what they need. As always, you have been so helpful. I don't know how I can ever thank you." Kiara shook her head and quickly moved the eaglet into the den. Lucia and Kohaku were more than trilled to receive the eaglet. Kiara watched them briefly as they littered the ground with feathers and blood. She would have to give them a bath later and then somehow clean up the feathers.

Watching the puppies eat made the snowy wolf feel hungry as well and she turned back to face Tharin. "Race you to the stream!" She was in the mood for fish.

Tharin's tail wagged. There was no need for thanks. He didn't seek any. Pups were important, and he rather liked Kiara. If it made her smile, he would probably do it. Luckily she didn't expect too much of him. Tharin could just be himself without worries about what he might do in front of her. The dead bird was thrown into the den, feathers soon flying, a couple appearing in his line of sight before settling back down again.

Tharin bowed down before twisting, taking off towards the nearby stream. He still didn't know his way around here as well as Kiara did, though his scent often lingered through the nearby trees. The stream was coming into view, tail held high. The large wolf slowed down as he got closer, not wanting to end up running straight into it. His paws splashed in as he turned, looking for Kiara to join beside him.

In the past several weeks, Kiara and Tharin had gone from complete strangers to close friends. Whenever Tharin was around, the young became completely relaxed and returned to her usual puppy-like demeanor. Every moment they spent together was a blessing for her. She was able to simply enjoy herself and to forget the responsibilities that had been placed on her small shoulders.

As soon as the words came out of her mouth, the game had started. The hulking male momentarily lowered into a play bow before he shot off towards the stream. The muscles in Kiara's powerful body coiled before they propelled her forward like a tightly wound spring. Her large paws flew across the ground, her jaws parted to allow her rosy tongue to hang loose. The arctic female had a serious size disadvantage, but she knew the terrain and practically soured through the forest. Soon the scent of water and filled her nostrils and invigorated her. Kiara slowed down as she reached the stream, her lithe body moved easily to her command. The alabaster female's shoulder still bothered her, but it was a slight pain that the young mother easily ignored.

The stream's wet body tickled Kiara's paws as she entered the river, water flew everywhere as her paws landed heavily on the stream bed. Sapphire eyes watched as startled fish darted away from the predator. Her tail wagged gaily in the air and she turned her sparkling vision towards Tharin. The snowy female loved the water. She loved how it wrapped around her body and caressed her fur. Most of all, she loved the rich delicacies that lakes and streams offered.

Hunger teased the young mother's belly and she turned her attention back to the stream. The stream ran low and quick, rapids foamed at certain locations while other's had deep pools. Kiara headed towards the nearest pool and jumped in. Water flew everywhere and the fish scrambled to escape. Some went down stream while others headed for the tiny rapids farther upstream. Kiara lunged after them, her paws scraping against the rocks as she quickly moved out of the deeper pools.

The arctic wolf chased after the fish, her eye on the largest individual. She chased her prey back and forth along the stream bed, each time heading farther upstream where the water was more shallow. It didn't take long for the fish to slow down enough for Kiara to wrap her jaws around its tail. The fish flopped and squirmed, trying to escape the wolf's jaws. Slowly, the female made her way back to shore, her prize gripped expertly in her jaws. Once safely ashore and away from the riverbanks, Kiara dropped the fish and smiled. The fish wasn't as big as a salmon, but it was a start.

Tharin shook himself out as water sprayed against him. Dipping his head down Tharin took a couple laps at the water, tail swishing cheerfully behind him. He stilled as the sight of fish came to him through the clear water. The hunter was always ready to take something down, and since he hadn't brought anything in for Kiara this time, he could make it up to her. Perhaps catch a really big fish. He stepped further in, trying to wait for the fish to come towards him.

Unfortunately when it came to fishing Tharin didn't have a clue what he was doing. He could bring down land animals no problem, but living where water was usually frozen, and only broken into for a drink, left his fishing skills rather lacking. As Kiara expertly drove the fish the large wolf retreated spluttering to the shore. Soaked he looked around, watching the fish scatter. As soon as Kiara had caught something he plunged back in, this time mimicking her technique and driving a sizable fish into the shallows. Grabbing it he dragged it out, tail wagging proudly as he dropped it next to hers.

Plunging back into the river Tharin growled at the fish, paws swiping playfully at them. The fish began to scatter, and Tharin started again, chasing them hither and thither across the stream. He snapped at several unsuccessfully before he caught one to bring back to their pile.

