(401) So rambly. x3

It was official. Skoll Haskel had a crush.

The young wolfdog scowled slightly as the thought crossed his mind again, and he sighed against the mare’s neck as he leaned against it. He couldn’t stop thinking about Adelle, even if their little fight hadn’t been anything extra special. He kept remembering her dark hair framing her face, and her icy blue eyes, and her laugh, and the strength matched to his. Reading Romeo and Juliet alongside discovering these feelings only helped to cement what his emotions were, even if it wasn’t quite as ridiculous as the titular characters (he still gagged at them). No, he didn’t quite know what love was yet, but he did understand his fixation and the little butterflies in his stomach and the other un-Skoll-like feelings that buzzed through him.

Besides realizing that, he also realized that he had to do something about it—and getting rid of the feelings was not an option. He liked spending time with Adelle, and even if she didn’t feel the same way about him, he really wanted to be her friend. They were sparring buddies, after all, and that kind of bond carried on through thick and thin. They were supposed to be able to face their enemies standing back-to-back like in the stories, calling to each other without turning their heads, dispatching their foes one by one.

Did you ever like someone when you were a filly? Skoll asked the mare nervously, and she snorted back at him. Deciding he would get no sort of advice from her, he followed his gut feeling like he meant to—which meant traveling back to their usual meeting spot. They’d tentatively set a date, and it was about that time again. He found his tail wagging slightly, tickling the bay’s rump. No matter what, this would be fun like always.

They reached the sparring ring, and the newly-promoted sergeant slipped down off his steed’s back. He hobbled her like before, and she grazed idly after he’d set her tack up against the tree. He stood with his hands clasped, beginning to wait, but something colorful caught the corner of his eye, and he sneakily ran in that direction. Snatching up the flowers, he did his best to disguise the fact that they’d been there, and then he ran back to the center of the ring, holding them and humming off-tune to himself.

Adelle still wasn't entirely sure what to make of her feelings for Skoll. Not a reader like he was, the pup had mostly thought about it, resulting to the time spent not figuring out what she felt for him, but day dreaming about their time together. They were going to meet up again today, Adelle eagerly brushing out the large black horse she'd been gifted with. Isa really was the best. She'd named him Oplader, the danish word for charger, hoping he'd live up to it.

Proudly she rode the draft horse out of the pack, not carrying any weapons this time. A bit thoughtless perhaps, but there were dozens of other things occupying her mind, such as the proud horse she wore, hoping Skoll would like it, and her appearance, carefully groomed to look it's best. There wasn't much she could do with her hair, short as it was, but she did brush it through ti ensure it didn't look an absolute disaster.

Reaching the sparring ring Adelle smiled, seeing Skoll standing so proudly at the center. Her own entrance was rather calm compared to his. Dismounting Oplader she patted the black horse fondly. Immediately the young stallion wandered over to Hwin, nickering softly. Shyly she made her way forwards, thankful she no longer tripped over her feet. Hi. She smiled, large tail beating behind her with the timid greeting.

(300) Sorry for wait!

The soft thumpedy-thump of hooves in the grass set Skoll's heart hammering at a tempo double that. He tried his best to stand still and not whirl around and bark like an excited puppy, but his wagging yellow tail betrayed his excitement as he looked back toward the girl. Rather than the old communal horse she'd ridden last time, Adelle was mounted on a great, sleek black beast; that and other little details made her look like a warrior queen, thundering majestically onto the battlefield, wind tousling her cropped dark hair and sunlight gleaming off her golden coat.

Hwin nickered back at the stallion, stepping over to him for a friendly sniff, and the boy looked back at his friend as she approached with strange shyness. Hi, he replied, not sure where the teasing lilt to his voice had come from. Even though he felt just as shy as the girl looked, he fought against it by adopting a more cocky and confident air; only his still-thrashing plume of a tail showed he was more jittery than he looked.

