Keldava dipped her muzzle downwards in a brief, jerky motion, watching in amazement as a ripple spread across the surface of the eerily still water. Having never really seen a mirror or understood what ice was Keldava had nothing to compare the sight before her to, but she was enthralled all the same.

She was standing at the shore of a large pool of water, somewhat like the sea but much smaller; she could actually see the other side for one thing! The water had one other difference to the sea, it was completely still! Keldava had never seen a large amount of water before apart from the sea and that had been salty and constantly moving; she pure, still water contained in the odd pool was utterly fascinating.

Keldava had come across the wonder while steadily making her way north and back home. Having learned her lesson with abusing Secui form on her way south she had taken her return trip easier, travelling at a more sedate pace and in Lupus form. Exciting as Secui and Optime were Lupus was a form she had lived in all her life so far and she was much more proficient in its use, able to regulate her energy and travel longer distances.

Of course Keldava was still young and a long distance for her was fairly short for another, which is why running so much on the trip south had affected her so badly, but even so she managed to make a decent pace on the return trip.

At least she thought she was making a decent pace. Truthfully Keldava had absolutely no idea where she was, orienting herself against the sun, a skill she was really glad she had picked up, told her that she was heading in roughly the right direction but other than that she was pretty much lost.

Unusually for someone her age this didn’t really bother Keldava. As long as she was finding new things Keldava was happy and she never once lost faith in the fact that she would find her way home. Sure it might take her longer than she expected sometimes but getting lost and finding new things was half the fun of travelling!

Content with her reasoning Keldava dipped her nose back down and went back to enjoying the weird pool

(532) This sucks and is late, sorry.

Early summer warmth seeping into his golden coat, and Skoll Haskel could almost forget about the whims of the spinning world. He was no longer growing older, no longer changing and discovering these changes; he just was, and he accepted this with relief. Green eyes shut, and he stretched out in the patch of sunlight, absorbing it, made of it. Spring had only been the taste of such warmth, but this was what he had been made for. His brother had his long nights and cold shadows, but the sun prince had summer.

He might have slept forever on that hillside, in eternal bliss, if not for the hardwood trees nearby and the flying squirrels that leaped between them. A pair of them squabbled suddenly overhead, and one dropped down to land beside the young wolf, interrupting his nap. He yelped and lunged for the creature, managing to pin it underneath a still-large paw; the eyes of predator and prey locked, but the canine only released his paw and barked gruffly to send the squirrel flying up into the tree again.

Shaking his head, he remembered why he’d come here—and it wasn’t to snooze. Of all the changes occurring in his life (the return of his half-sister and her family, his promotion to sergeant, and the weird feelings originating for a particular girl), one was most obvious and very concerning. Newcomers had come to the Kingdom, the downy-furred woman Giselle and her mate, and they joined explaining that Crimson Dreams had disbanded. For some reason, the boy couldn’t believe it; if that was true, why hadn’t Alder’s family come to the Court? He didn’t know where else they would go. If Cour des Miracles suddenly split apart, he’d immediately find his own family—although he supposed bitterly that not all brothers wanted to stay with brothers.

Pushing the memory of Liam out of his mind, Skoll went over his objective. He’d wanted to come see the borders for himself, and he’d traveled through the hills until he finally approached where he thought the pack had been. His nose found only weak scents as he kept traveling, however, and his golden tail soon drooped as he moved through the old territory. He’d explored everything between the two packs, and this was all unfamiliar scenery; this must have been where Crimson Dreams made their territory.

It was empty now—or so he thought, before the scent of another luperci caught his attention. It was the wrong kind of scent, however: Cercatori d’Arte. His curiosity was piqued; had the other come to check out the old territory, too?

In his lupus form, the blonde wolfdog galloped underneath the hardwood trees. His pads fell onto spongy ground, odd for the warmth of the day, but he caught the scent of water plants and realized where he was headed. He ran faster, spotting the great still lake stretching out before him, and with a laugh forgot all about the luperci he’d intended to check out. With a running leap, he jumped into the shallows and began to splash around, rushing down the bank with pebbles under his paws and white sheets of water flying behind him.

Keldava was so entranced by the odd, shiny water that she somehow didn’t notice the noisy arrival of the other wolf until a violent shudder in the water broke up her reflection. With a violent start Keldava’s head snapped up, baring her teeth only to cover them a second later when she saw that the source of the disturbance was a wolf not much older than her, playing in the shallows and seemingly unaware of her presence.

Keldava remained quiet and tilted her head, regarding the boy with cautious eyes. On one hand part of her yearned to go over and introduce herself, excited at the prospect of actually meeting somebody who was her age but not related to her but on the other there was a small part of her that cautioned against just wandering straight up to a stranger. As per usual the small voice of logic was promptly ignored and Keldava set about thinking of how to introduce herself.

Keldava watched the boy splash around for a few moments before a mischievous smile spread over her lips. As quietly as she could she backed away from the water and started to run towards the boy, looping wide to stay where he couldn’t see her. At the last minute she broke into a full-pelt run towards the lake and launched herself across the water, letting out a happy bark to signal her presence once she judged it would be too late for the boy to move, landing near the boy with a whole-body splash that sent a sheet of water towards him.

(318) Ohnohegonnagether.

The water offered resistance, splashing against his legs as he barreled through the shallows, and dampened his cream fur to a dark yellow. He laughed and took higher steps, prancing around with his malamute tail curled over his back, embellishing his role as the haughty prince tenfold. The scenery was so beautiful that he had to feel giddy, no matter how little he’d like his siblings to see him act like a puppy. Even though he was still sad about Crimson Dreams, the lake provided a distraction from such bad feelings and reminded him that he could still live a little, no matter what was going on in the outside world. Life was never all bad.

So distracted by the lake and catching his rippling reflection, Skoll did not notice the girl. He was snapping at his own face in the water, snorting when it sprayed his nostrils, when a sudden splashing and a loud bark made him jerk his head up and spin in a circle. He was met with a giant sheet of water slamming into his face and soaking his already wet fur.

Sputtering, the boy scrambled backwards and gave his doggish coat a shake, his green eyes opening wide in surprise as he looked at the culprit. Smell told him that this was the luperci he’d been looking for: a young female d’Artisan, her fur dark as coal with amber points.

But her young face invoked no mercy from the prince. His ears snapped down, and his brow furrowed into a grimace that was a little too theatrically dark to be truly menacing. He emitted the deepest bark he could then rushed toward her, skidding at the last second like she had to send water right back at her—and then he followed this up with a leap, his teeth aiming to pull her scruff and dunk her in the shallows for good measure.
