There were plenty of ways to get food. Granted, some were more safe and acceptable by nature, but Terra didn't just know those ways. She was a thief, a scavenger, and sometimes a hunter. With Skoll traveling with her, Terra had been doing a fair amount of hunting, even if the meals were always small. Scavenging was something she had shown to him, but hadn't pressed on beyond it was okay to scavenge when necessary, with no shame in it. That would have been more difficult for a wolf to accept, since they weren't instinctual scavengers like coyotes were.

It was the thieving part Terra was looking after now. She had found the smell of a dead moose, and had followed it quite happily. Bear had been mixed in the scent as well, but that was okay. She would just drive the bear off. Not too difficult, considering how dopey the bears tended to act. Granted, they were super grumpy, and tended to be rather watchful of those approaching, but that wouldn't stop her. Softly she signaled for Skoll to crouch down. Peering through the bushes she looked at the bear.

It was crouched over the moose, head buried into the stomach. Her own growled at the sight, Terra quickly ducking back in. Prancing over Terra stuck in her head again, smiling. The blood would confuse it's sense of smell. Bears had poor eyesight as well. Taking this one down would be even easier than she had thought.

Skoll is like, "Are you craaaazy?" Lemme know if scrolling tables are a problem too. :3

The subject of food was one of great interest to the boy, who grew more and more each day. He was happy to help his friend hunt where he could, although they never took on deer or elk like he wanted to. He knew that wasn’t how Terra operated, considering her species, and despite his size he was too wary to take a large herbivore down on his own. Even nibbling at carrion was fine, although he liked this lesson least of all; he was a prince, and a wolf, and wolf princes did not scavenge from another predator’s leavings.

Skoll almost rolled his eyes when the coywolf headed toward the scent of a not-so-fresh-moose, but the underlying stench made his hackles prickle with thrill. Green eyes widened as he crept slowly after his mentor. Would she really…? he wondered, and his jaw dropped when he hunkered in the bushes beside her.

She would, the squire thought, gazing at the bear with a mixture of excitement and terror. He’d heard plenty about the creatures, both from the anecdotes and warnings of the pack and the stories he read. But this beast hunkered over the moose carcass was no Baloo.

Skoll cursed his bright pelt as he crouched in the vegetation, staring worriedly at Terra as he wondered what, exactly, she was planning. His shoulders trembled then grew taut as he spurred on the change to secui, the better to deal with a giant creature like this. He knew the coyote hybrid had her tricks, but if this came to fight or flight, the superior form would lend him speed and strength. As his mass multiplied and his bones stretched to accommodate his weight, he continued to watch the she-yote with concern.

Mom would not be happy to hear about this.

OOC just removing kit from the thread, since such a long wait

Terra glanced over to Skoll, watching him change into the larger form. Making sure he didn't get hurt doing this was going to be the most difficult, and most important part. It was a good idea, but Terra stuck to lupine, needing the smaller faster form for this to work. Quietly she began to speak, making sure her isntructions were clear. Moose is only a few moments old. Still warm. See how his nose is buried? He won't smell us right away. Bears have poor eyesight as well, so quick movement can easily confuse and startle them. Make sure to keep quiet, or he'll hear us.

She considered briefly whether there was anything else she needed to tell him before moving on. I'm going to slip up to the bear and grab it's attention. Once that's done attack it from the flank. Don't hold on; this isn't a deer. Hit the bear and then back off. Fur is thick, so make sure you bite deep. I'll keep the bear's attention off you. If we keep striking it like that the bear will leave. Then the meal would be theirs. Stepping forwards Terra moved through the bush. Whining she made her presence clear, prancing up to the bear. Grunting it looked up, trying to take in the measure of the coyote prancing before him.

Playfully she bowed down, mocking the great predator. Growling a warning a giant paw swatted in Terra's direction. Leaping out of the way Terra darted into the short gap, grabbing a bite of the moose. The bear roared with anger, moving to strike against the tiny coyote and send her flying. Now would be a good time for Skoll to come in, Terra moving as fast as she could to get out of striking range.

When the cobra runs for her life, she goes like a whip-lash flicked across a horse's neck.

The coyote hybrid spoke to him, her voice low but her words confident. Hearing her, he could almost believe that nothing could go wrong with this endeavor. He inhaled deeply, glancing through the foliage to the bear snuffling in the carcass, and swiveled his ears forward as she began to lay out the plan. His eyes widened when she said that he would be the attacker; although it made sense with her fleet-footedness and his strength in this form, he was not an experienced fighter by any means. Romps with his siblings and lessons on fighting cats did not count.

But then the female was off, and Skoll watched with horror. Even if he didn’t want to fight, he knew he could not abandon his comrade. Driven by the need to protect his friend, the male stood and waited as Terra darted around the bear, taking nips from the moose and leaping away from the sluggish strikes of the neck-breaking paw.

The boy waited as long as he could stand then launched himself forward, moving fast but quiet. His ears pinned tightly against his skull, and his lips drew back to show his fangs. He sank his jaws into the bear’s hind leg, squeezing until his jaws hurt, and just as quickly released with a yelp of surprise as the predator swung around to strike him.

