Spring
Just out of reach

Dawn broke through the night and spilled new light into the Den. Sapphire eyes cracked open, sleeplessness making them heavy and woozy. It had been almost a week since Kiara had lost her precious son and moved her two-month-old daughter out of desperation to New Dawn. The white female turned to look at Lucia who slept nestled into her mother's fur. The pup's red back rose and fell delicately as she breathed. Lucia, unlike her mother, had been able to sleep peacefully through the night. Tucked underneath the tiny female's exposed paw was her rag doll.

The past week had been hard for the young pup. After loosing her brother, she had been forced to walk many miles on the old highway until they reached the boarder of the pack lands. There she had been introduced to luperci for the first time. It had been a strange and frightening affair for the tiny puppy, and one she had taken in stride. Kiara gently licked her daughter's head, noticing that Lucia smelled strongly of her new pack, and stood with a great yawn. Kiara looked around the main den where the many wolves of New Dawn slept. With a hunter's grace, she exited the underground chasm and emerged into the bright morning light where the air smelled less of female's in heat.

The morning was cool and refreshing, spring had yet to let go of it's grasp on the world. The mother's blue eyes took in the light with little trouble as she moved silently through the foothills. The white female didn't travel far from the den for fear of anything happening to Lucia. It was an old habit that refused to disappear despite the fact that the wolves of New Dawn were very good around her. There were even two older puppies for her to play with. Even so, Kiara couldn't let go of her paranoid fear for loosing Lucia like she lost Anna and Kohaku. The scarred female stared out across the pack territory, wondering if she would ever see her son again.

Kiara stopped her morning hike not even a quarter mile away from the Den. There, she spotted a patch of recently disturbed dirt. After their arrival at New Dawn, Kiara had buried her only belongings. They were of little use in the "feral" pack and were safe from any harm due to the deer fur that had been carefully wrapped around them. Feeling nostalgic for some reason, the arctic female sat down next to the upturned earth and let her mind wander through her memories.

Word Count :: 347 OOC: Jiva is in lupus :3

Jiva was sad, angry, and unsure all at once. Palaydrian had been attacked and he wanted to go after the man that did it, but he was weak and he knew it. He wanted to do something to show Drin that he cared for her and he hated that she had been treated this way but how? He had been up early and was scouting the borders, a job he took even more seriously now, though he was weak he was protective of his pack, his family, friends, and anything that was deemed a part of New Dawn.

He was headed on his way back when a new smell came, it was a wolf and a new member. She had the scent of one that just came but was here for a while now. Taking his chance to get to know a wolf he hadn’t met before he trotted to look at this new member. There was something off on her smell that he was so use to in his time in this world. He had never met a wolf who was non luperci so he couldnt’ pin his paw on it.

When the white wolf came into his view he made himself perk up and his tail curled up agianst his back. He looked far more like his husky anscestry that it was a wonder he was mostly wolf. He trotted to the woman and started sniffing at her as a custom to those new in the pack it was his way of quietly getting to know her. He said nothing though until his quiet investigation was over with and he moved back to give her a sad smile.

“You are new here, my name is Jiva Takekuro. Welcome to New Dawn.”

He said rather formally than his normal puppyish self. He was just a little over a year old so he had tended to play more than he acted like an adult, but he was far gone from that at the moment due to the attack on Paladrian.

Tharin hadn't been far from where Kiara had been sleeping. With the female now in the pack the burden of protecting them had loosened. He wasn't being pulled away from her side by pack responsibilities either, letting him rest deeper and more at peace than before. His world was complete, everything he could have wanted right there. His pack was around him, there was no need to worry, and the alphess was in heat. More pups would be coming. His ears twitched a little in his sleep as Kiara left, but the large wolf didn't stir, still deep in his rest. He had nothing in particular that he needed to go after.