The fishing expedition took Kiara back in her memories, back in time and to a far off place where the valley of her birth resided. The broad river and expansive lake that nested between the two mountains was an excellent spot for fishing, and it was there that she had learned all of her skills. She had learned how to fish in both shallow and deep water. Although she preferred shallow water fishing in a river, Kiara excelled at many different styles of fishing. Her fondest memories were by the stream and Kiara had naturally grown attached to the water. As she moved through the river, she could almost feel her old family by her side.

Once the young mother had claimed her prize, she moved to the shores to enjoy the rich delicacy. Her jaws eagerly dug into the meat and she watched with glee as Tharin attempted to copy her fishing strategies. It didn't take long for the giant male to grab a fish of his own and he dropped it next to Kiara with puppy-like pride. His tail wagged behind him, spraying water around. Kiara's own fluffy tail bounced on the rocks behind her and she smiled approvingly at Tharin.

Again, Tharin dove into the water and the alabaster female watched as he chased after the fish unsuccessfully. She quickly finished off her own fish, left the remaining bones on the shore, and dove back into the water. Kiara ran upstream along the banks, following Tharin and his startled fish. Just as his head dove into the water, she jumped into the stream and expertly snapped up on the fish Tharin had missed. The two both grabbed their fish and deposited them into the pile. "Stay upstream, I'll drive them too you."

Kiara went off, her focus on the deep pools which housed plenty of large fish. She splashed into the pools and snapped at the fleeing fish. A small school swam upstream and the young mother followed them. She snapped at their tails and made an effort to splash as much as possible. Water flew everywhere and her coat had completely soaked through. The cool water felt wonderful against her skin and soothed her shoulder and tasted even better.

Nodding his head Tharin stood further up the stream, water lapping at his paws. His head hung low, waiting for the fish that he knew would be driven rapidly towards him. Patience was the key now. Holding still was easy enough for the hunter, used to waiting long times for prey to move into the perfect position to take them down from. Kiara entered the water, her small form making a much louder presence than Tharin had the entire time, splashing and sending water everywhere.

Eagerly he watched the school of fish come driving up, tails flashing everywhere in a panic. Closer. Closer. Swiftly he darted forwards, head flicking into the water. A fish flew up towards the shore, followed by another from the school. He managed to grab another two in the panic, sending them to join the others before the fish started wising up, becoming more difficult to catch. He chased one around until it was caught, carrying this one to shore.

Wordlessly, the much larger male took Kiara's direction and moved farther upstream. It was an interesting role switch. Kiara was normally the submissive one of the pair and had easily accepted the role. However, with her greater experience in the area of fishing, she had temporarily taken on the more dominant position. The young mother made a mental note to herself to make a show of her submission after they had gotten plenty of fish.

Tharin waited patiently as she drove the fish towards him and their tactics were quick to pay off. Any fish that Tharin didn't catch, Kaira chased and deposited on shore with their growing pile. The arctic female repeated the process several times until they had enough fish to satisfy both wolves. Drenched, tired, and hungry Kiara returned to shore. She stepped aside to allow Tharin the first go at the fish. With a great shake of her body, she managed to get rid of a decent amount of water from her soft coat. The rest of her coat would air dry in the spring sun.

Sapphire eyes scanned the horizon as she listened closely to see if there was any signs of danger. They pair were well within earshot of the den and would know immediately if the puppies were in danger. Even so, Kiara couldn't help but worry. She was their mother, their guardian and protector. In a way, it was her job to worry needlessly. Kiara turned her gaze to Tharin to see if it was her turn to eat. Her tail wagged hopefully and she smiled at the silver giant.

Fish after fish was grabbed, piling up the shore. His tail wagged as he eyed the large bounty they had received. Shaking the water out of his fur Tharin grabbed a fish. Swiftly he swallowed it down, tail wagging. It tasted different from what he normally ate, but still very good. Grabbing another one it quickly disappeared as well, letting Kiara stand guard while he ate his fill. He left some of the best fish for her, though he did take the lion's share with his large size.

Stepping back Tharin looked at the pile, satisfied that there was enough for both mother and pups for a meal. He glanced over to Kiara and dipped his head in permission, letting the white wolf step forwards to eat her fill. Briefly he cleaned his fur from the fish before looking around, taking his turn at keeping watch. Ears turned at every sound, making sure nothing could threaten the small claim they had.

