A Wolf in the Fold

Besides the beating sunlight and heat of the afternoon, the rogue and her equine were met with an unusual balmy air of Ethereal Eclipse upon first arrival. The canopy of the dense forest contributed to keeping this region shaded, tepid, and sheltered. Another woodland where Apache Outlaw nickered in modest protest of the compacted travel through, but at least the odd briskness of atmosphere here was mildly revitalizing. No matter what forest they two ventured through, they were all the same to Kaitriona. Finding herself ducking past low lying branches upon her roost, Outlaw guided them Northwest upon no particular path or interest. It was unknown to Kaitriona whether Outlaw was leading them to something of scent or by heart, but Kaitriona had trusted Apache Outlaw thus far with steering the two away from any distress. Her ventures depended on Outlaw's travel, and so far had proven to be slightly interesting.

Originally arriving from a previous forest that was more humid and tightly enclosed (Arachnea's Revenge), Kaitriona's ears perked and shifted at the distant tinging tune of a brook. Unlike the Revenge where there was a single depthless lake of crystal clear blue, the Eclipse held brooks and streams that ran through like veins. Coming upon a brook that twisted around a bend of rather large barked trees, American Cranberries were spotted in the overgrowth by the brook's edges. Perhaps this was what Outlaw scented and led them to, for the equine came to a stop in front of the overgrowth with the cranberries spotted within; nickering once again, but this time flapping his limp tail behind with a little enthusiasm. With the notion Outlaw found appeal in cranberries, it reminded Kaitriona of the endless pit of emptiness in her own stomach. And, perhaps, Outlaw had the right idea of stopping for a quick and light indulgence to fuel up.

Cranberries, rich in Vitamin C and flavonoids, provided no real benefit to Kaitriona. They were bitter to the taste, unfavorable for a carnivore that functioned on the flesh of another living being. Fruit garnishes only served so much to be treats, but rare treats to have. With the immense nostrils of Outlaw sniffing closer to the cranberries, Kaitriona diverted her sapphire gaze to the forest canopy above. The chitter of flying squirrels had been a background sound to the Eclipse that was drowned out by inner thoughts and otherwise ignored, but now she noticed two squirrels up in the tree congregating over found nuts or simply networking amongst their species for who knows what. Her Naginata blade would flay their pygmy bodies with ease, but her Naginata was not that long to reach, and certainly not a projectile weapon whatsoever. A difficult snack to come by here, and Kaitriona wasn't sure if it would be worth the effort to devise a plan to get one down. Her taste buds reminded her of the bitterness of cranberries, and it caused her to swallow and lick her lips eagerly. Her mind made avenues of how to go about this, but none of which seemed to be attractive enough to work. Kaitriona grew vaguely disheartened by the second.

(304) OOC: Eclipse is such a natural show off Wink

It took many days before Eclipse decided to leave the pack. It wasn’t the worlds fault she lost her children and she had to start hunting again. She was running out of food herself and she needed to be a part of the pack again. So she moved out into the Ethereal Eclipse. Grace with her because she would probably need the horses’ strength to help her haul a good sized animal if she was lucky enough to get one. She would go for anything she could get and recently it was rabbits and squirrels. Easy enough and at this time food was food.

When she got further into the wood she dismounted Grace. She was still skittish around Eclipse shooting on her back so she wasn’t going to risk breaking her neck in a real hunt. She left Grace where she was, though the horse knew the woman was hunting so she followed at a distance Eclipse wouldn’t have to worry about. She shot a rabbit and happily tied it upside down on the saddle, she would bleed it later, she wasn’t done yet and hoped for more kills. She was reminded she wasn’t the perfect shot either as she missed two. She finally got a second one with one of the squirrels up in the tree. She hit it dead center of the throat into its head so it died instantly and fell to the ground. Eclipse made a happy sound as she moved for the dead animal. These ones were smaller than normal squirrels but they made for a good treat. She was sure Robert would enjoy this as she came up to pick the animal up still holding her bow dropped at her side. It was a nice clean shot too, she thought as she picked it up.

One of the squirrels congregating in the trees suddenly hit the ground, dead. Kaitriona didn't get to witness the slow motion glory of an arrow piercing through a squirrel in detail, as the arrow cut through the air with a quickened whoosh sound, and that was all it took for the chattering squirrel to breathe no more. No evidence of blood or foul play, as its partnering squirrel leapt away to another tree's branch, frantic and just as surprised at how fast it took for its companion to be no more. As astonishingly fast as the kill was, flying arrows out of nowhere alarmed Kaitriona. Drawing her Naginata blade from behind, the sheen of the blade unholstering also sent Outlaw on an alert; tail whipping behind enthusiastically, eyelashes battering and ears swiveling. Her sapphire eyes narrowed all around her, holding her blade tense, until bounding from the foliage emerged an agouti colored female, claiming her perfectly shot prize.

Kaitriona pivoted her Naginata in the female's direction, backing up. This female was a little over Kaitriona in height, and had long shaggy brown hair cascading down past her shoulders. No clothes but her own natural fur, which was rich with Earthy colors and a white neck, bosom, and abdomen. Her eyes mirrored Kaitriona's in the fact they were a deeper shade of blue than her own. While the bow was clearly dropped at her side, this didn't give reason for Kaitriona to let her guard down in any manner. As the female observed her kill, Kaitriona could see from her distance the shot was so clean there was no spilled blood dripping anywhere, only a burst of red from the incision site of the arrow.

Her sapphire gazed danced between the squirrel on a stick and the female. Her dark raven fur bristled slightly, but didn't make any jarring movements to make the female uneasy. Controlled and collected was what won battles. Her mind began to slow down progressively, connecting that this female was probably just out on a scourge like Kaitriona was. "That was… ridiculously precise of you." Kaitriona started, mentioning her skill in an apprehensive tone. "Willing to take gold or knives in trade for a bite?" Kaitriona was willing to barter some gold pieces of jewelry, coins, or weaponry if the female was willing to give it up, or at least assist her in catching one. It was Kaitriona's way of fishing out whether this female could be a potential assistance in this situation, or something entirely different.

(304) OOC:

Eclipse’s mind was on the hunt, and the happiness of such a clean shot. The rabbit had been just as lucky too, She was getting better at her targets and Eclipse was proud. It showed in her eyes as she pulled the squirrel up and then took the arrow from the head. Unfortunately the arrow cracked and some of the wood splintered and she sighed in sadness, but what was one going to do when that happened. It was that instant that she found out she wan’t alone and a woman with a knife was staring at her, she pulled an arrow out but did not put it in its place, she watched the woman cautiously. She let tension ease and both arrow and bow face down; “Thanks, many months of practice helps.” She said a prideful smile on her face. The next comment took her aback, a squirrel for a knife? That would be like stealing, unless the woman could magically produce such metals from nowhere it would over price the squirrel in every way.

“As much as that is tempting, Knives would be a bit much for such scrappy meat, I’d give you three rabbit for a knife but the squirrel is on me. We have no use for god here really; Eclipse said. She was a part of the trading pack but they traded for goods and other things, this woman seemed quite hungry to offer a blade for a squirrel, and Eclipse was a compassionate character. She was sure that the other would find a better price in one way or another; “My name is Eclipse Soulstorm.” She stated her smile still covering her mouth and she put the arrow down and picked the squirrel up and tossed it toward the woman.
