A week of traveling with Skoll. Terra definitely felt more mature and responsible after that. Skoll hadn't gotten any life threatening injuries, she'd taught him a lot, and they had both been well fed. All in all, a very good job. Tail high Terra returned to the pack, promptly rolling on the ground happily. She wasn't far past the borders, but she loved the pack, and just wanted to make sure that she smelled like a member all over again, the scents of travel fading from her body.

Yapping happily she bounded playfully towards the caverns that the pack held. Over the valleys she plunged, entering into the hidden area. Playfully she squirmed through, simply happy to be home and without the responsibility of keeping another alive. It was a lot harder than she'd thought it would be, always having to check on him and not wander off and keep her mind focused. Now she could just do as she wished without a care.

Hello thar! =)

Sometimes life at home was quiet and pleasant, and Hati Catori was content to stay beside his mother and sister and help them with their daily routines, or lose himself in a good book. Other days, though, he chafed under his charismatic brother's boundless enthusiasm, and his father's stern presence made him too self-conscious to read. Today was closer to the latter, and the young wolfdog had slipped away like a silent shadow, padding away from the elegant house near the Chien Hotel and closer to the borders. He would spend the day in solitude, lost in his own thoughts. He debated about crossing into neutral territory and exploring there, but a twist of insecurity quickly changed his mind. He was not courageous enough to leave his homeland entirely, not yet.

So finding himself unwilling to go back home but unwilling to stray too far, Hati slowed his pace, wandering aimlessly towards the gentle grassy slopes he knew concealed a system of caverns. They were dark and tranquil, hidden away from the late spring sunshine, and a place he liked to frequent. Other members of the Court obviously knew of their existence, but he still liked to pretend it was his secret place. His plumed tail stilled as he caught wind of a scent nearby -- a female packmate, his brother's friend. Quietly the dark-furred male settled onto his hindquarters near the cavern entrance, waiting politely to see if she would emerge.

Terra had wandered through the maze happily, occasionally glancing up to find water dripping down onto her head. Shaking herself Terra yipped happily, letting her voice carry through the strange tunneled system that she was enjoying herself in. Terra rather enjoyed how hidden away it was, and even if others knew of it Terra felt that only someone who thought like her could truly enjoy it's riches, the secret nooks and crannies to run through, places to hide, places to store things that one didn't want to lose. Terra hadn't used it for that last purpose, as she had it all in her own room.

The scent of Skoll's brother reached Terra, and the coyote immediately turned her head. Hati! Caller of the moon. She'd met him when she had been howling her sorrow to the moon when she'd come back from being so badly wounded in her heart. There was a scar there now, forgotten about most of the time. Terra bounded forwards, knowing that he was a quieter one. Pressed low to the ground Terra chuckled, twisting her body around until the dark youngster came into view. As soon as he did Terra shot forward, ready to tackle and pin him to the ground.

Through the cavern's gloom, he saw a shadow flicker -- she was close. In a flash, her pointed coyote face was visible, as she immediately launched herself directly at him! Hati caught his breath with a hiss, feeling a flutter of panic for a split-second -- was she attacking him? But it was obvious she was just playing, as her tackle sent him tumbling onto his back in the grass, emitting a small grunt of surprise. "Terra," he wheezed in greeting, her lean weight pinning him down successfully. He could have struggled free -- he wasn't a little puppy anymore, and he probably weighed more than his skinny packmate -- but he didn't want to encourage her mischievous roughhousing. He was finding more that his reserved nature meant he didn't enjoy physical play as much as when he was younger. He wasn't as strong as his brother, anyway, and that was the only packmate he wanted to win against.

"How was your trip with Skoll?" he asked as politely as he could muster while catching his breath, already knowing Skoll had the time of his life. His brother was bursting at the seams with enthusiasm, trying to tell him and Lottie all about his (rather exaggerated) escapades outside the Court. It was one of the reasons Hati had slipped out of the house today. He didn't have the same adventurous spirit that Skoll and Terra seemed to share. It wasn't any surprise she spent a lot more time with his golden brother.