The young mother diligently stood guard as Tharin shook himself off and began eating. Her expression was serious and her senses alert for anything that could signal danger. She had claimed the immediate area around the den as her own, but one wolf was not enough to keep others at bay. Kiara's maternal instincts always aggravated her mind and screamed at her whenever she went off with Tharin or by herself. She wanted more than anything to simply stay with her young puppies and protect them. However, with no pack to help her she had only Tharin to rely on and even he couldn't proved her small family with enough food.

After a while the giant male stepped back and gave Kiara permission to eat. She let out a thankful whine while her tail wagged happy and low. The arctic female ran over to Tharin quickly to give him a few licks before she dug into the fish. She ate greedily and quickly finished the rest of the pile. The succulent taste filled her mouth and made her whine happily. Fish was by far her favorite food, although come the end of salmon season she would be sick of it. However, the taste was once again fresh and new and just as wonderful as she remembered it from the previous fall.

When Kiara was done she licked her chops and left the pile of bones. The young mother moved closer to Tharin and gently nuzzled his shoulder. Content with the world Kaira sat down and smiled. "That was a wonderful meal. So, how have you been Tharin? Adjusting well to the luperci pack?" Unlike Kiara, Tharin had not so readily accepted the luperci and he often seemed awkward with their ways. Even the uninfected female was still very awkward around the luperci, although not as much as she once was. It took time to get used to their world.

Several licks met his ascension for her to eat. His tail wagged enthusiastically at the touch, bending down to lick at her head gently. He enjoyed these brief moments snatched together before the need to get more food, and care for the pups, and return to the pack returned and they had to part ways again. The pups were getting older, and thankfully soon they'd be old enough to move. Perhaps then they could travel to New Dawn. Much better protection for them there, and Tharin wouldn't be alone in his task. He knew that the entire pack knew about it, but he still felt uneasy leaving her alone, even if he had to.

With the fish polished off Tharin smiled at Kiara. He rubbed at her body affectionately, keenly aware of how mingled their scents were. It was even stronger than his pack smell at times, though that was very rare and usually only after spending a whole day playing together. Asked about his pack Tharin grinned, pleased with sharing it. The alpha spends a fair amount of time in the two legged form. It still makes me a little nauseous when they change in front of me. All those bones shifting around so unnaturally...It was enough to make anyone ill. They work fairly close to how I'm used to luckily. I'm learning. I had no idea humans were so important down here. In the arctic they were almost nothing but myth.

Every day, her pups were getting bigger and stronger. Their short words and simple sentences met with applause and appreciation. They had become rowdy and playful. It wasn't long before Kaira would be able to move them. Normally, after two months of seclusion, she would have moved them to a rendezvous site where they would have been introduce to the pack. Unfortunately, the pack they were born into was abolished and Kaira was uncertain of their future. She couldn't continue to raise them on her own, but would they be accepted into New Dawn? Would they even like New Dawn?

As Kaira ate, she glanced up at Tharin and wondered about him. He had been so helpful to her and she had never questioned his motives. He simply became a part of her life, a fact that seemed irreplaceable to the tiny family. The young mother knew that her puppies had accepted him, but would they accept the rest of his pack? Perhaps they already had? Tharin often came over smelling like New Dawn, although there were times when he left smelling strongly of Kiara, and she of him. They had never done anything intimate, just simply played and hunted together as if they were pack. There were times when Kiara watched his receding form and desperately wished that they were pack.

"I actually think it's really interesting to watch them change. The luperci of my mother's stories were mostly terrible creatures..." Kaira trailed off, the reality that she would soon join her ranks sinking in again. She had refrained from telling Tharin about Amy infecting her, although she had admitted that the dog attacked her with a knife again. Kiara pushed the memory out of her mind and continued to talk. "The luperci seem to have a strange obsession with humans and their ways. I heard that it's even worse beyond the sea."

out of character stuffs

Kiara had heard about luperci? That was better warning than Tharin had received. He'd just shown up, and with absolutely no warning met one in optime form. That had been enough to freak him out, the only two leggers he'd ever heard of being ones that were able to kill from a distance. Now he knew those had been humans, creatures that had thankfully not traveled to his home leaving it completely untouched from the diverse changes he'd seen them capable of in the south.