It was a short time later that he actually woke up. Yawning he stretched out, glancing over to where Kiara and Lucia slept. The tiny pup was curled in there alone, still asleep, but her mother was missing. Frowning he lifted his head, looking around for where she had gotten to. Her scent was still fairly close by, the sleepy wolf shaking his body. Lumbering up he followed after her, pausing at the river to take a cool drink. Refreshed he made the rest of his way over. His tail wagged as Kiara came into view, looking over at the pack brother. Hello Jiva. He didn't know him well, but had learned his name in passing among the members. Affectionately he stopped by Kiara, nuzzling at her neck.

Spring
Just out of reach

The arctic female sat alone, lost in her memories for only a few minutes. Kiara couldn't say that she enjoyed or disliked the experience. She had a multitude of painful and joyous memories that swarmed through her mind. Some were from her puppy hood, while other was of the birth of her own puppies. Kiara went through her most traumatizing experiences with Amy and the tiny little cuts on her maw she once received from a bramble bush. The faces of those she had known and lost floated past her vision; as well as those who she hadn't seen for a long time, but were alive and well.

The scent of another wolf grew stronger and the young mother was pulled out of her daydreams. Kiara turned her head to see a red, dog-like male approach her with a high curled tail. He approached her with a friendly air and Kiara gave the male a winning smile. Her ears flicked back and her tail began to wag. The male promptly began to sniff the snowy female who leaned over to take a quick sniff of him as well. Once the quiet greetings were over, the red wolf-dog stepped back and introduced himself. "Yes, thank you. I arrived not to long ago with my puppy. I'm Kiara Amarok."

Just as she had finished introducing herself, a familiar figure lumbered towards them. Kiara's smile grew bigger and she stood with a low wagging tail. Tharin, who was normally dominant over her, was now an equal and it felt a little weird. Even so, their friendship was still strong. While Tharin affectionately nuzzled her neck, Kiara licked his ears and whined happily. "Morning Tharin."

Word Count :: 253 OOC: Haha sorry about it being quick, Jiva's out, and quite sullen about it just cause of the nuzzle I hope I didn't ruin the thread you can hit me a few times if I did Sad

It was always a pleasure to meet new people and Kiara was no different. She gave him all the same courtesies that he gave her and he was happy to find a new member and meet her too. They were growing into a fine pack, though he still couldn’t get what ws so different about the woman. She looked absolutely normal and he could smell the pup on her but he smelled pups on many women before so it wssn’t that. He would figure out. He was about to start up a conversation when Tharin came into view and broke the duo. Jiva felt nervous around the man that he hadn’t met. He knew his name in passing just as the other one had and he nodded his head. What got him was the affection that the woman and male showed and his heart burned for Palaydrian. She was in no condition for too much affection though Jiva gave her what he could, but he couldn’t be around the two if they were going to go on. He cleared his throat.

“Ah, I am sorry for the short visit, I’ve other things to do. Please excuse me. It was very nice meeting you Kiara.... Tharin.”

The young man moved away and hurried back towards the cave feeling stupid for having stopped and feelign utterly intimidated by the taller man that seemed to know Kiara already. He quite possibly made a fool of himself just by his few words.

His tail arched high behind him, wagging cheerfully as Kiara licked his ears, the usual affectionate greeting. Her words were bright and spirited, Tharin turning to look over the mixed male. He knew about dogs, having been told about them, but the variation in them still intrigued him, seeing the bright colors and the different forms their bodies took. The curled tail was intriguing, as it looked almost challenging to Tharin, despite knowing it was just part of how dogs functioned.

His ears pricked as Jiva dismissed himself. He was truly that busy? Tharin looked down at Ariel, wondering what could have made him do that. Tharin kept himself quite busy usually, hunting, patrolling, and practicing fighting so he could help protect his pack, but that didn't mean he was so busy he couldn't spend time with pack mates. He whined softly, wondering if Kiara knew what was so important he left like that.