The pup easily tumbled beneath her, despite his larger size. Tail wagging Terra licked at his face playfully, enthusiastic about his presence. The wheezed breath hinted that he might not be so happy to join in her play, the movement to remain submissive confirming that. Deciding to pretend that she hadn't been expecting anything more Terra stepped off him. Sitting down Terra curled her tail around her with all the dignity her mixed nature allowed her, managing to look almost wise, if one to discard such wisdom in the face of things that appeared to be more fun.

Asked about the trip Terra dipped her head. It had been interesting, if slower paced than she would have liked. Well, he was a pup, and much had to be taught to him after all. She'd had fun sharing what she knew. Maybe that counted for something. It was interesting. Terra couldn't really think of another word to describe it. Having Skoll meet Kit when she went after a bear wasn't exactly what she had expected to have happen. The bear, yes. Skoll meeting Kit, no. How are you moon chaser?

Terra was playfully licking his face, something that embarrassed him, though he would never tell her so directly. As she drew away, he offered her a small lick on the cheek, a quick and guilty apology for letting her down. He picked himself up from the grass, neatly arranging his light and dark paws into a seated position in front of her, listening intently to her speak.

"Interesting" was the only information he was offered about the journey, which was both a disappointment and a bit of a relief. Hati had still never crossed the borders of his birthplace -- the thought of the unknown made him uncomfortable and anxious, preferring to stay close to home. In part, this was because he grew up during the Aniwaya conflict. He had been warned many times as a puppy that it was dangerous out there, that bad wolves might try to hurt him if he strayed away. His uncle Zafier had been killed during that time, though he did not remember much about his mother's brother. And yet, it could not be the only thing holding him back, because Skoll and Lottie did not have the same inhibitions he did. Skoll in particular relished the adventurous side of life, and Hati had not been oblivious to the cajoling and begging he had done to convince their mother to embark on this trip with Terra. Hati could have easily asked to go along, or tried to arrange another chaperoned trip, but the desire did not exist within him. It always took him a little longer than most to get there. He was curious about the customs and cultures of other packs, but not enough to seek them out by himself.

"I'm doing well, story-teller," he replied with a gentle smile, referring to her co-rank as well as her reputation for being a bit of a trickster. Despite her young age, Terra was a much higher ranking pack member than Hati. Manners and appearances were very important to him, so his naturally submissive nature made him want to defer to her authority. He found it difficult to see her as a buddy the way Skoll did, even knowing she was a good friend of his family. "I trust you aren't too hungry from your travel? Mother is always happy to feed you, she enjoys cooking for others." His pale unblinking gaze held her sharp green stare, always searching for cues to make sure he was responding correctly.

Keeping secrets was a habit ingrained into her. One that she was trying to pass on to Skoll, if with much lesser success than she would like. He was a great kid, if too honest for his own good. One day he'd open his mouth and talk to the wrong person. A soft lick from Hati was accepted gracefully, her tail swaying behind her. He might not be very playful, but Terra did enjoy his company. It was restful, something Terra needed at times with her habit of stirring up chaos wherever she went. With Hati being a rather solid presence it kept her more calm and anchored than she'd normally be, especially as he wasn't one to be caught easily in her games.

She laughed easily at his words, tail swaying at the title. It was true she was a story teller, always ready to capture one in a tale of marvel. It was her other talents that held her more captivated, such as her mocking way of reading the future and the various other tricks she held. Asked if she was hungry Terra cocked her head, considering the question. Food was always welcome in her mind. Especially from the alpha's family. Somehow, without much effort on her part, Terra had become part of it, regularly going in and out of their lives. Not right now, though I'll probably drop in for supper. It was sure to be something tasty with Ayita cooking. If Skoll hadn't told about when Terra put him in danger.

Lying down she blinked her eyes, gaze falling to the cavern behind her. A whole network of secrets. Giant rabbits at work. She grinned mockingly, knowing it wasn't really true, remembering a time when Rabbit and Coyote had been forced to work together.

"I'll let Mother know to save a seat for you," Hati replied amiably, making a mental note to do so. Their household was always well stocked with food, and Ayita enjoyed sharing her culinary talents. She would be happy to have a guest -- and was probably planning a big feast anyway, to welcome Skoll home safe and sound. While it had been a pleasant reprieve to have the house so quiet for the last several days, Hati had missed his brother's company from time to time. Dinner would be a noisy and happy affair tonight, and Terra would surely enjoy spinning tales about their great adventure.