Um, I got you these, Skoll said suddenly, and pulled the flowers out from behind his back. They were kind of blue like her eyes, he saw now. Still offering the bouquet, his tail drooped slightly, and he brushed his hair out of his face with his free hand. Well, I mean, I don't know what you'd want to do with them, he stammered onward, wondering if Adelle would care for pretty girl things. She was different than his princess sister, and he liked that she was a warrior like he was, even better than he was in some regards. He cleared his throat and tried to adopt his self-assured smile again, failing miserably. It's the thought that counts, though, right?

Skoll's voice was rather confident, teasing her for the shy way she'd spoken. Her ears flicked back nervously, feeling silly for how she'd acted. She should have been more confident. Normally she was. Adelle wasn't too sure why it was so hard for her to act normal around him. She knew she had feelings about him, but she hadn't accepted it as Skoll had, puzzled by it more than anything else. She liked him, really liked him. She just wasn't sure what to do about it.

Flowers were revealed, to her surprise. They were a soft pale blue, still bright and lively from being freshly picked. Her large tail swung behind her, beating the air. Thanks. Adelle wasn't very girly, more of a tomboy than anything else, but they were pretty. Even better, they were from Skoll, making them somehow mean more than flowers from someone else. She took the flowers, looking them over. I can put them on Oplader. She wasn't too sure what he'd think of that, but it was better than wasting the gift.

Adelle walked over to where the stallion was, tossing his head and showing off for Hwin. She placed a hand on his neck, the black horse growing still. Swiftly she stuck the flowers in his mane. Unused to doing such things, some looked like they were about to fall out, resulting in him looking very silly. Oplader twisted his head, trying to reach the flowers to pull them off and eat them. They were out of reach for him though. Smiling she turned back to Skoll. I forgot the weapons. They'd have to do something else together.

The prince wanted to smack himself for sounding like he did; her dark ears all but vanished into her cropped mane at his tone. He held the tip of his tongue between his teeth and watched instead for her reaction to the flowers, catching some movement behind her as her fluffy tail wagged. He pushed his hair out of his eyes as she studied the shabby bouquet before making a suggestion.

Oh, is that your horse? Skoll asked, but it became obvious enough. He managed to giggle as she put the flowers in the dark stallion's mane, which looked ridiculous but in a fun way. Even Hwin seemed amused, her snorts taking on an almost mocking note as she watched the great horse twist around and try to eat his decorations. He looks beautiful, the boy remarked, a toothy grin brightening his face, and his green eyes landed on the girl again.

When Adelle admitted she'd forgotten weapons, the sergeant frowned and looked at the ground, clasping his hands behind his back. Well, we can...uhh... spar still, y'know? He looked up, pushed his hair out of his eyes, and held up clawed hands. Right, hand-to-hand combat and kicking and biting and all that good stuff. His tone grew more cheerful and assured when he talked about fighting, even though he wasn't very good at it still.

He continued blabbering. Or like, we don't have to fight at all, really. We could just talk. I don't know that much about you. His expression grew sheepish. Um, or -- or we can do both! For each good hit you get in, you get to ask a question about me, and the other way around! It'll be a game. His green eyes brightened.

Smiling brightly Adelle nodded. She pet the young black stallion, trying to push his head away from the flowers without much success. He was determined to get them out, and as young as he was he was going to succeed. Tossing his head the large draft horse looked over to Skoll, snorting. Isa gave him to me as a gift. She went to Freetown and brought back all kinds of things. We're going to do a trip around all the packs once her puppies are born. She said...I could invite a friend...

Adelle turned back to Oplader, again smacking him as he continued to determinedly move onto the flowers she had worked so hard to decorate him with. Spinning around at the game Adelle grinned. She was definitely going to be the winner here. Despite the similarities Adelle was quickly gaining on Skoll, and would soon surpass him in height. Alright. Not bothering to warn him Adelle dashed forwards, fist swinging to strike him.

Skoll grinned sheepishly under the stare of the black stallion, which no longer looked so majestic and powerful and dangerous with the flowers in his mane. His ears quickly swiveled toward the sound of Adelle’s voice as she explained that she had gotten him as a gift from someone named Isa.

