"WHERE ARE YOU?" Hybrid shouted into the darkness. He could not see, for the trees obscured his view and blocked fragments of light from the moon and stars. But that was not light. It was false and fake, something stolen from the sun. This much Hybrid knew. It was something taken without asking. The light was a thief and Hybrid did not want it. He did not want to see anything this night, he did not want to feel anything this night, he did not want to experience anything this night. He wanted nothing more than a coyote without a home who had nothing more than his impulses and desires to guide him. Hybrid knew who this coyote was. He had smelled him around the lighthouse. Hybrid had returned to the lighthouse multiple times. Each time, he could smell them there. The pack of stars, the woman with a demon in her heart, the cloaked wanderer and the white wolf drenched in fear and his eventual friend. He had never seen the woman with a demon, but knew she had been there. Her scent was there. But he was too late. He barely noticed. He had seen the white wolf. A male who smelled of so much fear. Hybrid wished to devour the boy. His blue eyes would taste delicious. Perhaps he would devour the wolf who had investigated the lighthouse with him. He did not know who this girl was, but it did not matter. She had committed no crime aside from being a wolf.

"WHERE DID YOU GO? CAN YOU NOT SMELL THE DIMMING STARS? THEY WERE THERE! COULD YOU NOT SEE THEM?" The pack of stars. They were gone now. They had been here some time ago. Somewhere close by. But another pack was there now. The new pack smelled a little like the old one, but it was missing someone. Someone important. It was missing their monster. The evening stars had lost their stolen light.

He shouldn't be out here. It had been a foolish thing to leave the city this night. His wound was far from healed and his body far from recovered. Some strength had returned to him, but not enough. If he ran into that creature again it would be the end of him. Hell, if he was attacked by anyone it might be the end of him. The coyote was still too weak to defend himself effectively. So why had he felt such an urge to come here? To leave the safety the concrete provided him? It had been one of those feelings he got. One he knew that it was foolish to ignore. But still, which decision was more foolish he wondered. Only time would tell.

A scent caught him. It was not one familiar to him, but it did carry the trademark of Inferni. It would have been smarter to avoid the being completely, but his interest got the best of him. The man was quiet as he cautiously approached. Then the beast yelled. Not only yelled, but yelled utter nonsense. Onus flexed his hands, the left one angry with the effort. This male was mad and yet still he decided to speak to it. "Who are you talking to?" the man asked, standing near a large tree. If things seemed there were going to turn towards the hostile he could climb it, though he hoped it wouldn't come to that. It would set his wound on fire and undo some of the healing.

Ah, there he is, Hybrid thought to himself, right on time. He inclined his head to the vagabond coyote, feigning politeness. He approached the other creature, keeping a safe distance from the other male. He could see that the creature was injured, for his movements were slow and awkward in certain places, and Hybrid did not want to frighten him. Of course, Hybrid could barely see the coyote. Much of his observation was not done with sight, for he did not desire to see, but with smell and touch as well as hearing. He could hear the coyote's breath as he neared. He could hear the coyote's footsteps and the soft rustle of vegetation. There was something odd about the way the creature moved. Or perhaps he really could see this cloaked stranger. Hybrid frowned. No, he did not wish to, so he could not.

The creature spoke. His words were softer than Hybrid's shouts, tinged with an emotion Hybrid could not identify. A question. He wanted an answer. Hybrid smiled. "You," came the reply. "You're investigating the murder in the lighthouse," Hybrid stated, then continued, "did you find him yet?" He wondered. Had the monster been caught? Or was it all too late for the poor creatures of this world? Perhaps it would be better if the monster came and took everyone away, killed the wolves and buried chaos deep into everyone's hearts. Perhaps it would be better if the monster was allowed to live. No, it would not. Hybrid did not need someone else killing where he could kill. That would not do. Besides, he did not want the monster to devour the blue-eyed wolf. He did not know if the monster would, but the boy looked delicious. A scrumptious meal fit for any warrior.

Hybrid's freaking me out, being so cordial XD

Onus watched the other coy carefully. He walked toward him and he saw that his eyes were red. Blood red. Was this the male that had attacked Cwmfen? Somehow he knew that it was and he hated that he was unable to exact retribution upon this creature. Now he had a face though, and a smell. That was something. He stored the information to the steel trap that was his mind. The man would access it later at a more appropriate time. For now he swallowed his mission and his pride, hard though that was for him. He wasn't a particularly prideful man, but letting someone like this stand before him unharmed did hurt whatever he had. Or maybe it wasn't pride. Maybe something else. Either way, it was something that left a sour taste on his tongue.

At the madman's response his fur bristled slightly. The murders. How did this male know that he was investigating the murder? And why was he coming to him, asking questions? This all was very odd indeed. From what he guessed, this coyote was very much a murderer himself. Yet he had not killed those in that lighthouse. That much he could tell. Some criminals wanted to play that game. Ask others about the crimes they had committed. Onus did not sense that particular madness in this man. "Have a main suspect. Cannot find him though." Oh, and how that galled him. "Know a wolf named Conri Church?" If the clanmember was willing to offer something Onus was not above taking it.