Terra settled onto the grass, and Hati took his cue and followed suit, lowering his belly onto the grass and crossing his forelegs before him. She mentioned rabbits, and he tilted his head with curiosity, trying to puzzle out whether she meant what she said or if she was teasing him. Hati wasn't always adept at telling the difference between fact and fiction, and relied on what he learned from books more than experience. Finally he frowned at her mocking grin, figuring it must be a joke he didn't get. "Rabbits don't get that big... Do they?" He wasn't entirely sure what had made the caverns, after all, and he knew rabbits lived in burrows underground...

Her tail wagged behind her at Hati's soft words. His word was something she could easily count on. He seemed so serious, probably from everything Ayita had imparted to him. Whenever she was with Ayita Terra always ended up learning one thing or another. Except for when she was injured. Then the most she learned was not to accept strange herbs and the like, as they tended to make her feel really odd, separated from herself. Terra hadn't liked that very much at all.

Terra glanced over, bemusement on her face at his words. Not anymore. Laughing she looked at the tunnels again. They were too big to survive. Everything was eating them, taking them down with ease. Rabbit came to Coyote, begging for her help. He said Coyote owed him, since she was the reason why he was like that in the first place. Coyote was in a spot of trouble as well, so Rabbit made a place for them to hide while she made something to shrink Rabbit, make it easier for him to escape.

Terra launched into her story, and Hati felt himself relaxing, listening to her natural talent at weaving tales. Now he knew it was fiction, and could enjoy it as such. She spoke of each animal as an individual entity, representatives of their species that could somehow influence their size and shape and therefore protect their race more efficiently. It would be interesting if that were true, and they could trade favors with other species to change what they looked like. Hati liked being a wolfdog, though, so he probably wouldn't change anything about his looks -- if he could be smarter, stronger, or cooler, those would be far more tempting options for the self-conscious youth. "So Coyote made Rabbit smaller? But... it didn't really help, we still eat rabbits all the time," he added seriously. "If they were big enough to dig these tunnels, we wouldn't have to eat very many at all to be full... Did Coyote realize that?" He offered her a sheepish smile, not meaning to interrupt her story with his logic. He liked her playful energy, even if he could not match it; her presence was uplifting. Hati was often lost in his thoughts, a true introvert, and friendly encounters like this were rare for him, something he appreciated. He hoped Terra felt the same about his company, though he could not tell if she was simply humoring him because he was Skoll's brother.

Terra nodded her head, tail swaying behind her as he spoke. Coyote was amazing, making all kinds of things that could alter life. She had brought rain, after all. Twisting her head Terra thought about Hati's question. She hadn't really thought much about it. It was true they still ate rabbit, but shrinking had helped solve problems. It made Rabbit swifter than before, without the lumbering shape he had held.

Bewildered by his question Terra cocked her head. She must have. She's Coyote, after all. Most of the time she hunts Rabbit as well. Bear had partnered up with Cougar though, so she had to hide. Maybe she thought it was a simple enough request to grant, and just did it? Terra wasn't so sure. She knew that Coyote had shrunk Rabbit, but how it had made it more dangerous for rabbits had been missed.

Hati watched Terra intently, pale eyes unblinking as he listened to her. She seemed perplexed by his question, tilting her head at a quizzical angle. It made him feel a little guilty for ruining the story -- he should not have voiced his logic after all, it had no place in fiction. He shuffled his paws against the grass, hoping the flippant coyote female would not be bothered. She offered him an answer, one he accepted with a quick nod. "That makes sense," he agreed, hoping it would put the tale back on track. "And why were Bear and Cougar partners? You said Coyote was in trouble, right?"

His plumed tail thumped lightly against the ground, awaiting the next snippet of Terra's legend. Was there a Wolf or a Dog in her story? He wasn't a coyote, nor did he know much about them, other than their yipping voices. The kingdom had been founded by dogs and wolves, and that was still the bulk of their population. Even Alder the stablemaster was supposed to have coyote heritage, but he was so huge and tall he just looked like a golden wolf to Hati. "Was... there a Wolf back then, or just Coyote?" he asked meekly, wondering if she knew the answer to that as well. His inquisitive mind always wanted to know more, even if he did not always voice the questions. Terra seemed to know so much about everything from all her traveling, though, she was a good one to ask.