“Who’s that?” he asked, even though he didn’t feel jealous; he had plenty of grownup friends in the Court, too, and he really wanted the girl to have friends for when he wasn’t around. He mused darkly about the distance separating Casa di Cavalieri from the Kingdom then decided it could always be worse. When she mentioned taking a friend on a little journey, he straightened and blinked. “Huh—oh.” Ginger ears did their best to disappear in his messy blonde mane. “Th-that sounds really fun. I mean, I traveled a little too, and fought a bear, but I didn’t visit the packs and stuff.” The words poured clumsily from his mouth, a direct attempt not to beg her to let him come.

A perhaps too-eager grin flashed across the other’s dark-masked face, but Skoll failed to recognize her movement for concentrating on that grin. He tried to jump back when she swung at him, but a black fist connected with his chest. He was just barely able to keep his balance, one hand jumping to the bruised spot as he panted, peering at her in surprise.

At last, a snort left him, and he crossed his arms. “Fine, I deserved that,” he said, trying to sound grouchy and failing. “Ask your question.” He wouldn’t be very gallant if he refused the lady her question, after all.

Isa's a friend. She joined the pack from before I could shift. She's really nice. She taught me some of the fighting moves I showed you. Her tail continued to sway brightly, happy to share about Isa. Isa was one of her closest friends, taking care of her and always up for whatever game Adelle had decided was going to be the most fun to play at that moment. Hearing that Skoll fought a bear Adelle's eyes widened. No fair! She hadn't ever fought anything, and Skoll had fought a bear! If only she could fight too.

Surprise colored Skoll's face as she hit him. He hadn't had enough time to prepare! Her tail swayed brightly, happy that she had managed to hit him. Told to ask a question Adelle considered. She had much she wanted to ask him. Choosing just one was hard. Deciding to start with the most important Adelle nodded her head. Will you come on the trip with me? She could ask him more questions when she managed to land a blow again.

Skoll wondered if the girl’s friend Isa was like his friend Terra, who taught him plenty of skills—not always fighting per se, but occasionally dirty tricks that could turn a fight to his advantage if the opponent wasn’t interested in honor. For instance, the bear they’d fought didn’t give two sniffs about a pair of rascally luperci, and it might have carved them in half with its big claws if they hadn’t been sneaky. It wasn’t really the big, exciting brawl that Adelle thought it was (from wideness of her pale blue eyes), but he didn’t bother to amend his statement. She might like him more if she thought he was stronger than he was, after all.

The girl thought for a while before asking him to come on the trip. The blonde boy answered with a giant grin, blurting, “Yes, I would love to!” He failed to think about what he’d tell his parents this time in regard to such a trip, but that didn’t matter. He’d be able to spend more time with Adelle!

His tail wagged crazily behind him, but all the time he remembered their game, and his green eyes sized her up—and he managed to keep from staring at her face and hair and the pretty patterns of her coat this time. He ran toward her, swiping at her with sheathed claws, but it was just a lazy blow; the real point was so he could dance in a circle around her and wait for an opening.

His eager response boosted Adelle's heart. Tail swaying she smiled broadly, happy that he had agreed. She'd been afraid that he would say no. Tell her that he wasn't interested, or too busy for such things. This was really good though. They could spend time together. Perhaps Skoll could tell Adelle about all the things he had learned traveling around. Surely he knew things that were useful. She would love to hear that.

A lazy strike with his hand came for her. Adelle lifted up her arm, blocking it with ease. If Skoll thought she would be easy to attack, he was dead wrong. She turned, keeping up with him. What now? Adelle lifted her leg, kicking out to hit Skoll. She wasn't yet talented enough to do a sequence of moves against an enemy, only doing one attack at a time. She could try a pattern on him, but it would be exactly that, not able to adapt to his movements.

As he’d anticipated, Adelle easily blocked his lethargic swat. He didn’t stop moving, however, his pale feet patting down the grass of the ring as he circled. His expression was more wolfish than it usually was, his dog blood melting away as the beginnings of a fighter came through. It was a rare sort of transformation for the normally haughty, childish prince, but it made him look serious and focused, his dark lips drawing back lightly to show the tip of a fang.

Her leg came out and knocked against his own, but as his balance was destroyed, the male fell toward her and clawed at her with both hands this time, determined to get his blow in.