Just out of reach

Excitement and joy filled the arctic female's breast as Tharin approached her. To her, Tharin was an irreplaceable friend and one that she always enjoyed seeing. It would be a while before she could get used to having him around so often. She was used to only seeing him once or twice a week and being around her friend so often was a dream come true. Even more wonderful was the fact that she was finally part of his pack. They had always acted as if they were pack members, but it felt better to actually become official pack mates. Kiara had grown attached to the silver male and so had her daughter.

Confusion spread over the two uninfected wolves as Jiva made a quick escape from their meeting. He talked about some unknown pressing matter, leaving both Kiara and Tharin thoroughly confused. The two wolves looked at each other, neither quite sure how to take the sudden change. Sapphire orbs turned back towards Jiva and she said politely, "Alright, it was nice meeting you Jiva." A soft whine emerged from Tharin, his worry and confusion voiced. The young mother just shook her head, not quite sure what to think herself and watched briefly as the red male's form retreated.

Kiara turned her head, observing her new home and taking in all of the sights, scents, and sounds. New Dawn was beautiful and Kiara finally had some time to herself. With a whole pack behind her to help take care of Lucia, she could relax a little and enjoy some time off. "This place is beautiful. If only I had come here sooner." She hadn't meant to voice her thoughts, they simply came out. Kiara turned and looked at Tharin apologetically. Even if he hadn't spent any quality time with Kohaku, she knew that the puppy's disappearance pained him.

It looked like Kiara, despite being more used to the strange behaviors the wolves in the area exhibited, didn't understand his actions either. Pushing it away he settled down, letting the morning's light bathe over the pack. Taking in a deep breath he smelled the various plants through the area, slightly damp with dew. His ears twitched, listening to the chatter of birds, smelling mice that were probably across the stream a short walk off. It was good to just sit and take things in, not feeling pressured to talk or do things to fill the time, content with simply being near her.

He turned his head to Kiara as she spoke, tail wagging softly at her words. Yes, New Dawn was a good place to be. It stilled at the last words, eyes sorrowful at the mention. Maybe if he'd spent more time with the family, marked the borders stronger. Kohaku would have still wandered though, off to meet one of the fates pups tended to fall victim to. Pushing against her he shared the sorrow quietly, letting the pain ease. You're here now. Part of the pack. That was what mattered.

Sorrow, it was an emotion the arctic female couldn't previously afford. When all of her friends had left Ichika to go find new homes, she had been forced to ignore the pain in her heart so that she could take care of her young pups. When Anna had succumbed to weakness and died suddenly, Kiara had to ignore her grief so that all of her energy went into taking care of her remaining puppies. When news of Shiloh's passing and Sarian's disappearance had reached her Kiara had pushed been forced to ignore her feelings so that she could concentrate on delivering her puppies. Yet, the loss of her only son had a more devastating blow then all of them, or perhaps it was all of her repressed feelings catching up to her. Either way, Kiara couldn't ignore her pain any longer.

The young mother leaned into Tharin, drinking in his words and using him as a support for her both mentally and physically. She drank in his sentiment and shared his sorrow, although hers was a little more profound. With Lucia safe and sound asleep, Kiara didn't need to be strong. She sad quietly, her smaller frame feeling incredibly breakable and tiny compared to Tharin. Without knowing it, he had become her rock. He was her secure line to the world, as much as Lucia was and Kohaku had been. Fortunatly unlike the puppies, Kiara didn't need to be strong for the silver male.

Kiara didn't cry or howl, she just wordlessly let the world soak up her sorrow and allowed her wounds to heal. After a long silence, words returned to the arctic female's lips. "My pack."

Kiara leaned into him, his body taking the full weight of her slim form. She was so small compared to him. Usually the difference went unnoticed, both too occupied with their games and activities to really note their differences. She was always so big in his mind, powerful and spirited. Like nothing could get her down. Her true size though, so small and delicate, weighed on him now. All he could do was stand there, and hope that he was enough to protect her, and care for her. The pack would willingly help, but he still felt the need to stand strong, wrapped around her.