The coppery taste of blood and fear in his mouth, he dodged then ran out of range of the strike, breathing hard.

Rikki-tikki knew that he must catch her, or all the trouble would begin again.

The bear moved as expected, a cry of pain and anger erupting before it moved to strike where Skoll had been standing. Perfect! It wouldn't be able to keep up with both of them moving in like that. Terra leaped in at that moment, teeth tearing at the chest before she pushed herself back off. A paw caught the back of her body, sending her spinning before she regained her balance. Not too much, just a thin scratch. She wasn't even bleeding, though a chunk of her fur was now missing.

The bear's attention back on her the bear worked heavily on figuring out who was attacking it, nose quivering to draw in the scent. Her body froze stock still, disappearing from the bear's sight. No movement, no way to track her. The bear swung it's head back and forth, mind busily working to find the creature that had attacked him, unable to pick up her scent through the blood. As soon as the bear got close enough Terra bit it on the nose, rapidly backing up again.

When the cobra runs for her life, she goes like a whip-lash flicked across a horse's neck.

Word Count — 000 :: Bears actually have good/decent eyesight, but I went ahead and made this one funky so everything still works out. x3

As the young wolfdog stumbled and lurched out of the way, a tawny-red stream of fur flew toward the massive chest of the beast. Breath caught in the boy’s throat when he saw the hefty paw strike her, but she moved like liquid, spilling onto the forest floor unharmed. He was reminded of the grace of the vixen they’d come across earlier in the journey.

The bear swung its head and snuffled, and a pang struck Skoll as he realized there had to be something wrong with its eyesight. It blundered toward Terra, who nipped it; his own nose stung slightly as he was reminded of the bobcat slashing at him. However, the memory passed through quickly, and he jumped forward, digging his teeth into a hind leg and shaking ferociously before the bear whirled back toward him again, clouded eyes searching for his pale, moving form. While Terra’s pelt somewhat blended in with the trees around them, he was a stark cream-gold against the tree-shadows and forest floor.

Adrenaline pumped through his bloodstream, and exhilaration had replaced fear. Skoll barked obnoxiously at the bear, his dog heritage showing through, and dove in to grab a chunk of meat before running circles around the clearing where the moose carcass had fallen, waiting for the bear to give in.

Rikki-tikki knew that he must catch her, or all the trouble would begin again.

OOC really? i always thought they had bad eyesight

Terra yipped as Skoll dug into the bear's back leg. This wasn't something easy for them to take down. This was a creature that would fight them for every gain that they made. Terra moved in as the bear swung towards Skoll, adding her voice to the noise. The bear roared with anger, covering their voices before it fell silent again, struggling with what to do with the pair of determined canines. Skoll had lost his mind to the adrenaline, moving in and tearing a chunk out of the bear.

The bear followed after him, heavy paws swiping just a touch behind where he was. Terra leaped onto the bear's back, paws dancing for grip as she nipped at it's head before pushing off to the other side. Completely frustrated at this point the bear began to retreat, roaring it's anger but unable to stand up to the pair. Terra darted up again and again, continuing to drive it. She wouldn't be letting it back in.

When the cobra runs for her life, she goes like a whip-lash flicked across a horse's neck.

Apparently it's a really common myth, so I don't blame you, haha! Anyway, Skoll is a nut and we can end this soon. Big Grin

The bear was assaulted by a cacophony of doggish barks and ’yotish yaps, but its roar shook the trees and almost made the pale hybrid stumble. His tail, normally flagged high, had instinctually tucked underneath his white belly—one less target for the beast to tear off. He continued to bark obnoxiously, blood from the moose meat and the bear coloring his bottom jaw red. His bark increased in pitch to a strangled yelp as he felt the bear’s claws just inches from his rump, but he kept hauling ass in circles around the clearing like a madman. Out of the corner of an eye, he saw Terra gain purchase on the grizzly’s back, and he let out more yips of encouragement and excitement. Once terrified by the idea of attacking the monster, he was completely caught up in the moment now.

Eventually, the large animal swung away, not without a bellow of anger. Skoll took his place at his friend and teacher’s side as she darted back and forth at the creature to keep it moving, adding a few loud barks and growls of his own. When the creature disappeared through the foliage, he burst into sudden laughter then whirled, jumping at Terra in pure exhilaration, forgetting about the meat.

This was fun!

Rikki-tikki knew that he must catch her, or all the trouble would begin again.

The bear left, the kill secured. Tail swaying she turned around to claim the meal, startled by the sudden laughter at her side. Looking over at Skoll Terra burst out. His usual golden fur was assaulted by blood, staining it a bright red. Terra had blood on her body as well, but her fur was already red enough that one couldn't tell. She twisted away under the playful leap, bowing down happily. Yapping she moved forwards, butting gently against him before turning around and returning to the moose.

She nosed it for a moment before lifting her head, howling her claim. She grabbed a chunk, swallowing it down rapidly. This was why she had fought the bear. Her hunting skills might be poor, but when it came to stealing there were few to match her. No matter the risk Terra was willing to take it, and always got what she wanted in the end. Trotting over to Skoll she nuzzled him again. That's how you fight a bear. Move fast, strike often, and stay out of range. Hungry?