Skoll's expression changed. Adelle could feel something underneath the surface, the back of her mind tingling with anticipation, much the way it did before a kill. Adelle couldn't place what was different, but something was. In response her body tensed up, changing from the more playful position she'd been in to a defensive one, revved up and ready to fight back against this new warrior she was seeing in her friend.

Her leg struck, removing his balance. That was one of the first lessons she'd learned, keeping her balance. A broad smile broke out as he tipped forwards, disappearing as she saw him swiping forwards. Unprepared for this Adelle stepped back, tripping up. They both ended up on the ground, Skoll's claws drawn across her chest. Surprised she sat up, staring down at his hand before looking over to Skoll. Guess you win a question.

Awkward Skoll is awkward. What's wrong witchu, boy?

350 words

Skoll did not have the training his friend did, even though she had shared plenty of what she knew with him. He didn’t have the advantage of growing up in a pack of warriors where training might even consist of watching other members out sparring. It surprised him that he was taking this path, simply going with the flow rather than making any rash attacks like he was used to, but it felt right. He’d waited for an opening, taken it, and then success!

And now they were on the ground. His claws raked through her fur, then stopped on the edge of her arm. His green eyes latched onto her icy ones, and he scooted back quickly, slightly embarrassed and definitely bashful, when she sat up. Had the pair been older, it might have been awkward for hormonal reasons, but Skoll was more freaking out about being in contact with this wonderful girl at all. It was kind of nice to be close.

“I do?” the prince asked, his mind still not quite registering what he’d done. Then: “Oh.” And: “That wasn’t my question!”

The boy sat on the ground with a huff, brushing his hair out of his face thoughtfully. It had to be a good question, because what if he couldn’t hit her again? But he was too shy to actually voice some of the things he was curious about. He didn’t want to ask a too personal question if it turned out to be a bad or private one, either. He scowled, nothing coming to mind, until he lowered his ears and spoke up in a very uncharacteristic meek voice.

“Do you think I’m weird?”

Skoll looked away with a scowl as he realized the question kind of sounded whiny and really stupid. If she didn’t think he was weird already, she definitely would now. But it was still a valid concern, especially because he didn’t know if she liked him—well, liked him liked him. And he’d been weird about the flowers, and his idea about this weird game, and just everything around her lately.

Skoll quickly moved away from Adelle, providing distance between the pair. That was more comfortable. Though Adelle had liked being so close to him. Even if it was just from an accidental fall. Adelle giggled as Skoll spoke, completely awkward in his words. It wasn't entirely clear to either of them who had come out on top in that tumble. Skoll had gotten the hit in though, so it was his turn. Adelle laughed louder as he was adamant that it wasn't his question. That would be fun to tease him about. You're taking two questions!

Her tail wagged brightly behind her, waiting for what Skoll would choose as his actual question. He certainly wasn't in any rush to do so, taking his time thinking about it. What could he possibly be coming up to ask her about? Adelle hoped it wasn't about her parents. She didn't know about them, just that they were gone. His question wasn't anything she had been expecting. Adelle blinked over at Skoll, trying to figure out how to answer. She didn't exactly know what other pups were supposed to be like, as she was the only one her age in Casa. Skoll was the only non adult she really knew. No. Are you weird?

Joking about his allotted questions aside, Skoll held his breath for her answer. Although there were plenty of puppies in his pack, all of them were related to each other, and there was no precedent for what he was feeling. He’d never felt comfortable bringing his feelings up to an adult in the Court. He might have asked his brother, who’d had a crush of his own on Robin, but Liam had left the Kingdom.

Resentment bubbled up in him again, but the boy managed to jerk himself back to the present when the dark-haired girl answered in the negative. He smirked, and looked back down at the ground as she turned the question back onto him. He plucked some of the grass at his feet and shrugged.

“I dunno. I feel like I’m being weird now.” He answered truthfully, green eyes downcast for a while. “I mean, I think you’re awesome, and so… I…” He tried to figure out how to voice the feelings he himself couldn’t understand. “I feel dizzy? Not like fall down dizzy, but dizzy, so that’s weird.”