Terra nodded her head, eyes gleaming. Coyote was in rather large trouble. Bear had been chasing her for a long time. She lost her tail to Coyote. Coyote had found it amusing that such a thick creature had such a long tail, and bit it off in a joke. Cougar was angry at Coyote as well, as Coyote had tricked Cougar into chasing mice away from the honey Coyote had found. They found they had a common enemy, but with Coyote's nature capturing her was rather difficult. They had to work together to do it. Both of them went to all of Coyote's usual playing grounds, making sure she couldn't go there to hide. When Coyote met Rabbit, she had to hide.

Tail wagging Terra considered the story. Wolf was there from the beginning. Wolf and Coyote were friends, until Coyote tricked Wolf. They didn't get along as well after that. Occasionally they are friends, but usually Coyote causes trouble for Wolf, so he avoids her. He'll chase her as well, if Coyote is particularly determined to get in Wolf's way. Her tail beat the ground behind her, thinking about Wolf's friendship with Coyote. They were a rather odd pair.

"So... Coyote causes trouble for everyone..." Hati murmured, disquieted. Why did Terra speak so lovingly of the deity, when it seemed like her stories inevitably ended in grief for others? In his naive mind, rules were never to be broken, the law was set in stone and must always be upheld. He felt pity for the Bear, a victim of cruel jest -- perhaps because he could empathize with one who did not understand what the joke was. At least Coyote helped Rabbit, although that seemed rather self-serving since she only needed a place to hide. It was becoming harder to see her as the dashing hero of the tale, because she was sounding more like a villain.

"Doesn't Coyote want to be friends with Wolf and the others? Why can't she be nicer, instead of playing pranks on everyone? Does she have any friends...?" He asked with a frown, feeling saddened by this fictional world of animals changing shapes to inflict damage on each other. He had to remind himself again that it was all made up, these were not real creatures that deserved his pity. Folk tales were often allegorical, a definition he had learned from reading some of the dry nonfiction literature left towards the back of his family's library. What was the lesson of these stories, "don't get caught"? He huffed, sticking his nose between his white paws as he tried to fathom it out. "I mean, does Coyote do anything nice for the other animals?"

Terra hesitated, wondering how to answer Hati's words. It was true, Coyote did cause trouble for everyone that came near her. It wasn't necessarily out of a want for harming them. Sometimes she was just playing around, and someone was drawn into her game. Sometimes she harmed others to help those she considered her friends. Those stories were less often, as tales where the animals worked together were few. Usually it was when they benefited from each other in some way, and not over friendship that such a thing happened.

She does have friends. She's a trickster though. Coyote always plays games. It's like when I play with Skoll. I love playing with him, but that doesn't mean I won't trick him into looking rather silly. Thoughtfully Terra considered Hati's words, trying to think of a tale where Coyote helped someone, instead of simply tricking others or doing something for her own benefit. One tale did come to mind, but it was a rather sad one.

Sitting down Terra looked at Hati. Coyote isn't the only one to not get along with the other animals. Often they fight amongst each other. Deer flees from Wolf, and Bear, and Cougar. Cougar and Bear will fight over territory. Hawk mocks Rabbit, and will kill him. Coyote won't interfere every time her friends are in trouble. It happens too often. When she does interfere, it means something has gone very, very wrong.

This happened once. Fox plays tricks on the other animals as well to help herself survive. Occasionally she's partnered with Coyote to play a prank. Fox went too far this time though, and angered Sun. He came down from the sky, and locked Fox away. He decided that Fox had done too much damage, and was going to destroy her. He hunted across the earth, finding her kits and killing them one by one.