Hybrid's grin widened. He was a cheshire cat, all grins and smiles, fangs and gums. His scarred flews revealed rows of off-white teeth, slightly yellowing and glittering faintly. Sharp. No, he was no cat. He was a grinning madman with eyes of the animals he had broken and a body of flesh and stilts. He was held up by nothing and created nothing. He existed to breed pain, but somehow, his purpose had become much greater. This male proved it to him. This coyote with his eyes hidden from the world by some means or another, this coyote with his presence masked by clothing and vigour. He had heard rumours of a masked avenger wandering about the lands, but had not realized they were true. He'd heard whispers of murder and smelled the death in the air. But now? He could taste it. Thick. On his lips, dripping down. It made a muffled sound as it overflowed and made contact with the ground. Hybrid longed to taste it again (or for the first time) -- whatever he was tasting here. He had lost track.

He was thinking in circles and going nowhere. That was fine. He didn't need to think straight (a pun! How comical!), for it served no purpose. Perhaps, if he went around in circles, he would come back to the beginning and discover the answer that had been waiting for him for all these days and weeks and months. "Know him? I wish. I wish you used pronouns, too. But no. I haven't seen him, not since Twilight Vale broke up. Actually, never. I just know he was a part of that pack. We never interacted with them, much, lucky them, lucky them. But no. Where do you think he went?" Hybrid's grin widened. "You think he did something, then? A main suspect, hmm. But he had the stars in his eyes, you know. I never saw him. But I remember that much."

"I wish you used pronouns, too." lmao xD

This creature really was mad. About as mad as they got by Onus' reckoning. At least when it was a somewhat controlled madness. There were some creatures out there that were so fucking nuts that they couldn't control themselves. It seemed like this man had at least some element of control in him. After all, he wasn't trying to attack Onus. At least not now. Not this time. If he knew he was investigating the murder then he had to have at least some inkling of what he was. Maybe he took some morbid amusement from having a man dedicated to justice around and wanted to clear the playing field of other competitors. Such actions would make sense to a mind like this.

Twilight Vale was not a place he had heard of. But since that pack apparently was gone it was not surprising. He was still new to these lands and didn't know much of the history. Even if the coyote had never met the wolf he searched for, at least he seemed to know something about the Church man. "He could be somewhere around the city. Efforts to find him there have not been fruitful however." His shoulder twinged with pain and he dismissed the urge to rub it. "Yes. Clues point to him. What few there are." The fact that he was already capable of rape, his name was fairly infamous, the fact that the left arms of the victims had been chopped off and Conri himself was missing that arm. Invisibly his eyes narrowed at the strange coyote. "Stars in his eyes? What do you mean?"

Somewhere around the city, somewhere around the city, somewhere, somewhere, someplace... and... too many comma's. Hybrid frowned. No, he needed to stop that. He could see his thoughts before him now, each one spelled out. But there were too many commas. At least he knew how to use pronouns. He smiled and shook his head, eyeing the other coyote as he spoke. Conri Church was around here. Somewhere. But there were not many clues. Hybrid's smile returned. How unfortunate.

He was certain it was profound because he didn't understand it. But how could he be the one uttering such nonsense and claiming it was worth hearing? How could he be the one speaking around a tree, up the road and back again (essentially: in circles) and confusing the other party? No. It was profound. He did not understand it. How could he? Stars in the eyes, stars in the eyes! Hybrid did not know what colour this creature's eyes were. How could he? He had never seen him in his life (wait, or had he? He couldn't remember now, this coyote was confusing him). No. That was wrong. He had seen him. He did not know him, but he had seen him.

"I don't know. Of all the things I said, you noticed that? I wonder... If I'd never seen him, how could I remember that? Or did I see him? I saw him, you know. He's still around here. I don't know where. Maybe you'll find him," Hybrid replied with a smirk. Of course, it had to be simple. Whatever it was. He just wished the coyote would use pronouns. He was about to mention it again, but decided not to. It wasn't that important, after all. Just a silly thing.

This coyote was so bizarre. Suddenly it dawned on the man what he reminded him of. It was such a distant memory and yet here and now it swam up to the surface of his consciousness. There had been a story, a book, which the man that had saved his infant life had read to him while he had been recovering from his mother's attack. The name of the story escaped him, but there had been a character much like this creature. A cat with a wide grin who was also mad. It was like this red-eyed canine had completely taken on that character and was now standing before him. But Onus was no little girl and this was no dream.

"Yes. Noticed that because not a normal statement." In fact, it really made no sense at all. Apparently it meant something, at least to this male, but whatever it was the vigilante could not grasp it. He was talking in circles and Onus wasn't sure if he was going to get anything more from this conversation. Still, his face stayed in its usual neutral position. "So you have seen him? What do you mean by here? In this forest?" Was the clanmember trying to toy with him. He did not like being toyed with. Unfortunately now he could not solve that problem with his usual methods. He hated being so useless.