He coughed and turned, burying his nose in the yellow fur of his shoulder and avoiding her gaze.

The game forgotten both adolescents just sat on the ground, soaking in the sun. Idly Adelle tugged on her curls. They weren't long like Skoll's, so couldn't be played with properly. Her hand slid down to the rose pendant around her neck, tugging around on that instead as Skoll picked at the grass. Both of them were really active canines. Sitting still was difficult. It was even harder when they were actually talking about "Emotions". It was an awkward subject, and Adelle wished Skoll would stop fidgeting so she could.

Adelle nodded, an odd fluttering in her stomach. She felt weird herself. Off. Adelle always felt funny when thinking about Skoll. A feeling she couldn't place. Adelle didn't giggle this time at Skoll's words, doing her best to figure out what she felt for herself. I feel kind of floaty near you...Is that the same? Not that it was much use to ask him, as clearly neither of them really had a clear idea on how they were feeling.

We can maybe wrap this up soon? Since you've been gone, I figure it'd be easier to just go with a new thread anyway ... so they can angst with each other. xD

Green eyes had fallen down to the grass he fidgeted with, but the gesture of her hand grabbed their attention. Her dark hair might not have been carefully styled, but he liked how it was cropped and curled around her face. It made her look girlish, even if she wasn’t classically feminine, while his only made him look like the wild child he was.

Out of the corner of his eye, he watched her play with her necklace before that got awkward. Besides, she was nodding, and the boy felt some tension leave his body; at least he wasn’t completely insane about this. When she admitted to feeling strange around him as well, though, his heart skipped a beat and he had to hide his surprise.

“Y-yeah,” Skoll agreed, “floaty.” And he went back to plucking blades of grass; he had a nice little pile going. There were a few dozen rapid heartbeats of silence before he realized that this wasn’t going to get them anywhere, and so the next best thing was to blurt his theory.

“I guess that means I like you. And I mean, a lot, like like like. And, well, that’s kinda okay with me if it’s okay with you. I just don’t… I just don’t know what I’m supposed to do about it.”

That was the crux of the problem. He liked her just like Liam liked Robin, like Romeo liked Juliet (except waaay less icky, and all that lovey stuff made him barf anyway), but there wasn’t any way to channel that besides what they were used to—sparring, playing, talking. He guessed he just wanted to know everything about her, which was the point of the game, which would maybe make him like her even more until he knew what to do about it.

She didn't look at Skoll, just listening to him talk about it. Adelle managed a small smile as he agreed, fidgeting even more as she waited. She looked over at the pile that Skoll had made with the blades. It looked like it was going to end up quite tall before they got anywhere. Idly Adelle added some grass to the pile, more for something to do than anything else. She wasn't really too sure what else she could attempt to do. It was just something that was there.

She looked up as Skoll spoke, a goofy grin on her face at his words. Like love? Grandpa had explained that to her, with much reluctance. It would be nice. Giggling Adelle nodded her head before breaking loose. Lightly she reached over and tapped Skoll on the shoulder, the tense situation dissolving as she let her childish nature take over once more. Tag! Darting up Adelle broke into a run, entering the woods. They might be turning into adults, but they weren't there yet, and for now she was a child once more, running wild through the woods.

Adelle didn’t seem to be too freaked out about the conversation, only fidgeting alongside him and adding to his little pile of grass. She didn’t seem to be freaked out about his awkward confession, either, instead giving him a big beautiful smile then making a quip that had him blushing profusely. He turned away dramatically, hiding his burning face as if his flushed skin could be seen under his pale fur, stammering, “Well maybe n-not that serious, I mean, n-not that I’d n-never—”

She cut him off with a tap to the shoulder, and Skoll stared at her, his green eyes huge as they met her lovely ice blue ones. Her simple declaration made him grin, though, and he nodded sharply, a mischievous grin overtaking his young features before she dashed off into the woods.

Laughing, the boy swept the grass pile away then chased after her, ignoring his horse’s admonishing whinny. He was just glad to be doing something, and spending time with the girl he liked, and tag was way more fun than any of that mushy stuff anyway!