Coyote heard of this, and immediately grew fearful for her friend. All the foxes were connected to Fox. Without her, they wouldn't exist anymore. Stopping Sun wouldn't be easy though. He was very powerful, and very wise. Coyote called Raven and Wolf to help her. This trick wouldn't be easy to pull off. Coyote covered herself in ash, turning herself black. She disguised herself with thick leaves over her ears, and used mud to make her tail look thin and bony. Wolf disguised himself as well, turning himself into a creature that lived in the sky, while Raven turned himself as colorful as a song bird.

Sun was walking through a field at this point. It burned behind him, hunting down the kit he was convinced was hidden there. That was when Wolf, disguised as a great sky creature, stepped forward. He was very rushed, the majestic wisdom clear in his eyes. Sun was surprised to see him there. "Great Sky Creature, why are you here?" Wolf looked over to Sun, pretending to be surprised. "Didn't you know? A new sun is being chosen, and everyone is gathering for the ceremony." Not pausing to wait Wolf continued on his way.

This confused Sun very much. As far as he knew, he was the only one. Deciding that it was a lie Sun continued on his way. They couldn't replace him. Not long after Raven appeared, bright colors catching the light. He did his best to sing, but Raven has a terrible voice. Startled Sun spoke out. "Song Bird, why is your voice so rough?" Raven looked to Sun, preening carefully. "A new sun is chosen, and my voice has been lost crying praises of the sun's great beauty."

This worried Sun very much. He hurried back to his home, determined to find out the truth. Outside it he found Coyote, disguised as a very strange creature, placing things to the side to carry with her. She didn't look up, appearing satisfied with the outcome. "Wait!" Sun cried. "Do you know about the new sun?" Coyote looked up, smiling. "Why yes. We had to choose a new one. The old sun was too busy wandering all over the place, you know. This new one knows her duties very well though." Sun frowned. "Who is it?" "Why it's Fox. She was very agreeable about it."

Sun rushed into the house, and sure enough, there was Fox. She was where he'd left him, sitting in the house with a chain around her neck to keep her from escaping. "Why are you the new sun?" Fox sat up, tail swaying behind her. "Well, sitting up here I've been able to see what you do. As you weren't available, I said that I could do your work for you. The collar you made for me is very useful for that." Jealous Sun turned to Fox. "Let me be the sun again."

Now Fox wanted to get out from where she was very badly. She knew that moving too soon could ruin what Coyote had done though. Shaking her head she looked to the window. "I don't think so. You haven't left much for me down there, and I know how to work as the sun now." Hearing this Sun cried, tearing at his fur. "I can restore things! I'll even help you hide when you need to! Just let me be the sun again!"

Fox nodded reluctantly. "Alright. Don't forget to wear the collar." Relieved Sun set Fox free. The tricky female slipped out, returning to Coyote. Sun chained himself down, and found himself unable to leave his home. He was the sun as he wished, but he wasn't able to walk the earth anymore. Sun was very upset by this, but he couldn't change it now. Fox's fur changed from the meeting though. The heat was so intense, it singed her fur red. And it took Coyote many, many days before her coat lost it's dusty color.

Hati tilted his head, considering her words. That was true, Terra and Skoll were good friends regardless if they made fools out of each other. Terra seemed to take such delight in playing her tricks, being the catalyst of chaos in their otherwise routine lives. Entropy was not such a bad thing, though it went against Hati's nature, as he liked everything proper and orderly and according to the rules. He felt so dry and boring in comparison to Terra, so it was good that she was here to mix things up for him. "You're right," he admitted, nose tip peeking up from his paws. "Games are supposed to be fun, after all..." Maybe the mythological Coyote was not so cruel after all, but her pranks did seem rather drastic; Hati would not be amused if Terra ever bit off his tail like the Bear had endured. He was proud of his plumed tail, his handsomest feature.

He listened intently as the next story was launched, pale eyes studying every movement and expression of Terra's face. She spoke of how all the animals clashed from time to time, as was nature; predator hunting prey, or territory disputes between hunters, these happened every day in real life. But then, in hushed awe, Hati absorbed her account of the Sun -- a higher power meting out gruesome punishment, wiping out an entire species thanks to the actions of their one representative. It was reprehensible; hunters only claimed what they needed, and war was only fought until the dispute was settled. To Hati's naive young mind, genocide was unfathomably evil.