Sorrow filled the air, simply shared and felt by everything around them, before being washed away again. They were silent, resting together before Kiara's words broke it, the pain fading away. It would still hurt, but the razor sharp edge of the sorrow wouldn't remain any longer. Yes, your pack. My pack. Our pack. He leaned down, licking at her face softly, letting the joy of the pack replace the sorrow that had been, tail beginning to raid. He stepped back, indicating for her to follow. There was enough time for a run before Lucia woke up. They could see the territory together, reclaiming it for the pack.

Time was the healer of all things, and just as her physical wounds had healed, so too would her mental scars. Although Kiara doubted she would ever forget her failure with her first son, the young mother knew that it wouldn't belong before the harsh brand faded into a dull ache. Even as the pair of wolves sat in perfect silence, the pain in the young mother's heart gradually decreased. It wasn't healed, but Kiara's heart didn't hurt as much. Sapphire eyes quickly darted up to look at the male whom supported her. His words made her smile. At last, they were pack. The dream that Kiara and Tharin had shared for a month had come true.

A soft tongue ran gently across her forehead and Kiara whined happily. Suddenly Tharin stood and the arctic female had to quickly right herself. Kiara's large head cocked to the side in curiosity as she noted the instantaneous change in his demeanor. The silver male's tail wagging high and his amber eyes sparkled in the morning light. Tharin stepped back, his head cocking to the side telling her to follow. Intrigued, the young mother stood, her fluffy tail wagging slowly behind her.

With the lighthearted mood retuning, the two wolves returned to their normal adventures. Running and games. Unlike before, it was Tharin who claimed the advantage. Kiara was still new to the pack and knew little about the lay of the land. As per usual, the snow wolf allowed Tharin to take the lead. Even though they were technically the same rank, old habits die hard.

He dipped down playfully, nudging her again before he broke into a run. They couldn't go too far, mindful of when the small pup would wake up, but they could take a good run at least. Kiara's slim form would easily keep up with his loping pace, one designed to devour distance with travel. He crossed through the soft grasses that grew by the banks, soon reaching a broken stretch of concrete. The chunks were large, barely visible with the grass that grew through it. He gave no more thought to the broken road than the breeze passing by him, almost gone from the lands entirely.

Small saplings soon formed, and he was entering into the forest that coated a large portion of the land. Space was wide between them, the trees still young. The tall ones bent easily, not yet strong enough to stand tall, dappled light coming through. The scent of prey reached his nose, the angry chatter of a squirrel coming in as he raced underneath the tree. Slowing down he paused to mark a tree, strengthening his ties to the land. Smiling he turned to Kiara, tail curled high.

Spring
Just out of reach

Now that their previously sorrowful mood had abated, it was time to play again. Kiara knew that they couldn't go far with Lucia still sleeping inside the den. The tiny puppy would surely miss her mother and would probably be upset if she woke up to find that Kiara and Tharin were nowhere in sight. Even if mother and daughter had become somewhat used to the pack, Lucia was still surrounded by strangers.

Kiara, although tiny, was fast. Her body was built for speed and her quick gate was able to keep up with Tharin's long, loping strides. As she dashed through the forest her muscles moved visibly under her short summer coat, the scars stretching and contorting with her movements. She was fully healed and they didn't bother her physically, although they marred the arctic female's once perfect coat. A smile stretched across Kiara's face as she ran and she let her tongue hang out to flap in the wind. The soft grass soon turned into a broken stretch of old road and the wolf's claws scraped gently agains the hard surface. Kiara flew across the road, and soon they arrived at the entrance of the forest.