I didn't get any stories. My first experience with them was meeting one on two legs. Tharin chuckled, remembering his panic. She had been so much larger than him, the male not having a clue on how to deal with the new creature. He'd thought she'd killed and eaten the wolf he'd heard talking. He nodded his head at her words. I think I can understand it. Someone told me humans are the reason why luperci exist. Maybe they want to... Tharin trailed off, not quite able to word his thoughts.

WC: ?

Full and happy, the arctic female wanted to do nothing more than to drift into a relaxing nap. She settled down onto the soft grass and tucked one paw underneath her chest. The others she spread out to the side as she laid down on her side. Her fluffy tail thumped against the ground lazily before it settled down and became still. Kiara let one ear rotate as the other one was trained on Tharin. The giant male spoke of his complete surprise to the existence of luperci. Perhaps that was why he was having so much trouble. Kiara's pack had lived in the southern most recesses of the arctic where whispers of the shifters could be heard. The young mother could only imagine how much differently her encounter with the luperci could have gone if she too had been unaware of their existence.

"Become human?" She asked questioningly as she attempted to finish his statement. There had always been a sneaking suspicion in her mind that the luperci wanted in some ways to become human. The shifters idolized the human artifacts and lived in their houses with the doors that Kiara hated so much. Frankly, she couldn't see why any wolf would want to become human. They died after all, so mimicking a failed species was a ridiculous notion in her mind. On top of that, her father's stories of humans always made them seem evil and undesirable. They were like the monster of her childhood and the abandoned and run down buildings in her arctic home were like ghosts and marred the beautiful land.

"I don't think I will ever be able to understand the luperci ways. I can only imagine how Lucia and Kohaku will react to the shifters. I haven't told them about the luperci yet because I am afraid they are too young to understand." The alabaster wolf shook her head and looked towards her den. Although she could not see it, she knew it wasn't far off and inside her puppies were waiting for her to return.

Tharin remained sitting, alert to what was around them. He was fairly relaxed, but his guard remained up, watching for threats. It was peaceful for him, requiring no more effort to remain on guard than it did for him to be affectionate and dominant. His instincts told him the protective behavior was needed, so he followed along with it. Kiara's completion of his sentence sent a shiver through his body. Become human? He knew that not all luperci were like that. Some were quite sensible, such as Fayne and Zalen. He hated the idea of them being like the humans.

He nodded his head in agreement. Luperci, no matter how they acted, were strange, if only because of the forms. Adding in how they tended to act, and they became a full puzzle he couldn't understand, and didn't wish to. Glancing towards the den he nodded his head. Hopefully they'll be able to adjust to it better than us. They'll be growing up around them after all. Tharin hoped that they didn't catch the virus. He wasn't too clear on how it passed on, but fear ran through his body at the thought of the pups changing. He liked them how they were, even if he would still care for them if they did change.

A shiver rode down Tharin's back as Kiara stated a terrible truth. There were some luperci who idolized the humans and Kiara suspected that they wanted to be humans. It was an idea that horrified and sickened both of the uninfected wolves. The snowy female recognized that there were many shifters who didn't desire to become human, but they weren't all of the canines. Kiara's thoughts traveled briefly to Inferni as she remembered her dear friend Vesper. Vesper, who was once bound to a single form, never showed any interest in becoming human. Even in her two-legged form, she continued to be a true coywolf.

Both of the adults minds strayed towards the puppies. What would the future hold for Kohaku and Lucia? Would they desire to become luperci or reject the idea like Kiara and Tharin? Would they hate her for not giving birth to them as a luperci, or praise her for her determination to remain unshifted even if she had failed? "I'm sure they will. After all, they are like me and are fighters." The young mother's tone was half joking half serious.

At long last, Kaira stood. The need to be with her pups and protect them overshadowed her desire to rest and relax with Tharin. The subordinate wolf slowly rubbed her head under the larger male's chin and whined. When the parted Kaira dipped her head. "Until next time?"

Tharin stood as Kiara did, nodding his head at her words. I'll come again soon. Maybe he'll even manage to get something bigger for them. The problem was still dragging it over to the den, but he wouldn't give up. Kiara would be taken care of as long as he was around. Tail swishing he glanced once more towards the den before he turned. Nuzzling her once more he turned and trotted back towards New Dawn. He'd tell Zalen about his trip, just needing to share his time with Kiara and the pups with someone. Zalen's worry over them had made Tharin feel safe talking about them to him, often doing so when they were together. His pace was steady, the quick ground eating pace of a traveling wolf as he disappeared from sight.