Hybrid had not spoken to anyone in a number of days. He was beginning to suspect he had forgotten how. Not necessarily the action of speaking, but rather, the way to speak. How might he suggest a new topic? How might he steer this coyote away from the stars in his eyes comment, which really was not too hard to figure out, anyways. Of course, Hybrid did not understand the meaning anyways, but he knew it was simple enough. Hybrid hated riddles. In fact, he normally did not speak this much. Most of what he did was a grunt here or there, a snarl every so often, and maybe a frown. Oh, yes, there was a lot of frowning. Sometimes he even said things like "filty wolf", or "stupid female", but not that often. Not often enough for it to count.

Perhaps he was broken. "Not using adverbs isn't normal," he countered. Not normal? That sounded strange. He frowned, then shrugged. It wasn't like he was an authority on grammar. In fact, he was fairly certain he cursed almost as much as he spoke (he had censored the previous thoughts about calling others a "damn filthy wolf" and a "stupid fucking female"). Hybrid grinned. "I guess I saw him. I don't know. How should I know? Maybe I did. But he's not in this forest. He's around here. Vague kind of 'here'." He frowned, then grinned again. He had little else to tell this coyote. He only needed to let this coyote know all his work had amounted to something. But Hybrid being who he was did not want to admit this freely.

This conversation really was going nowhere now. Another comment about the way he spoke. That was getting annoying. Onus couldn't remember the last time anyone had made a comment on his verbal patterns. Or perhaps he could. If he remembered correctly it had been some young punk that had stole something and was trying to be a wise ass. He had ended up with a few broken fingers, curled up and crying on the ground like the little boy that he was. He wondered where that boy was now. If that had taught him his lesson or if he had gone back to his life of crime. Perhaps he should have killed him to prevent thoughts like this.

Onus was more or less convinced that things had reached a dead end. The coyote was making less and less sense the more they talked. Maybe it was because he had nothing more to say. At least nothing else that was helpful to say. "Hrm. I see." Did he? Hell, he didn't know. Conri Church wasn't in this forest but was still in the area. That much he could gather from this somewhat senseless babble. "Anything else?" If not it was time for him to leave. Time to go back to the city and heal and think about what he needed to do when he was able to do his work again.

The coyote replied. Boring. A quick Hrm. I see, nothing to say, nothing to do, move on people, move on. Hybrid stared at the coyote blankly, trying to formulate a reply, and again, wondering if there was something broken in him. He couldn't think of anything to say. He'd said everything he remembered (and even a bit more, just for fun), but that was about it. Hybrid would have shrugged, but he did not want the other coyote thinking he was strange. That was no fun at all. (Or was it?)

Another reply: Anything else? Nope. Hybrid shrugged, trying to ignore his indignation. This coyote was rather rude. Hybrid felt as though he was being alienated by the other male's lack of adverbs -- and that he refused to acknowledge this loss. Or even say if they were really called adverbs (they could have been adjectives for all Hybrid knew).

Hybrid's blank stare continued. He waited a few seconds, trying to think of how to reply.

"Nuh," he grunted at last. "Well, maybe. You watch out for them freaks in Inferni. There's a real nasty fellow. Something like Hybrid Holocaust. He's a bit of a crank. Try not to talk to him. You look like you could beat'm, but I wouldn't go there. He's pretty outta it. Jus' keep yourself safe. We don't want you dead or nothing. You've gotta solve that murder," he acknowledged with a tip of his head.

The blank stare and shrug indicated to Onus that this rather odd conversation was indeed done with. It was for the best. His patience was wearing thin and he really should return to the city and rest. He was still quite weak from his injury. His shoulder throbbed and stung. It probably would have been smart to wear a sling to keep the movement of his left arm to a minimum, but that would have screamed weakness even more loudly. That was the last thing he wanted and it was a surefire way to get killed. So he would go back to Halifax and slink in the shadows there until he was healed, as much as it galled him.

Before he could leave though the clanman said a few more things. There was a flicker in his hidden dark eyes. Was this creature mocking him? Or was it more of his delirious crazy talk? It was more than obvious that he belonged to the very clan he was warning against and from the moment the encounter had started Onus had been almost certain that this was Hybrid. It took all of the man's self control to hold back from attacking. Having to let this male walk free was hard enough, but this was just extra salt in his wound. "Yes. Of course." He silently gritted his teeth while he turned to leave the madman.

Hybrid gave the coyote a quick, curt nod in reply. He had nothing else to say, and so he waited for a few seconds after the creature spoke, wondering if he would say anything else. He did not. Hybrid gave the coyote one last look -- to make sure he remembered him -- and committed the creature's scent to memory. He would remember if this fellow came around looking for him (or the starred canine) again.

With nothing to say in reply, Hybrid shrugged, and then paused for a moment. "Good, good," he mumbled. He turned, then set off in the direction of Halifax. He had come out all this way; he might as well go find something to do. He yawned, then set off at a slow, loping pace in the direction of the abandoned city. Maybe he would find himself a monster. He grinned.