The sites and smells of New Dawn were still unfamiliar to the young mother, so their run proved to be an excellent tour of the area. Already she was learning where things were and memorized the location where the scent of prey was heavy. Tharin slowed down in the young forest, pausing long enough to mark the area. Amber eyes turned towards Kiara as she too slowed to a trot and moved beside him. The silver giant's tail curled upwards while Kiara kept her low and swinging. Her breath came as happy pants as her brilliant blue eyes soaked up their surroundings. New Dawn was beautiful, although in a different way than Ichika had been.

Without warning, the she-wolf coiled her muscle and took off towards the den. She didn't angle directly towards the den, choosing rather an angle that would take them slightly past the den and into the mountains. Kiara dipped and weaved through the young trees, her snowy coat a bright spot in the forest. As the terrain turned treacherous she slowed and began to playfully hop between the boulders that littered the forest floor.

Kiara trotted up beside him, the scars on her body visible beneath the short coat. They were horrible to look at, a reminder of times when she had been vulnerable to death. Even if Tharin hadn't known her before, the most recent addition on her shoulder aggravated him to no end, feeling like a failure every time he saw it, knowing he hadn't managed to protect her. He stretched forwards to nuzzle her, but Kiara was already bounding away. The large wolf watched for a moment before letting out a bark of laughter and stretching out to join her.

His paws covered the ground rapidly enough, the darker coloration letting him blend into the surroundings, following the white flickering in front of him with ease. There was no chance of losing her with that brilliant coat. They reached the den, ears pricked to see if they'd be turning in, but the female continued past, soon entering a more rocky terrain. Large paws gripped the rocks, letting him navigate among them, slowed down as he moved through, reaching Kiara's side to gently bump her, hoping she'd lose her balance.

Spring
Just out of reach

Before she had moved to Nova Scotia, Kiara's perfect, snow-white coat had but a single mar that had only been visible to those who stood directly in front of her. It had been a single tiny scratch and a reminder to be humble and go after prey that she knew she could take down. Kiara had received the scar as a yearling when she had made an incredibly idiotic decision while hunting. However, the wounds she had received from Amy now covered that once faint scar. The young mother's new scars littered her body and were disgusting to look at. They weren't a humble reminder, but a memory of two gruesome events that plagued Kiara's nightmares. Even so, the damage was superficial and did not impair the she wolf. She could still run, hunt, and play. Although Kiara knew she was nothing to look at, she was grateful that she hadn't become handicapped like Noah.

Tharin was quick to follow Kiara as she raced through the lands. Her body flew over the ground and her snowshoe paws tread lightly across the land. The wind howled in her ears as she dashed past the den. With each powerful stride, the lithe female was sent rocketing forward, but Tharin's much larger gait easily caught up to her. The arctic female turned her head slightly to gaze at silver wolf. He too was a symbol of power and his muscles rippled like water as they propelled his body forward. Kiara quickly turned her head back; she didn't know the land well enough to ignore her steps.

A soft, but firm weight bumped against her shoulder causing the female to stumble and slide on the rock. Giving up Kiara let her body fall lightly on the ground as she rolled to help break her fall. The young mother slowed and ended on her back, her legs hung loosely in the air. A playful growl sounded from her black lips as she pulled them back to reveal a toothy smile. "Cheater."

Kiara stumbled at the push, struggling for a moment to catch her balance. Tharin slowed down, tongue lolling out. His lips were pulled back, looking almost as if he was laughing as he watched her. It was rapid before she rolled, giving up and softening the blow of going across the rock. Tharin's tail wagged rapidly, dancing in place as he looked down to where she laid, looking at how ridiculous she appeared.

Tharin stepped over to where she was, laughing at the sight of her legs dangling in the air. Kiara wasn't angry fortunately, just growling playfully. Cheater? I did no such thing! I simply ran against you, that's all. Your tiny body just couldn't help it. Ducking down he nuzzled at her happily, tail swaying as he teased her about the tiny size. She was so different from the other females he knew, and not just because she wasn't a luperci.