He found himself holding his breath, riveted to the folk tale and all its twists and turns. Coyote enlisted the aid of Wolf and Raven, all to save the imperiled Fox. Their grand deception was ultimately successful, chaining the Sun in his palace so that he could never threaten them in such a way again. Once Terra finished, the wolfdog exhaled the breath he was holding, eyes bright with a fascinated admiration. She was a wonderful storyteller. "So Coyote saved all the foxes, that's wonderful! She can be good if others are more cruel than she is..." His innate curiosity led him to the inevitable, and he wagged his tail pleasantly as he studied her. "If the Sun had to be chained up, does that mean the Moon was too? And... Skoll is supposed to chase the sun and I chase the moon, right? Our namesakes... are they in these stories too?" He was unsure if they were the same fantasy realm, since he had not been able to find mention of Skoll and Hati in the books his parents owned. Terra knew so much about stories, though... did she know?

Her tail wagged behind her as the story unfolded, the emotions of the tale playing out across her features. It was dramatic, all the emotion she could muster launched into it. As always, Terra viewed herself as Coyote in the tale. She knew she wasn't as good a trickster as Coyote was, but she loved imagining herself as the clever hero in these tales. Hati's features were clear to read, swept up in the story as she spoke. As it finally wound down a deep breath was released. Terra's features were more relaxed, calm as it ended. This was how the world was.

Cocking her head to the side Terra considered his questions. There was always so much! Coyote is never cruel. At least, not intentionally. She doesn't want to hurt others. She just wants to enjoy herself. That was all there was to it. It was the same if Terra did something cruel. She hadn't meant to be so, she just hadn't realized it could be cruel. The moon isn't chained up. She goes out at times, it's why she changes shape. Different forms for the different places she visits when she goes out in the day. Asked about the sun and moon chasers, Terra considered carefully. There is a tale about those who entered the sky to chase them. The details were fuzzy on it, as it hadn't been a great trick that had captured Terra's mind when she'd been told it.

If intentions were not cruel but the actions were perceived as such by others, what did that make them? Pups were inherently egocentric, only seeing what pertained to them and no one else around them. Their world was small. But as they grew into adulthood, they become aware of the feelings of others and morality widens into shades of grey where it was once just black and white. Hati Catori was on the cusp of manhood, his intelligent mind trying to weigh in on such issues and finding there was no easy answer anymore. If someone played a cruel prank on him and hurt him, he would say without hesitation that they were mean for having done so. But if they hadn't meant it to be mean, only funny...? He frowned. That did complicate things. Terra seemed to believe steadfastly that Coyote was an innocent and playful entity, with no ill intentions other than some fun. Maybe that meant Coyote was young, because she did not see how she could hurt others, just like children. "...Does Coyote ever say she's sorry?" he asked quietly, wondering if she felt remorse.

Terra did her best to answer his endless queries, noting that the Moon character still traveled freely and changed shape. Hati smiled at this; he liked the moon, of course, night was his realm. In these stories, Moon must be nicer than Sun, and he appreciated that. "So who was chasing them? And why did they want to catch them?" His tail thumped pleasantly against the grass, awaiting the next chapter in her saga. She never seemed to tire of sharing the tall tales, and Hati's studious mind never tired of absorbing new information. Maybe someday he could repeat these tales to someone else, and they could decide if Coyote was a heroine or a villainess.

Terra nodded her head, completely missing what the question entailed. Plenty of times. It's a useful tool, being able to act submissive and slipping beneath what others expect. They don't see a fight if one doesn't act like a fighter." She herself had never felt remorse, though it wasn't because she hadn't done things she should feel sorry over. Terra just lacked the compass that told others what was right and what was wrong. There was no black and white, just things that she liked and things that she didn't like.

She frowned a little, concentrating on the old story. It hadn't stuck very well for her. There was a wolf who fell in love with the sun. He wished to always be with it, so he chases after it. The sun doesn't love him though, so it moves away from him, giving us the sun flickering through the day. The moon is being chased for a different reason though. Once the moon decided she didn't want to come out. The coyotes howled and howled for her, but she refused to come out. Not even the wolves saw the moon. So they selected someone, and he frightened the moon. To keep her from ever disappearing again he watches over her, and guards her.