Spring
Just out of reach

The idea of being angry at Tharin had never even crossed Kiara's mind. He was her friend and playful companion. On top of that, the silver male acted as a father figure and guardian to the fatherless Lucia. Kiara wasn't sure what she had done to deserve such a wonderful friend, but she cherished her bond with Tharin almost as much as she cherished her puppies. The giant male's playful antics were just part of the package. With all that, there was no way Kiara could ever be mad at Tharin.

A sly grin crossed the arctic female's face as Tharin spoke. He was going to pay for that, she would make sure of it. It wasn't that Kiara was overly conscious about her small stature. The fact that many of the luperci towered over her made the silver male seem almost small in comparison. Tharin leaned down to nuzzle her gently, his large tail swinging behind him. Taking advantage of the close proximity Kiara shifted her weight towards the silver male. Fast as she could, Kiara circled her front paws around Tharin's neck while simultaneously bringing her maw up so that she could chew gently on his muzzle. The white female's tail thumped loudly against the ground and she growled playfully at him.

Uh oh. The grin on Kiara's face promised mischief, too sly for anything else. The large wolf tried to duck out of reach before her plans came to fruit, but he was too slow. The white female was already there, paws locked around his neck. Jerking back he pulled Kiara up, ending with it looking almost like a dance. His tail swayed as he stepped around, growling through what he could, Kiara's mouth keeping his muzzle closed.

It might have been a soft chew, but Tharin still fought against it, tail swaying wildly. Tossing his head he stood up, forepaws pushing against her body. He wasn't going to be taken down like this! Not after he had just managed to knock Kiara down. It was too bad he had so rapidly forgotten that Kiara was tough as nails, part of the reason why he loved playing with her so much. She didn't get injured easily, no need to hold back.

Once he was in her grasp, there was no way she would let him go. Kiara's forepaws were wrapped around his neck, holding the larger male close to her and preventing his escape. The hunter's maw was wrapped around Tharin's muzzle, gently squeezing the soft tissue with her sharp fangs. To other creatures, the grapple might have looked cruel or like a desperate battle of survival. But the freely wagging tails of both canines betrayed their jovial moods and showed just how innocent the fight was.

Tharin reared up, his head pulling Kiara off the ground as if she weighed nothing. Her grip around the male's neck tightened, but she was careful to prevent any injury to Tharin. Growls from both wolves filled the area and sent any prey animal still left in the area, scampering away. Large paws pushed against her torso as Tharin's head was tossed back and forth. At last, Kiara could not hold onto the silver giant any longer. Her tight grip around his neck slackened and her jaws opened to bring out a happy whine. Even so, the white female wasn't ready to give up yet.

In a flash, Kiara had changed tactics. Her neck contorted as she bent her head to the side and aimed for Tharin's paws. They lay unprotected on her chest and an easy target in her mind. Like a serpent, Kiara shot her head forward and aimed to turn Tharin's muscled legs into her own personal chew toys.

Kiara hung in the air as he backed up, supporting the white wolf with his own form. The athletic creatures twisted in the play, muscles bunching as they struggled to see who could get the dominant hand in the game. Tharin growled loudly, doing his best to shake her off. The grip finally loosened, Tharin's head freed from Kiara's sharp grip. Howling happily he moved in to snap at Kiara. She hadn't backed off though, head dipping down to snap at his paws.

The larger wolf was forced to twist back. In a bound there was distance between them once more. Backing off from her felt a bit silly, but he wasn't going to just stand there and let her make mincemeat out of his paws. He needed them attached to them. Tail wagging he circled around Kiara before pouncing forwards again. He wasn't going to admit defeat to someone smaller and weaker than him! Even if it was clear that she was every bit his match in skill.

His large body moved agilely. He knew this land, and knew it well. Taking advantage of that fact he came in, large body pushing over her as his jaws snapped to grab at her scruff and push her to the ground in a pin. Growls continued to emit from him, hackles raised. If it weren't for the good natured way his tail wagged it would look like he was about to kill her.
